Eric Benét Is Making New Hits and Living His Best Life
Image
Eric Benét and I might be cousins. In any case, there’s a possibility our ancestors once walked on the same plantation — at least, that’s what the star, full name Eric Benét Jordan, half-jokingly tells me when we meet in the lounge of a New York hotel in late April. “It’s dope, right?” he says after pointing out our shared last name. “We probably are, we probably are.”

At 58 years old, Benét has both wisdom and jokes in his nature. TikTokers can catch one of the many skits...

Taylor Swift’s Recording Engineer Praises Superstar Singer’s “One of a Kind” Work Ethic, Calls Rerecords “An Incredible Engineering Challenge”

The nonprofit We Are Moving the Needle presented the Resonator Awards on Tuesday night, an inaugural celebration designed to spotlight women in the music business in a push for creating a more inclusive industry. Naturally, the biggest name in the game received a shout-out from the podium.

Two of Taylor Swift’s close collaborators — producer Jack Antonoff and mixer and recording engineer Laura Sisk — hit the stage inside Beauty & Essex in Hollywood. Antonoff had the honor of presenting the Exceptional Ears Award to Sisk, a three-time Grammy winner who has also worked with Lana Del Rey, Lorde, St. Vincent and Florence + the Machine.

Antonoff kicked off his tribute by detailing that he’s known Sisk for more than a decade. “She’s absolutely fucking incredible,” said Antonoff, one of two speakers from the podium who noted how loudly distracting the event’s kitchen staff was during the program. “I met Laura 12 or 13 years ago,...

Adam Blackstone Is a Musical Multihyphenate Who Is His Own Competition
Image
It’s 2003 and Jay-Z is planning a farewell concert at Madison Square Garden to celebrate his retirement from music.

But his bass player is unavailable. Adam Blackstone, a jack-of-all-trades who plays bass, drums, piano, organ, tuba and sousaphone — and is also a songwriter, producer, composer and everything else under the musical sun — is more than ready to step in.

Twenty years later, Blackstone, now 40, is still working closely with Jay-Z; both are Emmy winners for last year’s hip-hop-heavy Super Bowl halftime show. And the musician who has helped everyone from Rihanna to Justin Timberlake shine is stepping into his own limelight.

Rihanna performed during the Super Bowl Lvii halftime show in February.

After winning an Emmy in 2022 for music direction, Blackstone is nominated again. This time, however, he’s a double nominee. Not only is he competing for his work on Rihanna’s explosive Super Bowl performance (a nom...

Kelly Clarkson Delivers Breezy Rendition of Billy Joel’s ‘My Life’

While performing her rendition of Billy Joel’s “My Life” on The Kelly Clarkson Show, the singer sends a knowing wink toward the camera. It punctuates the lyric, “I don’t need you to worry for me, ’cause I’m alright.” But as goes for most Kellyoke performances, the only person who should really be worried is the original musician who is about to be out-sung by the queen of karaoke.

“My Life” is the latest in a string of Clarkson covers performed with her in-house instrumentalists My Band Y’all.

Grammys 2022: Lady Gaga, Tony Bennett, and more could join list of artists who have won for cover songs
Image
When looking at Grammy nominations for 2022, you might notice that there are a few cover songs nominated. As per Grammy rules, a cover can only be submitted in a performance category or in an arrangement category; they’re not eligible for songwriting since they were written in a previous eligibility period, or sometimes before the Grammys were even created. This year I think three covers seem to be in a good position to win: Jason Isbell’s “All I Do is Drive,” Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga’s “I Get a Kick Out of You,” and Chris Cornell’s “Nothing Compares 2 U.” But just how common is it for covers to prevail?

Country is one of the fields with the most covers winning. A few of the most recent wins have included “Gentle On My Mind” by The Band Perry (originally performed by John Hartford), “Wagon Wheel” by Darius Rucker...

An Indie Artist Covered Corinne Bailey Rae — and Scored a Record Deal
Image
20-year-old Jack Rutter has an alter ego. The Salt Lake City native moonlights as Ritt Momney — a musical project that started out as an indie rock band with high-school friends, before its other members dispersed to follow Mormon missions. As a solo artist, Rutter turned inward to record a 13-song LP, Her and All of My Friends, which candidly examines melancholia and his own detachment from Mormon culture.

Rutter later released a reimagined version of Corinne Bailey Rae’s bubbly 2006 hit single “Put Your Records On” — which has taken off recently on TikTok.

Image
The Focus Features musical dramedy The High Note is looking to hit exactly that as it lands on-demand starting today. Directed by Late Night‘s Nisha Ganatra from a script by Flora Greeson, the film was originally set to hit theaters on May 8 but, like many films, the film adapted and shifted to a digital. However, with theaters slowly opening their doors, the film will be singing its way to approximately 100 theaters — most of the drive-in theaters.

Set in the world of the Los Angeles music scene, The High Note follows singing superstar diva Grace Davis (Tracee Ellis Ross) and her overworked personal assistant Maggie (Dakota Johnson) who has dreams of becoming a music producer. With Lewis Capaldi’s ‘Someone You Loved’ rising on the charts, will he be the next Ed Sheeran at the Grammys?
Lewis Capaldi
Lewis Capaldi has steadily been climbing up the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart with his breakthrough hit “Someone You Loved” (watch the video above), and on the chart dated September 28 it reached the top five for the first time, climbing from number-nine to number-four. Can the sensitive 22-year-old Scotsman — and second cousin of “Doctor Who” actor Peter Capaldi — next follow in the Grammy footsteps of Ed Sheeran?

Sheeran was also a modest British balladeer before rising to international superstardom. His debut single “The A Team,” about a young woman struggling with drug addiction, earned him one Grammy nomination in 2013, but it was a big one: a surprise bid for Song of the Year. Since then he has won that category (for “Thinking Out Loud” in 2016), one of four Grammys he has won to date, and he has become a reliable hit-maker.

Patty Griffin in Elizabethtown (2005)
Patty Griffin turns Tom Waits’ elegiac, cinematic “Ruby’s Arms” into a sparse, somehow even more heartbreaking piano ballad for a new compilation, Come On Up to the House: Women Sing Waits. She adds a minute to the runtime of the original song, which appeared on Waits’ 1980 album Heartattack and Vine, and allows her voice to ache all over the lyrics in a way that shows a new depth to the lyrics, contrasting Waits’ gruff original.

The tribute album, due out November 22nd, features covers of Waits’ song performed by women,...

Taylor Swift at an event for 2019 Golden Globe Awards (2019)
Taylor Swift Basically Shared Her Throwback Playlist, and It Includes Songs For “Bad Breakups”
Taylor Swift at an event for 2019 Golden Globe Awards (2019)
Taylor Swift rarely participates in interviews anymore, so when she sits down to share her thoughts, you know fans are going to listen. In the midst of speculation about her possible seventh album, the 29-year-old singer penned a touching essay about the power of music for Elle UK's April issue, which will be released on March 7. She opened up about the songs that have impacted her life as she's grown up, and coincidentally, we've added them all to our "throwback" playlist! Here are a few of Taylor's nostalgic picks:

"Cowboy Take Me Away" by the Dixie Chicks: "I instantly recall the feeling of being 12 years old, sitting in a little wood-paneled room in my family home in Pennsylvania. I'm clutching a guitar and learning to play the chords and sing the words at the same time, rehearsing for a gig at a coffee house." "I Write Sins Not Tragedies" by Panic!

Meet Alina Baraz, the Serene Singer Who Went From Isolation to Streaming Stardom
Alina Baraz has released just two EPs of her feathery, crazily calm music — like R&B buried under a layer of permafrost — but hasn’t produced anything that could be considered a mainstream hit. And yet she has amassed over 1.2 billion streams, many more than artists who are multiple albums into major label careers. Her success is one of the clearest signs of the chasm that still separates the streaming-verse and the world of old-school commercial pop.

To hear her tell it, Baraz was a star before she was a singer.

The Voice Recap: Who Packed a Punch With Their Knockout Performance?
Your days are numbered, Jaron Strom. The Voice on Monday began its Season 14 Knockouts, aka the rounds designed to discharge the last of the coaches’ cannon fodder prior to the Playoffs. So, before sitting down and tuning in, I was thinking that Jaron would soon be jettisoned from Team Blake, Gary Edwards would be dropped from Team Adam, Dallas Caroline’s nerves would at last be settled by her elimination from Team Alicia, and Jamella would get cut from Team Kelly (probably in a montage like both her Blind Audition and her Battle, poor thing!). Who actually got knocked out when past winners Jordan Smith,...

Taylor Swift and Zayn Malik Unveil Sultry 'Fifty Shades Darker' Music Video
Zayn Malik
We're sittin' eyes wide open and we've got one thing stuck in our minds.

That's right, Taylor Swift and Zayn Malik's highly-anticipated new music video for the Fifty Shades Darker track, "I Don't Wanna Live Forever," has dropped -- and we've got it on repeat.

In the super seductive video, Taylor and Zayn play celebrities at a Fifty Shades-style soiree, though they both seem more focused on their own heartbreak than the crowd of masked strangers. A montage of shadowy scenes show both stars walking, separately, through a hotel lobby and to their individual rooms -- which they trash in a frenzy of passionate remorse.

While the music video, which was filmed at at London's historic St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel and directed by Grant Singer, is nowhere near as risqué as the film the song was written for, Taylor's dark red shimmering lipstick and lacy, low-cut top give off a much more mature vibe than the...
