Them: The Scare TV Review
Image
Plot: Set in 1991 Los Angeles, the story centers on LAPD Homicide Detective Dawn Reeve, who is assigned to a new case: the gruesome murder of a foster home mother that has left even the most hardened detectives shaken. Navigating a tumultuous time in Los Angeles, with a city on the razor’s edge of chaos, Dawn is determined to stop the killer. But as she draws closer to the truth, something ominous and malevolent grips her and her family…

Review: The first season of Them debuted on Prime Video close to the one-year mark after Covid-19. Marketed as the small-screen continuation of Jordan Peele’s brand of big-screen horror, the series blended social commentary, political relevance, and disturbing imagery as it chronicled the Emory family’s move to Southern California. Led by a great performance by Deborah Ayorinde, Them (subtitled Covenant) was almost too violent for its own good. While I enjoyed the first season,...

‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’: Grantham Coleman Joins In Key Role For Season 3 Of Starz Series
Image
Exclusive: Grantham Coleman is joining the Starz family.

Coleman will star in a key role in season three of Power Book III: Raising Kanan. It comes after the drama series’ dramatic cliffhanger at the end of season two, which aired on Sunday.

Coleman, who has starred in series such as FX’s The Americans, will play Ronnie Mathis, Unique’s older brother, who was recently released from prison. Ronnie’s stoic demeanor belies a shocking ruthlessness. It’s not that Ronnie’s immoral, it’s that he’s amoral, conscienceless, unyielding and vindictive.

Production on season three of the family crime drama series has started in New York.

Set in the early 1990’s, the third series in the Power universe tells the origin story of Kanan Stark, and his entry into the criminal world through his mother, who ruthlessly runs the family’s drug empire. It stars MeKai Curtis in...

"Raising Kanan"'s Sascha Penn Breaks Down All the "Sins and Secrets" Exposed in the Season 2 Finale
Image
There's a street war brewing in "Raising Kanan" that's caused a family and its empire to fall apart. Now, it'll take a whole lot of manpower and trust to put it all back together.

"Raising Kanan"'s epic season two finale titled "If Y'Don't Know, Now Y'Know," which aired Oct. 23, put a lot into perspective for Kanan (Mekai Curtis), Raquel (Patina Miller), Lou (Malcolm Mays), Marvin (London Brown), and Jukebox (Hailey Kilgore). Between the shootouts that may (or may not) have resulted in the deaths of Jukebox's mother Kenya (LeToya Luckett), Lou's artist Zisa (Paulina Singer), and Unique's (Joey Bada) right-hand man Worrell (John Clay III); Raquel getting snaked by her plug and out of a distribution deal; and heat from the mob coming down on everyone, things are in complete disarray.

"Let's just say that pretty much everyone who took a bullet in the finale is in dire straits.

‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ Showrunner Sascha Penn Teases Potential Romance for Raquel After Explosive Season 2 Finale: ‘I Wouldn‘t Rule It Out’
Image
Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers for “If Y’Don’t Know, Now Y’Know,” the Season 2 finale of “Power Book III: Raising Kanan” on Starz.

Rebuilding Raquel’s empire after all her decisions backfired will be an uphill battle, but she may not have to walk the road alone.

Season 2 of “Power Book III: Raising Kanan” ended with an explosive shoot-out between Raquel (Patina Miller), Lou (Malcolm Mays), and Marvin (London Brown), who battled Sal’s (Michael Rispoli) Mafia in New Jersey. The exchange resulted in the deaths of newcomers Zisa (Paulina Singer), Cartier (Omar Dorsey), and Kenya (LeToya Luckett).

Raquel had hit rock bottom with her plans to extend her operations to Jersey, D.C., and the south thwarted, and her son, Kanan (Mekai Curtis) choosing his new relationship with his father over hers. And at a moment where death was knocking on Raquel’s door, she’s saved by her former rival,...

How ‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ Newcomers Are Shaking Up the Family Business in Season 2
Image
The family business rules everything in the “Power” universe — but in Season 2 of “Power Book III: Raising Kanan,” some new characters might have a few plans to shake up dynamics as fans know them.

LeToya Luckett, Omar Dorsey, and Paulina Singer have joined the series this season, and each of their characters step onto the scene with something to prove.

As the second season opened with a regretful Kanan (Mekhai Curtis), the teen reunited with his mother Raquel (Patina Miller) and the rest of the Thomas family in New York following the Season 1 blowout between him and Officer Howard (Omar Epps). But he soon learns of new family affiliations, and business is expanding faster than before.

The game looks different in Season 2 in more ways than one. Lou Lou (Malcolm Mays) wants to continue building his recording studio with a new singer, Zisa (Paulina Singer) — and Raquel’s attempt to...

There's lots more of Kanan Stark's early story on the way. Power Book III: Raising Kanan is scheduled to return for its second season on Starz this Sunday, August 14th, and now, the cable channel has renewed the show for a third season.

"Raising Kanan" Star Patina Miller Says We're Going to See Raq Sweat in Season 2: "Strap In For the Ride"
Image

If there's one thing we learned from the first installment of "Power Book III: Raising Kanan," it's to not mess with Raquel "Raq" Thomas, played by Patina Miller. As a drug queen-pin and Kanan Stark's (Mekai Curtis) mom, Raq will do whatever it takes to expand her empire and keep her family together, even though their bond has started to break down.

Season one concludes with Kanan escaping to Maryland with Symphony Bosket (Toby Sandeman) after shooting Detective Howard (Omar Epps), which Raq had Unique (Joey Bada) take the fall for. However, things don't pan out like Raq hoped, and Howard is still alive. According to Miller, season two picks up three months after the shooting, so the characters have had time to sort through everything that's gone down. "Kanan is dealing with the consequences of doing something like what he did and how he's changed," Miller tells Popsugar.

‘Raising Kanan’ Strengthens the ‘Power’-verse Formula in Season 2: TV Review
Image
Nearly four months have passed since Starz’s sprawling “Power” universe was last on the air, following the April season finale of the Tommy Egan-focused “Force.” That’s not much time, and certainly not the longest span of time between installments in “Power” creator Courtney Kemp’s ever-widening tableau of cocaine entrepreneurs. But it feels like a long time, evidence that Kemp has succeeded into turning “Power” into a Marvel-style narrative ecosystem, for better and for worse.

The “for worse” part comes when any extended amount of time passes, when the richness and depth of a long-running, hyperconnected story triggers the audience’s anxiety about their ability to keep track of all its machinations. For example, “Force” reintroduced O.G. character Liliana (Audrey Esparza), who hadn’t been seen in over seven years since her initial three-episode arc in “Power.” The move ultimately paid off, but it also signaled to the fanbase that,...

Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 2 Trailer is Here, and the Family Empire is About to Implode
Tony Danza, Wendell Pierce, Erika Woods, Malcolm Mays, Patina Miller, Stefano Marchetti, Hailey Kilgore, Joey Bada$$, Mekai Curtis, and Marvin Thomas in Power Book III: Raising Kanan (2021)
When Power Book III: Raising Kanan premieres its second season on August 14, we're in for a lot of drama.

Raquel "Raq" Thomas (Patina Miller) is preparing her son, Kanan Stark (MeKai Curtis), to take over for her.

"You're getting to an age, Kanan, where you're going to want to start figuring out what you want for your life," Raq says in the new trailer.

Raq is well and truly in control of everything when the second season picks up, at least according to the trailer.

Kanan's life was on the line, but it looks like he's ready to start anew.

Understandably, there are some skeptics when it comes to Kanan taking over.

"I know who my son is and I know what he's capable of," she fires back.

"I can't protect you the way that I thought I could, Mom," Kanan says at one point.

It's certainly an interesting dynamic,...

Mekai Curtis Teases "Raising Kanan" Season 2: "It Really Comes to a Boiling Point"
Image

Mekai Curtis knows we're anxiously waiting for season two of "Power Book III: Raising Kanan," and he promises it's going to be worth it. It's going to be a really, really interesting ride."

"There's going to be a lot of emotions thrown up in the air."

Season one ended with Kanan (Curtis) heading to Maryland to hide out after shooting Detective Howard (Omar Epps), which Raq (Patina Miller) set up Unique (Joey Bada) to take the fall for. But unbeknownst to her, Kanan didn't get actually get the job done. Howard is still fighting for his life at the hospital,...

Why Wesley Snipes Walked Away From The New Jack City Sequel
Barry Michael Cooper - Philadelphia - September 2019
In fall 2021, "New Jack City" screenwriter Barry Michael Cooper announced in a tweet that he was working on a prequel to the 1991 neo-gangster flick. The tweet came two years after Deadline reported that Warner Bros. had tapped filmmaker and "Power Book III: Raising Kanan" actor Malcolm M. Mays to pen a reboot to the film. No matter who writes the eventual script for the "New Jack City" follow-up, it appears the project will be made without the services of the original's leading star, Wesley Snipes.

Set in 1986 Harlem, "New Jack City" follows undercover detective Scotty Appleton (Ice-t) as he plots...

You can hear the nostalgia in Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson’s voice when he talks about hip-hop music in the ’90s and how it shapes his latest Starz crime drama Power Book III: Raising Kanan.

The prequel series, which acts as an origin story for the teenage version of his popular Power character Kanan Stark (now played by Mekai Curtis), takes place in South Jamaica, Queens and establishes the New York borough as a character with beloved rap hits from that era setting the scene. And in this Sunday’s episode (8/7c), Lou-Lou’s (Snowfall‘s Malcolm M. Mays) foray into...

Power Book III: Raising Kanan Trailer Establishes a Kingpin Hierarchy, and Kanan's Mom Is the Queen — Watch
Image
It’s hard to say if Power Book III: Raising Kanan will be any good, but if the official trailer Starz dropped for the franchise’s latest spinoff is any indication, this offering is going to be fire.

Set to LL Cool J’s “Mama Said Knock You Out,” the 90-second montage debuted on Thursday and quickly establishes Kanan’s mom Raquel (Madam Secretary‘s Patina Miller) as a drug queenpin and her son (Kirby Buckets‘ Mekai Curtis) as a criminally astute prince on the rise. Power Book III premieres Sunday, July 18 on the premium cabler and, per the trailer,...

In case you’ve never seen the film, “Snipes played arrogant New York City drug lord Nino Brown during the 1980s crack epidemic. Ice-t portrayed Scotty Appleton, a detective who goes undercover in Nino’s gang, the Cash Money Brothers, to bring down the drug lord for taking the life of his mother. Yet another classic is getting the reboot treatment. Warner Bros. is planning to revisit the 90s crime flick New Jack City, with Malcolm M. Mays set to pen the screenplay. Little has been revealed about the project yet, so it's not clear how it will be updated to suit the modern context. In any case, this is one that the studio seems to think is worth taking another look at nearly 30 years after the original hit theaters.

According to a new report, Malcolm M. Mays, known best for his starring role on FX's Snowfall, will write the rebooted version of New Jack City, with Bill Gerber (A Star Is Born) on board to produce. No director has been set at this time. While Mays is known best currently for his work in front of the camera, he's been making inroads as both a writer and director. Mays also penned Ferguson,...

Second Trailer for Dark Comedy 'The Day Shall Come' by Chris Morris
"His 'get out of jail' card is going to jail." IFC Films has debuted an official Us trailer for the dark comedy The Day Shall Come, the new film from acclaimed British filmmaker Chris Morris, who last made Four Lions in 2010. The UK trailer debuted a few weeks ago, but this one just a bit better. This initially premiered at the SXSW Film Festival. Based on 100 true stories, the "explosive" film is an emotionally gripping, laugh out loud thriller that exposes the dark farce at the heart of the homeland security project: It is harder to catch a real terrorist than it is to manufacture your own. A preacher in Miami is tricked into becoming the liaison between the FBI and a real terrorist. Marchánt Davis stars as Moses, joined by Anna Kendrick, Danielle Brooks, Denis O'Hare, Kayvan Novak, Jim Gaffigan, Pej Vahdat, Mousa Kraish, Miles Robbins, James Adomian, & Malcolm M. Mays.
