Some of them we’ll miss terribly, while others we may not quite as much. The year saw plenty of characters depart series, some in thoughtful and meaningful ways, others with satisfying conclusions to their arcs, others tragically, and many downright puzzling.

Grace Ryder – 9-1-1: Lone Star (Kevin Estrada/Fox)

Not only did 9-1-1 Lone Star fans have to reel from the news that the series’ fifth season would be its last one, but we also learned that Sierra McClain, who played beloved Grace Ryder, wouldn’t return for it.

It felt like an impossible feat to write out a character who was genuinely the heart of the series, and frankly, the final season has struggled with doing it convincingly.

Set in Austin, Texas, Fox's 9-1-1: Lone Star follows the firefighters and paramedics at Firehouse 126, led by Fire Captain Owen Strand (Rob Lowe) and Paramedic Captain Tommy Vega (Gina Torres). Strand relocated from New York City to Austin after the 126 experienced a terrible tragedy, losing all of their men except one -- Judd Ryder (Jim Parrack), who is married to former 9-1-1 dispatcher Grace Ryder (Sierra McClain). Strand also brought his son, T.K. Strand (Ronen Rubenstein), to Austin, and he joined the 126 first as a firefighter and then as a paramedic. Other members of the 126 include paramedic Nancy Gillian (Brianna Baker) and firefighters Mateo Chavez (Julian Works), Paul Strickland (Brian Michael Smith), and Marjan Marwani (Natacha Karam). Rounding out the main characters is Carlos Reyes (Rafael L. Silva), an Austin police officer turned Texas Ranger who is married to T.

Fans of 911: Lone Star are hopeful the characters may make their way to other 911 shows but there's some bad news on that front!

911: Lone Star fans have had a tricky time as of late. Season 4 ended in May 2023, with plans for Season 5 put off when the 2023 Hollywood strikes happened. When the strikes ended, rather than a shortened season, Fox decided to simply hold the show off until fall 2024. 

Then a wrinkle hit when Sierra McClain announced she was leaving the series with her character Grace written out and changing a storyline for Jim Parrack's Judd. Then Fox confirmed speculation that Season 5 would be the last one. 

The franchise will continue with the mothership 911 on ABC and there are plans for a spinoff. That has fans eager to know if any characters can jump to said spinoff. However, speaking to TVLine, co-showrunner Rashad Raisani said that may be beyond his control.

911: Lone Star fans were already upset to learn that Season 5 would be the last for the Fox spinoff. It got worse when it was announced Sierra McClain would not be returning for it. Her marriage to firefighter Judd (Jim Parrack) was one of the highlights of the show. It also made little sense narratively as Judd had just quit the 126 and was raising paralyzed son Wyatt (Jackson Pace).

9-1-1: Lone Star wrapped its five-season run by revealing that Chief Bridges (Alan Autry) killed Gabriel Reyes (Benito Martinez) and set up Ranger Campbell (Parker Young) to take the fall. Executive producer Rashad Raisani recently explained why Bridges was the perfect character to carry out the ultimate betrayal.

"We knew that the betrayal had to hit as close to home as possible because the person Carlos trusted the most would be the only person who could have kept it from him this long," Raisani told Screen Rant. "And frankly, we also wanted somebody of Alan Autry's gravitas. He was the only person capable of pulling the wool over Gabriel's eyes also."
