Exclusive: FilmNation Entertainment’s production label Infrared is lining up would-be action franchise-starter Painter, which will star rising U.S. actress Amber Midthunder alongside Alan Ritchson (Reacher).

Painter is written by Derek Kolstad (John Wick) and is set to be directed by Logan, Avatar and Road House stunt co-ordinator Garrett Warren, the well known stunt specialist in Hollywood who is now turning to directing.

FilmNation will launch sales on the project at next week’s American Film Market (AFM) in Las Vegas where it will be one of the hot packages.

Painter centers on a young woman, trained from a young age, who must employ every skill in her arsenal to rescue her father after he is kidnapped.

Pic is produced by Ritchson, Drew Simon (Infrared), Kolstad, Josh Adler (Circle of Confusion), and Dan Spilo (Industry Entertainment). Infrared is financing.

Writer-director Rod Blackhurst has wrapped production in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on horror film “Dolly.”

Blackhurst is the Emmy and Critics Choice nominated director and producer of Netflix original documentary “Amanda Knox” and the Tribeca Festival audience award-winning “Here Alone.” “Dolly” follows his acclaimed crime-thriller “Blood for Dust,” which premiered at Tribeca and won the narrative competition award at San Diego.

“Dolly,” described by the filmmakers as a blend of New French Extremity and 1970s American horror, follows Macy, a young woman abducted by a deranged, monster-like figure who wants to raise her as their child.

The cast includes Fabianne Therese (“John Dies at the End”), Seann William Scott (“American Pie”), Ethan Suplee (“Babylon”), Russ Tiller (“Blood for Dust”) and Michalina Scorzelli (“Shoplifters of the World”). The film also introduces current Nwa TV Champion Max the Impaler, aka The Non-Binary Nightmare, in the titular role of Dolly.

ABC is headed to the highest court in the land with its latest piece of development.

The network has ordered a pilot for a drama titled Judgement, from sibling studio 20th Television and writer Joey Falco (The CW’s Charmed). The self-described legal soap will center on a potential Supreme Court justice in the near future — while also exploring the candidate’s complicated present-day life.

The project’s logline reads, “Fifteen years from now, a woman being vetted for a Supreme Court seat recounts her experience at a prominent D.C. law firm in 2023, where the only thing more controversial than the cases was her messy love life, caught between two feuding brothers. The cast for Academy Award-winner Emerald Fennell’s upcoming film “Saltburn” is shaping up with the addition of Oscar nominee Richard E. Grant, Archie Madekwe and Alison Oliver. The trio join previously announced stars Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi and Rosamund Pike in the MRC Film and Amazon Studios project.

Following her best picture-nominated feature directorial debut “Promising Young Woman,” Fennell wrote and is directing “Saltburn,” which is described as a “story of obsession” with other plot details kept under wraps. Production is currently underway in the U.K.

Variety exclusively announced plans for the film in January, noting that Fennell would also produce the project alongside LuckyChap Entertainment’s Josey McNamara, Tom Ackerley and Margot Robbie. Prime Video landed worldwide streaming rights to “Saltburn,” which will also be released in theaters by Amazon Studios and MGM, and then stream on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.

“Saltburn,” the second feature film from writer-director Emerald Fennell, has added Richard E. Grant, Alison Oliver and Archie Madekwe to its cast.

The trio joins previously announced stars Jacob Elordi, Rosamund Pike and Barry Keoghan. Plot details are being kept under wraps, with the official description calling it “a story of obsession.”

“Saltburn” is Fennell’s follow-up to “Promising Young Woman,” for which she won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Byron Bowers, Josiah Cross, Mike Epps, Noah Jupe, and Pruitt Taylor Vince are the latest additions to the series. They join previously announced cast members Natalie Portman, ’Lan Noel, Mikey Madison and Brett Gelman, as well as Moses Ingram.

The untitled series was picked up to series at Apple in February, with Douglas’ casting being announced at that time. The show is based on the book “A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, and the Birth of America” by Stacy Schiff. The eight-episode drama explores the true story of one of the greatest gambles of Benjamin Franklin’s career. At age 70, without any diplomatic training, Franklin convinced France – an absolute monarchy – to underwrite America’s experiment in democracy. Production on the series is now underway.

Jupe will star as Temple Franklin, Benjamin’s grandson. The other new cast members are:

The festival runs from February 23 to March 10, and the lineup focuses heavily on environmental issues. Exclusive: Danny McBride’s Rough House Pictures is partnering with Spire Animation Studios to develop the animated feature, Trouble.

Pic centers on Jax, a 13-year-old who gets in trouble with his family, and is swept into a parallel reality known as the World of Trouble. Embarking on a whimsical adventure, within this bizarre and fantastic world of chaotic adolescence, he makes new friends, reflects on his character and learns the value of self-forgiveness, all while trying to figure out how to get out of trouble, and get back home.

McBride and Spire Animation Studios Cco Brad Lewis created the original story for Trouble, with Kevin Barnett and Chris Pappas writing the script. The film will be executive produced by Spire’s P.J. Gunsagar, along with Rough House Pictures’ Brandon James. Casting announcements have yet to be made.

The Untitled Quinta Brunson pilot (fka Harrity Elementary) follows a group of teachers brought together in a public school simply because they love teaching. They will rely on one another to make it through the day and find a way to counteract the school district’s bullsh*t attitude toward educating children.

Brunson stars as Janine, an optimistic new second-grade teacher with much to learn. Williams plays Gregory, a substitute-turned-permanent teacher at the school. James is Ava, the school’s spirited new principal.

Lionsgate’s Grindstone Entertainment Group has acquired the North American rights to Cicada 3301. The comedy-thriller marks the feature directorial debut of Alan Ritchson, who co-wrote the script with Joshua Montcalm. Lionsgate Home Entertainment is set to distribute the film digitally across multiple platforms on a to-be-determined date.

According to the official synopsis, Cicada 3301 follows disenfranchised hacker savant, Connor Black (Jack Kesy), his affable best friend, Avi Berkowitz (Ron Funches) and a cunning librarian (Conor Leslie), who find themselves over their heads when forced to compete in a sophisticated dark web secret society’s global recruitment game. Ritchson also stars in the film as the inept antagonist Nsa Agent Carver along with industry veteran Andreas Apergis (Riddick).

“I’ve been a fan of Alan’s acting for a long time, and now, after seeing Cicada 3301, I’m equally impressed by his chops as a director,” said Grindstone Entertainment Group’s Ryan Black.

Amazon Studios, Skydance TV and Paramount TV Studios have found their Jack Reacher. Alan Ritchson (Titans) has been tapped for the title role in Jack Reacher, the streamer’s drama series based on the character from Lee Child’s international bestselling series of books.

The first season of the series, written, exec produced and showrun by Nick Santora, is based on the first Jack Reacher novel, The Killing Floor, which is set in Georgia.

As conceived by Child, the imposing, 6’5″-tall, 210– to 250-pound character of Jack Reacher is a U.S. Army veteran investigating suspicious activities that frequently put him in danger. The role was played by Tom Cruise in the 2012 Jack Reacher feature and the 2016 sequel Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.

Child’s Jack Reacher is a billion-dollar brand published in 49 languages and 101 territories, with more than 100 million books sold.

Peter Saji, the co-creator of Mixed-ish and longtime Black-ish writer, is staying in the Disney family.

He has just signed another multi-year overall deal with ABC Signature, the new name for what was known as ABC Studios.

Saji signed his last overall deal with the company in 2017 and since has co-created the spin-off, which tells the story of Rainbow Johnson’s childhood growing up in a mixed-race family and was renewed for a second season.

He has been with the studio since 2007, when he started on the Disney/ABC Writers program. He subsequently worked on ABC comedies Cougar Town and Cavemen and went on to spend five seasons as a writer on Black-ish, where he wrote episodes including “Juneteenth,” “Purple Rain” and the previously shelved “Please, Baby, Please,” which recently aired on Hulu.

The “Black-ish” producer and “Mixed-ish” co-creator has signed a new multi-year overall deal with ABC Signature, under which he will continue to create and develop TV projects for the studio.

Saji signed his first overall with what was then ABC Studios in 2017 (Disney rebranded its TV units earlier this month), and he in fact began his career at Disney as part of the ABC Writers program back in 2007. News of Saji’s deal was announced by ABC Signature president Jonnie Davis.

Exclusive: Ryan Hansen and Aimee Carrero will play the leads in Someone Out There, NBC’s romantic comedy pilot based on a Spanish format. Actor-writer Neil Casey also has been cast in the project, from Matt Hubbard and the writing team of Josh Siegal and Dylan Morgan.

Written/executive produced by Hubbard and Siegal, Someone Out There is based on the Spanish format Pequeñas Coincidencias created by Javier Veiga. The single-camera romantic comedy is about two set-in-their-ways adults, Derek (Hansen) and Chloe (Carrero), who are challenged by very unexpected strangers to become the best versions of themselves in order to find love and possibly each other.

English child actor Noah Jupe has been cast as the young lead opposite Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant in The Undoing, HBO’s high-profile six-episode limited series, written by David E. Kelley and directed by Susanne Bier.

The project reunites Jupe with Bier — one of his first major roles was in the British limited series The Night Manager, which Bier directed.

An adaptation of Jean Hanff Korelitz’s book You Should Have Known, The Undoing centers on Grace Sachs (Kidman), who is living the only life she ever wanted for herself. She’s a successful therapist, has a devoted husband (Grant) and young son (Jupe) who attends an elite private school in New York City. Overnight a chasm opens in her life: a violent death, a missing husband, and, in the place of a man Grace thought she knew, only a chain of terrible revelations.

Marvel Studios is developing a tentpole movie about its Shang-Chi martial arts superhero and has set Dave Callaham to write the screenplay, sources have told Variety.

If the “Shang-Chi” movie gets made, it would mark the first time that a Marvel feature film has centered on an Asian character as a protagonist. The project is in the early stages with no director or actors yet attached.

Callaham, who is Chinese-American, is a co-writer with Patty Jenkins and Geoff Johns on the upcoming Warner Bros. sequel “Wonder Woman 1984.” He also teamed with Sylvester Stallone to write the original “Expendables” movie in 2010 and has a story credit on 2014’s “Godzilla” for Legendary.

The studio has set Chinese-American scribe Dave Callaham to write the screenplay, and Deadline hears Marvel is already looking at a number of Asian and Asian-American directors who want to do something as potentially monumental as was accomplished in Marvel’s first viable Best Picture candidate, Black Panther. “Artemis” follows a woman named Jazz, a directionless twentysomething constrained by her small town, the titular Artemis — the only city on Moon. With debts to pay and a salary that barely covers the rent, she can’t say no when a life-changing opportunity drops in her lap. Lakeshore Entertainment has signed Tyler James Williams, Anna Camp, Wanda Sykes, and Jenna Dewan to star opposite Sarah Hyland in “The Wedding Year.”

The project is directed by romantic comedy veteran Robert Luketic. Tom Connolly, Grace Helbig, and Fred Grandy are also starring.

Lakeshore made the announcement Wednesday. Shooting has started in Los Angeles.

Hyland portrays a Los Angeles photographer who has decided that she is never getting married. When she and her new ready-to-settle-down boyfriend are invited to 15 weddings in the same year, the pressure is on to change her mind.

Written by Don Diego, the film will be produced by Lakeshore’s Gary Lucchesi, Marc Reid, and Mark Korshak. Hyland will also serve as executive producer.

Luketic’s directing credits include “Legally Blonde,” “The Ugly Truth,” and “Monster-in-Law.”

Exclusive: Everybody Hates Chris alum Tyler James Williams is set to star opposite Sarah Hyland in the indie film, The Wedding Year, which is being directed by Legally Blonde helmer Robert Luketic.

Lakeshore Entertainment is the studio behind the pic about La photographer Mara Hickey (Hyland) who is never getting married. So, when she and her new ready-to-settle-down boyfriend are invited to fifteen weddings in the same year, the pressure is on Mara to make some big decisions.

Williams, whose recent credits include AMC’s The Walking Dead, Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit, and the film version of Dear White People, will play Mara’s boyfriend Jake Riddick, an aspiring chef who she meets on a dating site.

Lakeshore’s Gary Lucchesi, Marc Reid, and Mark Korshak will produce, while Hyland will serve as an executive producer on this project.
