‘Prodigal Son’ Update: HBO Max Passes, Series Still Being Shopped To Other Outlets Post-Fox Cancellation
Image
A major option for cancelled Fox drama series Prodigal Son is no longer on the table. I hear HBO Max has passed on the opportunity to pick up the series killer drama starring Michael Sheen and Tom Payne.

HBO Max, whose sibling Warner Bros. TV is the lead studio on Prodigal Son and spearheading the effort to find a new home for it, was considered a logical destination as it already has streaming rights to the two existing seasons of the show. But I hear the streamer didn’t have space, and opted not to pick up a third season of Prodigal Son.

Despite the setback, I hear the studio remains hopeful as they are pursuing other potential buyers. “Wbtv is shopping it as we speak,” Prodigal Son creators Chris Fedak and Sam Sklaver told Deadline two days ago in an interview, in which they talked about the Season 2 finale...

Image
Spoiler Alert: The following story contains details from the series finale of Prodigal Son.

On Monday, Fox/Wbtv’s procedural drama Prodigal Son came to an abrupt end, offering resolution as to the fate of Malcolm (Tom Payne), his serial killer father Martin (Michael Sheen), and Martin’s psychotic one-time paramour, Vivian Capshaw (Catherine Zeta-Jones).

‘Prodigal Son’ Canceled By Fox After 2 Seasons
Image
Fox has opted not to renew drama Prodigal Son for a third season. It is unclear yet whether leading studio Warner Bros TV would be shopping the series elsewhere. Sibling streamer HBO Max, which has previous seasons of Prodigal Son, would be a logical destination for the serialized serial killer drama.

Sophomore Prodigal Son, co-produced by Fox Entertainment, was a true bubble show. It was the last Fox drama to get a renewal last year, a move that didn’t come until after the upfronts, and it came down to the wire again for the series. It was liked creatively at the network, and there was a will to try and find a path to bring the series back, with various scenarios explored.

Its linear ratings were pretty modest — Prodigal Son was the lowest-rated among the current Fox drama series — but it has been doing well in digital viewing. The remaining three Fox drama series,...

‘Prodigal Son’ Canceled After Two Seasons at Fox
Image
Fox has canceled “Prodigal Son” after two seasons, Variety has learned.

The news comes ahead of the second season finale, which is scheduled to air on May 18. That episode will now serve as the series finale. An insider with knowledge of the situation characterized the move to cancel the series as a difficult one, but went on to say that the show’s ratings did not justify a third season.

The series follows Malcolm Bright (Tom Payne), a criminal profiler with a rare talent for getting inside the minds of killers. He learned how they think because his father, Dr. Martin Whitly Dr. Martin Whitly (Michael Sheen), was a notorious serial killer known as “The Surgeon.” Now he’s using his twisted genius to help the NYPD solve their most puzzling murders.

‘Prodigal Son’ Showrunners on Bright and Dani’s Future: ‘How Do You Keep Those Two Apart?’
Michael Sheen and Tom Payne in Prodigal Son (2019)
The first half of “Prodigal Son’s” second season comes to a close with Tuesday’s episode, “Face Value,” which comes one week after Malcolm Bright (Tom Payne) had an injury-induced dream in which his father, Martin (Michael Sheen) had never been caught for being a serial killer. In that episode, “Head Case,” a big part of Malcolm’s seemingly perfect world was his romantic relationship with NYPD detective Dani Powell (Aurora Perrineau), whom in real-life is nothing more than his good friend and colleague.

Coming off that tease of a world where the profiler and detective are very much on the “they will” side of a the show’s will-they-or-won’t-they arc, TheWrap asked the “Prodigal Son” showrunners Chris Fedak and Sam Sklaver to tell us what the future holds for Malcolm and Dani, during a panel at Fox’s Television Critics Association press day Tuesday.

“I don’t know with Bright and Dani,...

‘Prodigal Son’ Welcomes Catherine Zeta-Jones to Its ‘Dark, Dark’ Family Drama — Watch
Image
Not everyone would eagerly hope to be welcomed into a family of killers, but then again, not everyone is Catherine Zeta-Jones.

The Academy Award winning actress joins the cast of “Prodigal Son” during the midseason finale, which airs Tuesday, March 2 on Fox, and Zeta-Jones spoke to reporters early Tuesday afternoon about her love of the part, the series, and its odd little family.

“I was a fan of the show,” Zeta-Jones said during the series’ TCA presentation. “What’s so different and powerful about ‘Prodigal Son’ is that it’s a family drama with a twist of danger. It’s a dark, dark family, and I gravitate toward darker material.”

Zeta-Jones will play Dr. Vivian Capshaw, the resident M.D. at Claremont Psychiatric Hospital where Dr. Marin Whitly (played by Michael Sheen) is currently residing. Dr. Whitly is an incarcerated serial killer known as “The Surgeon,” as well as the...

Prodigal Son's Frank Harts Unpacks the 'Impossible' Decision Weighing on Jt
Image
The Black Lives Matter protests that flooded streets worldwide last summer have made way for one of Prodigal Son‘s most timely storylines — one in which a Black NYPD detective, Jt Tarmel, becomes the target of police brutality from fellow officers.

As evidenced by Tuesday’s episode of the Fox drama, Jt is not yet past the trauma of the incident, which found Jt getting assaulted and choked in the Season 2 premiere by another cop who profiled Jt and assumed him to be a criminal; it wasn’t until Jt’s colleagues intervened, with Dani flashing her police badge, that the violent cop eased up.

Michael Sheen and Tom Payne in Prodigal Son (2019)
(Warning: This post contains spoilers for the Season 2 premiere of “Prodigal Son.”)

Fox’s “Prodigal Son” picked up its tale of twisted family dynamics with the premiere of its second season Tuesday, an episode that revealed what happened in the aftermath of the bloody murder that was committed by Malcolm Bright’s (Tom Payne) sister, Ainsley Whitly (Halston Sage), in front of her brother in the closing moments of the show’s finale last spring.

It turns Ainsley’s crime, stabbing the evil Nicholas Endicott (Dermot Mulroney) seven times, has been covered up by serial-killer expert Bright with the help of the siblings’ serial-killer father, Martin Whitly (Michael Sheen), who walked Bright through the process of cleaning up his sister’s mess over the phone from prison, after Bright sent Ainsley away to protect her from what she had done, which at this point, she doesn’t even seem to remember.

Catherine Zeta-Jones to Star in Second Season of Fox Police Procedural ‘Prodigal Son’
Image
Catherine Zeta-Jones will star as Claremont’s newest psychiatric resident doctor, Dr. Vivian Capshaw, on the forthcoming second season of Fox’s police procedural “Prodigal Son.”

The Academy Award, Tony Award and three-time Screen Actors Guild Award winner will appear regularly in the latter half of the series opposite fellow Welsh native Michael Sheen. When the show’s infamous serial killer Dr. Martin Whitly (Sheen), also known as “The Surgeon,” is assigned to infirmary duty, Zeta-Jones’ Capshaw revels in tasking the charismatic psychopath with tedious, debasing tasks. But as Martin proves his genius to Capshaw, the doctor begins to see his twisted expertise as an asset (which may not necessarily be a good thing).

“An extraordinary talent, Catherine Zeta-Jones is the perfect foil for the brilliant Michael Sheen,” said Michael Thorn, President, Entertainment, Fox Entertainment, in a statement. “I can’t wait to see these two greats go head-to-head in...

Prodigal Son Season 2 Release Date, Cast, Trailer, and Story Details
Image
Prodigal Son proved to be a unique offering in a small screen sea flowing with genre-similar crime procedurals, standing out as a successful freshman offering for Fox after its debut in 2019. While the network was quick to capitalize on that success by giving the series a backorder for more episodes, it stopped short of an advance renewal for Season 2. However, any fears about the network’s apparent indecision proved to be unfounded.

Fox has officially announced its renewal for Prodigal Son Season 2, assuring fans that the crimson-coated cliffhanger on which the inaugural season ended will get to play out onscreen. Moreover, in a move that seems to imply that this renewal was always in the bag, the network also released a proper teaser trailer for the second season of Prodigal Son, featuring new footage about the aftermath of said cliffhanger moment (more on that angle later).

‘Prodigal Son’: Fox Renews Serial Killer Drama For Season 2
Image
Expect more blood after Fox picked up serial killer thriller Prodigal Son for a second season.

The network is likely to air the second season of the series, which stars Michael Sheen and Tom Payne, in midseason, as a result of the Covid-19 production shutdown. The renewal comes after network unveiled its fall schedule last week and the renewal of The Resident and Last Man Standing earlier this week.

Prodigal Son, which was the season’s number two new scripted series after 9-1-1: Lone Star, follows Tom Payne’s Malcolm Bright, son of ‘The Surgeon’, played by Sheen, who as a child was responsible for enabling the police to arrest his father. He has not seen his father in ten years after joining Quantico. Now a profiler, formerly with the FBI, until he was fired, and currently consulting for the New York Police Department, Bright is forced to...

‘Prodigal Son’ Renewed for Season 2 at Fox
Tom Payne
Fox has renewed its Tom Payne- and Michael Sheen-led drama “Prodigal Son” for Season 2 to air during the 2020-2021 season, the network announced Thursday.

Created by Chris Fedak and Sam Sklaver, the psychological thriller follows Malcolm Bright (Payne), a psychologist who has a gift for understanding how serial killers think, because his father, Dr. Martin Whitly (Sheen) was one of the worst, a notorious serial killer called “The Surgeon,” per Fox’s description. Bright is the best criminal psychologist around and murder is the family business. He uses his twisted genius to help the NYPD solve crimes for his longtime mentor, NYPD detective Girl Arroyo (Lou Diamond Phillips), all while dealing with his manipulative mother, Jessica Whitly (Bellamy Young), his seemingly normal sister, Ainsley Whitly (Halston Sage) and a homicidal father still looking to bond with his prodigal son. In the season finale, the events of “the girl...

‘Prodigal Son’ Renewed for Season 2 at Fox

“Prodigal Son” is returning to the Fox fold.

The network hare renewed the Michael Sheen and Tom Payne serial killer drama for a second season. Precisely where “Prodigal Son” will fit into Fox’s 2020-2021 slate remains to be seen, as the network already set a fall schedule anchored by acquisitions like “La’s Finest,” returning unscripted series like “The Masked Singer,” and scripted series which had been held back from last season like “Next” and “Filthy Rich.”

Given the coronavirus production shutdown, sources say season 2 of “Prodigal Son” will most likely appear sometime in midseason.
