I'd be shocked if Untamed season 2 doesn't happen after this major milestone
Image
Netflix's new limited series Untamed starring Eric Bana continues to be one of the most surprising new releases on the platform. After the mystery thriller limited series premiered on July 17, the show shot straight to the No. 1 position on the daily top 10 most popular shows on Netflix, where it's remained a week later. But the show's debut ratings are even more cause for celebration.

On July 21, Netflix revealed that in its first four days of release, Untamed debuted with 24.6 million views, which translates to 119.5 million hours viewed. The series hit the peak of the weekly top 10 most-watched English-language shows on Netflix. Last week, the No. 1 show on the chart was The Sandman with 5.9 million views. That's a huge change!

Eric Bana was 'bitterly disappointed' about one aspect of filming Untamed
Image
The biggest show on Netflix in July 2025 is the suspenseful mystery limited series Untamed, which stars Eric Bana as a special agent for the National Parks Service. As Kyle Turner, Bana dives into the confident and fearless agent, who knows the Yosemite National Park grounds like the back of his hand. That knowledge comes in handy when a mysterious death unravels long-held park secrets.

Even though the show takes place in Yosemite National Park in California, Untamed wasn't filmed there. Rather, the cast and crew brought the beautiful, lush green scenery to life in British Columbia. But while filming the Netflix original series, Bana admits that he was "bitterly disappointed" by one particular aspect about filming on location in the Canadian wilderness.

Untamed Season 2 Future Is Promising, Creator Hints At One Direction For Netflix's Hit Crime Series
Image
Netflix's Untamed could have a long future on the platform. Led by executive producer and leading man Eric Bana (Kyle Turner), the show features Sam Neill (Paul Souter), Lily Santiago (Naya Vasquez), and Rosemarie DeWitt (Jill Bodwin). They all star as leading characters in a show that focuses on a murder mystery set in the heart of Yosemite National Park.

While most murder mysteries feature standard police officers, Untamed stars the Isb, the investigative arm of the National Parks. As a consequence, its stars are liable to be moved to any location within the National Park system, ranging from Maine to Alaska to the very tip of Florida.

The six-episode show was intended as a miniseries, but there is still a chance for a season 2 renewal, and that range is why. In an interview with TV Insider, Bana discussed the possibility of further explorations of the National Parks. While...

Eric Bana on ‘Untamed,’ the Finale’s ‘Great…Twist’ and the Possibility of a Season 2
Image
Spoiler Alert: This interview contains major spoilers from “Untamed,” now streaming on Netflix.

Eric Bana wouldn’t mind a change of pace in his more than 30-year career.

Known for high-stakes drama and action movies such as “Black Hawk Down,” “Troy,” “Hulk” and “Munich,” most don’t know — or have forgotten — that the 56-year-old actor started in comedy.

Along with starring in the sketch comedy series “Full Frontal” in the mid-1990s in his native Australia, he also hosted a short-lived talk show, “The Eric Bana Show Live.”

“Most of what I get sent is quite dark and dramatic, and I’ve really enjoyed doing the lighter stuff when it comes along,” Bana tells me during an appearance on the “Just for Variety” podcast. “So it would be fun to do more lighthearted stuff for sure, but it doesn’t grow on trees on my desk. There’s a lot of darkness on my desk.

‘Untamed’: Lily Santiago & Wilson Bethel Talk ‘Exhausting’ Mine Sequence & Deleted Scenes

A big turning point on Untamed for Kyle Turner (Eric Bana) and the newest park ranger, Naya Vasquez (Lily Santiago), is when he saves her when she’s trapped in a mine during their investigation into the death of Jane Doe. “That’s when we first see that he realized he really cares about her as a character and that also that they become real true partners at that moment,” coshowrunner Elle Smith tells TV Insider. Filming those scenes was “an exciting challenge,” shares Santiago. “Mark [L. Smith, co-showrunner] couldn’t even be there that day. He was like, ‘This is too claustrophobic.’ It was a very long, exhausting day, but I was so lucky to have such incredible support from the crew, the director, the showrunners, Eric. Untamed (TV Mini Series 2025) ‘Netflix’ Recap & Ending Explained – Who Killed Lucy Cook?
Image
Created by Mark L. Smith and Elle Smith, “Untamed” (TV Mini Series 2025) diligently checks off the noir-ish modern detective mystery tropes. Barring an electrifying opening scene, it does not stand apart as a police procedural. What the Netflix mini-series does excel at, and thus significantly elevates its status, is exalting its unique setting—a murder mystery at Yosemite National Park. Boosted by a solid cast, which is led by an earnestly committed Eric Bana, the show astutely takes the chance to shine in Yosemite National Park’s reflected glory. With its mountains, greenery, and fauna, the National Park’s towering presence becomes a pivotal character in the story, not just a backdrop. And it works wonders for the mini-series. So much so, we would not mind a second instalment.

Aside from the central murder mystery, Turner and his ex-wife, Jill (DeWitt), are still dealing with the death of their son years prior, including the secrets linked to his fate.

‘Untamed’ Review: Eric Bana Squanders Grand Terrain in Netflix’s Tedious, Yosemite-Set Mystery
Image
Early in their investigation into the death of an unidentified woman, Isb officer Kyle Turner (Eric Bana) and park ranger Naya Vasquez (Lily Santiago) discover a few clues in an eerie abandoned shed. There’s a bloody rope laying on the floor, a footprint on the door, and fresh carvings in the rickety wooden walls. Kyle bags the evidence, photographs the etchings, and the two exchange theories about what may have happened here. Then, as Naya heads back outside, a bear slams into the door. Naya falls down as the bear bangs on the thin wood separating it from its prey, roaring in sudden, vicious fury. She scrambles for her sidearm, but Kyle already has gun out. He fires two shots into the air, and the bear runs off.

Not long after that random disturbance, Kyle reminds his rookie colleague that her new gig isn’t like any work she did in the big city.

Netflix Untamed episode 3 recap: Naya's dangerous mission for answers
Image
This post contains spoilers from Untamed episode 3 from this point forward.

In the second episode of Untamed, while Turner was rocked by the death of Teddy the bait shop kid, Naya was able to finally identify Jane Doe as Lucy Cook. Untamed episode 3 opens with a flashback to a young Lucy painting rocks with her mother, Maggie, who seems to be fighting cancer. They talk about El-o'-win, but Lucy's mom suddenly begins bleeding and walks back to their house. Lucy stays behind, but an unidentified man walks up behind her. She waves.

Back in present day, Naya explains to Souter and Turner that Lucy Cook was seven years old when she was reported missing from her father's home inside the park in July 2010. Turner had previously worked on her disappearance case. At the time, everyone thought that her father, Rory, had killed her. She lived with him after Maggie lost her battle with cancer.

'Untamed': New Netflix Crime Thriller Series First Reviews Praise Gripping Mystery
Image
Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan has become a franchise all his own, with every streamer now looking to replicate the same success as Paramount. Well, Netflix may have gotten one step closer to doing just that, with the popular streamer's new crime thriller series, which has been likened to the gritty, sweeping drama of Yellowstone, as well as the same neo-western sensibilities demonstrated in the filmmaker’s underrated Wind River, which has now debuted with a killer Rotten Tomatoes score following the first reviews.

The series is titled Untamed and finds Hulk and The Dry star Eric Bana taking the lead in this character-driven mystery-thriller, which follows a special agent for the National Parks Service who works to enforce human law in nature’s vast wilderness. Suddenly, the investigation of a brutal death sends him down a path that will force him to face the dark secrets within the park, and in his own past.

‘Untamed’ Review: Eric Bana Is Excellent in Netflix’s Moody Yosemite Mystery
Image
If you think you’ve seen “Untamed” before, you haven’t.

Sure, it has the familiar ingredients — grief, guilt and a secret buried beneath the pines — but Netflix’s moody mystery miniseries grabs your attention with a grim murder and keeps you hooked as its six episodes unfold, each ending on a cliffhanger that practically dares you not to hit “Next Episode.”

In an era saturated with high-concept thrillers and over-elaborate puzzle boxes, “Untamed” takes a slower, more considered route. Emotional authenticity and character-driven storytelling take precedence over procedural gimmicks or rapid-fire twists.

Oh, and it stars Eric Bana — reminding us why he is one of the great underappreciated talents of his generation.

The story follows Kyle Turner (Bana), a veteran National Parks agent. His carefully maintained sense of order begins to unravel when a new case reopens old wounds. Turner’s journey is as much inward as outward — a...

When Is Untamed Season 2 Releasing on Netflix?
Image
July has been quite an interesting month for Netflix, releasing several films and TV series across different genres. Works like Virgin River are already getting a Season 8 renewal, whereas the German sci-fi, Brick, was praised for its unique plot. Adding to this ever-growing collection of Netflix Originals is its limited series, Untamed, which has left us mesmerized, flaunting how a murder mystery is made.

With Eric Bana in the lead, the 6-episode show has been an absolute gem of a watch. However, this has also brought up the question of whether the show was good enough to get renewed for another season. After all, viewers would love to explore other chapters of the thriller series.

Is Untamed Fated for a Season 2 Renewal?

Mark L. Smith and Elle Smith’s co-created work, Untamed, has taken Netflix by storm, engrossing them in a deep-rooted, mysterious murder of a young woman. Everyone thought...

Untamed TV Review: Eric Bana leads the beautiful but familiar procedural set in Yosemite National Park
Image
Plot: A character-driven mystery-thriller that follows Kyle Turner, a special agent for the National Parks Service who works to enforce human law in nature’s vast wilderness. The investigation of a brutal death sends Turner on a collision course with the dark secrets within the park, and in his own past.

Review: Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone franchise has cornered the market on contemporary Western series. However, with the expansion into cop shows with Y: Marshals, the floodgates have opened for every streaming service and studio to try their hands at developing similar projects. While many of these shows will be derivative or formulaic, it takes an exceptional talent to try and deliver something that clicks with audiences like Sheridan’s flagship series did. Mark L. Smith and Elle Smith deliver Untamed, a solid drama set in the vast beauty of Yosemite National Park that works well thanks to being a...

Netflix Untamed episode 1 recap: Turner investigates Jane Doe's death
Image
This post contains spoilers from Untamed episode 1 from this point forward.

The suspenseful mystery limited series Untamed made its premiere on Netflix on July 16, and the series doesn't waste a minute before dropping us into the action. After showing us the gorgeous scenery of the Yosemite National Park, a chilling scene finds two climbers scaling a mountain. As they make their way up, a dead woman's body falls from the top of the mountain and gets tangled up in their ropes, leaving their lives on the line, too.

National Parks Service Investigative Services Branch agent Kyle Turner (Eric Bana) searches the forest with his young son when he receives the call about the climbing incident. He arrives on the scene, but he's not particularly well regarded by the rangers below him, though new ranger Naya Vasquez (Lily Santiago) seems intrigued. Turner immediately begins asking questions about the case. He's no-nonsense...

Eric Bana Is Outstanding in Netflix’s Gripping Mystery Thriller ‘Untamed’: TV Review
Image
Detective work requires meticulous attention to detail, regardless of the setting. However, when a crime occurs amid one million acres of wilderness, investigations can take on a life of their own. Written by Mark L. Smith and Elle Smith, Netflix’s new mystery-thriller, “Untamed,” is an engrossing ride that encompasses secrets, deep-seated wounds and one tenacious investigator’s attempt to lay it all bare. Set in the picturesque Yosemite National Park, the limited series follows Kyle Turner (an exceptional Eric Bana), a special agent for the National Park Service Investigative Services Branch (Isb). After a body is discovered in the park, Turner embarks on a ruthless quest to determine what happened. Gutting and unnerving, “Untamed” is an assessment of the human condition, showcasing just how animalistic we can be when backed into corners.

“Untamed” opens in the vast wilderness and lush greens of Yosemite. Two young men are seen climbing...

Untamed Review — A Thrilling Mystery Series You Don’t Want to Miss
Image
Untamed is the latest in the massive and ever-growing collection of Netflix limited series. The streaming giant seems to have a “throw everything at the wall and see what sticks” approach, with quality all across the spectrum. On the backs of excellent writing and a strong cast, this is one of their better results.

When an unidentified young woman falls off a cliff to her death at Yosemite National Park, Kyle Turner (Eric Bana) is called in to investigate as a special agent for the National Parks Service Investigative Services Branch. While it at first appears to be a tragic accident, Turner finds evidence that suggests the possibility of something more sinister. His investigation threatens to bring dark, long-held secrets to the surface, secrets both from the park and Turner’s own past.

‘Untamed’ Review: Eric Bana and Lily Santiago Anchor Netflix’s Intriguing but Rushed Yosemite-Set Mystery
Image
In the premiere of Netflix’s Untamed, Eric Bana’s Kyle Turner arrives at a pivotal crime scene on horseback, visage grizzled and posture rigid against the backdrop of British Columbia impersonating Yosemite National Park.

With a combination of snark and reverence, one of the park rangers refers to Turner as “Gary Fucking Cooper,” leaving little doubt of creators Mark L. Smith and Elle Smith’s aspirations.

Despite being filmed primarily in Canada and boasting an Australian as its taciturn leading man (and a Kiwi as his kindly mentor), Untamed wants to be a throwback slice of Western-infused Americana, self-consciously going after the audience that has made Yellowstone and its various offshoots into one of TV’s most successful franchises.

Although Netflix is billing it as a limited series, Untamed is far from inherently close-ended. It’s the sort of tightly — often too tightly — constructed six-episode potboiler with epic frontier...
