"Doctor Who" season 2, episode 5 -- titled "The Story & The Engine" -- continues the show's current trend of combining copious winks and nudges with genuinely heartfelt stories that are the cornerstone of showrunner Russell T Davies' tenure. This time, the 15th Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) finds himself in Lagos. There, his friend Omo's (Sule Rimi of "Andor" and "The Day of the Jackal" fame) barbershop has been taken over by the mysterious and hostile Barber and his accomplice, Abena. After the Doctor enters the shop and finds that he and several locals have been trapped inside and have to fuel the Barber's mysterious machines with their stories, the plot truly kicks in.

I remember him saying, 'Every episode is like a film - make it your own. Put your stamp on it.' That freedom to be expressive while still honoring the legacy of Doctor Who was amazing."

"The scale of the production is phenomenal," the director added. "Walking into Bad Wolf Studios and seeing the ambition behind the sets,...

‘The Day of the Jackal’ Renewed for Season 2 at Peacock and Sky
Image
The Peacock and Sky dramatic series “The Day of the Jackal” was renewed for a second season, the streamer and broadcaster announced Thursday.

The show’s success was “unusually strong” Carnival Films CEO Gareth Neame told TheWrap this month. The series is part of Neame’s strategic plan that includes launching series that are “expressly British but will have global appeal.” The formula worked when he sold “Downton Abbey” to NBCUniversal in 2008, though he admitted he “could not have anticipated” how successful that series would ultimately become.

Sky and Peacock announced the series was in production in 2023. Eddie Redmayne produced and starred in the first season. The show is based on the Frederick Forsyth thriller and subsequent award-winning 1973 film adaptation of the same name.

“While staying true to the DNA of the original story, this contemporary drama will delve deeper into the chameleon like ‘anti-hero’ at the heart of the story in a high octane,...

‘The Day of the Jackal’ Review: Eddie Redmayne Kills in Peacock’s Occasionally Gripping, Frequently Padded Game of Cat-and-Mouse
Image
The mountain lion that menaced Kim Bauer in the first season of Fox’s 24 was a feature, not a bug.

That ferocious feline, which probably still haunts Elisha Cuthbert’s dreams, was a proof of concept for how that boundary-breaking series could to extend its high-wire premise across 24 hours per season: Not everything could be an A-story or a B-story, but in Jack Bauer’s world, even the filler was fraught with tension.

Or at least it theoretically was. As even the most passionate fans will tell you, the detours were occasionally thrilling, occasionally ludicrously entertaining and sometimes just plain awful. But they served the purpose of elongating the excitement, and with 24, elongation was everything. Whatever pleasures the subsequent telefilm or two 12-part seasons provided, they made clear that a condensed 24 might be many things, but it wasn’t 24.

There wouldn’t have been room for a...

The Day Of The Jackal Review: Peacock's Propulsive Action Thriller Series Actually Refreshes The Genre
Image
Lashana Lynch and Eddie Redmayne make a compelling pair as the cat and mouse in The Day of the Jackal, the new TV show updating the novel by Frederick Forsyth and the 1973 movie. Redmayne plays the Jackal, the highly skilled assassin, with Lynch as an MI6 agent hot on his trail. It's hard to argue that there will always be a place for a well-crafted spy thriller on television, and while The Day of the Jackal wouldn't have had any trouble finding its audience, it pushes itself regardless. The series fulfills a niche that viewers have been waiting for.

Eddie Redmayne Drew Inspiration from David Bowie for Day of the Jackal
Image
Eddie Redmayne found major inspiration from an unlikely place when preparing for his captivating role as an elusive and lone assassin (the titular Jackal) in Peacocks new spy thriller, The Day of the Jackal: an iconic, chameleonic singer. There's a brilliant woman called Alexandra Reynolds, shes a dancer who I first worked with on The Theory of Everything. We worked on the different physicalities of Jackal to pin down who he was, because he is this vessel in some ways. He's so enigmatic," explained Redmayne.

And there was this brilliant interview found with David Bowie from the 70s, Redmayne went on to say in a recent MovieWeb interview, noting that the interview article showcased the singer in a such a different light than his typical glam stage persona. Its one of the rare times you see him being completely him, clothing-wise, in no makeup. Nothing. Drawing a comparison between...

Andor: Diego Luna Talks The Making Of Season 1’s Aldhani Arc In Behind-The-Scenes Featurette
Image
When the first season of Andor hit Disney+ in 2022, it was clear that there’d never been a Star Wars story like it before – a gritty, grounded, morally and politically complex espionage thriller that just happened to be set in the galaxy far, far away. And among it all came some of the most nail-biting setpieces in the entire saga, from the Ferrix uprising, to the Narkina 5 prison break – and, of course, the pulse-pounding Aldhani raid. In a brand new featurette from the upcoming 4K steelbook release of the series, Diego Luna looks back on the making of the Aldhani arc. Give it a watch here:

It’s always fascinating seeing how these sequences come together...
