In the press tour for his 2023 sci-fi film The Creator, British director Gareth Edwards suggested that, after the bruising experiences of making 2014’s Godzilla and in particular 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, he wouldn’t rush to go back to studio filmmaking again.

Suggesting that both of those films had started production without finalised scripts, Edwards said as recently as January that “I have to concentrate on personal and original projects.”

This stance appeared to change rather abruptly just one month later, when Universal approached Edwards with the offer to direct the next Jurassic Park (or Jurassic World) sequel. So…what is sci-fi? It’s not the easiest question to answer when “sci-fi elements” permeate so many of the biggest blockbusters: thought-provoking genre concepts flattened into one-size-fits-all franchise fodder that make countless titles “feel” and, on occasion, even look the same.

Yes, science fiction is rooted in profound origins, examining humanity’s deep-seated fear of itself and the intimidating possibility of worlds unknown. But the last two decades have seen a metaphoric rush on sci-fi storytelling that’s left the once niche subgenre a supersaturated movie market. On the one hand, that’s produced an onslaught of sci-fi(ish) titles that aren’t always up to snuff. But on the other, it’s prompted some of the best sci-fi films ever made. Masterworks like “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “Nope” both arrived in the past two years, and top our list at number five and number eight respectively.

Gareth Edwards has made films at both ends of the budget spectrum, and his latest sci-fi film, The Creator, is his valiant attempt to find a balance between the two.

In his feature directorial debut, Monsters (2010), Edwards received a crash course in independent guerrilla filmmaking, as he roamed around Latin America with Scoot McNairy, Whitney Able and a skeleton crew, shooting an original sci-fi film on the fly with prosumer-grade equipment. With a determination to find real-world locations that were compelling in and of themselves, Edwards minimized any dependency on VFX augmentation, allowing him to cut together his movie and then composite only the VFX elements that were absolutely necessary.

And following his experiences as the director of the $160 million-budgeted Godzilla (2014) and the $220-million Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), Edwards wanted the best of both worlds for his new John David Washington-led sci-fi film about a war between humans and AI.

The Creator is a sci-fi film directed by Gareth Edwards, the visionary behind Monsters, Godzilla, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. When Gareth Edwards directed his first movie, the 2010 indie “Monsters,” it could scarcely have been a more DIY endeavor. He had less than $500,000 to tell an intimate story about two Americans contending with giant aliens rampaging through Mexico, so his crew consisted of just his actors (Scoot McNairy and Whitney Able), a sound tech, a line producer, a translator and a driver. Edwards operated the camera, grabbing footage guerrilla style whenever they came upon a compelling location while traveling through Central America. One of the many sites in the UK where you can now stream movies for free, Pluto has an eclectic mix. Among its gems is this outing from Rogue One director Gareth Edwards, which is set six years after an alien invasion of Earth, when the creatures have been confined to an "infected zone". The plot revolves around a photographer (Scott McNairy), who is desperate for a snap of one of the monsters but given a trickier assignment by his boss - to rescue his daughter (Whitney Able). Edward keeps his monsters subtle as the pair end up on a road trip that blossoms with unexpected romance, with the special effects all the more remarkable given that the director knocked them up at home. The debut narrative feature by director Nick Basile (American Carny), indie thriller Dark - written by Elias (Gut) and executive produced by Joe Dante (Gremlins) – will make its world premiere at the Oldenburg International Film Festival this September.

Funded partially through Kickstarter, the film is set in New York during the Northeast blackout of 2003 and centers on a disturbed young woman trapped alone in a loft during the outage. Dark stars Whitney Able (Monsters), Alexandra Breckenridge (The Walking Dead), Brendan Sexton III (Boys Don’t Cry), and Michael Eklund (The Call).

Dubbed the “European Sundance”, the Oldenburg International Film Festival runs this year from September 16th – 20th.

Luckily, for those of you who missed it in theaters, Universal Studios Home Entertainment has just announced that it will be bringing A Walk Among the Tombstones to Blu-Ray on January 13th next year.

The Blu-Ray will include a 1080p resolution transfer and a DTS-hd Master Audio 5.1 track. Additionally, a DVD, Uv digital copy and iTunes-compatible digital copy will be included on the release. Special features include:

Synopsis

Set in NYC during the blackout of 2003, Kate, a struggling 30-something model with a troubled past, has just moved into her girlfriend Leah's Brooklyn loft, but already doubts about their relationship have begun to loom. When Leah leaves for the weekend, Kate unexpectedly finds herself alone in the apartment in the midst of the worst blackout in North American history. As darkness falls over the city, Kate's paranoia grows and she begins to believe someone in the building is stalking her.

Part of the reason Gareth Edwards’ Monsters was such a remarkable film was because you walked in expecting an action-heavy alien invasion-type movie, but wound up getting a layered, moving relationship drama with the ever-present threat of the title characters relegated to the background. Not everyone appreciated the unique take, but for those of you who were hoping for more monsters, it looks as though you’ll get your wish in the Monsters sequel, Monsters: Dark Continent. We’ve got a brand new trailer for the second film and in just over two minutes of footage, there’s already significantly more creatures, action and destruction than in the first one. Casting News for Recovery: “Kirby Bliss Blanton (The Green Inferno, Project X) and Samuel Larsen (“Glee”) have been cast in the upcoming thriller “Recovery”, starting production this summer. The film follows Blanton’s character on the night of her high school graduation after her iPhone is stolen and tracked down with a “find my iPhone” app to a house where the demented tenants plan on kidnapping her and making her part of the family. Alex Shaffer (Win Win) and James Landry Hébert (Two Step, Gangster Squad) are also on board to star.

The Runner

"Revenge" star Madeleine Stowe has signed on to star opposite Nicolas Cage's congressman character in Austin Stark's political drama "The Runner" for Paper Street Films and Back Lot Pictures. Filming begins in New Orleans in June.

Stowe plays Deborah Price, the congressman's wife. The pair are stuck in a dead marriage in which she ignores her husband's publicly revealed infidelities because the pair are bound together by ambition and power. [Source: Deadline]

Whitney Able (Monsters) and Alexandra Breckenridge (American Horror Story) lead the cast.

It didn't take long for Nick Basile's thriller Dark to surpass its fundraising goal on Kickstarter last year, and it no doubt helped that Joe Dante's name was attached to the project. As production gets ready to begin, the cast has just been filled out, and we've got the latest for ya today.

Variety reports that The Call and "Bates Motel"'s Michael Eklund and Boys Don't Cry's Brendan Sexton have rounded out the cast of the psychological thriller, which will also star Whitney Able (Monsters) and Alexandra Breckenridge ("American Horror Story").

In the film, written by Elias and directed by Basile, Able plays a disturbed young woman who must confront her worst fears when she finds herself trapped alone in a New York City loft during the 2003 blackout.

Kathryn Belli, Dave Boulton, Basile, and Elias will produce alongside executive producer Joe Dante and his company Renfield Productions.

The upcoming thriller is based off Highslith’s novel The Blunderer. Set in 1960s New York, the novel follows Walter Stackhouse (Wilson), a successful architect who lives the perfect life with his wife, Clara (Biel). Stackhouse’s life slips into chaos, however, when he becomes fascinated with an unsolved murder that forces him into contact with a killer (Jones) and an ambitious detective.

Young Adult and Martha Marcy May Marlene star Louisa Krause is set to join Cathy Moriarty, Lou Taylor Pucci (Evil Dead), and more for the supernatural thriller Ava's Possessions from director Jordan Galland (Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Undead).

Whitney Able, Annabelle Dexter-Jones, John Ventimiglia, Waris Ahluwalia, Jemima Kirke, Stella Schnabel, Geneva Carr, Alysia Reiner, and Tarik Lowe co-star in the film, which will shoot in NYC this summer.

As per Deadline, musician Sean Lennon has signed on to score the film, having previously scored and co-starred in Galland's movie Alter Egos, which was released via Kevin Smith's SModcast Presents banner.

Maren Olson of Traction Media is producing with Carlos Velazquez of C Plus Pictures.

Amber Heard was nineteen when she played the title character in Jonathan Levine's slasher film All the Boys Love Mandy Lane; she can at least get away with playing a seventeen year-old. Mandy Lane, which debuts this month on Blu-ray, is better known for its reputation of having been shelved for seven years following its debut at the 2006 Toronto Film Festival for reasons best served by another article. Up to this point, Ms. Heard was already a veteran of four films and several television appearances; this is her first real starring role, as the film rests on her shoulders. She gives quite a remarkably natural performance and having seen her work since this 2005-lensed outing, I would attribute her onscreen “nervousness” as the object of affection by testosterone-driven wolves in her midst to her skill as a serious dramatic actress than to an inability to relax...

We have been talking about All the Boys Love Mandy Lane for along time. The film received a very limited release and has gathered some great reviews.
