Some of the most respected figures in documentary film are calling on Congress to protect funding for public television and radio.
“It’s critically important,” Gordon Quinn, a founding member of Kartemquin Films, said during a recent panel discussion at DC/Dox, the prestigious film festival in the nation’s capital – where senators will determine the fate of funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (Cpb), which supports the work of PBS and NPR.
Last month by a 214-212 vote, the House approved a “rescissions package” to claw back $9 billion in funding previously approved by Congress, including $1.1 billion for Cpb, as demanded by Pres. Trump. Now the measure is moving to the upper chamber, where it could be voted on as soon as next week.
“It’s up to the Senate,” noted Prof. Patricia Aufderheide of American University, a prominent media scholar and author of a widely read book on documentary film.

Renowned documentary filmmaker Ken Burns has spoken out about President Donald Trump‘s plans to cut federal funding for PBS, calling the proposal “shortsighted.” In an interview that aired on Sunday’s (July 6) edition of CBS News’ Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan, Burns told CBS Evening News co-anchor John Dickerson that the funding cuts seem “fooldhardy” and “misguided” because “there is a perception among a handful of people that this is somehow a blue or a left-wing thing.” Burns, whose upcoming six-part series on the American Revolution is slated to air on PBS in November, admitted he is “worried” about the future of PBS. He stated that many of his 40-plus documentaries couldn’t have been made without the help of PBS. “I couldn’t do any of the films I’ve done without them being on PBS. I could go into a streaming service or a premium cable...

As Congress considers legislation that would strip federal funding from public media, filmmaker Ken Burns is speaking out on the prospect, calling it “foolhardy” and telling CBS News’ John Dickerson, “I couldn’t do any of the films I’ve done without them being on PBS.”
Burns has been a prominent voice defending public media, but he also will be a major figure in talking about the American Revolution, as the U.S. prepares to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence next year.
PBS has slated Burns’ six-part The American Revolution for this November. The project, which Burns produced and directed with Sarah Botstein and David Schmidt, will include a companion book from Geoffrey Ward, its primary author who wrote the documentary series.

Someone’s playing fast and loose with the real numbers, and, for once, it may not be Donald Trump — at least when it comes to Potus’ recent multi-million dollar lawsuit settlement with CBS.
Never one to let anyone else have the last word or reluctant to craft reality to his own connivence, Trump on Wednesday claimed that his arm twisting and threats with the outlet garnered a much bigger reward than the $16 million parent company Paramount Global wants to admit to.
“We did a deal for about $16 million plus $16 million, or maybe more than that in advertising,” Trump told reporters upon Air Force One of the settlement with Paramount Global. “So, it’s a combination of 16 plus 16 plus,” Trump said, per the White House pool report. Trump was traveling back to Washington after giving a rally-like Maga speech at Des Moines’ Iowa State Fairgrounds.

Updated, with John Dickerson comments: The news that Paramount Global will settle Donald Trump’s 60 Minutes lawsuit for $16 million certainly did not come as a shock to staffers at CBS News.
For months, there has been a great deal of consternation and even resignation at the prospect of a settlement and the impact that it would have on the news division.
“People are not surprised but also disappointed,” one CBS News staffer said on Wednesday. “There is hope that if the Skydance deal goes through, that could be a fresh start.”
John Dickerson, co-anchor of the CBS Evening News, ended the broadcast with a monologue that touched on viewers’ trust. “The Paramount settlement poses a new obstacle. Can you hold power to account after paying it millions? Can an audience trust you when it thinks you’ve traded away that trust? The audience will decide that. Our job is to show up,...

How did CBS News cover the settlement between its parent company Paramount Global and President Donald Trump? It addressed it head-on, in a blunt piece of commentary from CBS Evening News anchor John Dickerson on Wednesday’s newscast.
Dickerson, who was named co-anchor of the newscast earlier this year alongside Maurice DuBois, told viewers that “the Paramount settlement poses a new obstacle.
“Can you hold power to account after paying it millions? Can an audience trust you when it thinks you’ve traded away that trust?” he continued. “The audience will decide that.”
In a midnight settlement, CBS owner Paramount Global reached a deal with President Trump over a 60 Minutes interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris. The settlement sparked anger and anxiety within CBS News, given the nature of the complaint, which was about how the CBS newsmagazine edited the Harris interview. CBS Evening News continues to face challenges following Norah O’Donnell‘s departure earlier this year, with ratings down compared to the same period last year. As reported by AdWeek, citing Nielsen live-plus-same-day data ratings for the week of June 16, CBS Evening News, hosted by John Dickerson and Maurice Dubois, had 3.981 million total viewers and 526,000 viewers in the Adults 25-54 demo. This was not only down -4% in total viewers and demo to the week prior but also down -8% in total viewers and -15% in demo year-over-year. O’Donnell, who hosted the show between 2019 and 2025, anchored her final episode on January 23. Dickerson and Dubois then took over a new-look version of the program, which adopted a more 60 Minutes-style magazine format. Rather than rattling through the headlines, the new version of Evening News provides longer segments on specific topics. The new Evening News format came from CBS News CEO and president Wendy McMahon.

“It has been an honor to lead this program and an honor to be welcomed into your homes,” Lester Holt said Friday, signing off for the final time as anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News. “I’m so grateful for your trust around here. Facts matter, words matter, journalism matters, and you matter.”
In a news-packed show leading with tornados in the South, Elon Musk’s Doge exit and drug use reports, Sean “Diddy” Combs sex-trafficking trial, wildfires in Canada, and Taylor Swift finally buying back her music, Holt’s departure was one of the biggest stories of all
Holt, 66, announced earlier this year he would be stepping down as anchor after 10 years in the spot, though he isn’t disappearing from the Comcast-owned NBC. He will remain with the network in a full-time role hosting Dateline.
Today, it was that role at the newsmagazine series that got a shout-out from Holt.

CBS has seen hard days, but none like the ones it is going through currently. President Donald Trump is suing the network for $20 billion over a 60 Minutes interview with 2024 then-Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris.
While many anticipate a resolution of the lawsuit soon, things are not looking good for Gayle King. Having been with the network for 12 long years, there is an indication that her time with CBS might be over, as she is looking for an exit before things for the network get possibly worse.

Expect new headlines soon out of “CBS Evening News.”
After being overhauled in major fashion earlier this year, the venerable evening newscast, which has direct ties to Walter Cronkite and Dan Rather, is likely to get some new twists and tweaks. The program, according to two people familiar with CBS News, is seen as being at the of a to-do list for Tom Cibrowski, the executive recently named to lead CBS News and whose decision-making has even more potency after his direct superior, Wendy McMahon, announced on Monday her plans to leave the company.
The show has lost a significant chunk of its viewership since a new format was unveiled in January that relies on the dual-anchor team of John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois, and a story mix that hinges more closely on enterprise and feature reporting than it does on breaking news. For the five-day period starting May 5, “CBS...

The venerable “CBS Evening News” has, for many of its viewers, been something consumed along with dinner. In recent weeks, the show has served up reports that could stop someone in mid-bite.
Correspondent Nikki Battiste recently traveled to New Jersey, where CBS News cameras were allowed into the bedroom of an Als patient on the day she had chosen to die. The video stopped just before the woman drank medicine that would put her into a deep sleep before passing on — all legal under state law. Half a world away, foreign correspondent Debora Patta recently managed to get into Sudan after two years of trying, and delivered a searing report on the plight of children there who aren’t getting the help once expected from the now-shuttered United States Agency for International Development. One infant shown in the report was starving, barely able to move, and clearly blind in one eye.

CBS Mornings will move from its Times Square studio to the CBS Broadcast Center, with the relocation expected some time later this year.
The network’s news division has been cutting costs — as have other media outlets — and the CBS Mornings move is among a series of changes in recent months. A network spokesperson confirmed the move, which was first reported in the New York Post.
CBS Mornings has been in the Times Square space since 2021, around the time the network morning show unveiled a new format and Nate Burleson joined Gayle King and Tony Dokoupil as co-hosts.
