'Jurassic Park' Fans Should Revisit Gareth Edwards’ 'Monsters'
Image
As Jurassic World Rebirth stomps toward a summer release in July 2025, how director Gareth Edwards handles the $260 million spectacle will be fascinating. After all, those familiar with the British filmmaker's path to Hollywood know that he broke onto the scene with the effective low-budget creature feature Monsters in 2010. With Monsters, Edwards proved the adage that necessity is the mother of invention, overcoming the lack of money and resources through hard work and ingenuity.

Beyond its own merits, Monsters is recommended as a measuring stick charting the creative evolution of Edwards, graduating from independently made movies with shoestring budgets to the top of Hollywood's A-list directors of big-scale marvels like Godzilla, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and now Jurassic World Rebirth. In his feature debut, Monsters proved Edward's filmmaking aplomb and eye for dazzling visual effects.

A Party Enigmatically Descends Into a Symphony of Chaos in Luke Eberl & Edgar Morais’ ‘We Won’t Forget’
Image
A truly collective production, led by multi-hyphenate creatives Luke Eberl and Edgar Morais from cross-continental Volpana_ productions with an enthralling lead performance from co-writer Whitney Able, We Won’t Forget opens with an almost imperceptibly weighted energy as we are swept through a buzzing LA party and into a whirlwind of progressively inexplicable shifting emotions. Eberl and Morais wanted to explore the increasingly worrying complex relationship we have with social media and herd mentality; both of which can cause us to lose all sense of reason and decorum. We Won’t Forget – filmed on super 16mm which presents dreamy visuals befitting the communal haze that comes over the group of friends as their host crumbles in front of their eyes – is a film rich in commentary about groupthink and our instinct to capture even the slightest social infraction for digital consumption. We speak to the directorial duo about their intuitive working relationship,...

Jurassic City | How Gareth Edwards’ Jurassic Park sequel could bring his filmmaking career full-circle
Image
We look ahead to Gareth Edwards’ Jurassic City, what it might be like, and how it connects to his very earliest work.

In the press tour for his 2023 sci-fi film The Creator, British director Gareth Edwards suggested that, after the bruising experiences of making 2014’s Godzilla and in particular 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, he wouldn’t rush to go back to studio filmmaking again.

Suggesting that both of those films had started production without finalised scripts, Edwards said as recently as January that “I have to concentrate on personal and original projects.”

This stance appeared to change rather abruptly just one month later, when Universal approached Edwards with the offer to direct the next Jurassic Park (or Jurassic World) sequel. Original director David Leitch had dropped out, and with the film’s production racing to meet a self-set 2025 release date, Universal Pictures needed a replacement in a...

The 20 Best Monster Movies of the 21st Century
Image
[Editor’s Note: this list was originally published October 2017. It has since been updated to coincide with the release of “Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire.”]

From a certain perspective, monster movies might not seem to be as relevant during monstrous times. But in an age when our fears seem larger than life and the world constantly seems as though it’s on the brink of collapse, the best examples of the genre can almost assume a documentary-like authenticity, reflecting our reality as vividly as vérité ever could.

“The Babadook” might be about a demon that pops out of a children’s book, but no recent film does a better job of capturing the acute reality of living with grief. “Cloverfield” follows a gaggle of pre-Instagram model millennials as they’re chased around Manhattan by a bug-eyed colossus, but few of the somber post-9/11 dramas do a better job of distilling the heartsick chaos of watching your hometown try to make sense of a senseless attack. “The Village” is...

The 65 Best Sci-Fi Movies of the 21st Century, from ‘Melancholia’ and ‘M3GAN’ to ‘Asteroid City’
Image
[Editor’s Note: This list was originally published in May 2016 and has since been updated.]

So…what is sci-fi? It’s not the easiest question to answer when “sci-fi elements” permeate so many of the biggest blockbusters: thought-provoking genre concepts flattened into one-size-fits-all franchise fodder that make countless titles “feel” and, on occasion, even look the same.

Yes, science fiction is rooted in profound origins, examining humanity’s deep-seated fear of itself and the intimidating possibility of worlds unknown. But the last two decades have seen a metaphoric rush on sci-fi storytelling that’s left the once niche subgenre a supersaturated movie market. On the one hand, that’s produced an onslaught of sci-fi(ish) titles that aren’t always up to snuff. But on the other, it’s prompted some of the best sci-fi films ever made. Masterworks like “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “Nope” both arrived in the past two years, and top our list at number five and number eight respectively.

‘The Creator’ Director Gareth Edwards Believes Big-Budget Franchises Can Adopt His More Affordable Approach
Image
Gareth Edwards has made films at both ends of the budget spectrum, and his latest sci-fi film, The Creator, is his valiant attempt to find a balance between the two.

In his feature directorial debut, Monsters (2010), Edwards received a crash course in independent guerrilla filmmaking, as he roamed around Latin America with Scoot McNairy, Whitney Able and a skeleton crew, shooting an original sci-fi film on the fly with prosumer-grade equipment. With a determination to find real-world locations that were compelling in and of themselves, Edwards minimized any dependency on VFX augmentation, allowing him to cut together his movie and then composite only the VFX elements that were absolutely necessary.

And following his experiences as the director of the $160 million-budgeted Godzilla (2014) and the $220-million Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), Edwards wanted the best of both worlds for his new John David Washington-led sci-fi film about a war between humans and AI.

The Creator: India Booking Opened, Release Date, and Why You Should Watch This Film
Image
The Creator is a sci-fi film directed by Gareth Edwards, the visionary behind Monsters, Godzilla, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The film stars John David Washington, Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, Allison Janney, and newcomer Madeleine Yuna Voyles. The film is set in a future war between humans and artificial intelligence, where a former soldier (Washington) is tasked with hunting down and killing the Creator, the elusive mastermind of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon that can end the war and mankind itself. However, he discovers that the weapon is actually an AI in the form of a young child (Voyles), and he must decide whether to follow his orders or protect her.

The Creator is one of the most anticipated films of 2023, and it is finally coming to India on September 29. The film will only be available in English and is not getting dubbed in Hindi,...

After ‘Rogue One’ and ‘Godzilla,’ Gareth Edwards Wants to Revolutionize How Studio Films Get Made With ‘The Creator’
Image
When Gareth Edwards directed his first movie, the 2010 indie “Monsters,” it could scarcely have been a more DIY endeavor. He had less than $500,000 to tell an intimate story about two Americans contending with giant aliens rampaging through Mexico, so his crew consisted of just his actors (Scoot McNairy and Whitney Able), a sound tech, a line producer, a translator and a driver. Edwards operated the camera, grabbing footage guerrilla style whenever they came upon a compelling location while traveling through Central America. Then the young director created all 250 visual effects shots for the film himself, alone in his flat.

Thirteen years later, Edwards’ latest film, “The Creator,” is in so many ways the opposite of “Monsters.” The budget is $80 million. 20th Century Studios is distributing it worldwide. (New Regency and Entertainment One co-financed.) Dozens of actors — including John David Washington, Allison Janney and Ken Watanabe — filmed across Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam,...

Rogue One Director Reveals Star Wars Lessons Brought Into New Sci-Fi Movie
Image
Star Wars is more of a fairytale or biblical epic samurai film than just science fiction, as it blends elements from the past and the future. The juxtaposition of ancient spirituality with futuristic cityscapes in Asia inspired the aesthetic of The Creator. Gareth Edwards prioritizes character development and human drama over flashy action sequences, creating a unique blend of character drama and blockbuster filmmaking.

With the two seemingly sharing similar genre roots, Rogue One director Gareth Edwards is sharing the lessons he learned from the Star Wars prequel that he brought to The Creator. The latest sci-fi effort from Edwards is set in a dystopian future in which humanity are in an intense war with artificial intelligence, who have developed a mysterious new weapon that has the power to put an end to both humanity and the war. The Creator centers on John David Washington's Joshua, an ex-special forces...

Scoot McNairy and Whitney Able in Monsters (2010)

Scoot McNairy and Whitney Able in Monsters (2010)
Monsters

Monsters, Pluto TV

One of the many sites in the UK where you can now stream movies for free, Pluto has an eclectic mix. Among its gems is this outing from Rogue One director Gareth Edwards, which is set six years after an alien invasion of Earth, when the creatures have been confined to an "infected zone". The plot revolves around a photographer (Scott McNairy), who is desperate for a snap of one of the monsters but given a trickier assignment by his boss - to rescue his daughter (Whitney Able). Edward keeps his monsters subtle as the pair end up on a road trip that blossoms with unexpected romance, with the special effects all the more remarkable given that the director knocked them up at home. Here he proves less can certainly be more.

Judy, 10.35pm, BBC1, Wednesday, 16 February

Director Gareth Edwards, who impressed skeptical audiences with his work on the 2016 mega-franchise’s inaugural spinoff film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, hit the ground running back in 2010 with his feature debut, Monsters. Scoot McNairy and Whitney Able in Monsters (2010)
9 incredible low-budget science fiction movies: Moon, Monsters, Primer
Scoot McNairy and Whitney Able in Monsters (2010)
The advent of nimble digital cameras and cutting edge visual effects has meant that filmmakers have been able to mount increasingly ambitious sci-fi stories on relatively small budgets.

This week sees the release of Monsters: Dark Continent, a follow-up to Gareth Edwards' brilliant 2010 debut Monsters. Not only did Monsters shoot Edwards to the big time, putting him in the director's chair for Godzilla and next year's Star Wars: Rogue One, but it also only cost less than $500,000 to make.

Below, we look at 11 incredible science fiction movies that prove you can make a great movie for just a fraction of what Avengers: Age of Ultron cost ($280 million, apparently!).

Dark Star (1974)

Production budget: $60,000

How many could you make for the price of Avengers: 4666

Monsters: Dark Continent review
Giant alien creatures spread to the Middle East in the sequel Monsters: Dark Continent. Here's Ryan's review...

Giant bioluminescent space creatures dominated the horizon but not the plot in Gareth Edwards’ breakthrough film, Monsters. Shot run-and-gun style by Edwards and a tiny crew, Monsters was an unusual blend of road-trip drama with light touches of sci-fi; its focus was the growing friendship between a photograph journalist (Scoot McNairy) and his boss's daughter (Whitney Able) travelling across a Central America ravaged not so much by the title’s Lovecraftian kaiju but by a military intent on keeping them well away from American soil.

Monsters’ success saw Edwards move to Hollywood, where he’s so far headlined the daddy of all kaiju movies, Godzilla, and now set to head up another pop culture giant - the Star Wars spin-off, Rogue One. This left production company Vertigo with a potential franchise on its hands,...

Ava’s Possessions | 2015 SXSW Film Festival Review
Low Spirits: Galland’s Energetic Supernatural Comedy Doesn’t Retain Dominion

The increasingly tenuous distinction between what constitutes either horror or comedy is further exemplified in Ava’s Possessions, the third feature from multifaceted Jordan Galland. A modified spin on the popular subgenre of demonic possession and exorcism titles that we’ve long been familiar with, Galland’s latest is a comedy marinated generously with supernatural elements. Amusing yet never as clever as one would hope it to be, this plays rather like the simple structure of mainstream fodder like The Hangover parading around in a Halloween costume. Those hoping for something eerie, creepy, or atmospheric will be disappointed, but fans of its attractive cast and some impressive production elements makes this more appealing than dubious detractors may predict.

Ava’s (Louisa Krause) been possessed by a demon for the past month, but with the support of her parents (Deborah Rush,...

Take A Walk Among The Tombstones On Blu-Ray Next January
Though Liam Neeson has propelled many an action thriller to big box office numbers, his gritty noir A Walk Among the Tombstones was not what you’d call a big hit – and that’s a shame, considering that the hard-boiled detective story is a much better movie than Unknown, Taken 2 and Non-Stop added together. Luckily, for those of you who missed it in theaters, Universal Studios Home Entertainment has just announced that it will be bringing A Walk Among the Tombstones to Blu-Ray on January 13th next year.

The Blu-Ray will include a 1080p resolution transfer and a DTS-hd Master Audio 5.1 track. Additionally, a DVD, Uv digital copy and iTunes-compatible digital copy will be included on the release. Special features include:

Matt Sudder: Private Eye – Author Lawrence Block and Screenwriter/Director Scott Frank discuss the complex character of Matt Scudder and how he transforms from page to screen. (Blu-ray...

Monsters: Dark Continent Trailer Features Monsters, Monsters and More Monsters
Part of the reason Gareth Edwards’ Monsters was such a remarkable film was because you walked in expecting an action-heavy alien invasion-type movie, but wound up getting a layered, moving relationship drama with the ever-present threat of the title characters relegated to the background. Not everyone appreciated the unique take, but for those of you who were hoping for more monsters, it looks as though you’ll get your wish in the Monsters sequel, Monsters: Dark Continent. We’ve got a brand new trailer for the second film and in just over two minutes of footage, there’s already significantly more creatures, action and destruction than in the first one. Hit the jump to check it all out in the Monsters: Dark Continent trailer for yourself. The film is due for a theatrical release in the UK on November 28th, but, at the moment, Monsters 2 does not have domestic distribution.

The top 25 underappreciated films of 2010
Odd List Ryan Lambie Simon Brew 27 Feb 2014 - 05:54

Our series of lists devoted to underappreciated films brings us to the year 2010, and another 25 overlooked gems...

By 2010, Hollywood’s obsession with 3D movies was in full swing. James Cameron’s Avatar may have given audiences a taste of what the cutting edge of stereoscope could look like, but it has to be said that the movies ushered into cinemas in its wake were a decidedly mixed bunch. Toy Story 3's 3D was extraordinarily effective, yet Clash Of The Titans looked like a blurry mess. How To Train Your Dragon came to life in its flying sequences, but the less said about the horribly murky Last Airbender, the better.

Unless we’re mistaken, none of the movies on this list were shot or released in 3D, and few of them did particularly stellar business. A few got a certain amount of critical acclaim,...

Review: "All The Boys Love Mandy Lane" On Blu-ray
By Todd Garbarini

Amber Heard was nineteen when she played the title character in Jonathan Levine's slasher film All the Boys Love Mandy Lane; she can at least get away with playing a seventeen year-old. Mandy Lane, which debuts this month on Blu-ray, is better known for its reputation of having been shelved for seven years following its debut at the 2006 Toronto Film Festival for reasons best served by another article. Up to this point, Ms. Heard was already a veteran of four films and several television appearances; this is her first real starring role, as the film rests on her shoulders. She gives quite a remarkably natural performance and having seen her work since this 2005-lensed outing, I would attribute her onscreen “nervousness” as the object of affection by testosterone-driven wolves in her midst to her skill as a serious dramatic actress than to an inability to relax...
