2025 is halfway over, and for the most part, films this year have been massively disappointing, including the supposedly final Mission: Impossible film and most of the Netflix original films that came out this year. While it is true that most Netflix original films that were released this year are not that good, there were also some extremely entertaining films, from Tom Hardy‘s gritty action thriller film Havoc to Vince Vaughn‘s touching comedy film Nonnas. So, we decided to compile a list of the best Netflix original films that came out in 2025.

Exterritorial is a German action thriller film written and directed by Christian Zübert. The 2025 film follows Sara Wulf, a former Special Forces soldier visiting the US Consulate in Germany with her son, but when he suddenly goes missing, she does everything she can to find him.

Gareth Evans’ Havoc premiered on Netflix last month—and it appears to have earned a fan in none other than Quentin Tarantino.
From the talk backs in the Video Archives podcast, “Q.T.,” who is believed to be Tarantino, said, “Who has seen the Netflix movie Chaos directed the the guy who did The Raid? It’s pretty f***ing bad-ass.” Commenters reminded him that the film is called Havoc, but the sentiment still stands.
Havoc soared to the top of Netflix’s streaming charts upon release, racking up 29.8 million views. That impressive debut outpaced several higher-profile films—including The Electric State, the Russo brothers’ star-studded sci-fi adventure featuring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt.
Related Havoc tops Netflix’s streaming charts with a better debut than The Electric State
Tom Hardy stars in Havoc as Walker, a “bruised detective fighting his way through the criminal underworld threatening to engulf his entire city.

Exactly 12 years after winning the Caméra d’Or at Cannes with his debut feature “Ilo Ilo,” Singaporean filmmaker Anthony Chen has begun production on “We Are All Strangers,” the third and final film in his acclaimed “Growing Up” trilogy.
The project reunites Chen with actors Yeo Yann Yann and Koh Jia Ler, who starred in both previous installments of the trilogy, 2013’s “Ilo Ilo” and 2019’s “Wet Season.” Set in contemporary Singapore and spanning two and a half years, the film is Chen’s most ambitious work yet – an epic story capturing intimate moments of love, life, and coming of age in the city-state.
“I filmed Jia Ler at 11 and then again at 17, so it felt like a natural step to capture him approaching adulthood,” Chen said of his continuing collaboration with the young actor.

Once in a while, a non-English language comes to Netflix that blows the viewers’ minds, and fans have found the movie of the season. German language movie Exterritorial has dethroned Tom Hardy’s action-packed feature Havoc in its second week. Exterritorial is an action feature, starring Jeanne Goursaud as a mother and former soldier whose son vanished inside a US consulate, and she does everything to find him. The movie has been at the top spot in 74 countries. In contrast, Hardy’s Havoc, another long-awaited action flick, enjoyed the top spot for a week and is now on #2.
The film, directed and written by Christian Zübert, follows a former Special Forces soldier, Sara (Goursaud), who is turning a new leaf as she heads to the US Consulate General in Frankfurt to obtain a work visa. She and her son, Josh (Rickson Guy da Silva), are planning a move to America...

Netflix debuted the new action thriller Havoc last Friday. And the film has already established itself as the most-watched title on the platform in the days since. Judging from the marketing materials, Havoc looks like a gritty actioner that throws back to the exploitation output of yesteryear. Critics are already drawing comparisons to early John Woo, with many praising the fight choreography and dynamic action sequences.
Havoc writer/director Gareth Evans came onto our collective radar with the scrappy action picture The Raid: Redemption and from there he went on to write and co-direct the V/H/S/2 segment ‘Safe Haven.’
Evans is quickly making a name for himself in the genre space. On many of his projects, he takes a producing credit, a writing credit, and a directing credit. Having a role in multiple steps of the filmmaking process is a good way to maintain a higher level of creative control.

An amazing and very eclectic range of content was on the lists of the top five most-viewed movies and shows on Netflix last week. There is certainly plenty of variety around and some new entries too, as Tudum reveals the latest viewing figures. Stand by to find out what has been on lots of people's screens recently.
The movies has a top new action thriller bursting on the scene. Be warned, though, it’s bloody and violent. To balance that out on the list, there is a classic animated character movie, you’ll find it hard to resist laughing along too. Rom-coms are pulling in the numbers, too. No matter what the critics think, the genre is always popular with viewers.

Havoc has been in development for quite a while, and it finally dropped on Netflix recently. But did this Tom Hardy-led, Gareth Evans-directed film, which went through multiple reshoots, actually live up to the hype? According to Popcorn Meter, the audience rating system scored just 38%, so… not really. Funny thing is that it somehow got a much better score on the Tomatometer, 64%! How does that happen? Aren’t critics supposed to be the tougher crowd to impress? Let’s dig into this weird little twist in the rest of the article.
Why the Plot Fails to Connect?
The film runs on a pretty familiar setup; we’ve seen this kind of storyline countless times. The lead character is your typical saviour figure, but the problem is, the story doesn’t give us much reason to actually care about him, or anyone else,...

Tom Hardy is having a great year. After wrapping up the Venom trilogy in 2024, the actor had two projects that headed straight to streaming and both experienced exciting success on different platforms.
The most recent release is Netflix's action thriller Havoc, which follows the successful Paramount+ series MobLand. Gareth Evans of The Raid fame wrote and directed Havoc, which starred Hardy, Timothy Olyphant, and Forest Whitaker in the main roles. Although the movie opened to mixed reviews from the critics and even worse ratings from the audience,Havoc undeniably became a major hit on Netflix, topping the charts in its first week, per Tudum.
Havoc premiered on Netflix on Apr. 25, and had only two days to make an impact before the streamer stopped the clocks. That makes its viewership even more impressive because, for the week between Apr. 21 and 27, Havoc received 29.8 million views, and 53.1 million hours viewed.

Gareth Evans’ Havoc has been a long time coming, but the wait has been well worth it. The hard-hitting action thriller has topped Netflix’s streaming charts with 29.8 million views. This makes the film the most-watched title of the week, but it has also beaten some of Netflix’s more high-profile recent releases, including The Electric State.
The Electric State was a highly anticipated sci-fi adventure movie from the Russo brothers starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt. With a budget of $320 million, it was also one of the most expensive movies ever made. However, although the film debuted at Netflix’s #1 spot, it did so with just 25.2 million views. As Havoc was produced for a fraction of the budget of The Electric State, it’s certainly a lot more bang for the buck. Other recent action flicks also performed better in their debuts, including Carry On with 42 million views...

After waiting four, long years, action movie fans had reason to celebrate this weekend as the Tom Hardy-led Netflix thriller, Havoc, was released at last. However, while many have quickly found themselves wonderfully wrapped up in Hardy and The Raid director Gareth Evans’ bullet-ridden tale of a bruised detective forced to battle his way into the criminal underworld, there is one thing that stood out to many viewers. And it’s been met with a mixed response...
Oscar-nominee Tom Hardy has become known for his hardman persona and intensity on-screen. But there’s something else he’s become somewhat infamous for too: accents. Whether it be mumbling through Mad Max: Fury Road and The Revenant, delivering something highly unexpected vocally with Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, or providing two very different voices as Eddie Brock and Venom in the Marvel franchise, Hardy loves to do a voice. Havoc is no different,...

Eight years after his last feature, Director Gareth Evans has returned to his favorite crime action genre with Netflix’s Havoc, a no-nonsense kill-or-be-killed venture that fires on all cylinders to deliver a memorable, bone-crushing, blood-splattering action spectacle. Aside from that, what makes Havoc really special amidst the director’s filmography is that there is a distinct pulp-noir style quotient evoked by the visuals, with all the elements of grunge, smoke, and darkness capturing the essence of corruption, a kind of world-building usually seen when characters like Batman or the Shadow are involved. The characterization, much like the plot details, is very simplistic—in most cases not that much developed, but it is enough to provide justification to the maddening violence and bloodshed, which makes viewers forget about any possible drawbacks anyway. There is some solid star power in the ensemble cast of Havoc, a discussion of which can’t...

Following the culmination of his Venom trilogy, Tom Hardy entered a very eventful 2025: the release of his gangster series, MobLand, and the recently released Netflix action film, Havoc. The latter has been in development for a long time, with several reshoots, but it still wasn't enough to convince the audience.
Havoc premiered on Netflix on Apr. 25. The action film, with Gareth Evans at the helm, debuted with a disappointing score of 61% on Rotten Tomatoes from the critics, which was barely enough for a "fresh" score. However, as more reviews came in,Havoc's critics' score slightly improved to 66%, but as the audience started reviewing it, they were less and less impressed, as Hardy's new film has an unfortunate 49% approval from the audience.

The director of The Raid movies has come up with another action thriller, this time on Netflix. Tom Hardy’s Havoc is an out-and-out action thriller from Gareth Evans, with bullets flying all over the place. For the fans of such high-octane thrillers, Havoc is super exciting to watch. However, if you’re someone who’ll nit-pick every detail in a movie, you might be disappointed at some of the scenes.
While Evans knew that he would disappoint such moviegoers, he still proceeded to exaggerate the number of bullets flying. However, if you really need an explanation, Evans has a logic behind those scenes. The director couldn’t help but include those gunfight scenes, which are a clear influence of Hong Kong films and filmmakers like Johnnie To, John Woo, and Ringo Lam.

“Havoc” isn’t technically Gareth Evans’s follow-up to his duology of Indonesian action-thrillers that immediately propelled him into the upper echelon of modern combat cinema, but his latest film is undoubtedly far more aligned with the “Raid” series—thematically, tonally, spiritually—than it is with the period horror film that came in the interim. One thing that did carry over from the quickly disposed “Apostle,” however, is the Netflix logo that comes at the start.
In an ideal world, the viscerally relentless blood-splatter that Evans helped introduce to the West by way of pencak silat would have been exactly the sort of grizzled, unpolished style of action cinema that would go on to influence all other similar films across the decade, from the big screen to the Netflix queue; in a tragic twist, it seems as though the inverse has come to pass, as most films have more readily...

It sure feels like an eternity waiting for Havoc to arrive on Netflix after the movie originally wrapped filming in 2021. Besides, this is the long-awaited return for Gareth Evans in the action-movie territory – his first since The Raid 2, one of the best action thrillers ever made over the last decade. Post-The Raid 2, he served as a co-showrunner alongside frequent cinematographer Matt Flannery in TV’s Gangs of London and directed his first Netflix film in the violent folk horror Apostle.
Now, with Havoc, Evans shows the world how it is done when comes to executing bruising action set pieces in both gunfights and hand-to-hand combats. Some may find Evans’ penchant for excessive violence overly exploitative and unbearable to watch. And yet, it’s hard to deny he has a knack for bringing his trademark action mayhem with a heightened sense of tactility. Every punch, kick and bullet...

Tom Hardy stars in “Havoc,” a highly anticipated, hyper-violent thriller from Netflix. The film bears the unmistakable mark of Gareth Evans, a filmmaker known for his visceral style and violent storytelling. “Havoc” certainly delivers on this front, offering an almost over-the-top choreography of violence in a story that moves relentlessly from one violent sequence to an even more violent one.
“Havoc” is all about atmosphere, pacing, noir aesthetics, and street violence. Its setting and style evoke memories of Sin City (2005), featuring characters seemingly driven by the film’s own aesthetic. Written and directed by Gareth Evans, the movie fully embraces his signature style: violence, atmosphere, and characters who exist primarily to fulfill their roles within the narrative.
That said, if you enjoy violent thrillers, it’s quite a spectacle.

There’s a vitalness to Gareth Evans’ filmmaking that is yet to lose momentum. First felt in 2011’s The Raid, when the film’s compact premise allowed for dizzyingly kinetic fight sequences that all but pinned you to your seat, the writer-director has continued to mine his boundless knowledge of the heroic bloodshed genre in order to fuse frenzied violence with themes of morality.
Havoc is an extension of his small yet combustible oeuvre. Set over the Christmas period, we find Tom Hardy’s Walker in the dim aisles of a convenience store, trying to scrape together a passable last-minute present for his six-year-old daughter. The actor is a master at playing wounded, war-beaten outliers and wears the role comfortably. Through flashback, we find Walker embroiled in a shady drug operation gone awry. At first, “Havoc” sounds like just another one of those generic, one-word titles Hollywood slaps on action movies to convey a terse, efficient shoot-’em-up. Why give such projects a long-winded name like “A Clear and Present Danger” or “Every Which Way but Loose” when you can find something punchy like “Taken,” “Crank” or “Drive”? Look it up in the dictionary, however, and “havoc” doesn’t simply mean “devastation” (of which there is plenty in “The Raid” director Gareth Evans’ excessively violent Netflix outing), but also some mix of confusion, mayhem and all-around disorder (which spoils whatever fun a couple over-the-top set-pieces deliver).

Gareth Evans’s Havoc has a setup as elementally simple as the filmmaker’s 2011 breakout The Raid: Redemption and its 2014 sequel: A grizzled detective, Walker (Tom Hardy), fights his way through a gang war in a city plagued by urban rot, along the way uncovering that the highest echelons of society have ties to the drug-peddling underworld. Along the way, he puts down one gangster after another in violent fashion.
It’s established immediately that Walker is a capable but crooked detective whose history of taking dirty money puts him at the mercy of higher-ups. One such figure, Lawrence Beaumont (Forest Whitaker), comes to Walker when word gets out that the politician’s son, Charlie (Justin Cornwell), is the chief suspect in a drug robbery gone bad and on the run from both police and cartel soldiers. “Don’t forget,” Beaumont growls, “I know what you did,” threatening to expose...

After waiting patiently for four years, Tom Hardy is all set to wreak Havoc on Netflix this Friday. While we await the arrival of the highly anticipated action thriller, which sees Hardy join forces with The Raid director Gareth Evans, the first reactions to Havoc have now emerged. And, mercifully, it sounds like the wait will have been well worth it.
We begin with critic Zachary Lee, who heaps praise on the combined efforts of Hardy and Evans, declaring Havoc “muscular filmmaking at its finest” and highlighting one action scene in particular.
#Havoc: Gareth Evans & Tom Hardy show that we’ve only nicked the surface when it comes to depicting on-screen death. Muscular filmmaking at its finest, it’s relentlessly bleak but there’s a twisted catharsis in seeing how it crescendos in brutality. Best night club fight in ages.

Rama’s Screen had a very positive reaction, saying, “Havoc was one of the craziest films I’ve seen this year. A relentless chaotic firepowered thrill ride. And Tom Hardy’s action endurance impressed the hell out of me. The shootouts & the ultra violence had no qualms about reaching the point of overkill. Absolutely insane! #Havoc”

If your movie’s called Havoc, you need to cause some havoc. And who better to bust skulls, blow brains, and hit hard than the combination of director Gareth Evans, and star Tom Hardy? Evans has serious form in wince-worthy action as the filmmaker behind The Raid and The Raid 2, this time swapping martial artistry for the burly physicality of Hardy – as a cop on a mission who’s about to have a seriously bad couple of days.
Evans’ long-awaited return to action cinema is just weeks away – and with the new trailer bringing fresh “oof!”s aplenty, Empire hopped on the blower with him to get a taste of the mayhem. Sorry, the havoc.

Have you ever wondered if Gareth Evans dreams of puppies and rainbows? If so, the official trailer for the filmmaker’s latest, Havoc, is here to put that question to rest. The film stars Tom Hardy as an, of course, bruised detective fighting his way through an underworld of shady types. Sound familiar? Well, given that Evan’s awesome breakout film The Raid: Redemption is considered to have significantly influenced the John Wick series, it’s difficult not to glean from Havoc’s trailer that the film is some kind of reverse pat on the back.
According to Netflix’s official synopsis accompanying the trailer, the film finds Hardy’s Walker, following a drug deal gone wrong, “with a number of factions on his tail; a vengeful crime syndicate, a crooked politician, as well as his fellow cops. And it certainly sounds like it could boast not just one of Hardy’s best performances, but Havoc has the potential to be one of the best action movies of all time, with Evans promising that the actor is in “f*cking beast mode.”
Speaking with Empire, who have also revealed a new image from Havoc which you can check out below, Evans teased how Havoc will differ from his previous action masterpieces The Raid and The Raid 2. Gareth Evans’ Havoc has been a long time coming, but the gritty action flick is finally set to be released next month on Netflix. As a massive fan of The Raid and The Raid 2, I’m hugely excited to see what Evans has up his sleeve this time. “It was never going to be a martial-arts film,” Evans explained. “I wanted this to feel like the gunplay stuff that I love watching… Tom came to us in f***ing beast mode. I tapped him on the shoulder and it was just like granite. He came fully physically prepared.“
