“They Can’T Scream” is a new horror feature film directed by Orange Cavalcante da Silva and produced by Vindicta Films. It is an Argentine-Brazilian co-production.

“The story is about a young biologist who travels with a few colleagues to the Amazonian rainforest in search of medicinal herbs for their research works. With the help of a local guide, they get into the rainforest on a ship. During the voyage the scientists find some people practicing zoophilia to a freshwater dolphin, known as ‘boto cor de rosa’. The scientists, horrified at the situation, tried to stop the act, without imagining that their lives were hanging by a thread.”

This week saw the North American premiere of Rites of Love and Math, the film by Berkeley mathematician Ed Frenkel. After receiving complaints about the trailer, which features both formulae and naked female flesh, Berkeley's mathematical sciences research institute decided to withdraw its support for the film.

This is not the greatest smackdown in the history of mathematics – the Newton-Leibniz debate over who invented the calculus ranks a tad higher – but it may surprise you that it is not even the first controversy involving mathematics and sex. While you may not have realised it when you were studying for your algebra finals, mathematics and sex have come together often.

Another week in October, another bounty crop of horror DVDs and Blu-rays. This week we have home entertainment from recent theatrical releases of nightmares of the mind as well as re-releases of classic and campy horror, all with boatloads of extras.

Then there are other horror titles that are being re-released on Blu-ray or in packs for double dipping. On top of that, horror offerings from Asia, past seasons of TV shows, manga, novels, and even video games are all vying for our pocketbooks. And we still have four more weeks of October to go.

At the American Cinematheque's Recent Spanish Cinema series last year, de la Iglesia's thriller "The Oxford Murders" was the lone English-language film shown, serving as a linguistic break from Goya winners like Jose Luis Cuerda's "The Blind Sunflowers" and Agustín Díaz Yanes' "Just Walking."

The film's also a departure from the wild comedies de la Iglesia has become known for, like the cutthroat salesman competition comedy "El Crimen Ferpecto" and the theme park-set spaghetti western "800 Bullets." (If you haven't seen either, we won't be offended if you run out to rent them now.)

Thanks to the questionable state of "Oxford"'s one-time American distributor ThinkFilm, the screening was a rare opportunity to see the Elijah Wood-John Hurt thriller on a U.S. big screen -- up until now.

It quickly becomes clear that this is the first in a series of murders, all of which are announced by the murderer with strange symbols.
