Amazon Expands Foray Into Sports Streaming in Australia, Adds Celebrity Touch (Exclusive)

Amazon’s Prime Video platform will broadcast the Australian Swimming Championships, in Adelaide next month, as part of a two-year deal with Swimming Australia. The company will use a roster of celebrity commentators to give a high profile to its continuing foray into the sports sector.

The deal with Swimming Australia is the first partnership Amazon has had in Australia for sports, other than sports documentaries.

The streaming giant has a patchwork of sportscasting in other territories – in India, for example it currently has a mixture women’s basketball and some cricket, having previously carried major tennis tournaments and English soccer. It finds itself in competition with incumbent free-tv channels, pay-tv operators for which live sports is a lifeblood, and a growing number of specialist sports streamers.

Mark Stevens quits Herald Sun after 14 years to join Seven News
Mark Stevens is joining Seven as chief football reporter.

The journalist calls time on 14 years as an Afl reporter at the Herald Sun to join the TV network, which yesterday announced the signing of Giaan Rooney as a weather presenter.

Stevens has also spent a time covering Afl on Triple M radio.

Director of Seven News Melbourne, Simon Pristel, said: “Mark is a great pick-up for the Seven News team. As a proven news-breaker with a wealth of experience and first-class contacts he will make a substantial contribution to our football coverage.

Stevens starts in his new role in the new year.

Giaan Rooney to present the weather over Christmas for Melbourne’s Seven News
Seven’s Melbourne station has hired Olympic swimmer Giaan Rooney to present the weather for Seven News over the festive period.

Rooney joins after a stint as a presenter on Nine, where among a variety of roles at the network she interviewed Australian swimmers poolside at the Olympics. She was also a holiday-period weather presenter for Nine’s Today show.

After presenting the weather over Christmas and New Year, she will front Seven’s Australian Open tennis coverage.

Rooney said in a press release: “The time is right to expand my horizons. Seven has so many great shows, it covers sport so well, there are so many opportunities. And what better way to start than the all-important weather reports during the festive season.”

Giaan Rooney has married Sam Levett. The 29-year-old Australian former Olympic swimmer, who got engaged to helicopter pilot Levett in February after a one year relationship, wore a custom-made Helen Manuell white gown to exchange vows with her husband-to-be at his family's farm in Euroa on Saturday (December 3). Giaan Rooney has revealed that she is excited about getting married. The Australian former champion swimmer, who announced her engagement to helicopter pilot Sam Levett earlier this year, said that they want to have a private wedding ceremony at some point in the near future.
