Patti LuPone is facing backlash from the Broadway community for recent comments she made in a new profile.

The 76-year-old three-time Tony-winning actress “is done with Broadway,” according to her new profile in The New Yorker, and it doesn’t seem like she cares about making enemies.

Patti previously received backlash in November 2024 when Tony-winning actress Kecia Lewis, who stars in the musical Hell’s Kitchen, released a public letter to the actress about a situation on Broadway.

While Patti was acting in the play The Roommate in the theatre next door to Hell’s Kitchen, she reached out to the other show’s management and asked them to change their sound cues because she felt they were “too loud.” Kecia called out Patti‘s actions as “bullying” and “racially microaggessive.”

In her New Yorker profile, Patti talked about the situation.

Going into this year’s Grammys, each of the six nominees for Best Musical Theater Album has its own distinct advantages, from involvement of previous nominees/winners to encouraging statistics. So let’s consider the possibilities.

The frontrunner to win based on the official Gold Derby odds is Hell’s Kitchen. It’s a jukebox musical mining the song catalog of Alicia Keys, who also wrote a few original tunes for the show. Jukebox musicals in general tend to be catnip for voters in this category as they contain material voters are familiar with. Previous champs include Jersey Boys, which used the songs of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons; American Idiot, an adaptation of Green Day‘s eponymous 2004 concept album; Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, which featured Carole King‘s song catalog; and Jagged Little Pill, an adaptation of Alanis Morissette‘s 1995 album.

Exclusive: Industry Entertainment veterans Bill Butler and Michelle Kittrell have left after 14 years to join upstart management/production company Amplified, launched earlier this year by fellow longtime Industry managers Adam Levine, Brandy Rivers and Michael Hepburn.

On Sunday, the 77th annual Tony Awards were held, hosted by Broadway and film actress Ariana DeBose at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City. Angelina Jolie and Debra Martin Chase took home the Tony Award for best musical for The Outsiders.

The show takes place in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1967, when Ponyboy Curtis, his best friend, Johnny Cade and their Greaser family of “outsiders” battle with their rivals, the Socs, according to the musical’s description. Over the course of the show, nominated for 12 Tonys, the family members dream about who they want to be in a world that may never accept them.

The musical was up against Hell’s Kitchen, Illinoise, Suffs and Water for Elephants for the final award of the evening. Among industry members, the best musical category was the most up in the air leading up to the Tony Awards — though Hell’s Kitchen and The Outsiders were viewed by many as the leading contenders. Keys was wheeled out on stage playing piano and kicked off singing the song, before trading verses with Maleah Joi Moon, a Tony nominee who stars in the musical loosely based on Keys’ life growing up in New York. Keys raised a first in the air and got the crowd on its feet singing before throwing it over to Jay-Z.

Tony Awards nominations were announced on Tuesday, April 30 by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Renée Elise Goldsberry. While the nominations for the 77th annual Tony Awards were determined by approximately 60 theatre professionals, winners were decided by hundreds of members of the Broadway community.

A whopping 36 shows were eligible for consideration by the nominating committee. On the play side, there were 10 original works and five revivals in the running for nominations. Over on the musical side, 15 new tuners were in contention for bids as were six musical revivals. The cutoff date for eligibility was Thursday, April 25.

The Drama League Awards unveiled their slate of winners at an in-person ceremony on Friday, May 17. The event was hosted by Frank Dilella at the Ziegfeld Ballroom, where attendees toasted the best of Broadway and Off-Bradway.

The biggest winner of the day was Sarah Paulson, who claimed the coveted Distinguished Performance Award for her fiery role in “Appropriate.” That play, by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, also took home the League’s trophy for Best Revival of a Play.

Winners of the 2024 Lucille Lortel Awards, honoring outstanding achievements in Off-Broadway theater, were announced on Sunday, May 5, in a ceremony at NYU Skirball. The show was hosted by Rosalind Chao, Jen Colella, Michael Esper, 2024 Tony nominee Eden Espinosa (“Lempicka”), 2024 Tony nominee Nikki M. James (“Suffs”) and Bd Wong. It was a banner evening for Ars Nova. Not only did the theater company receive an honorary award for Best Body of Work, their show “(pray)” was also the top winner of the night. Four other productions earned multiple awards, with “Buena Vista Social Club,” “The Comeuppance,” “Stereophonic,” and “Wet Brain” each claiming two prizes.

Alicia Keys is speaking out after making Broadway history with her new musical Hell’s Kitchen.

The musical features a score written by Alicia, including many of her greatest hits and some new songs written for the show. The story is loosely based on the Grammy winner’s childhood growing up in New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood in a building full of artists.

Alicia Keys was doing a meditation Tuesday morning to try to stay calm amid some nerves ahead of the Tony nominations announcement.

After finishing the meditation, Keys said she received a call, alerting her to the fact that Hell’s Kitchen, the semi-autobiographical musical for which she wrote the score and arranged the music, had been nominated for 13 Tony Awards, including best musical. And that’s when she lost her cool.

“I kind of lost it, kind of freaked out, and I was super excited, particularly that all of the collaborators on this project are seeing so much love and so much greatness for their brilliance. I’m so excited for everybody and for Hell’s Kitchen. It’s just like, “Whoa!,” Keys said.

Keys has been working on this project for 13 years, with collaborators including book writer Kristoffer Diaz, director Michael Greif and choreographer Camille A Brown, and an Off-Broadway run in the fall.

In a Broadway season bursting at the seams with new musicals, plays and revivals – 36 productions opened during the 2023-2024 eligibility window – it is not a surprise that the 60 Tony Awards nominators caught theatre aficionados off guard with some of their choices.

The biggest surprise of the morning was the overperformance of new musical “Water for Elephants.” Our users only expected it to earn one nomination, but it ultimately ended up with seven, tying “Merrily We Roll Along” and beating out musicals such as “Suffs.” Its unexpected bids include the top category of Best Musical, director Jessica Stone, book and choreography. The one bid we thought it would land for featured actor Paul Alexander Nolan didn’t actually come to fruition. Speaking of surprise director noms, Michael Greif – who worked on three musicals this season – broke through for “Hell’s Kitchen.” He ranked ninth in our combined odds.

Daniel Radcliffe’s post-“Harry Potter” career has long been dominated by his theater work, both in New York and London. On April 30, he finally scored his first Tony nomination, for his role in the musical “Merrily We Roll Along.”

Radcliffe’s buzzy stage work began in 2007 with a run in “Equus” on both sides of the pond. He powered a delightful, blockbuster revival of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” in 2011 (Grammy nomination), and since then, he has chosen an eclectic mix of projects, work where his name alone can often get challenging — or even just serious — work funded. Broadway fans: the 2024 Tony Award nominations are finally here!

Each year, the Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Broadway Theatre (aka the Tonys), celebrates the best on Broadway. The nominations were announced by two past Tony winners: Take Me Out‘s Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Hamilton‘s Renée Elise Goldsberry.

The 2024 Tony Awards nominations were announced on Tuesday, May 2 by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Renée Elise Goldsberry. The reveal of the roster of contenders was carried on the Tonys YouTube channel. While the nominations for the 77th annual Tony Awards were determined by a few dozen theater professionals, winners will be decided by upwards of 800 members of the Broadway community.

Three dozen shows were eligible for consideration by the nominating committee. On the play side, there are 10 original works and five revivals in the running. Over on the musical side, 15 new tuners were in contention as were six musical revivals. The cutoff date for eligibility was April 27.

The Tony Awards are set for June 16 at Lincoln Center and will be hosted for the third year in a row by Oscar winner Ariana DeBose.

A new musical, a musical revival and a new play with music will dominate the 2024 Tony Awards nominations, according to our official odds in 17 of the 26 categories. The latest revival of the classic John Kander and Fred Ebb musical “Cabaret,” fresh off a smash run on the West End, and the new musical “Hell’s Kitchen” that is loosely based on the life of Alicia Keys and her music will both net at least seven nominations. New works “Days of Wine and Roses,” “Here Lies Love” and “Suffs” and the starry revival of Stephen Sondheim‘s notorious flop “Merrily We Roll Along” will also earn substantial nominations tallies.

The 2023-2024 Broadway season that kicked off last June with the opening of “Grey House” featured 36 productions of new and revived musicals and plays. The nominees for the 2024 Drama League Awards were announced April 22, 2024, by Vanessa Williams and past Drama League winner Bebe Neuwirth. Winners will be announced during the 90th Annual Drama League Awards ceremony at the Ziegfeld Ballroom on Friday, May 17.

These kudos honor both Broadway and Off-Broadway productions and are famous for their catch-all acting category, the Distinguished Performance Award. An actor can only win it once in their career. After they have won, they can never be nominated again. This year, a whopping 54 performers are nominated.

“It’s not just about setting time and space, but it’s also about the dancers being time and being space,” explains Camille A. Brown of her work on “Hell’s Kitchen.” The choreographer found that the 1990s setting of the script, combined with music from Alicia Keys, allowed her to explore movement from multiple entry points. “Hell’s Kitchen” tells the story of Ali (Maleah Joi Moon), loosely adapted from Keys’ own coming-of-age journey in New York City. She lives in Manhattan Plaza, an artist residence in Hell’s Kitchen, under the eye of her over-protective mother (Shoshana Bean). Ali longs to dive into the beating heart of the city and live on her own terms. A chance encounter with a pianist in the building (Kecia Lewis) sets her on a path of self-discovery.

Alicia Keys is celebrating the opening night of her new Broadway musical Hell’s Kitchen!

The Grammy-winning superstar matched in denim with the show’s young star Maleah Joi Moon on the red carpet on Saturday night (April 20) at the Shubert Theatre in New York City.

Maleah plays Ali, a character based on Alicia‘s younger self. The musical features many of the singer’s smash hit songs as well as some brand new tunes written for the show.

Also in attendance at the event were Shoshana Bean and Brandon Victor Dixon, who play Ali’s parents, and Kecia Lewis, who plays Ali’s piano teacher and mentor.

Lempicka is officially open on Broadway and there was a Wicked reunion on opening night!

Eden Espinosa received support from fellow Wicked alum Shoshana Bean at the opening night performance of her new musical on Sunday (April 14) at the Longacre Theatre in New York City.

For those who don’t know, Eden and Shoshana both got their big breaks as the standby for Elphaba during Idina Menzel‘s run in Wicked on Broadway. Both of them later became full-time Elphaba stars and had long runs in the beloved musical.

Eden is now leading the ambitious new show Lempicka, one of the only fully original musicals of the season. She was joined on the red carpet by co-stars Amber Iman, Beth Leavel, Andrew Samonsky, George Abud, Natalie Joy Johnson, Nathaniel Stampley, and Zoe Glick.

Nominations for the 39th Annual Lucille Lortel Awards were announced today by Amber Iman and George Abud, two stars of Broadway’s “Lempicka.” The Lortels honor outstanding achievement in Off-Broadway theater. The 2024 ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 5 at NYU Skirball Center. The Lucille Lortel Awards are produced by the Off-Broadway League and Lucille Lortel Theatre, with additional support provided by Tdf.

It’s common for productions to begin their life Off-Broadway before transferring to the Main Stem, so many of this year’s Tony Awards hopefuls are among the list of Lortel nominations. Chief among these contenders is “Hell’s Kitchen,” the semi-autobiographical musical from Alicia Keys. That tuner garnered five Lortel nominations. These include Best Musical, Best Choreography for Camille A. Brown, a Lead Performer bid for Maleah Joi Moon, and Featured Performer bids for Shoshana Bean and Kecia Lewis. All performance categories at the Lortel Awards are gender neutral.

In the top category of Best Musical, our savvy users predict three shows are out front: “Suffs,” with music and lyrics by Shaina Taub, “The Notebook,” with score by Ingrid Michaelson and “Here Lies Love,” featuring a score by David Byrne and Fatboy Slim. The acclaimed Off Broadway cast of the Alicia Keys musical Hell’s Kitchen will make the move to Broadway when the show begins previews next month, producers announced today.

Starring in the Broadway staging will be Shoshana Bean (Mr. Saturday Night), Brandon Victor Dixon (Hamilton), Kecia Lewis (Ain’t Misbehavin’) and, in their Broadway debuts, Chris Lee and Maleah Joi Moon.

The casting was announced today by producer Akw Productions. Previews begin at Broadway’s Shubert Theatre on Thursday, March 28, with an opening night set for Saturday, April 20.

Hell’s Kitchen features music and lyrics by Keys and book by Kristoffer Diaz. Michael Greif directs, with choreography by Camille A. Brown.

Filmmaker Eric Branco, best known for his work as a cinematographer on films like Clemency and The 40-Year-Old Version, has signed on to make his feature directorial debut with the drama Silent Partner for Black Man Films

Based on a short film of the same name, Silent Partner is written by actor and Black Man Films co-founder Roderick Lawrence, James J. Johnson, and Branco. The pic follows a Black attorney in New York who is thrust into a stand-your-ground case by a senior partner. He is asked to defend a white woman who has murdered a Black teen. The story focuses on the attorney’s moral struggle, his relationship with his wife, and the black professional experience of microaggressions in the workplace and systemic racism in the justice system. The film began production last week in New York City. Cast features Roderick Lawrence, Susan Heyward, Eric Nelsen, and Jeff Perry.
