The Diabolical and Clinical filmmaker Alistair Legrand passed away on March 7 after a battle with metastatic colorectal cancer. He was 41.

“Alistair bravely & mostly privately fought a long, hard, battle against stage four metastatic colorectal cancer after being diagnosed in May 2023,” his wife Shelley Legrand wrote on Instagram. “We’re all absolutely devastated at the loss of such a uniquely talented & loving part of our lives.”

Legrand made his feature directorial debut on 2015’s The Diabolical, a haunted house movie with a sci-fi twist starring Ali Larter. He followed it up with Clinical, a horror-thriller released by Netflix in 2017.

He co-wrote both films with his writing partner, Luke Harvis.

Legrand also helmed music videos for the likes of Bring Me the Horizon, Nate Ruess, and Beach House, fronted by his sister Victoria Legrand.

Legendary author Stephen King has been seeing his stories made into theatrical movies going way back to the '80s, and since then, it's never stopped. There's almost no end to King's novels and short stories which have had movie or TV adaptations based on them, with some even receiving multiple adaptations. It's very clear that people still love King's work now just as much as they did decades ago, as movies based on his work have proven to be massive hits at the box office. Now, the next movie to be made based on one of King's literary works will be an upcoming movie called Mile 81, which is based on King's 2011 novella of the same name. Mile 81, a Stephen King novella about a killer car, is another movie project on the growing docket of adaptations of the author’s work.

One may be forced to feign surprise when hyping the news that another Stephen King literary work – this time novella Mile 81 – is getting a movie adaptation.

Indeed, the entertainment industry’s “Kingaissance” that, for the past few years, has been flooding studio backlogs across the film and television industries, can add yet another entry to the list of developing projects with a film adaptation of Mile 81, reports Deadline. The King story, which first arrived as a 2011 novella, was later released in the author's 2015 The Bazaar of Bad Dreams short story collection.

Another day, another Stephen King project gets picked up for development. Alistair Legrand (Clinical) is set to direct an adaptation of King’s supernatural horror-thriller Mile 81, which is a 2011 novella. It’s said to be a mix of Stand By Me and Christine.

The story is set around "a remote, boarded-up rest stop, and the movie will follow 12-year-old Pete, his brother, and a group of strangers who must fight to survive as they’re hunted by a mysterious force.”

This is why I don’t stop at rest stops when I travel! The movie is being produced by Ross M. Dinerstein, who recently produced Netflix’s adaptation of King’s 1922, which turned out to be a great movie. He is also producing the John Grisham inspired docu-series The Innocent Man.

Exclusive: Alistair Legrand (Clinical) has been set to direct supernatural horror thriller Mile 81, based on the 2011 novella by Stephen King. Producer is Ross M. Dinerstein, who recently produced Netflix’s King adaptation 1922 and the streaming service’s John Grisham inspired docuseries The Innocent Man. Paradigm is handling sales, and introducing the project at the European Film Market in Berlin.

Script comes from Legrand and Luke Harvis (The Diabolical). Production is planned for fall 2019 with casting discussions underway.

Legrand previously directed horror pics The Diabolical with Ali Larter and Netflix’s Clinical starring Vinessa Shaw. Both titles were written by Legrand and Harvis, and produced by Dinerstein, whose other credits include The Pact, The Divide and The Nightmare.

While Hollywood savors The South by Southwest Film Festival as a testing ground for big comedies, one area of the fest that is definitely edgy, is its Midnighter section. Today, the 22nd annual SXSW announced 11 genre films, nine of which are world premieres, comprised of thrillers, sci-fi, dark comedies and horror as part of its Midnighters section as well as their shorts and music videos.

SXSW’s strength with absurd and Z grade fare is clearly evident in its Midnight short lineup where such kinky titles like Anal Juke (which is billed as the director’s “dream about my ex-boyfriend and the uneasy atmosphere of Japan after the earthquake are remixed”) and Kiss Kiss Fingerbang are receiving play slots. Or how about Crow Hand!!! which reads as a “Caw-tionary tale!”
