‘Mr. Burton’ Review: Harry Lawtey Plays the Pride of Wales, and Toby Jones the Man Who Made Him, in a Gentle Showbiz Origin Story
Image
Richard Burton never got around to writing an official set of memoirs before his untimely, alcohol-hastened death in 1984, though the star’s posthumously published diaries are among the great volumes of their kind in the showbiz library: sometimes brutally candid about himself, often savagely catty about others, and reflective of a wry, wicked mind behind the boorish antics that kept him in the headlines. There’s little of that wit or mischief to be found in Marc Evans’ quiet, earnestly soft-hearted biopic “Mr. Burton,” though that discrepancy is at least partly the point.

Dramatizing the Welshman’s formative early years as an actor, from his rough working-class adolescence to the brink of celebrity in his mid-twenties, Evans’ film intends to show us an unformed boy scarcely recognizable as the imposing, burgundy-voiced lead of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” and “Look Back in Anger,” right down to his unfamiliar childhood name: Richie Jenkins.

Beck Plays Surprise Set at Newport Folk Festival, Covers Bob Dylan’s “Maggie’s Farm”: Watch
Image
The 65th Newport Folk Festival kicked off Frinday, and along with performances by Adrianne Lenker, Wednesday, Muna, and more, festival-goers were treated to a surprise set by Beck.

Taking the Quad Stage in the afternoon alongside a full band, Beck delivered a short set consisting mostly of covers of classic American songs paying tribute to the festival’s musical roots, including renditions of Jimmie Rodgers’ “Waiting for a Train,” Blind Willie Johnson’s “God Moves on the Water,” and the traditionals “John Hardy” and “Stagger Lee.” He also played a few ‘60s era songs, including Fred Neil’s “The Other Side of This Life” and, in a classic Newport move, Bob Dylan’s “Maggie’s Farm.”

Closing out the performance, Beck played a handful of his own songs, including “The Golden Age,” “One Foot in the Grave,” and the set-closer, “Loser.” Check out videos of the performance below.

Tyla Wears a Balmain Gown Made of Sculpted Sand for Her First Met Gala
Image
“Water” singer Tyla arrived in sand for her first-ever Met Gala red carpet.

Working with stylist Katie Qian, the South African singer wore a custom sculpted Balmain gown that represented “the sands of time,” she told La La Anthony on the red carpet. “We really wanted something out of the box for this year, it’s my first time at the Met.”

The Grammy-winning artist paired her Dune-esque dress with water-inspired jewelry by John Hardy, including yellow gold earrings with aquamarine, yellow diamond and blue topaz; and two yellow gold pave rings. She accessorized a simple gold necklace and an oversized hourglass clutch, while her beauty look featured a cat eyeliner and a dusting of sand on her left shoulder. Her nails featured 3D chain embellishments that mimicked dripping sand.

“It feels amazing, I’m so excited to go inside and see all of the pictures, then go home.

Josh Lucas on Spending a Year in Bali With His Family and Learning to Construct a Building from Bamboo
Image
In 2014, my son’s mother and I took our 3-year-old Noah to Bali. I had judged a film contest with Ihg Hotels and they compensated me with points to use at any of their resorts.

After a while at their lovely InterContinental Bali on Jimbaran Bay at the southern tip of Bali, we yearned for a more offbeat jungle experience and discovered through Airbnb the astounding Green Village Bali, a sustainably built housing community near Ubud.

Before we even checked in, they assumed we were there to see Green School Bali, which we had never heard of. A quick, deep jungle walk later we entered into a clearing where massive twisted bamboo buildings poked through the trees like giant foraging dinosaurs. A small group was gathered with designer John Hardy, the school’s creator, who was about to start a rare personal tour of his school.

It was impossible not...

‘Archives Vol. 1: The Early Years (1963-1967)’ Takes Us Back to Joni Mitchell’s Young Folkie Days
Image
On a fairly regular basis, Joni Mitchell’s official Twitter feed posts vintage photos of the genre-defining singer-songwriter. A few weeks back, up popped one of the most surprising—a shot of a fairly glam Mitchell and her former manager and label head David Geffen happily partying at Studio 54 in the late Seventies. It was a just-for-fun tweet, but also a trenchant reminder that Mitchell has never been predictable. She’s long shunned the cliches of her profession, and that’s also true of the journey heard in The Early Years...

John Hardy
Looking for some holiday style inspiration? You’re in luck: Julianne Moore, Camila Cabello and Diana Agron are serving some up thanks to their brand new ad campaigns with John Hardy, Guess and La Ligne, respectively.

As the star of John Hardy‘s new “Made for Legends” campaign, Moore, 56, poses seemingly topless, covering her chest with stacks of John Hardy silver and gold bracelets and rings on her hands and wrists. (And the wind machine was clearly in full effect.

“Jewelry in particular can be very emotional because often it’s given as a gift, whether to yourself or from a loved one.
