Starting in 2008, Ip Man, the master of Wing Chun, has featured as the main character in a number of movies and a TV series. “Final Fight” presents the story of his last period, when he moved to Hong Kong from Foshan, following the victory of the Chinese Communist Party in the Chinese Civil War, since he was a police officer of the previous regime, the Kuomintang.

The film begins in 1949, upon his arrival in Hong Kong, where a sick and alone, 56 -year-old Ip Man (his wife and son had stayed in Foshan) starts teaching Wing Chun on the rooftop of a building that houses the hotel staff’s general association. He meets and accepts new students from every part of society, and his class consists of laborers, a lot of which are members of the labor movement, correctional officers, even policemen.

In this biopic, Donnie Yen is Ip Man, one of the earliest Wing Chun martial arts exponents and the man credited to have elevated its popularity in the early parts of the 20th century. Best known for his role as Bruce Lee’s first mentor, Ip Man is godlike amongst martial arts fans. As far as biopics goes, Ip Man isn’t really award-winning material. The picture takes plenty of liberties with the facts of the legendary practitioner of the Southern Chinese fighting style. It’s slightly exaggerated and fairly straightforward storytelling, but first and foremost, Ip Man is an excuse for Yen to demonstrate his newfound mastery of the Wing Chun style – and on that front, the film succeeds brilliantly.

It’s a rarity when we get a Hong Kong movie in Stateside theaters. A rarity still when that Hong Kong movie actually plays in a theater in a city other than the two coasts. I haven’t a clue if Herman Yau’s “Ip Man: The Final Battle” will be fighting it out in a theater near you, but you can always check your local listings and find out. If your town is known for its more artsy fare, then your chances are decent. If not? Well, there’s always VOD and Blu-ray, I guess. I've enjoyed all of the movies about Ip Man that have been made over the years, and now we have two new trailers for the latest movie called Ip Man: The Final Fight. The martial arts drama features Anthony Wong as an older Ip Man, and it takes place in the years after he has trained Bruce Lee. The movie looks awesome, and I wish I knew how fight like this! Wong looks like he kicks some major ass! Here's the synopsis:

2013 promises to be filled with lots of Martial Art movies and i have to say 2012 wasn’t the best year for it. The list that we have here include some great movies and we have high expectations to see some great choreography. Ip Man: Final Fight is the latest movie in production, but this is not part of the Donnie yen series, yet another spin off from the success of the movies like Ip Man – Legend Is Born.

The three leading actors in the movie are Anthony Wong, Gillian Chung and Jordan Chan, all which have studied Wing Chun before the filming of the movie. Anthony Wong will play an older version of Ip Man whilst Gillian Chung and Jordan Chan will play Yip’s students. The cast also includes Anita Yuen, Eric Tsang and Timmy Hung.

Also out this year is the movie Grand Masters, another movie based on the legend of Ip Man, which will star Tony Leung and of course Ip Man 3 – 3D, as Donnie Yen steps back in to play probably the biggest part in his career.

The movie will probably be released sometime in 2013.
