5 Malayalam Serial Killer Thrillers You Can’t Miss – From Maranamass To Chinthamani Kolacase(Photo Credit –Facebook/Jio Hotstar)

Malayalam films have always explored human psychology, and beyond that, these films often intertwine strong emotions, even comedies frequently carry deep emotional undertones and dramatic elements. So, it’s no surprise that Malayalam cinema has also delved into the subject of serial killers, with varying degrees of success. Mainly, Mollywood’s serial killer films have typically been revenge thrillers involving multiple victims, rather than depictions of mindless violence with no connection between the victims. Perhaps this is done to rationalize the violence, making it easier for audiences to accept it as somewhat realistic. In fact, only one Malayalam film on this list can be considered an actual serial killer film — the other four are revenge thrillers disguised as serial killer stories.

Bougainvillea (2024) Movie Review: Impeccable Attention to Detail Elevates a Weak, Predictable Story
Amal Neerad
On the heels of a banner year for Malayalam cinema, it should be no surprise that Amal Neerad would be making his claim for year-end lists one to remember. Written alongside author Lajo Jose and inspired by Jose’s own novels, Bougainvillea treads both new and familiar ground with world-class talent on display at every level. The meticulous writing combined with Neerad’s own well-known filmmaking acumen guides a story that in another’s hands could have drowned in the undertow of its tropes. Jyothirmayi, making her comeback to cinema after 11 years, puts on the performance of a lifetime as a woman named Reethu who experiences memory issues and altered cognizance of reality after an accident.

Her doting husband, played with razor finesse by Kunchacho Boban, attempts to balance his job as a family doctor with the needs of her and their two children, while clearly exhibiting signs of burnout himself.

Producer Slams Actor for Lack of Promotion
Image
The producer of the Malayalam film Padmini, Suvin K. Varkey, has taken to social media to slam lead actor Kunchacko Boban for his lack of cooperation in promoting the film.

In a series of tweets, Varkey accused Boban of taking home 2.5 crores for his role in the film, but refusing to participate in any promotional activities. Varkey said that the entire promotion plan for the film was rejected by Boban’s wife, who had appointed a marketing consultant to review the film. The consultant reportedly made a verdict after watching the raw footage of the film, and decided that it was not worth promoting.

Ariyippu to Nna Thaan Case Kodu: Our pick of 2022’s best Malayalam films
Image
MollywoodMalayalam cinema showcased some great films and exceptional performances this year. Here is Tnm’s pick of the best Malayalam movies of 2022.CrisYear 2022 was in some ways a comeback year for new films, which could once again be released in theatres after the rules of physical distancing brought in by the Covid-19 pandemic faded away. The piled-up movies of previous years were released one by one, and new ones were made. Original stories were told and actors took on unconventional roles. Here is Tnm’s pick of the best Malayalam movies of the year. Bhoothakaalam -- Bhoothakaalam was not a typical horror film although it could send shivers down your spine for several long minutes. But at its centre is the theme of a mother-son relationship going through a rough patch. The horrors of the house in fact appear to help bring them together. Revathy, after a long time, had...

Malayalam actor Sharaf U Dheen’s choice of roles shows he’s unafraid to dabble in grey
Image
MollywoodIn a career spanning a decade and 30 films, except for ‘Priyan Ottathilanu’, actor Sharaf U Dheen has mostly fallen back on interesting sub-characters that explored his relatability factor.Neelima MenonSharaf U Dheen as Roy in AarkkariyamSatheeshan, like the rest of the villagers, is wary of the new stranger in town. But he watches him from a distance, discreetly sizing him up and even attacking him upfront once. Satheeshan is the quasi-narrator in Rorschach (2022), the one who objectively tries to make sense of Luke Antony’s (Mammootty) motives. Actor Sharaf U Dheen blends so seamlessly into the milieu that he could very well be any random villager who passes your home after a day’s work. There is a sloppiness he brings to Satheeshan that doesn’t seem deliberate. Look at the ease with which he carries his tool bag while manoeuvring around. His complex liaison with the two women is also interestingly staged.

Mammootty’s character shifts from one side to the other as he acts out the sequence from Gauravam, a Tamil legal drama which had Tamil actor Sivaji in a dual role as a barrister, and his nephew, an amateur lawyer, both of whom fight the same case. In conversation with Sn Swamy, man behind Malayalam cinema’s finest murder mysteries
Image
InterviewTNM caught up with Cbi series writer Sn Swamy for a chat, as the fifth edition of the movie, titled ‘Cbi 5: The Brain’, gets ready for release on May 1.Neelima MenonFacebookWhen Sn Swamy was planning to write a police story, it was Mammootty who felt that another cop might struggle to outshine the brilliance of the fiery inspector Balram in Avanazhi and suggested propelling a Cbi officer at the thick of things. And when Swamy had a name like Ali Imran in mind, it was Mammootty who suggested that the character be a Tamil Brahmin. Thus was born one of the most fascinating fictional characters in Malayalam cinema – Sethurama Iyer, the disarmingly calm Cbi officer who never raises his voice and thinks on his feet. Oru Cbi Diary Kurippu, which came in 1988, was the highest grosser in Malayalam that year and ran for a full year in Tamil Nadu.

Bheeshma Parvam review: Mammootty is terrific in a wholly entertaining mass film
Image
ReviewIs it glorifying violence? 100%. What part of the story is original? 0%. But the whole thing is staged in such an entertaining way that I was simply having a good time with my popcorn. Sowmya RajendranBheeshma ParvamYet another tribute to The Godfather. Don’t we have enough of those already? If you’d asked me this question before I stepped in to watch Bheeshma Parvam, I would have said yes. Stop with the gangster storylines, the unnecessary glorification of violence, and the celebration of toxic masculinity already. But having watched the film, I have to confess that I’m grinning ear-to-ear, and would completely enjoy a sequel if it was ever made. Directed by Amal Neerad, known for his extravagant slow motion shots and stylised violence, Bheeshma Parvam also takes generous inspiration from the Mahabharata. Mammootty plays Michael (a direct nod to The Godfather), the youngest son of a powerful gangster...

Film Review: Trance (2020) by Anwar Rasheed
Image
Fahadh Faasil has carved his own niche in the Indian cinema. While primarily working in Malayalam-language films, he has become so prominent with the grounded performances, that he has an ardent fanbase, not witnessing a larger-than-life figure but to get a deeply humane experience. Anwar Rasheed’s ‘Trance’ largely depends on Fahadh’s bravura performance. It is rare to find a performance so arresting that it becomes the pulse of the film, almost making the actor seem like the auteur and the driving force behind it. This particular performance is not his finest and that speaks for itself.

In “Trance”, he plays the character of Viju Prasad – a motivational speaker based in Kanyakumari. Rather he can be better defined as a fraudulent salesman trying to make ends meet on the promise of selling hope to his customers. But he is not without his share of problems. With...

‘5 Sundarikal’ to ‘Mamangam’: A list of Malayalam films that have identical titles
Image
MollywoodThe films could be remakes of older films or bear absolutely no connection to its predecessor.Tnm StaffPoster of Mamankam (1979)/ Courtesy - m3db.com and Mamangam (2019)Just as the recent Malayalam film Nayattu was about to release, a Google search of the title threw up another 1980 film by the same name. Starring Jayan, it had released 11 days after the actor’s death as a result of a daredevil stunt in another film. Both the Nayattus tell police stories but have no other similarities. It’s not the first time that the title of an earlier film was reused years later for a film with absolutely no connection to its predecessor. Critic B Vijayakumar writes on Malayalam Music and Movie Encyclopaedia that Sthree (1970) was perhaps the first such film to have a repeated title. Another film called Sthree had released 20 years earlier (in 1950), as an adaptation of a play by the same name.
