"We All Burst Into Tears": 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Cast Remembers the Moment Greg Baldwin Became Uncle Iroh
Image
Few characters in Avatar: The Last Airbender are as beloved as Uncle Iroh. From the beginning of the series, he's shown to be one of the wisest and most understanding members of the Fire Nation, trying to guide Prince Zuko (Dante Basco) down the right path throughout his journey. In addition to excellent writing, he was also defined by a memorable voice-acting performance by the late great Mako that helped establish Iroh as this pure-hearted, yet fierce, grandfatherly figure. With the actor's tragic passing from cancer in 2006, however, the torch was passed to Greg Baldwin to finish out the series and take the iconic character into the future. During a panel at Fan Expo Denver moderated by Collider's Maggie Lovitt, the cast reminisced about Baldwin's first day in the booth and how he immediately, and emotionally, became Iroh in their eyes.

"My memories of when I was recording...

Avatar Actor Is Convinced Nickelodeon Wouldn't Make The Og The Last Airbender Today
Image
OneAvatar: The Last Airbender voice actor is convinced Nickelodeon wouldn't have greenlit the animated series if it were pitched for the first time today. The originalAvatar: The Last Airbender is widely regarded as one of the best animated series of all time, despite being targeted towards children. It deals with complex subject matter, including colonization, cultural oppression, prejudice, emotional abuse, spirituality, and more.

One of the reasons Avatar is still so beloved, even though it ended after three seasons in 2008, is that it handles these important topics in an accessible and fun way without ever glossing over the trauma caused by living in a war-torn world. Aang's duty as the Avatar, Zuko's redemption arc, and Sokka, Katara, and Toph's emotional family histories are treated with the gravity and respect they deserve.

Avatar's brand is as popular as ever – three animated movies and a new Avatar show are in development,...

Top 5 Non-Bending Fighting Techniques in Avatar: The Last Airbender
Image
It is well known that a slew of real-world martial arts were used to craft the bending abilities in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Be it Sokka, or Ty Lee, or Mai, or Master Paindao, the world of Avatar is filled with strategists and masters that have honed their skills to a point where they can hold their own against and even beat seasoned bending masters without even breaking a sweat.

17 Years Later, I Still Feel Katara Should’ve Ended Up With Zuko Instead of Aang for a Good Reason
Image
The canon of Avatar: The Last Airbender makes a very potent cast for Zuko and Katara ending up together. While these characters ended up taking completely different paths in their lives, it is easy to spot that even subtextually, the narrative was always primed to serve a relationship between The Blue Spirit and the Painted Lady.

A slew of cast and crew members of Avatar: The Last Airbender believed that there was some merit in keeping Zuko and Katara together, and there have been some conflicting statements about the nature of how the relationship might have been in the cards, to be part of the official narrative. Whether it was or not is a different matter, because in terms of the flow of narrative, it makes complete sense that Zuko and Katara should have ended up together.

The narrative itself seemed to be a Zuko/Katara shipper.. Katara and Zuko...

“If I had the power to green light…”: Iroh Va Greg Baldwin’s Idea for an Avatar Spinoff Is a Literal Jackpot
Image
The Avatar-verse is expanding, with a slew of projects headed towards Paramount+ and theatres. However, there is one show that is going to help the franchise expand to a much younger audience, but only if Avatar Studios would green-light this one pitch from one of the show’s most beloved actors.

Greg Baldwin, the second voice of Uncle Iroh, pitched a brilliant show that would not only cater to a younger audience but would also have adults watching it, despite the people it is aimed at. The show would be a spin-off, focused on Uncle Iroh’s Tea Shop.

Why Is Azula's Fire Blue In Avatar: The Last Airbender?
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

"Avatar: The Last Airbender" rose to a whole other level of greatness in its second, and some would say best, season. ("Book 2: Earth.") A lot of that comes down to two new characters the show introduced to its ensemble.

The heroes got a new teammate: Toph (Michaela Jill Murphy), the blind earthbending prodigy. But they also had a new threat to contend with: Fire Nation Princess Azula (Grey DeLisle), who was hunting both Avatar Aang (Zach Tyler Eisen) and her exiled brother Prince Zuko (Dante Basco). Smart, powerful, and ruthless, Azula is seemingly the "perfect princess." She's a firebending prodigy and success comes naturally to her.

Another detail that sets Azula apart is her firebending. In "Avatar," where people can bend one of the four classical elements, Firebenders transmute fire out of their own breath and chi and then control the flames.

In the Netflix adaptation, Lee portrays the fan-favorite role of Uncle Iroh, who was voiced by the late Mako Iwamatsu and Greg Baldwin in the original animated series.

How A Five-Minute Meeting Convinced Cartoon Network To Bring Back Samurai Jack
Image
Genndy Tartakovsky's 2001 animated series "Samurai Jack" is probably one of the best of its era. The series boasted a peculiar and stoic tone, with the title hero (Phil Lamarr) staying quiet for vast blocks of the show. Samurai Jack was lost in the distant future, thanks to the sorcery of a tricky trickster god named Aku, and a lot of the series was devoted to Jack's exploration of strange, new alien settings. "Samurai Jack." also featured a unique, neo-cubist aesthetic; characters didn't have black-line outlines, and backgrounds were often abstract and blocky. Fans will also hasten to add the overwhelmingly awesome action of "Samurai Jack." If one is animating with blocky shapes and abstract backgrounds, the action can be just as stylized. The fight scenes on "Samurai Jack" are the stuff of legend.

"Samurai Jack" ran until 2004, and there had long been plans to adapt the series into a live-action feature film.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the most iconic animes of all time. Yes, a Certain Fan-Favorite Song Is Still in the Live-Action ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ — but Not How You Think
Image
One of the riskiest scenes in Netflix’s new “Avatar: The Last Airbender” adaptation has nothing to do with any of the four elements, flying a 12-year-old over the skies of the Earth Kingdom, or the nefarious schemes of the extremely hot Fire Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim). It’s a simple two-minute scene tucked in the middle of Episode 4, mostly shot-reverse shot, nothing fancy. Of course, you don’t need that many camera positions to shoot a funeral.

This funeral is a new twist and old information in the story of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” — and an example of the live-action adaptation at its most successful in both deviating from and honoring its source material. The original animated version of “Avatar” had 20 episodes per season to slowly tease out its characters’ depth, even those loyal to the Fire Nation who have been trying to destroy the Avatar (hence why...

10 TV Characters It's Basically Impossible To Hate
Image
Beloved TV characters are often those who prioritize others, making them relatable and endearing. Moral fortitude and bravery can earn a character respect and adoration from the entire fan base. Characters who combine likability with intriguing traits can captivate audiences and enhance the drama of a show.

Most TV characters have their fans and detractors, but there are some good-natured souls who are universally beloved. Since TV shows can be on for many years, most characters need to have some kind of flaw which keeps them interesting to viewers and makes them a constant source of conflict. This usually stops them from being loved by everyone. Even if most fans like a character, there tend to be just as many who point out their shortcomings, especially after watching them for so many episodes across so many years. Compelling characters and lovable characters rarely overlap, but there are a few exceptions...

Overhyped Avatar: The Last Airbender Characters
Image
Fans often overrate Iroh, praising him as the strongest and most significant character in Avatar, despite him having limited screen time and backstory. Toph is beloved by fans for her comedic moments and combat expertise, but her abrasive and cruel personality gets overlooked. Aang, while charming, is often overrated in terms of power. He spent much of the series joking around and neglecting his responsibilities as the Avatar.

Avatar: The Last Airbender's popularity has consistently inspired intense fan discussions for nearly two decades. Fans gather to talk about their best bending moments, their favorite Book, and their favorite characters. Sometimes fans see what they want to, and their opinion is based on how they feel rather than the facts of the show.

This can lead to certain characters becoming vastly overrated. Some are seen as more significant to the plot. with different character traits, or stronger than they are in-universe.

Nickelodeon's popular animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender ran from 2005 to 2008, introducing viewers to a fractured world in which people could manipulate the elements; only one figure (known as the Avatar) could control all four. The show garnered a massive fan base and spawned a large franchise, including a spinoff series called The Legend of Korra, a negatively received live-action movie, and a Netflix series. There is also a new animated movie currently in the works.

Avatar: The Last Airbender Actor Reacts To Creators’ Departure From Netflix Show
It seems odd to think that this time last week everyone was excited for news about how Netflix’s live action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender was progressing. Now the only thing people are expecting is news of how badly it’s going to go. The latest to add to the assumption of disappointment is Greg Baldwin, Iroh’s voice actor.

The downturn in expectations stems from the surprise departure from the production of Avatar’s original creators Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko, citing “creative differences” of Netflix failing to uphold its promise to allow the pair the necessary freedom required to bring their vision to life in a new medium. In reaction, Baldwin posted a short series of tweets expressing his immediate thoughts on the situation.

Wow. Just…wow!

Seriously…I'm gonna have to ruminate on this.

Synopses For Upcoming Supergirl, The Flash And Arrow Episodes Surface
In under two weeks, some of our favorite DC TV shows will return to airwaves with new episodes. So, as we continue the sprint toward their respective season finales, it’s only natural that official synopses for each surface well in advance. Given that, we’re able to peer into the future and discuss what’s to come in the first week of May for Supergirl, The Flash and Arrow.

Obviously, we’ll begin with Supergirl, since it’s the first to air. When examining the description, one can’t help but compare Alex being kidnapped by an unknown party to Kara having a price put on her head not long ago. And although Rhea is in this episode, I’m not so sure she’s responsible because this kind of has Cadmus’ stench on it. But, I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Here’s the early word on “Alex,...

'Samurai Jack': How the Cult Animated Series Finally Returned to TV
Phil LaMarr and Mako in Samurai Jack (2001)
Think back to 2001, when SpongeBob SquarePants reigned supreme on Nickelodeon and the Cartoon Network was deep in the age of Powerpuff Girls, Dexter’s Laboratory and Johnny Bravo — clever, talky animated shows who trafficked in wackiness and often took their storytelling cues from live-action sitcoms. Then along came a samurai named Jack: a laconic lone-wolf hero who uttered fewer words in a whole season than most toon characters spoke in a single episode. The creation of animator (and Dex-Lab veteran) Genndy Tartakovsky, this feudal-era Japanese prince was sucked into a...

Samurai Jack Season 5 Review
Two episodes were provided prior to broadcast.

Over twelve years have gone by since it left the air, but Samurai Jack is finally back. Creator Genndy Tartakovsky’s highly imaginative series took the animation world by storm when it debuted back in 2001 with a visual style that was equal parts anime and Frank Miller and ran the gamut of genre with pop culture influences ranging from Akira Kurosawa to Blade Runner.

The tale of a noble samurai trying to return to the past so he may destroy the demon Aku and prevent the world from falling under his rule ran for four seasons before ending in 2004. Season 5 will reflect the show’s elongated absence by moving fifty years into the future, where every time portal has been destroyed and a weathered Samurai Jack (Phil Lamarr) has stopped aging.

The series’ signature split screen presentation is kept intact for this upcoming season.

Wdbj Shooter Targeted Slain Reporter Over Harmless Comments
Wdbj shooter Vester Flanagan targeted reporter Alison Parker because of harmless comments she made as an intern at the station in 2012. “One was something about ‘swinging’ by some place; the other was out in the ‘field,'” assistant news director Greg Baldwin wrote in a report that summarized complaints made by Flanagan about Parker. It referred to her as Alison Bailey; Bailey was her middle name. These are the comments Flanagan seemed to be referring to when he tweeted hours after murdering Parker and photographer Adam Ward on live TV on Wednesday. Kickstartin': Help a Couple of Character Designers Unlock the 'Monster Volume'
A couple of Insomniac Games vets' labor of love involves putting a bunch of spacemen, creatures, beasties, and monsters in a premium hardcover. And with 26 days to go, it looks like it's already about to happen.

The Monster Volume is an independent project from Insomniac Games' Lead Character Artist Greg Baldwin and character designer, art director, and most recently, principal artist Dave Guertin, and is based on five years of their original work. Baldwin and Guertin have their own design/illustration studio, CreatureBox, where they provide design services for animation, graphic design, and illustration.

Their proposed hardcover will run 140 pages with measurements of 8.5" x 12.5" and will also be available in a digital edition for those of us who don't want any more physical media in our homes.

Based on the sample images on their Kickstarter page, you can see some Ratchet & Clank-inflected visions making their way into the work.

Fruitiness vs. Truthiness: VolunteerMatch Challenges Stephen Colbert to Taste-Off
Ben & Jerry's is causing a buzz with its latest Csr and promotional efforts.

Ben & Jerry's teamed up with Target recently to offer an exclusive Ben & Jerry's flavor (sold at the retailer), Berry Voluntary, to support the work of VolunteerMatch, which engages volunteers by pairing them up with projects that best meet their interests and expertise. Today, the group issued a taste-off challenge to Stephen Colbert.

Beyond the mere letter to producers and a YouTube taunt (below), the folks at VolunteerMatch actually did their best to curry favor with Colbert's own studio audience. In their words: "This challenge was presented today to the New York City studio audience of The Colbert Report as they waited to see the live taping of the program. They were given sample sizes of Ben & Jerry's Berry Voluntary."

In other words, they bum rushed the line outside of the Colbert taping.

"I challenge Stephen Colbert--man...
