My Chemical Romance dug deep into their vault of unreleased music to find something special for their recent performance at Dodger Stadium. During the second half of their Los Angeles concert on July 26, the band premiered “War Beneath the Rain,” a song they had crafted prior to their breakup in the early 2010s.
“We were making a record that never came out, and this was one of the songs we really loved from it,” Gerard Way told the audience. “It was just us in the studio with our friend [studio engineer] Doug McKean...

Nineteen years after My Chemical Romance’s most acclaimed album, The Black Parade, was released, the New Jersey emo-rock band brought a cinematic and theatrical performance of the album to Los Angeles.
Playing two sold-out shows at Dodger Stadium, Saturday night’s kickoff show was the band’s (known by fans as MCR or My Chem) first L.A. show since 2019. Long Live The Black Parade, MCR’s first stadium tour, was a theatrical affair.
The band — currently consisting of members Gerard Way, Mikey Way, Ray Toro and Frank Iero — played their 2006 hit emo-rock concept album, The Black Parade, in full, set against a backdrop best exampled in the tour’s teaser. The video’s description reads, “It has been seventeen years since The Black Parade was sent to the Moat. In that time, a great Dictator has risen to power, bringing about ‘The Concrete Age’; a glorious time of...

My Chemical Romance debuted an unreleased track song titled, “War Beneath the Rain,” during their “Long Live The Black Parade” tour stop at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on Saturday, July 26th.
After the band completed their playthrough of The Black Parade and resurfaced on the B-stage for the second half of the show, frontman Gerard Way paused to dedicate “War Beneath the Rain” to the late producer Doug McKean, whose family were in attendance. McKean had produced My Chemical Romance’s scrapped fifth album The Paper Kingdom, which was recorded in 2012 but was never released due to the band’s breakup the following year.

What elevates the "Spider-Verse" films above from other multiverse superhero movies is how they use the multiverse premise in formal ways; different universes have different animation styles and color palettes. One of the more offbeat Spider-People in "Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse" was Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn), who hails from an anime universe. Rather than having spider powers of her own, Peni is a mecha pilot. Or rather, she has a psychic link with the spider that pilots the mecha (Sp//dr) built by her late father.
For an anime novice (as I was when I first saw "Into The Spider-Verse"), Peni probably seems like a more generic anime homage. The psychic spider is just some typical anime weirdness, you think. But if you're more versed in Japanese animation, you'll realize Peni's backstory is specifically based on the famously surreal mecha series "Neon Genesis Evangelion.

My Chemical Romance busted out a cover of the Smashing Pumpkins’ 1995 hit “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” during their “Long Live The Black Parade” tour stop in San Francisco on Saturday, July 19th.
The moment took place after My Chemical Romance completed their playthrough of Welcome to the Black Parade, which they are performing in full for each night of their 2025 tour. During the extended encore section where the group dusts off songs from their three other studio albums, Gerard Way and co. launched into a riveting rendition of the Smashing Pumpkins tune whilst in the round on their B-stage. It marked MCR’s first time playing the song live. Watch a fan-captured clip of the performance below.

My Chemical Romance paid tribute to Smashing Pumpkins during their show at San Francisco’s Oracle Park over the weekend. The emo punk band performed a rousing cover of the Pumpkins’ 1995 hit “Bullet With Butterfly Wings” as a surprise addition on their Long Live the Black Parade tour, which kicked off earlier this month.
The band offered a relatively traditional cover of the song, off Smashing Pumpkins’ seminal album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, with frontman Gerard Way putting his own spin on Billy Corgan’s vocals.

I don’t have strong opinions on Ellen DeGeneres — she was a fine comic, a subpar daytime host, probably a bully and one of the only Hollywood people to actually lose a job because of cancel culture. Really, she was great as Dory in Finding Nemo.
But as inconsequential as Ellen’s current whereabouts are to my life, the theory of how she got here is incredibly important. You see, it all starts with 9/11. Yes, that 9/11. The one in 2001, the one which permanently changed the trajectory of American public life, the definition of freedom, warmongering, human rights, airport security, and according to one beloved theory, Ellen DeGeneres’ career.
The Domino Effect theory on this issue — Ellen’s career, not 9/11, we don’t have time for that, we don’t have the maps for that — spans multiple decades, families and major motion picture blockbuster franchises. Circulating in the annals of the internet for years,...

Since emerging in the late 2010s, the British yelper Yungblud — a.k.a. Doncaster, England-born Dominic Harrison — has become an anti-pop hero. His songs channeled the angst and agitation of youth into frenetic mini-anthems that musically reflected the on-shuffle mentality of the 21st century. Yungblud’s voice — a piercing yelp that exists somewhere between Gerard Way’s wail and Brian Molko’s sneer — slotted him in the alt-rock world, but his aspirations seemed to stretch far beyond that categorization.
With his fourth album Idols Yungblud harnesses those hopes and takes a very big swing.

Gerard Way, the lead singer of My Chemical Romance and the creator and writer of The Umbrella Academy, which was adapted into a hit Netflix series, returns with a brand new story that promises to explore one of the biggest and most shocking secrets kept throughout the series: Sir Reginald Hargreeves actually adopted 14 babies, not 7.

In a major throwback to 2006, Jack Black returned to host Saturday Night Live this weekend, and he brought a My Chemical Romance tribute with him.
The 3x Golden Globe nominee channeled Gerard Way in the sketch ‘Goth Kid on Vacation’, which parodied the ’06 single ‘Welcome to the Black Parade’ with a Jamaican reggae medley featuring Kenan Thompson and Ego Nwodim.
“When I was a young boy, my parents took me down to Jamaica for my high school spring break / they said ‘come to the pool,’ but I stayed in the room with my graphic novels so I could masturbate,” sang Black as he rode a Black Parade float on the beach decked out with the Jamaican flag.
The sketch starred Michael Longfellow as the titular goth kid, awkwardly following his family around the tropical locale in his layered black Hot Topic gear.

Those awkward teenage years — when you were deep in your goth phase and your family decided to take a Caribbean vacation — served as the inspiration for a very funny music video on this weekend’s Saturday Night Live. Michael Longfellow played said teenage goth, donning combat boots, a black trench coat, choker necklace, and eyeliner, as he begrudgingly accompanied his family to Jamaica. The sketch began with a classic reggae tune sung by Kenan Thompson and Ego Nwodim, but eventually transitioned into a parody of My Chemical Romance’s “Welcome to the Black Parade,” with episode host Jack Black portraying the band’s frontman Gerard Way. Watch below.
Along with Black’s Flamin’ Hot Preparation H commercial and a bass potluck jam session, this was definitely one of the standout sketches from this weekend’s SNL.
Meanwhile, My Chemical Romance are back on the road this summer for their “Black Parade” stadium tour.

Netflix has seen great success in backing supernatural dramas, with series like Stranger Things becoming absolute tentpoles for the streamer. Recently, they have commissioned Jesse McKeown – the writer on another supernatural hit, The Umbrella Academy – to write a new show in that genre.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, McKeown, who, aside from The Umbrella Academy adaptation, has written for the crime drama19-2, will head up the efforts on the untitled creature thriller. "Jesse’s bold, ambitious vision offers thrills galore, with the heart of a family drama. We can’t wait to transport our members to coastal Newfoundland with this timely story about community, resilience and adaptability," said Tara Woodbury and Danielle Woodrow, directors of content for Netflix in Canada.

When a TV show has an unforgettable pilot episode, it instantly pulls viewers in for what's to come next. Whether it be the characters, the high-quality production, or the unexpected twists, people grow curious about where the story will go. However, if the series finale is disappointing and poorly conceived, the ending could leave a noticeable stain on the show's legacy and become a part of television infamy.
Shockingly, these TV shows had the best of both worlds since they started so strongly to pull viewers in, only for the final episode to cause them to question whether the investment was worth it. They became the proper definition of having a journey that is far better than the destination. While that first episode will always remain a classic, fans prefer not to think about the underwhelming finale. These criteria are applied to multiple popular shows, such as Game of Thrones,...

One might say that the universe is like one giant cosmic web where everything is connected to everything in one way or the other. It’s like, every decision we make goes on to become a part of a huge interconnected dance. Maybe that’s why they say a time traveler shouldn’t move even a chair in the past. Take Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Ellen DeGeneres’ downfall for example. Is there any way these two polar opposite events in pop culture history can be connected? Well, you’re in for a surprise.

It seems inconceivable that there was a not-too-distant past in which Nu Metal, Emo and Pop Punk were all considered dirty words to "serious" music fans. It has taken a decade or two, but these musical genres and the artists that populate them are finally considered important milestones in guitar music history. That's the positive side of this trade-off.
The more sobering side of the matter is that the genres are the new face of mom and dad's driving songs. You had a bad feeling about this and were singing "to hell with you and all your friends" along to Taking Back Sunday a full 21 years ago at this point. Slipknot's presence would terrify the neighborhood and make people uncomfortable once upon a time, but now they do episodes of Hot Ones and sell Funko Pops. But, the good news is that these are all things to be celebrated and not embarrassed by.

Supacell delivered a fresh superhero story that immediately grabbed attention with a thrilling concept and spectacularly executed episodes in the first season. Netflix has tried several times to get into the superhero genre of TV shows. While they initially found great success with Marvel's Daredevil and a handful of related shows that didn't perform as well, Marvel eventually reclaimed their IP and left Netflix scrambling for a replacement. Again, the streaming giant found success with The Umbrella Academy, a series based on comics by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, but with that show now concluded, they are again searching for another super show.

Few fandoms in the music genre have been as patient as My Chemical Romance fans, partly out of necessity. The band first broke up more than a decade ago, but listeners still held out hope that one day, they may just get back together for one last run. Thankfully, the long wait actually paid off in short bursts for MCR fans.
While it's been 11 years since My Chemical Romance disbanded, they first announced plans to reunite five years ago after a single show in Los Angeles in December 2019. That tour took another couple of years thanks to the pandemic, but when it came time, the world was reminded of our appetite for Gerard, Mikey, Frank and Ray's collective genius. Then, two years ago, MCR dropped their first single in 10 years, and it began to feel like the reunion might herald a rebirth in real terms, with more new music.

The final season of The Umbrella Academy was divisive among fans for many reasons, but one element in particular sparked major controversy: the romance between Aiden Gallagher's Five and Ritu Arya's Lila. Viewers unanimously disliked this pairing for several reasons — one of which being that Lila was already married at that point in time, to Five's brother Diego (David Castaneda) — but Arya has since spoken up about the unpopular relationship, offering a far more favorable opinion.
Speaking with Collider about her newest project, Paris Has Fallen, Arya also addressed fans' less-than-enthusiastic reactions to the romance between Five and Lila. Surprisingly, she seemed to be a fan of their dynamic, stating, "I absolutely loved my storyline. I thought it was really creative and smart. I love art that pushes boundaries and creates conversations." Despite this enthusiasm, however, she did add that the final season's shorter length made it difficult to...

Huge pressure is on The Boys to stick the landing in season 5, but Netflix's botched attempt at ending its own subversive superhero series should serve as a cautionary tale. The glut of superhero movies and TV shows that dominated the 2000s and 2010s triggered an anti-superhero wave in response. At the vanguard of that counter-movement were Prime Video's The Boys and Netflix's The Umbrella Academy, but now that rebellious second wave has gently started receding.
The Umbrella Academy ended in August 2024 with its fourth season, while The Boys season 5 will bring Prime Video's show to a close in 2026. Netflix may have jumped off the "superheroes with a twist" train first, but the form and execution of that leap left a lot to be desired. The Umbrella Academy season 4 went as smoothly as Hughie's New Year's resolution to go an entire season without getting covered in blood, and reviews and...

Rock band My Chemical Romance paid tribute to former drummer Bob Bryar following his death.
“It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to Bob Bryar, our former bandmate and an important part of the history of My Chemical Romance,” band members Gerard Way (lead vocalist), Ray Toro (lead guitarist), Frank Iero (rhythm guitarist) and Mikey Way (bassist) wrote in a joint statement posted to Instagram alongside a photo of Bryar performing.
Bryar had the distinction of being the influential group’s longest-tenured drummer, serving MCR from 2004 to 2010. MCR eventually disbanded in 2013, reuniting in 2019 for a tour, new material, additional festival performances and a forthcoming 2025 stadium tour. Meanwhile, Bryar retired from drumming in 2021, and MCR has not replaced his spot with a full-time drummer since his departure.
“We send our deepest condolences to his friends and family at this time,” the statement continued. “May he rest in peace.

While My Chemical Romance has thankfully reunited in recent years, one track from their beloved back catalog is unlikely to make a grand return. This iconic group, led by lead vocalist and songwriter Gerard Way, was one of the defining bands of the 2000s whose pop punk and emo stylings made them one of the most talked-about groups of their era, even if they themselves rejected being labeled emo. With a talent for putting on incredible live shows, MCR has no issue playing their hits, but there’s one track fans will never hear again live.
Following the release of their major label debut, Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, MCR quickly rose from being an underground alternative rock group into one of the biggest acts on the planet. “We’ll carry on,” Gerard Way insists on My Chemical Romance’s 2006 album The Black Parade. For fans, this lyric in particular became many things: a rallying cry, a promise, a comforting reminder that it was possible to face personal struggles like depression and grief. Since then, The Black Parade’s themes of loss and mortality have continued to strike a chord among listeners. Now, nearly 20 years after its release, the album is poised to take on a new, even larger life as My Chemical Romance will perform it in full across 10 U.

Although Saving Private Ryan has left a cinematic legacy in many ways, I always forget that the movie strongly influenced an emo music video from almost two decades ago. Saving Private Ryan's cast boasts so many big names that I lose track of the established stars that feature in the 1998 war epic. There's no argument that it's one of the best war movies of all time, and Saving Private Ryan's success spreading so far beyond its intended audience is a testament to that fact.
Saving Private Ryan's ending still sticks with me all these years later, and that level of misty-eyed emotion translates strangely well into the emo music video in question. The band featured in the project isn't unique in the use of cinematic influence in their music videos, but they were especially prolific for it. As one of my favorite bands, I'd probably be a...

When singer-songwriter, co-founder, and lead vocalist of My Chemical Romance Gerard Way announced to be writing comic books, many fans were left stunned. However, after multiple series down, Way has produced some inventive and relatable comics, most notably The Umbrella Academy. However, with all great TV or movie adaptations, they mostly become more popular than the source material, reaching a wider audience. This is especially true with The Umbrella Academy, becoming one of the most popular Netflix series to date. While fans might not expect it, the TV show toned down the weirdness and made many other changes while keeping the core and many other aspects intact, ultimately delivering an epic, dysfunctional, and oddly relatable masterpiece.

The Umbrella Academy ended with its fourth season, but there are a couple of spinoffs that I would love to see to expand on this unique universe. Netflixs The Umbrella Academy is based on the comic book series by Gerard Way and Gabriel B, but the show took a lot of creative liberties when bringing this world to life. After many twists and turns and some failed attempts to save the world, The Umbrella Academy ended after four seasons, and though it gave full closure to the Hargreeves and Lila, this universe can still expand with spinoffs.
The Umbrella Academy follows the title team, seven superpowered children adopted by billionaire and scientist Sir Reginald Hargreeves, who trained them and formed a team of superheroes. Season 1 saw them reuniting and trying to prevent the apocalypse, a mission they repeated in every season. The Umbrella Academy season 4 saw the Hargreeves and Lila...

It's no secret that The Umbrella Academy season 4 was not well-received by fans or critics, but Five (Aidan Gallagher) and Lila's (Ritu Arya) romance might have been the most divisive development to unfold during the show's fourth and final outing. Based on the comic book series of the same name by writer Gerard Way and illustrator Gabriel B, The Umbrella Academy centers on a dysfunctional family of adopted superhero siblings, all of whom were born on October 1, 1989, in The Umbrella Academy's original timeline, before being adopted by an eccentric billionaire, Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore).
While he hand-picked the Umbrella Academy's super-powered Hargreeves siblings, Reginald didn't adopt every child who was infused with the superpower-bestowing substance known as Marigold. The vigilante team's original lineup included seven Umbrellas, including the super-strong astronaut Luther (Tom Hopper); the vigilante Diego (David Castaeda), whose powers allow him to control the trajectory of...

Across its four seasons, the story of Netflix's The Umbrella Academy has hinged on time travel, resulting in many branching realities that are difficult to pin down. The Umbrella Academy season 3's ending saw the Hargreeves siblings sacrificing their Marigold and superpowers to fashion a redesigned 2019 timeline. However, that's not where the wild time-hopping stops. In the show's fourth and final outing, The Umbrella Academy's timelines become even more complicated as The Keepers, a conspiracy theorist cult, try to "cleanse" and prune the timeline that the Hargreeves siblings made in season 3.
Based on a series of comic books written by Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel B, The Umbrella Academy's story follows a group of adopted, super-powered siblings who, as fate would have it, were all born on the same day. "He gets opportunities to express certain things to certain people in this season that he really needs to. I think those moments are powerful moments that are a part of his self-acceptance."
Growing up with superpowered siblings didn't come easy for the introverted Viktor. He eventually came into his own once he discovered latent abilities hidden from him by his father Reginal Hargreeves (Colm Feore). But it took a lot of time, patience, and barely-avoided apocalyptic disasters. Viktor's journey culminates into a shocking fight with his ne'er-do-well adopted father.

Netflixs The Umbrella Academy made various changes to the comic books to better fit its format and style, but season 4 put a raunchy spin on one of the Hargreeves comic book origins. The Umbrella Academy is a comic book series created by Gerard Way and Gabriel B, first published in 2007. In 2019, during the peak of dark superhero stories, The Umbrella Academy made the jump to TV thanks to Netflix, and it became one of the platforms most popular TV shows. After four seasons, The Umbrella Academy came to an end, but not without more surprises for the audience.
The Umbrella Academy caught up with the Hargreeves and Lila six years after the ending of season 3, in which they arrived at a new timeline created by Reginald where they had no powers. The Hargreeves parted ways and moved on, living the most normal lives they ever had, but a rescue mission brought them back together.

The Umbrella Academy lives in its own world, but one seemingly unimportant line in season 4 might have teased a shared universe with a surprising TV show. The Umbrella Academy arrived on Netflix during the peak of dark superhero stories and quickly became one of Netflixs most popular TV shows. The following contains spoilers for The Umbrella Academy Season 4, now streaming on Netflix.
When fans learned Season 4 of The Umbrella Academy would end the show, they were very disappointed. They wanted more of the Hargreeves siblings, which makes sense as this is one of the most popular Netflix series. The plot also felt like it could continue for years with all the time-travel and alternate reality shenanigans.
Sadly, all good things must come to an end. Still, with three volumes collected at Dark Horse Comics, the show cleverly melds them all together for the last hurrah. In the process, there are key changes made as The Umbrella Academy brings the curtains down.
