Cameron Diaz's return to acting is set to continue with another partnership with Netflix. Once one of Hollywood's most sought-after actresses, Diaz retired on her own terms back in 2014 to focus on her family. She got back into the acting spotlight with the Netflix action comedy, Back in Action, and now she's continuing that union with another endeavor.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Diaz is set to lead the action comedy Bad Day, a film directed by Jake Szymanski from a screenplay by Laura Solon. The movie is said to be a comedic take on the 1993 drama, Falling Down, which starred Michael Douglas and was directed by Joel Schumacher. In that film, Douglas portrayed a man who was taken to his mental limits while trying to make it to his daughter's birthday party. Cameron Diaz’s return to acting in Back in Action was a huge moment that resonated with audiences across the world, and her blockbuster renaissance doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon. Back in Action quickly became Netflix’s 6th biggest movie of all time earlier this year, marking the popular star's return from an unofficial 11-year retirement.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Diaz has reportedly signed on for another action comedy at Netflix from Jury Duty director Jake Szymanski entitled Bad Day. With a screenplay written by Laura Solon, the film centers around a single mother trying to keep her daughter happy after the worst day of her life.
Details of the story have already been compared to Joel Schumacher’s Falling Down, the 1993 comedy starring Michael Douglas and Barbara Hershey. The film will reportedly start shooting in just a few months throughout New York and New Jersey.

After an extended acting hiatus, Cameron Diaz recently returned to the screen with her role alongside Jamie Foxx in the action comedy movie Back in Action. She will be heading back to Netflix for her next feature film role, taking on a character similar to one played by Michael Douglas in 1993.
Per THR, Diaz is set to star in Netflix's Bad Day, an action comedy movie directed by Jake Szymanski. Laura Solon wrote the screenplay and will also executive produce alongside Mark Moran. Beau Bauman, who worked with Diaz on Back in Action, is serving as a producer for Bad Day as well. Solon and Bauman previously collaborated on Office Christmas Party and Let It Snow.
Bad Day follows Diaz as a "single mom fighting to keep one little promise to her daughter on the absolute worst day of her life." The plot is reminiscent of Falling Down, Joel Schumacher's 1993 drama.

Remember that comedy show that had everyone talking last year? You know, the one where James Marsden played himself while some poor, unsuspecting guy thought he was on a real jury? Well, guess what? Jury Duty is officially returning for Season 2, and here’s the kicker—it’s already been filmed!
Yep, you read that right. While we’ve all been wondering if we’d ever see a follow-up to Amazon’s breakout hit, the production team has been secretly working away, wrapping up an entirely new season.

Jury Duty will return for — and has already filmed — a second season at Amazon Prime Video, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed Thursday.
Amazon declined to comment on the news. Season one of the show aired in 2023 on Amazon’s Freevee and endeared audiences with its candid camera comedy starring an unknowing Ronald Gladden. Actors — including James Marsden (playing himself) — improvised along as caricatures of fellow jurors, a judge and other courtroom personalities while Gladden went the whole stint believing the entire ruse was real.
Sources report Jury Duty‘s second season will leave the witness stand behind in favor of a corporate retreat setting. It was shot in the Agoura Hills suburb of Los Angeles.
Season one showrunner Cody Heller previously told THR she was “terrified” by the challenge of pulling off the candid camera feat. “There was something about that fear of failure that ignited something in myself,” she said.

“Jury Duty” will be back for Season 2 sooner than we think.
The Amazon Freevee comedy, which became a surprise hit for the platform and migrated over to Prime Video after the sibling streamer’s shuttering, already produced its next installment, according to media reports.
Amazon representatives declined to comment for the story.
The new season is believed to be set at a corporate retreat instead of a courtroom, according to a report from Variety. Filming took place in Los Angeles and Deadline reported the story will center around a David vs. Goliath theme.
“Jury Duty” was created by Lee Eisenberg, and Gene Stupnitsky. Season 1 followed breakout star Ronald Gladden in a documentary-style journey following his time as a juror, until it is revealed that the proceedings were fake from the start.

“Jury Duty” has been summoned once again.

There might be no better one-line bumper better than “I’ll have what she’s having.” The scene from When Harry Met Sally in question – in which Meg Ryan’s Sally proves that a woman can successfully fake an orgasm, much to Billy Crystal’s Harry’s embarrassment – itself is iconic, but the line stands as a top-tier comedy punchline. Now, Ryan, Crystal and a surprise guest have recreated that scene in a spot to be aired during Super Bowl Lix.
Like the famous scene, the ad is set in Katz’s Delicatessen, with Harry declaring, “I can’t believe they let us back in this place,” referring to the scene Sally made all those years ago. After some disappointment in her lunch (probably because it didn’t take her an hour and a half to order it), Sally adds Hellmann’s mayonnaise and is immediately hit with a sensation. But...

With the Super Bowl around the corner, major companies and films are getting ready for the equivalent of Christmas season for marketing with creative ads. One of them included the lead actors of When Harry Met Sally.
36 years after the release of the romantic comedy, When Harry Met Sally continues to be highly iconic. The two actors, Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal, had amazing chemistry and their banter elevated the comedy, marking one of the most successful friends-to-lovers couples on television. This, alongside the iconic diner scene, is what made Hellmann's choose the two for its Super Bowl ad.

After more than 35 years, When Harry Met Sally co-stars Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal have reunited for lunch at Katz’s Delicatessen. The occasion? A Super Bowl commercial for Hellmann’s mayonnaise, but of course.
Without giving too much away, the duo recreate one of the most famous scenes from their 1989 romantic comedy. The commercial also features a surprise celebrity cameo at the very end.
“They both said they hadn’t been back inside Katz’s since they shot the scene, and so we got to be there for the moment when they both walked on set,” said the commercial’s director Jake Szymanski (via The Hollywood Reporter). “They also hadn’t seen each other in a couple years. So we got to see them walk back into this place, and the memories flood back, and they start remembering and sharing stories and talking about what it was like to film that day.

It looks like Jon Snow knows something after all — namely, what his next role will be. Game of Thrones actor Kit Harington has signed on to star alongside Mark Wahlberg in the sequel to his 2023 action comedy, The Family Plan.
In a new, exclusive report from Deadline, the Apple Original Films sequel is a follow-up to the most-watched film on Apple TV+ since its debut last year. According to Justin Kroll's reporting, the new installment will be a holiday film, and:
Penned by David Coggeshall, The Family Plan sequel takes place at Christmas in Europe where Dan has planned the perfect vacation for the Morgans, but his past continues to haunt them in unexpected ways.
Unfortunately, specific details surrounding Harington's character are being kept under wraps. One can only hope he's playing the main antagonist or villain, as Harington's comedy chops have been — up until this point — mostly under-utilized.

The regrettable moment in "Jury Duty" involved Ronald Gladden and an unexpected party mix-up during episode six. Following a turbulent year marked by dueling industry strikes and the violent contraction–if not yet full pop–of the streaming bubble, 2024 has thus far been pretty good to Hollywood. It certainly helps that we’re in the middle of awards season, which for cineastes amounts to a three-month holiday largely characterized by voluminous binge-watching. And not just binge-watching of the year’s top films. This past spring, social media lit up around a very new kind of American Sweetheart: 30-year-old Ronald Gladden, a solar contractor who believed he was signing up for a documentary on the jury system and instead ended up being the adored lead presence of Amazon Freevee’s fish-out-of-water comedy “Jury Duty.” Gladden answered a Craigslist ad, the producers took a shine to him, and history was made.
“So, I wasn’t part of the Ronald process,” Emmy-nominated casting director Susie Farris told TheWrap. “Ronald is a real person, and I don’t cast reality. [Laughs] But you know, obviously, the crazy part about the show is that every single person except for one is an actor.”
And that’s what made “Jury Duty” one of the year’s most singular TV challenges: casting buoyant, quick-witted, versatile actors that the general public would not recognize to improvise against Gladden as his fellow jurors,...

When the list of potential Emmy nominees was officially released on Thursday, the Amazon Freevee genre-bending comedy “Jury Duty” listed six submissions for Emmy Awards comedy supporting actor and actress: James Marsden, David Brown, Susan Berger, Cassandra Blair, Edy Modica and Rashida Olayiwola. That may not seem particularly significant, but for a series that seemingly against all odds caught hold of the zeitgeist this past spring, it’s massive. The craziest part is that it actually has a chance of pulling in an Emmy nom or two – perhaps even in comedy series and (maybe especially) comedy series casting for its casting director Susie Farris.
In fact, I’m going to go out on a limb here and predict that “Jury Duty” is going to be the Andrea Riseborough of this Emmy season and shock the awards world as a grassroots phenomenon by cracking the best comedy nominee lineup. And it...

Jury Duty‘s back and delivering all of the commentaries you wish you had while watching the first time around on Amazon Freevee. Re-releasing the first season with commentary from the cast, including Ronald Gladden and James Marsden, as well as director Jake Szymanski, this latest version promises just as many laughs along with answers. Already streaming on Amazon Freevee, the new commentary episodes unveil never-before-heard anecdotes about what it took to create the chaotic world in which Ronald thinks he’s making a documentary about serving on a jury but is, in fact, the hero of a story filled with actors pretending to be everyday people, including Marsden who portrays a fictional version of himself. In an exclusive Q&a below, executive producer Nicholas Hatton offers up some fun Easter Eggs and explains the release of the commentary episodes and much more. In the final episode of Jury Duty, the cast and crew take the time to walk unknowing hero Ronald Gladden through the production behind everything he just experienced. He’s still in disbelief even as the hidden cameras and fake sets are revealed and actors share their real names, unable to take it all in. But it’s now been more than a year since the series was filmed, and Gladden is back to reflect and reveal even more behind-the-scenes secrets alongside director Jake Szymanski and stars James Marsden, Mekki Leeper (Noah), Cassandra Blair (Vanessa), and Maria Russell (Inez) for Jury Duty Exclusive Cast Commentary episodes.

“Jury Duty” has no business working as well as it does, and Jake Szymanski, who directed all eight episodes, knows it. “It just sounded like a crazy, almost impossible idea, which is what I’m attracted to,” he tells Gold Derby. “It sounded tough. It sounded like a mental puzzle on how to pull it off.”
The Amazon Freevee comedy follows Ronald Gladden, a solar panel contractor who believes he’s participating in a documentary as he serves jury duty. In reality, he had no idea he was on a scripted TV show and that everything in his life for three weeks was fake and heavily planned — from the case and the sequestration to the 11 actors as his fellow jurors (and James Marsden as an entitled version of James Marsden) and that dinner at Margaritaville.

The sleeper Amazon Freevee genre-bending docu-comedy hit “Jury Duty” announced today that it’s releasing the eight-part series in a cast commentary edition for streaming beginning Thursday. The revised installments will include secrets from the jury box as told by director Jake Szymanski, hero Ronald Gladden, and some of the jurors themselves including actors James Marsden, Mekki Leeper, Cassandra Blair and Maria Russell. It promises to feature never-before-heard anecdotes about what it took to create the meticulously-planned series both inside the courtroom and out. New testimony will reveal exactly what Gladden was thinking in every unpredictable moment.

Casting director Susie Farris got the unique opportunity to participate in the meticulous process of jury selection, choosing all but one of 12 jurors — but it was for an entirely made-up court case.
Even with over two decades of casting experience and credits in “Elf,” “Wet Hot American Summer,” “Speechless” and “Mr. Robot,” she had never been met with a task quite like casting Amazon Freevee’s viral series “Jury Duty,” a hidden-camera, “Truman Show”-esque comedy.
In the weeks after its release, “Jury Duty” has been applauded for its outstanding cast of actors, improv comedians and one Ronald Gladden, the lone, non-actor who believed the entire, absurd court case was real.
Farris spoke with Variety to share her process behind selecting television’s favorite petit jury.
Most casting directors don’t work with improv actors, so what was it like for you? Had you ever done anything like this before?...

Ronald Gladden thought he was just doing his civic duty, with a few cameras following along. Like all the other participants in the documentary-style comedy series "Jury Duty," which premiered on Amazon Freevee on April 7, Gladden plays himself in the show - but unlike the others, who are all actors, Gladden actually thought he was participating in a documentary about a real trial.
"Jury Duty," though, is most definitely not about a real trial. Co-created by "The Office"'s Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, the show stars James Marsden, a group of actors, and the unsuspecting Gladden as jurors in a three-week Los Angeles trial. Out of the 12 jurors, Gladden is the only one who isn't aware that he's in a carefully plotted comedy series.

Yes, Jake Szymanski has directed episodes of Saturday Night Live, and yes, he has an improv background. But even those experiences didn’t fully prepare him to direct Jury Duty. Nothing could.
Amazon Freevee’s comedy, which follows a regular guy who doesn’t realize he’s part of a fake jury trial, might have its roots in hoax shows like Candid Camera and Punk’d, but its scope is even more audacious. For three weeks of filming, Ronald Gladden, the juror who was hoaxed, was fully immersed in the show. He was sequestered with fake jurors, and he even surrendered his phone so that he couldn’t contact the outside world. That meant the creative team had to build a full-time fictional environment. Szymanski wasn’t just directing a few scenes. He was directing Ronald’s entire life.

There’s an inherent danger in nostalgia. As we’ve witnessed over the past four years, slogans about some mythical better time in America can come loaded with prejudice. Those good ol’ days weren’t all that great for everyone.

Hulu has released the trailer for John Bronco. Walton Goggins stars as John Bronco, the greatest pitchman to ever live. The mockumentary is all set to premiere October 15th, exclusively on Hulu. The trailer has Goggins cranked up to eleven as a Burt Reynolds mixed with a used car salesman-type of character as he goes around racing cars, riding horses, and creating products with his face on them.
Some have said that if you were famous before the internet, you might as well never have existed. Such is the case for John Bronco, the greatest pitchman who ever lived. In 1966, Ford tapped him to race their new prototype SUV at the Baja 500 in Mexico. Not only did he win, but he gave a rousing speech that rallied a nation. Legend has it that Ford named the new car "Bronco" after John, made him the face of their campaign and skyrocketed him to stardom.

Believe it or not, the 2016 comedy film, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, is based on a true story. In terms of true story films, Mike and Dave doesn't quite rank alongside films like Munich or Dog Day Afternoon, but it's also not trying to be. It's just a fun comedy starring Zac Efron, Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza, and Adam DeVine.

It also happens to be one of the premiere wedding comedies of the past five years. If this Jake Szymanski film worked for certain audiences, then they'd definitely appreciate these films, too.

Santa Fe author Forrest Fenn, known for his 2010 book Thrill of the Chase which inspired a popular treasure hunt in the Rocky Mountains, died on Monday. He was 90.
Fenn died of natural causes in his Santa Fe home.
The writer and former U.S. Air Force pilot rose to notoriety after a poem in his memoir The Thrill of the Chase hinted at the location of a hidden cache of about $2 million in jewels and gold. His poem not only inspired treasure hunters to embark on their treacherous quest for his treasure but encouraged them to document their own experiences on the hunt.
Earlier this year the popular hunt made headlines as a Colorado woman, whose husband died searching for Fenn’s secret treasure, claimed that the Santa Fe writer never hid anything. Who is John Bronco? He’s a world class racer, a rodeo star, a sex symbol and a legendary pitchman who’s face was instantly recognizable on the Ford Bronco and countless products — and he’s also Walton Goggins and never existed.
But that shouldn’t stop anyone from inflating his legend, as the new short film “John Bronco” aims to do. The mockumentary is the latest from Jake Szymanski, the director who told similarly fake sports legends in the films “Tour de Pharmacy” and “7 Days in Hell.”
“John Bronco” though is a different sort of fake sports icon, a 1966 legend whose jingle went triple-platinum and could be heard in ads for his own cologne, breakfast cereal, video game, action figure and more. The film describes him as the “very embodiment of the American dream, that is, until it all came crashing down.”

Studio 8 has hired Jake Szymanski to direct an action comedy based on journalist Hudson Morgan’s misadventures in search of buried treasure in the Rocky Mountains.
In 2010, Forrest Fenn, an art dealer in New Mexico, announced he had buried a cache of gold and jewels in the Rocky Mountains — setting off a treasure hunt that attracted thousands. Last month, Fenn announced that a man who wished to remain anonymous had discovered the chest.
Morgan, a journalist turned comedy writer, will write the screenplay roughly based on his own experience in which a group of millennials set out after the treasure after their best friend disappears. That led to shouting matches, natural hazards, close calls with grizzlies, leaving the group with new appreciation for life, friendship and bear spray.
Studio 8’s Jeff Robinov, Guy Danella and John Graham will produce the film. The project is described as “The Goonies” meets “The Hangover.
