Judge Rejects UFC’s $335 Million Class-Action Lawsuit Settlement With Mma Fighters
Image
A federal judge scuttled the proposed $335 million settlement between the UFC and fighters in two separate class-action lawsuits who alleged the Mma promoter violated antitrust laws.

On Tuesday, Judge Richard Franklin Boulware II of the U.S. District Court in Nevada issued a ruling denying the settlement. The judge, who did not provide any explanation in the initial ruling, set a status conference for Aug. 19 and a trial date of Oct. 28 for one of the two cases that were part of the settlement, Le v. Zuffa. It’s possible the parties could reach a new settlement agreement before then for the court’s consideration.

The decision comes after Tko Group Holdings, UFC’s parent company, announced an agreement in March 2024 to pay $335 million to settle two class-action lawsuits. Zuffa, the predecessor entity that owned and operated UFC, was the defendant in five related class-action lawsuits filed between December 2014 and March...

Tko to Pay $335 Million to Settle UFC Athlete Class-Action Lawsuits
Image
Tko Group Holdings, the parent company of UFC, disclosed that it will pay $335 million to settle two class-action lawsuits filed by former UFC fighters alleging the Mma promoter violated antitrust laws.

Zuffa, the predecessor entity that owned and operated UFC, was the defendant in five related class-action lawsuits filed between December 2014 and March 2015, which were consolidated into a single action in June 2015 (Le et al. v. Zuffa). An additional lawsuit, Johnson et al. v. Zuffa, was filed in 2021.

On March 13, 2024, Tko reached an agreement to settle all claims asserted in both class action lawsuits for a total of $335 million payable in installments over a period of time, the company disclosed in an SEC filing Wednesday. “The terms will be memorialized in a long-form agreement and then submitted to the court for approval,” Tko said, adding that it anticipates the settlement amount will be deductible for tax purposes.

The lawsuits alleged...

Film Review: Day Zero (2023) by Joey De Guzman
Image
A common ploy in modern action and horror films is the use of employing combat sports veterans in prominent roles, both for the believability of the character to realistically perform such activity on-screen and also to help boost profits by attaching a popular name amongst the crowded cast. Whether it's the world of Mma with the likes of Michael Bisping, Ronda Rousey, or Randy Couture or pro wrestling with “The Rock” Dwayne Johnson, Dave Bautista, and John Cena being among the biggest stars in the industry, the stage is rife for veterans from all aspects of the sport to move into the acting field. That's definitely the case with Joey De Guzman's upcoming Philippine-lensed zombie title “Day Zero,” which serves as kickboxing champion Brandon Vera's chance in the spotlight, to be released shortly on digital and physical media from WellGo USA.

Interview with Erik Matti: I love big scenes. I love putting them together and making it work. It’s like ballet where all the elements come together in synchronicity.
Erik Matti is one of Asia’s most ambitious filmmakers. An assistant director to Peque Gallaga, he made his debut with Scorpio Nights 2 (1999), a sequel to his mentor’s erotic classic. He has made subversive horrors, world-building fantasy epics, gritty crime dramas and costumed superhero films. While always audience-focused, Matti and his films are becoming more political; they have recently focused on systemic corruption and religious hypocrisy in the Philippines. BuyBust is his headiest achievement yet, spinning high-octane action tropes into a scathing commentary on the ongoing drug war.

On the occasion of his film screening at the 17th New York Asian Film Festival, we speak with him about his career, and his way of shooting films, Anne Curtis and Brandon Vera, the most impressive scene in the movie, Duterte’s War on Drugs, and many other topics

Your career basically begun through your cooperation with Peque Gallaga. Can you...

Fantasia Review: ‘BuyBust’ Gets Lost in Excessively Violent Carnage
Police director Alvarez (Nonie Buencamino) and his prized team leader Dela Cruz (Lao Rodriguez) are finally making headway with their war on drugs throughout the slums of Filipino capital Manila. They’ve already cleaned sections long-thought lost to crime and currently have one of kingpin Biggie Chen’s (Arjo Atayde) mid-level operatives (Alex Calleja’s Toban) in custody. A little “good cop/bad cop” sets the stage for how far law enforcement will go to earn their collar as well as how loyal Chen’s foot soldiers might prove. If they can cajole Toban into wearing a wire while helping them smoke out his extremely elusive boss, Alvarez’s mission would move even closer to completion. Compile the right support team to surround them on this sting operation and victory appears within their grasp.

Let’s just say writer/director Erik Matti isn’t interested in tactics or covert precision...

BuyBust is a 2018 Philippine action thriller that has been getting rave reviews in North America and we now have a fresh look at Erik Matti's intense trailer for the movie, which debuted at Comic-Con today. In addition to directing the film, Matti also co-wrote the screenplay with Anton Santamaria. Pre-production started back in 2016, which is also when the cast was announced. Anne Curtis and Mma fighter Brandon Vera star in BuyBust, which Matti calls his first "full-on action film," and declared that it's the most ambitious project that he's ever been a part of.

Film Review: ‘BuyBust’
Victor Neri, Anne Curtis, Levi Ignacio, Joross Gamboa, Brandon Vera, Mara Lopez, Sheenly Gener, Lao Rodriguez, Alex Calleja, AJ Muhlach, Arjo Atayde, and Tarek El Tayech in BuyBust (2018)
“BuyBust” is a superbly executed action film about drug squad members fighting for their lives in a maze-like Manila slum that resembles nothing less than hell on earth. Director and co-writer Erik Matti has delivered an explosive exercise in kinetic cinema that also offers potent commentary on the devastating social consequences of the Philippine government’s war on drugs. Following its world premiere at New York Asian Film Festival, “BuyBust” will become a must-see item for genre fans. It looks certain to spark controversy and attract large audiences when it releases locally Aug. 1, and should enjoy a successful run in selected North American cities from Aug. 10. Worldwide Netflix rollout is set for Nov. 1.

“BuyBust” barely digs into the background of any characters and doesn’t need to. All we need to know is that Drug Enforcement Agency recruit Nina Manigan (Anne Curtis) is the sole survivor of a team that...

17th New York Asian Film Festival Screens 21 North American Premieres
The 17th annual New York Asian Film Festival closed July 15 after two weeks of boasting four world premieres, 21 North American premieres, and 12 New York premieres. Produced by Subway Cinema and the Film Society at Lincoln Center, the Nyaff aims to showcase Asian cinematic excellence, and to expose audiences to non-Eurocentric, emotionally compelling, and provocative Asian film. For its closing, the festival chose box office darling Erik Matti’s “BuyBust,” an action film starring megawatt actor Anne Curtis and Mma world champion Brandon Vera, all of whom attended the screening. The festival also delivers awards, this year honoring Hong Kong’s Dante Lam with a Daniel A. Craft Award for Excellence in Action Cinema. The festival’s schedule included a special screening...

Film Review: BuyBust (2018) by Erik Matti
Erik Matti is one of the most recognizable and most crucial figures of the Filipino film industry, with films like “On the Job”, “Honor Thy Father” and “The Aswang Chronicles” among others, along with his work on production. “BuyBust” is a film that comes to establish his prowess on creating genre films through a humongous production that included 309 stuntmen and 1,278 extras, and relentless action.

“BuyBust” screened at the 17th New York Asian Film Festival

Nina Manigan is the new recruit of an elite anti-narcotic squad. However, she is definitely not a rookie, since a few months back, she was a member of another team which was completely eradicated after their leader gave them the wrong orders. This time, Nina and a group of the best men and women of the squad have to accomplish a buybust, with the help of a captured “asset”, Teban, who used to be a member...

Buy Bust – On The Job Director Erik Matti Enters Martial Arts Genre
Erik Matti (Tiktik: The Aswang Chronicles, Rigodon), the maestro Filipino director, really knocked it out the park with his 2013 hired-assassin thriller On the Job. Not one to rest on his laurels, his latest crime flick, Honor Thy Father (not-related to The Godfather spin off) has also been garnering much praise among critics.

But Matti is nothing if not versatile, and as such has now decided to turn his attention towards the martial arts genre with the upcoming film, Buy Bust. Although still just in pre-production, it has already been announced that the film will feature American-Filipino mixed-martial arts Ufc star Brandon Vera (Kamandag), and Filipino-Australian female actor, Anne Curtis (Blood Ransom, The Gifted).

Information regarding the film’s plot remains sparse, but if we were to hazard a guess we would expect gangsters, drug-lords and of course ball-busting police officers, all no doubt served up with a heavy dose of...

5 Main Card Predictions For Ufc Fight Night: Shogun vs. Saint Preux
Ufc

Shogun Rua is a legend. Make no mistake about that. He has had wars in Pride. He has been Ufc Light Heavyweight champion. He took part in a fight against Dan Henderson in 2011 that many feel is up there as the greatest Ufc fight of all time, if not the greatest Mma fight of all time.

However, his career has been in something of a tailspin since losing his title to Jon Jones in March of 2011. Jones made the most of a last minute title shot, shocked the world, took Shogun’s belt, and went on to become the most dominant champion in Ufc history. Shogun, meanwhile, struggled to get back on track. He beat Forrest Griffin later in the year, then lost the aforementioned bout with Dan Henderson. He picked up a win over Brandon Vera in 2012, then dropped two straight, to Alexander Gustafsson and Chael Sonnen. He...

Ufc: Brandon Vera Out After Eight Years
Youtube

According to a report by Fox Sports, Brandon Vera, who once promised to hold a belt in two weight classes in the Ufc, has been released by the promotion – or two be more specific, the two sides have “cut ties.”

Vera started his tenure with the company in 2005, at Ultimate Fight Night 2 where he won via Ko against Fabiano Scherner. After a 3-0 run at heavyweight, it was announced that his next match, against Frank Mir, would be a title eliminator.

It looked like Vera’s promise of holding two belts would have a chance of coming to fruition – especially after he won the Mir fight by Tko. However, a contract dispute saw him lose his shot at the belt. He would then suffer the first two losses of his career, to Tim Sylvia and Fabricio Werdum, before dropping to light heavyweight.

He would go 4-4 (1) at light heavyweight...

Ufc: 10 Reasons Jon Jones Went From Good Guy To Bad Guy
Gregory Payan/AP/Press Association Images

Remember when Jon “Bones” Jones first burst onto the Ufc scene in 2008? He dominated Andre Gusmao in his debut, threw Tuf 1 runner-up Stephan Bonnar around the Octagon like a rag doll, smashed Vladimir Matyushenko and Brandon Vera, submitted Jake O’Brien and Ryan Bader, then won the Ufc light heavyweight title by stopping Mauricio “Shogun” Rua via Tko in 2011. At just 23-years old Jones had become the youngest champion in Ufc history.

Fans were enamored and enthralled as Jones continued to smash the competition. He made legends look like children and fans began contemplating a super fight between Jones and then reigning Ufc middleweight champ Anderson “The Spider” Silva. Onlookers wondered in amazement if the young upstart could finally be the one to match Silva’s skills inside the Octagon.

Then something happened, not all at once, but fans started turning on Jones. Holes...
