When Ivy Queen took the stage at Carnegie Hall in November, she knew she was about to make history as the first reggaeton artist to ever play the storied venue — but the gravity of the moment didn’t fully hit her until a few songs in. She’d been in the middle of performing some of her biggest hits — classics like “Quiero Bailar” and “Te He Querido, Te He Llorado” — when she looked out in the audience and saw a sea of women screaming along to every word. “I was...

A music genre born in the barrios of Puerto Rico permeated into the mainstream and up the charts. Its story is told through Reggaeton: The Sound that Conquered the World, a new docuseries from Peacock. Executive producer and director Omar Acosta teamed up with Daddy Yankee to spotlight the cultural touchstones, evolution, and impact of Reggaeton. Daddy Yankee’s song Gasolina became a global phenomenon 20 years ago, solidifying him as the “King of Reggaeton.” Others who helped put the Latin, hip-hop, and Caribbean-infused sound on the map are also interviewed for the docuseries. Names like Bad Bunny, Feid, Ivy Queen, J. Balvin, Karol G, Myke Towers, Nicky Jam, Rauw Alejandro, Shaggy, Vico C. and more. Here Acosta provides insight on the making of the project and why it hits close to home. Bad Bunny performs onstage during the 2023 Grammy Awards (Kevin Winter/Staff) Reggaeton is often lumped together with other genres of music.

Over the last several weeks, fans of Latin music have been, in some cases, puzzled to see some of the biggest names in reggaeton publicly voice their support for former President Donald Trump’s run for president.
In early September, Anuel AA and Justin Quiles met the former president during a Pennsylvania rally. Just a few weeks later, Nicky Jam joined Trump, receiving stark backlash, including from Mexican rock band Maná who pulled their collaboration from streaming services.

Nicky Jam has now joined a cohort of reggaetoneros pledging their support for Donald Trump — even if the former president doesn’t seem to know who he is. On Friday night, the Puerto Rican musician joined Trump onstage in Las Vegas to endorse him, but the former president misgendered him in his introduction.
“Do you know Nicky? She’s hot. Where’s Nicky?” Trump said from the stage while looking offstage to find him. Jam then arrived at the podium as Trump corrected his mistake: “Oh, look, I’m glad he came up.

Adrian Arredondo & Myrna Perez Prepping Doc ‘Take It Away’ On Tejano Singer & TV Host Johnny Canales
Exclusive: Johnny Canales, the famed Tejano singer and Mexican American TV host who passed away on June 13, is the subject of Take It Away, a new feature doc from Adrian Arredondo and Myrna Perez that has entered production.
In a moment when Latino music and artists like Peso Pluma, Grupo Frontera, and Bad Bunny are dominating the charts, the film explores the origins of Latin music’s rise through The Johnny Canales Show — a space where, beginning in the 1980s, every Latino in America felt seen, free to be unapologetically themselves, and part of a larger movement.
Ushering in the golden age of Tejano music and the “Decade of the Hispanic,” Canales and his TV show became a microcosm of the Latino experience in America.
The film will be exec produced by Texas Monthly and Trojan Horse Media, as well as Arredondo and Perez. CAA Media Finance reps worldwide distribution rights.

It's a drizzly Thursday afternoon in New York City, and Nicki Nicole has spent most of her day answering back-to-back interview questions from journalists. For someone who just concluded a tour between Latin America and Europe, not to mention nine sold-out shows at the Movistar Arena in Buenos Aires, where more than 100,000 fans were in attendance, you'd think she was ready to slow down. But hours before our conversation, she announced that her first US headlining tour would kick off next month in Mexico City. You can see the tunnel vision in her green eyes. Her fans, who have been by her side since day one, are what motivate her to keep going.

As reggaetón continues to dominate the music charts, the genre's legends, including Daddy Yankee, Tego Calderón, Ivy Queen, and Don Omar remain more relevant than ever for their roles in shaping a movement that originated in Puerto Rico and eventually went global. But Don Omar's comeback has been a long-awaited one. The leyenda known for his early 2000s hits like "Dale Don," "Sácala," and "Salió el Sol," has officially returned to the scene with his "Back to Reggateon" US Tour, produced by Cmn. The tour not only marks his highly anticipated return to the stage but also beautifully celebrates his two-decade-long career and its impactful contributions to the genre.

When indie rock musician Neysa Blay sat down to start writing songs for her new album, "Nada es Suficiente," she found herself in an unusual predicament. She'd been sober for nearly a decade at that point, putting considerable distance between her turbulent past and the more placid present. "I'm really good at writing when there's chaos and noise in my head, and when things are kind of bumpy," she says. But now she'd overcome so many of her inner demons. "How do I learn how to write from a good place?"
The LP, which drops in May, bridges the gap between her innate rebellious spirit and the more conscientious Blay that has emerged over the past few years. Previous singles, such as the softer "Te Gusta/Me Gusta" and no-nonsense "Quise Que Fueras Tú," toggle between vulnerable and headstrong; she might be rough, but her heart is undoubtedly open. Eighteen years ago, before his debut on the 2005 compilation album "Sangre Nueva," not many were familiar with Puerto Rican reggaetón artist Arcángel. In the early days of his music career, Arcángel would sing on mixtapes for his friends and for locals in the rough San Juan neighborhoods of Villa Palmeras and La Perla, where he grew up. But these days, he has millions of listeners tuning in to his music, making him one of the biggest stars of the genre.
As Arcángel sits down for our virtual interview, his usual sunglasses are off. He looks straight at the webcam - not the screen - as if having a face-to-face conversation.
There's a startling amount of empathy in his eyes, which is both surprising and not when you consider his tumultuous early years, marked by hustling on the streets and finding ways to get by. People tend to associate that kind of life with cynical personalities,...

The legendary Ivy Queen - often referred to as the Queen of Reggaetón or La Caballota - once said in an interview, "In the life of every woman, there's a point when you blossom and when you flourish." And for Ivy Queen, after decades of cementing her place as a pioneer of the genre, that time is now.
Born Martha Ivelisse Pesante Rodríguez, Ivy Queen first became recognized in the reggaetón scene back in the '90s, when the genre was still considered underground. She was the first female member of the all-male rap collective formed at the studios of The Noise, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. And her first live performance - where she rapped "Somos Raperos Pero no Delincuentes" ("We Are Rappers Not Delinquents"), wearing what would then become her signature style of oversized jeans, a T-shirt, braids, and long acrylic nails - launched her on a legendary career.

La diva, la perra, la potra! Ivy Queen tapped Puerto Rican stars Brray, Marconi Impara, Lennox, and Eix for a remix of her previously released song “Toma.”
The Young Hollywood-produced song dropped Friday and mixes Queen’s classic reggaetón sound with Middle Eastern sounds as the musicians reference reggaetoneros — like Tego Calderón, Bad Bunny, Rauw Alejandro, and RaiNao — and Plan B’s “Frikitona” in the lyrics.
“I can’t wait to share this powerful remix with my fans all over the world,” she said in press release. “Alongside these talented artists,...

A legend continues to make history. Celia Cruz — the late Afro-Latina salsa legend — is set to become one of five American Women Quarters Program honorees to be featured on the U.S. quarter next year.
Days ago, the United States Mint revealed the design of the new quarter, which captures the singer’s “dazzling smile while performing in a rumba style dress.” It also features her signature catchphrase, “Azucar!”
“Celia Cruz was a Cuban-American singer, cultural icon, and one of the most popular #Latin artists of the 20th century,” the Mint tweeted Friday.

Rauw Alejandro's newly released "Playa Saturno," is the kind of album that's meant to be played on a hot summer day with the volume up, bass booming, and the sun shining. That's the perfect listening environment to enjoy it in, evoking images of palm tree lined-boulevards and gated marquesinas that were so crucial to reggaetón's evolution. Yet, these days, as the genre becomes more and more commercial, there is an ongoing polemic about where the line can be drawn between authentic reggaetón and pop music. But with "Playa Saturno," Alejandro aims to seamlessly toe that line, combining heavy-hitting beats that mine the more than two-decades-worth of the genre's history with his trademark crooner style and easy falsetto. And in the process, he proves that, despite his mainstream success, he is a reggaetonero through and through; one that truly understands the complexities of his genre and how to make people move.

Back in January, Rauw Alejandro took listeners to outer space with his futuristic album Saturno. Now, he’s extending the journey: On Friday, the Puerto Rican star released a surprise “spinoff” record called Playa Saturno, where he brings the beach to the otherworldly planet where he left things off on his previous LP.
Playa Saturno features a spate of unexpected collaborations: Rauw teams up with Mexican corridos tumbados singer Junior H on “Picardía,” reggaetón icon Ivy Queen on “Celebrando,” and Spanish pop legend Miguel Bosé on “Si Te Pegas.” Puerto...

Young Miko is relaxing on a Saturday afternoon when I reach her on Zoom. Given that she’s about to kick off her first-ever world tour in Guatemala later that night, it’s hardly a regular Saturday, though. “I’m resting as much as I can,” says the Puerto Rican artist, 24. “I’ve been so busy that it wasn’t until two days ago that I realized I’m starting the tour.”
Since releasing her EP Trap Kitty in 2022, Miko has upended the sound of Latin trap with bouncy tracks and incomparable Spanglish lyricism.

Several changemakers received awards, including Mexican pop icon Thalía; Grammy-nominated Mexican singer/songwriter Ana Gabriel; Venezuelan actress and singer Evaluna; Afro-Colombian singer and rapper Goyo; and Argentinian urban pop superstar Emilia Mernes. Despite the significant challenges they've faced in a male-dominated industry, Latina music artists are thriving. Karol G recently made history with her fourth album, "Mañana Será Bonito," which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts No.1. And Shakira has had an epic year of back-to-back recording-breaking hits, including her viral diss track "Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions #53."
In celebration of Latinas' success in music, Billboard and Telemundo have partnered for Billboard's first-ever Mujeres en La Música event, which honors Latin women in Spanish music. The inaugural event will take place on May 6 at the Watsco Center in Miami but airs on May 7 on Telemundo.
Reggaeton legend Ivy Queen, who received this year's Icon Award at Billboard's 2023 Women in Music event, will be cohosting the event alongside television personality Jacqueline Bracamontes.
Leila Cobo, Billboard's chief content officer for Latin/Español, says the inaugural event serves as an expansion of Billboard's Women in Music franchise.

There's a scene in the music video for iLe and Ivy Queen's single "Algo Bonito," released on Mar. 2, where iLe stares down three anonymous men in a western standoff fashion. Dressed in all black, her hands holstered on her hips, she dispatches all three con solo una mirada. It's become clear that, while iLe's music has always been a medium for her progressive and feminist values, the track off her latest album "Nacarile" isn't pulling any punches. As she tells Popsugar, "Las mujeres están hartas." Translation: women are fed up.
According to the singer, it was this patriarchal frustration that became the seed from which "Algo Bonito" would sprout. "I was just feeling frustrated with the day-to-day of being a woman," iLe says. "You know there were so many things happening that just had me feeling this sense of rage. The concept for the song really came out of wanting to vocalize that.

Publicist Cristina Novo-Bernal has been around music all her life. The daughter of a Peruvian mother and Argentinian father, she was born in Lima, Peru, but grew up in Miami. Her father was a concert promoter and also owned a nightclub; the family still has footage of little Cristina on stage with performers, singing alongside them. "Music is kind of all I've known and all I know," she tells Popsugar.
Now one of the preeminent publicists in Latin music, Novo-Bernal represents clients like Nicky Jam, Anuel AA, and Lenny Tavárez. Still, the 42-year-old couldn't have predicted that her career - as well as greater recognition of Latin music on the international stage - would take the twists and turns it has. With an attitude of "create your own lane," Novo-Bernal has solidified her place in a historically cutthroat industry. And despite her long and successful career, she promises she's just getting started.

The year 2021 was a complicated one for reggaetonera Karol G. The Colombian music artist was heartbroken - she and Puerto Rican reggaetonero Anuel AA had broken up after making their relationship public with their 2019 duet "Secreto." It was also the year she released "KG0516," an album that included megahits "Tusa" in collaboration with Nicki Minaj, and "Bichota," a feminist theme song whose title refers to a word Karol G coined to mean "a strong woman leader."
But despite the success of the two singles and the LP, Karol G, born Carolina Giraldo Navarro, was going through it. She found herself feeling sad and angry at certain points and joyful at others. And while she was grateful for it all, the singer also feared she wasn't going to be able to put out music that would top the success of "Tusa." It was a year full of...

From the time she began making heartbreak anthems and sexy ballads that dominated the mid-2000s, La Sista — a proud bombera and one of the first Black female reggaeton pioneers — was ahead of her time. The artist always showed off her lyrical dexterity, even when she was rapping about the ups and downs of relationships — a theme that’s been a rite of passage in the genre. She made powerful emotion the center of her sound, and also set a blueprint for a generation of female acts who came after her.
