James Earl Jones, Authoritative Actor and Voice of Darth Vader, Dies at 93

James Earl Jones, a commanding presence onscreen who nonetheless gained greater fame off-camera as the sonorous voice of Star Wars villain Darth Vader and Mufasa, the benevolent leader in The Lion King, died Monday. He was 93.

Jones, who burst into national prominence in 1970 with his powerful Oscar-nominated performance as America’s first Black heavyweight champion in The Great White Hope, died at his home in Dutchess County, New York, Independent Artist Group announced.

The distinguished star made his big-screen debut in Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) and was noteworthy in many other films, including Claudine (1974) opposite Diahann Carroll; Field of Dreams (1989), as the reclusive author Terence Mann; and The Sandlot (1993), as the intimidating neighborhood guy Mr. Mertle.

The 2011 animated film which received an Oscar nomination at the 2012 Academy Awards is climbing up the charts of one of the world's most popular streaming services. Rio, which was written by Carlos Saldanha, Earl Richey Jones, Todd Jones, Don Rhymer, Joshua Sternin, Jennifer Ventimilia, and Sam Harper, is sitting firmly as the eighth-most popular movie streaming on Max. In addition to serving as a scribe, Saldanha also directed the film, which features an immensely stacked ensemble of Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway, George Lopez, and Jamie Foxx. Rio follows two animals, Blu (Eisenberg) and Jewel (Hathaway) on a trip to Rio de Janeiro. Jane Lynch, Wanda Sykes, Leslie Mann, and Will.i.am also star in Rio, which writer/director Saldanha also makes a small cameo.

Nails Announce New Album and 2024 North American Tour, Unleash Lead Single “Imposing Will”: Stream

Nails have announced their fourth studio album, Every Burning Bridge, out August 30th, along with the lead single and opening track “Imposing Will.”

The California band will be supporting the album with a short run of North American tour dates this fall. The initial leg (with support from 200 Stab Wounds and more) kicks off on September 11th in Montreal and runs through September 20th in Brooklyn, New York.

Nails will then play the New England Metal & Hardcore Festival on September 21st in Worcester, Massachusetts, before heading overseas to the UK for a slot at Damnation Festival in Manchester on November 2nd. Lastly, a brief three-day California run with Xibalba is set for mid-November.
