Vying for the Berlinale Panorama’s prestigious audience award, Eva Libertad’s “Deaf” (“Sorda”) sheds light on the world of deaf women and how motherhood shapes their relationships.
Picked up by Latido Films in December, Libertad’s debut feature is an expansion of the eponymous Goya-nominated short she co-directed with Nuria Muñoz, starring her sister Miriam Garlo, an acclaimed deaf actress. In an interview with Variety, Libertad details how “Deaf” was a lifetime in the making:
“‘Deaf’ was born from the moment when my sister was considering becoming a mother. At that time, she shared her fears as a deaf woman with me, and I realized that I had never thought about it before: the concerns of a deaf woman who wants to be a mother in a hearing world.”

Love at First Kiss (Eres Tú) is a romantic comedy directed by Alauda Ruiz de Azúa starring Álvaro Cervantes and Silvia Alonso.
Love at First Kiss is a romantic comedy with all the flaws and virtues of the genre and all its familiar, tender and charmingly repetitive stereotypes.
This time it has all the humor of literature and its jokes about writers with self-destructive tendencies who are somewhat alcoholic and that, back to the stereotypes, we find very funny.
May you enjoy it in all its predefined charm.
Movie Review Love at First Kiss
Charming, tender, romantic and funny, what is a romantic comedy with its virtues is very easy to see, and its flaws are forgotten as soon as it ends.
An entertaining joke-dispensing machine about couples and sentimental relationships that, coincidentally and due to the genre’s craft and humour, ends with that magic of giving hope to human beings who,...

Netflix’s Spanish Civil War zombie movie Valley of the Dead (Malnazidos) is an entertaining stumble through familiar undead territory, courtesy of co-directors Javier Ruiz Caldera and Alberto de Toro. As such, it won’t surprise anyone who’s seen a zombie movie before, but it pushes all the right buttons, thanks to genre-savvy direction, likeable performances and a snappy script.
Valley of the Dead begins in 1938, in the middle of the Spanish Civil War, which has bitterly divided the losing Republican side and the Nazi-assisted Franco-led Nationalist side. In a chilling opening sequence, Nazi soldiers murder a wedding party and then spray the corpses with a blue gas, under the watchful eye of their Commandant (Francisco Reyes).

Spanish director Alauda Ruiz de Azúa, who swept the board at March’s Málaga Film Festival, has wrapped shooting on her sophomore feature, “Eres Tú,” a Netflix’ romantic comedy produced by Antonio Asensio and Paloma Molina at Zeta Studios – the Madrid-based company behind phenomenon “Elite.” Miriam Rodríguez executive produces.
After distributing Almodovar and signing up J.A. Bayona for real-life disaster drama “Society of the Snow,” Ruiz de Azúa’s attachment to “Eres tú” marks another association with a prestige director by Netflix in Spain.
Netflix Spain already accounts for three of the five most watched non-English Netflix movies ever: “The Platform,” “Below Zero” and “Through My Window.” It is, however, progressively diversifying its slate of series, movies, documentaries and TV shows by incorporating different creators profiles to create potential crowd-pleasers.
“Eres tú” follows Javier who, when 16 and kissing a girl for the first time, discovers that he had a gift of romantic clairvoyance.

Where can Netflix Spain go after hit show “Money Heist”? On Thursday, it unveiled seven new Spanish originals, including “Feria” from “Elite” creator Carlos Montero, that sketch some kind of answer and roadmap for the U.S. streaming giant in one of its European production powerhouses.
Though Netflix in Spain has seen its biggest global hits in two iconic young adult series, “Money Heist” and “Elite,” now, more than ever before, as it transforms into a general entertainment service, the U.S. streaming giant is mixing it up.
The seven new originals, set for release from 2021, run a gamut from Netflix’s first short format series to its most ambitious doc series ever, “800 Meters,” to two features, a standup special and just one drama series.

As expected, Pilar Palomero’s remarkable first work picked up the Golden Biznaga for Best Spanish Film at the 23rd edition of the film festival. Schoolgirls will arrive at cinemas across Spain on Friday, 4 September. As for the Latin American category, the distinction (and the same amount) went to Mexico, country of origin of Summer White (Blanco de verano), filmed by Rodrigo Ruíz Patterson. Movies New to Netflix in February: ‘Velvet Buzzsaw’ & ‘High Flying Bird’ Premiere, Plus Every ‘Jaws’
Netflix is having a very good start to 2019. In addition to landing its first Best Picture nomination for Alfonso Cuarón’s “Roma,” (the film tied with “The Favourite” for most nominations — 10), the streaming service took another step towards industry legitimacy by officially joining the MPAA this week. The site’s original film slate continues to broaden and diversify, and the streamer seems to pull an infinite number of rabbits out of its expertly-branded red hat.
As the Sundance Film Festival kicks off this week, the Jake Gyllenhaal vehicle “Velvet Buzzsaw” will play in the Premieres section. But Netflix viewers won’t be missing out for too long; the art heist genre thriller debuts on Netflix on the first day of February. That might make a nice double feature with the Kristen Stewart-starring “Personal Shopper,” or Matt Tyrnauer’s impeccably made disco doc “Studio 54.”

Madrid — In an alliance which links three of the potential key players in Spain’s new TV scene, broadcast network Mediaset España and Warner Bros. International TV Production España will produce, with the participation of Netflix, primetime cop thriller “Brigada Costa del Sol.”
Starring Hugo Silva, and set in southern Spain, over 1977-82, “Brigada Costa del Sol” will screen first on Mediaset España’s main Telecinco channel, and then globally on Netflix in a first window and second window for Spain.
Inspired by the history of one of Spain’s first anti-narcotics squads, the Grupo Especial de Estupefacientes Costa del Sol, the thriller, set in Torremolinos, narrates the humble origins but huge success of the operation. Shooting from June 7 on location in Malaga and its environs, the series will mix police procedural with drama, romance and the protagonist’s voice over, given his own “subjective and cynical viewpoint” counterpointing the...

The Sex of the Angels
Written by Ana Maroto
Directed by Xavier Villaverde
Spain/Brazil, 2012
The Sex of the Angels concerns Bruno (Llorenç González) and Carla (Astrid Bergès-Frisbey), an attractive young couple whose relationship is changed by the introduction of street dancer/martial artist Rai (Álvaro Cervantes) into their lives. Sparks begin to fly between the two men, and they secretly begin a passionate, open relationship on the side. When Carla finally discovers, she is understandably upset, especially since Bruno apparently finds a unique freedom with the less monogamous nature of his Rai relations. After some soul searching, Carla decides she still loves Bruno and wishes to encourage his happiness, which eventually involves befriending and falling for Rai herself.
One commendation to throw the film’s way is that in its depiction of the complicated situation, it never reproaches bisexuality or depicts it in a sleazy manner as many filmmakers...
