Extra Ordinary – Kanopy, Paramount+

This horror-comedy from writers/directors Mike Ahern & Enda Loughman delivers laughs and ectoplasm in spades. Maeve Higgins stars as the kindly Rose Dooley, a lonely woman with a unique ability to see and deal with ghosts. The 2022 comedy lineup for the Life is Beautiful Festival has been revealed.

Among the stars joining The Kicker comedy lineup at the three-day Las Vegas music, art, culinary and comedy festival are Hacks stars Hanna Einbinder and Megan Stalter, Fire Island star and writer Joel Kim Booster, comedy trio Butterboy with Jo Firestone, Aparna Nancherla, and Maeve Higgins.

Einbinder will be featured in a live show with the Giggly Squad podcast alongside Hannah Berner and Paige DeSorbo. Acclaimed drag queen Latrice Royale, Saturday Night Live featured player Sarah Sherman, comedians Ricky Velez, Atsuko Okatsuko, Jordan Rock and Andrew Lopez are also set to perform.

Life is Beautiful Music & Art Festival is set to return to downtown Las Vegas this September, and in addition to a stacked music lineup that includes Lorde, Arctic Monkeys, and Gorillaz, there’s plenty of comedy on the menu. The festival, which takes place September 16-18, released its comedy lineup today, revealing that some of the biggest names in standup and podcasting will be making their way to Vegas this fall.

Highlights include standup performances from Joel Kim Booster, who’s hot off of his performance in the hit Hulu comedy “Fire Island,” and several stars of HBO’s “Hacks.” Both the Emmy-nominated Hannah Einbinder and Megan Stalter, who plays Kayla, will be performing sets at the festival. Also appearing are “RuPaul’s Drag Race” star Latrice Royale, “Love” star Jordan Rock, and “The Eric Andre Show” writer Sarah Sherman.

The Fangoria Chainsaw Awards Return to Shudder Sunday, May 15: "Fangoria, Fangoria Studios and Shudder announced today that the 2022 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards will premiere on Sunday, May 15th at 7pm Et, exclusively on Shudder, AMC Networks’ premium streaming service for horror, thrillers, and the supernatural.

The ceremony, which recognizes outstanding achievements in horror film and television, will once again be hosted by actor and writer David Dastmalchian, and will feature Dee Wallace, Joe Lo Truglio, Joe Dante, Tracie Thoms, Jim Cummings, Rachel True and the directing team known as Radio Silence among its presenters. Exclusive: Irish indie feature Extra Ordinary, a horror comedy about a ghost-busting duo, premiered in 2019 at SXSW to rave reviews.

It is now being adapted as a half-hour comedy series for TBS.

The Turner-owned cable network has put the project into development with Animal Pictures, the production company run by Maya Rudolph, Natasha Lyonne, and Danielle Renfrew Behrens.

The trio will produce the adaptation with Katie Holly & Yvonne Donohoe of Ireland’s Blinder Films, who produced the original movie with Mike Ahern and Enda Loughman, who wrote and directed the original feature attached to write and direct the series.

Extra Ordinary follows Rose and Martin, a ghostbustin’ duo, as they counsel ghosts in their small Irish village while navigating their own budding and sometimes awkward relationship. Everything is going well until an American family with supernatural powers moves into the local castle.

Exclusive: Mike Ahern and Enda Loughman will rewrite and direct the science fiction feature Sid for Amazon Studios from an original spec screenplay written by Travis Milloy (Pandorium), Deadline has learned. The storyline is being kept under wraps.

Ahern & Loughman’s feature directorial debut, Extra Ordinary, premiered in competition at last year’s SXSW to rave reviews, notching 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. The supernatural comedy follows Rose (Maeve Higgins), a mostly sweet and mostly lonely small-town driving instructor who must use her supernatural talent to save the daughter of Martin (Barry Ward), also mostly sweet and lonely, from a washed-up rock star (Will Forte) who is using her in a satanic pact that will reignite his fame.

Davis Entertainment and Zoic Studios are producing Sid. Producers are John Davis and John Fox via Davis Entertainment. EPs include Davis Entertainment’s Jeremy Stein and Zoic Studios’ Chris Jones, Samantha Shear and Loni Peristere.

The hybrid festival will showcase 11 world premieres.

Seán Breathnach’s Irish-language drama Foscadh, Ross Killeen’s music documentary Love Yourself Today and Graham Cantwell’s coming-of-age drama Who We Love are among several new Irish films making their world premiere at the hybrid Galway Film Fleadh which is running from July 20th to 25th.

The Fleadh will showcase 45 features, 11 of which are world premieres. The main physical venue will be an outdoor cinema in the city’s historic centre this year and many of the titles will also screen online along with the programme of industry events and filmmaker discussions.

Anne Hathaway is starring in the movie “French Children Don’t Throw Food,” based on Pamela Druckerman’s autobiographical book, “Bringing Up Bébé: One American Mother Discovers the Wisdom of French Parenting.”

StudioCanal is financing and is set to produce with Blueprint Picture. Druckerman, an American journalist, wrote the book after she had a baby in Paris and noticed that French children were well-behaved and slept through the night by the time they were two or three months old.

Jamie Minoprio and Jonathan Stern wrote the most recent draft of the adaptation. Blueprint’s producing credits include Focus Features’ “Emma” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.”

Hathaway won an Academy Award for supporting actress in 2012’s “Les Miserables.

Don’t laugh at him (with him is fine), but Evan Shapiro believes his new class of the “National Lampoon Radio Hour” is as talented as the original one.

“We legitimately have what I would call ‘the next class’ of the ‘Radio Hour,'” Shapiro, the former head of Seeso who now leads The National Lampoon’s rebranding, told TheWrap. “The level of talent that was represented originally, at a different stage in their careers today, reflective of their time.”

In making that big comparison, Shapiro is talking about “where they are as artists, and their voices, and where their backgrounds are from, but also in their ability to take on mainstream culture in a very subversive way,” to be as clear for readers and fair to him as possible.

National Lampoon Radio Hour version 2.0 will recreate the relevance of irreverence, promises Evan Shapiro.

National Lampoon magazine will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2020, and its sonic counterpart, the National Lampoon Radio Hour is being rebooted for the 21st century. Starting on Dec. 19, the iconic sketch comedy troupe which introduced the world to John Belushi, Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, Harold Ramis, Christopher Guest, and Gilda Radner will produce a new, original 11-episode scripted podcast.

The new National Lampoon Radio Hour is being shaped by head writer Cole Escola and senior writer Jo Firestone. It will be performed by a new generation of groundbreaking comedians coming from the New York alt-comedy scene. While much of the comedy world circumnavigates around the perilous waters of microagressions, there is at least one laughter delivery system which sails straight into it. Coming from an irreverent tradition which included an album called That's Not Funny, That's Sick, National Lampoon provides gags for an audience who can take a joke. They promise that now, as much as ever, is "time for a good laugh, again."

Starting on Dec. 19, National Lampoon Radio Hour, the iconic comedy show that introduced the world to John Belushi, Bill Murray and Gilda Radner returns to celebrate "the next generation of young, diverse comedic superstars," according to their press. T.R Knight has been cast in HBO Max‘s dark comedy “The Flight Attendant.“ Knight will play Cassie’s (Kaley Cuoco) older brother, Davey. When Cassie’s life starts to unravel, Davey deals with the fallout.

Daryl McCormack has been cast opposite Rosamund Pike (“Gone Girl”) in “The Wheel of Time” series adaptation at Amazon, Variety has learned exclusively. McCormack is said to be appearing in three episodes of the show in an undisclosed role. The Irish actor currently recurs on “Peaky Blinders” and is repped by Echo Lake Entertainment, Independent Talent Group in the U.K., and Lisa Richards Agency in Ireland.

Bet has renewed “Games People Play” starring Lauren London, Sarunas J. Jackson, Parker McKenna Posey, Karen Obilom and Jackie Long for a second season.

Grimmfest wrapped up its festivities the previous weekend. After much lost sleep was caught up on, the hangovers long subsided, it was time to announce this year's award winners. ‘Karli’ won the horror festival’s first work-in-progress award.

Kirill Sokolov’s Why Don’t You Just Die! has won a hat-trick of awards at Manchester horror festival Grimmfest, including best feature.

As well as the top prize, the dark comedy won best director for Sokolov and best SFX. It also received a special mention for cinematography and in the audience award category.

The team behind the Russian feature has been awarded £80,000 worth of post-production services from M2 MediaPost, which can be used as finance against a future film production.

Exclusive: Good Deed Entertainment’s Cranked Up Films has acquired North American distribution rights to the Irish supernatural comedy Extra Ordinary from Epic Pictures with an eye toward a fall 2019 theatrical release.

Extra Ordinary, which premiered at SXSW in March, is the debut feature from co-directors Mike Ahern & Enda Loughman, who also co-wrote the script for the fantasy-based comedy. The movie was filmed on location in Ireland.

The film stars Maeve Higgins, the Irish comedian, podcaster (she hosts My Best Break-Up on Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine roster) and author. The cast also features Barry Ward (Sky’s Britannia), Will Forte (The Last Man on Earth) and Claudia O’Doherty (Trainwreck).

Jim Jarmusch’s zombie pic The Dead Don’t Die, which will open the Cannes Film Festival next month, is set to make its U.S. premiere at the Overlook Film Festival, which kicks off May 30 and continues through June 2 in New Orleans. The news was announced today when the horror-centric fest unveiled third festival lineup.

In addition to the 41 films, the fest will feature television presentations, immersive presentations, virtual reality, interactive events, and live performances. This includes their closing night film The Lodge, a sneak preview of the forthcoming Universal Pictures horror Ma starring Octavia Spencer and a screening of DC Universe’s new series Swamp Thing. Robert Rodriguez will also be on hand to hold an educational master class on independent filmmaking before presenting his latest micro-budget independent effort Red 11 and a special screening of the ’90s sci-fi horror The Faculty.

Fresh off of the SXSW premiere of their first directorial feature, Extra Ordinary, filmmaking pair Enda Loughman and Mike Ahern have inked with 1stAveMachine and The Gotham Group for literary representation.

The Ireland-based duo, collectively known as “Daddy”, is expanding their relationship with 1stAveMachine from commercial representation as part of the company’s strategic alliance with The Gotham Group to help develop its talent pool of commercial directors and creatives into other platforms including film and television.

Extra Ordinary stars Maeve Higgins, Barry Ward, Will Forte, and Claudia O’Doherty. The supernatural comedy follows Rose, a mostly sweet and mostly lonely small-town driving instructor, who must use her supernatural talent to save the daughter of Martin, also mostly sweet and lonely, from a washed-up rock star, who is using her in a satanic pact that will reignite his fame.

Loughman and Ahern are also currently writing an original screenplay for Aardman Animations.

Horror and comedy are both abundant genres in Hollywood. They're also both very difficult to pull off. For something to truly transcend it must accomplish a seemingly impossible number of tasks. For that reason, most entries from both of these genres exist somewhere in the middle ground. When trying to do both at the same time it can be doubly tricky. Such is the case with Extra Ordinary. This particular horror/comedy serves as a welcome send-up of the paranormal genre, even though it doesn't get to that next level.

The 2019 SXSW Film Festival launched plenty of buzz for many anticipated studio releases, from Jordan Peele’s “Us” to Olivia Wilde’s “Booksmart,” but these movies don’t tell the whole story. The Austin gathering showcased 102 features and episodic across nine days, and it remains unclear where many of those titles will surface next. But even if they didn’t garner the same level of hype, many of the smaller-scale narratives and documentaries at SXSW 2019 deserve audiences beyond the insular film festival circuit.

These highlights may not generate massive deals, but in today’s malleable distribution landscape, there are many of ways that strong, original storytelling can find audience. Here’s our usual plea that buyers take a chance on these worthy films that still need homes.

Something Extra Ordinary is coming to SXSW this weekend. Meet Rose, she has supernatural abilities. And she's about to use them to help her neighborhood in what could be one of the strangest films playing the Austin fest this year. We have the first trailer and poster for you to check out.

Rose is a sweet, lovely driving instructor gifted with supernatural abilities. Set within the rural Ireland landscape, Rose has tried to come to terms with her powers, but must constantly refuse various requests to exorcise spirits from garbage cans or a pile of haunted gravel.

Things take a turn for the weird when one-hit wonder and washed up rock star Christian Winter shows up. He's made a deal with the devil, hoping to propel himself back to stardom. And in turn, he puts a hex on a local teenager. The girl's frieghtened father reaches out to Rose for help.

Hollywood might not be known as the most patient of industries, but sometimes, good things do come to those who wait. Like “MacGruber” fans, who have spent the last decade beating the drum for a sequel to the Jorma Taccone-directed comedy, a cult classic that made less than $10 million when it was released in theaters but has continued to win fans for its ability to turn one “Saturday Night Live” sketch series into an actually viable feature-length film. Bolstered by a wacky charms of star and co-writer Will Forte, “MacGruber” is now poised to get another life, this time in the form of a television series that promises to be just as out-there and adult-oriented as its comically bloody cinematic predecessor.

“The state of ‘MacGruber’ right now is, we’re trying to see if somebody will let us make it as a TV series,” Forte said in a recent interview with IndieWire.

Following the news they would open with the world premiere of Jordan Peele’s Us, the 2019 South by Southwest by Southwest Film Festival have announced their features and episodic premieres lineup.

The annual gathering in Austin, Texas, which starts on March 8, will open with Jordan Peele’s “Us,” which was previously announced. The thriller stars Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke and Elisabeth Moss.

There will be 102 features and TV episodes featured over nine days.

In recent years, SXSW has upped its game as a festival that covers a lot of ground. It reliably launches a few spring studio hits, such as last year’s “The Quiet Place” and “Blockers,” and also discovers under-the-radar storytellers. For attendees, there’s also keynote addresses with filmmakers and actors.

The standouts in this year’s lineup include Korine’s “The Beach Bum,” a much-anticipated comedy starring Matthew McConaughey, Snoop Dogg and Zac Efron.

Rooster Teeth announced today that its podcast network The Roost has partnered with Reese Witherspoon’s media company Hello Sunshine to boost women’s voices in podcasting. With The Roost, Hello Sunshine plans to produce a number of women-centered podcasts, both by developing original series and by curating a number of existing podcasts.

The first of Hello Sunshine’s new originals is My Best Breakup, announced today. My Best Breakup will be hosted by comedian Maeve Higgins, and will begin airing in October. My Best Breakup will feature women guests highlighting their most transformational breakups.

Hello Sunshine’s first podcast, How It Is, launched earlier this year [and is also entering The Roost's fold]. Hosted by actress Diane Guerrero (Orange Is the New Black), How It Is gives female guests the chance to tell their life stories.
