Exclusive: Oscar- and Emmy-nominated production company Aircraft Pictures and Dolphin Entertainment have teamed for a reboot of 1986 hockey drama Youngblood.

Cameras have just rolled on the movie in Hamilton and Barrie, Canada, with Hubert Davis directing.

Youngblood follows hockey prodigy Dean Youngblood, who joins the Hamilton Mustangs and discovers he must face off against toxic behavior on the ice and within himself to fulfill his potential as professional hockey player. The original MGM movie, a cult classic, starred Rob Lowe, Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves in the latter’s feature film debut. Lowe and Reeves aren’t on the bench to return.

Dune: Prophecy is an ensemble series with actors from various backgrounds. Telling the story of the creation of the Bene Gesserit, the show features a leading cast including Emily Watson, Olivia Williams, Chloe Lea, Jade Anouka, Faoileann Cunningham, Aoife Hinds, Travis Fimmel, and Jodhi May. Exclusive: Producer Daniel Bekerman, whose The Apprentice, just premiered in competition at Cannes to rave reviews, has set his next feature Knight’s Camp, a dark comedy starring Judy Greer and Sophia Lillis.

Filmmaking duo Kyle Rideout and Josh Epstein co-wrote the screenplay, with Rideout set to helm.

Josh Epstein and Kyle Rideout, the Canadian filmmaking team behind indies Eadweard and Adventures in Public School, are going medieval.

The duo have set up their latest feature project, the dark comedy Knight’s Camp, at Good Question Media, which is financing development.

Epstein and Rideout co-wrote the project with Rideout in the director’s chair for a spring 2023 start.

Producing are Dan Bekerman (Falling, The Witch) and Chris Yurkovich (Slash/Back) of Good Question Media, along with Epstein. Deanna Brigidi of 5th House Casting is casting.

Knight’s Camp follows four bubble-wrapped teens at a summer “knight’s training camp” who are preparing to re-enact an ancient battle when they are accidentally transported to the real battle in 1293.

Set in and around a Scottish castle, the comedy seeks to highlight the clash between modern-day teens and the realistically brutal world of those gritty times.

Aircraft Pictures is teaming up with Dolphin Entertainment to produce a new feature adaptation of the 1986 sports drama, Youngblood, with rising filmmaker Charles Officer (Akilla’s Escape) on board to direct. The film is slated to begin principal photography in early 2023.

Josh Epstein & Kyle Rideout, Seneca Aaron and Officer penned the script for the new film, which will be distributed in Canada by Photon Films — being made with the financial participation of Telefilm Canada and the Talent Fund, as well as Ontario Creates and the Shaw Rocket Fund.

Exclusive: Paramount has snapped up Kyle Rideout and Josh Epstein’s feature pitch for Astrid’s Death List, which di Bonaventura Pictures is producing.

The storyline is being kept under wraps. Erik Howsam and Stephen Shafer brought the project into Paramount and will be overseeing for di Bonaventura Pictures.

The duo wrote the comedy Adventures in Public School, which Rideout directed, and Netflix bought out of Toronto in 2017. That pic, which starred Judy Greer, Russell Peters and Siobhan Williams, followed a socially awkward home-schooled kid who forces his way into public school against the wishes of his suffocating but loving mother.

Rideout and Epstein were recently brought on by eOne to rewrite and direct Babysitting, a remake of the French comedy.

The duo are represented by Echo Lake Entertainment, the Jennifer Hollyer Agency and Michael Schenkman at Bloom Hergott.

Despite the devastating mudslides that overwhelmed the Santa Barbara, California community of Montecito last week — resulting in at least 20 deaths and the destruction of 100-plus homes — the Santa Barbara International Film Festival (Sbiff) will go on as usual. A reason to celebrate is “needed now more than ever,” wrote Sbiff director Roger Durling in a letter soon to be shared with festival-goers. Mary Harron, Kim Nguyen (both pictured above), Ingrid Veninger, and Denis Côté are among the familiar names in the 26-strong Canadian Features slate that Toronto International Film Festival programmers unveiled on Wednesday.

The selection comprises the highest number of feature directorial debutants and films from Western Canada in recent years. More than 30% of the titles are by first-time feature directors.

Festival brass also announced Short Cuts, Tiff Cinematheque, Rising Stars, Telefilm Canada Pitch This! finallists, and the recipient of the 2017 Len Blum Residency.

The 42nd Toronto International Film Festival runs from September 7-17.

At this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, the annual event will pay tribute to its home country with a number of options that span the past, present, and future of Canadian creativity. Per usual, the fest has unveiled a slew of titles that will make up its Canadian feature slate — 26 in all — with an eye towards advancing not only established Canadian filmmakers, but rising stars as well.

This year’s Canadian lineup boasts one of the highest numbers of feature directorial debuts ever, as well as one of the highest numbers of films from Western Canada in recent years. Over 30% of the titles have a first-time feature director, while seven out of nine are Tiff alumni.

Kaleidoscope has boarded world sales (excluding Canada) on comedy feature Public Schooled, which begins principal photography in Vancouver this week.

Cast includes Archer and Ant-man star Judy Greer, comedian Russell Peters (Source Code) Grace Park (Hawaii 5-0) and, newcomer Daniel Doheny who will take the lead role of Liam.

Deadline has premiered a teaser trailer for an indie biopic called Eadweard, about pioneering photographer Eadweard Muybridge who some may say was the very first filmmaker ever. He was the man who experimented with motion and multi-camera photography and eventually shot "The Horse In Motion" in 1886, known sort of as one of the very first movies ever made. Michael Eklund plays Eadweard and he's kind of a quirky proto-hipster, with a beard and a passion for vintage cameras. But this actually looks really, really good with some excellent attention to deal and an interesting story about an inventor. I am curious to see it as soon as I can. The partners arrive on the Croisette with worldwide sales rights to the biopic Eadweard, possession thriller The Evil Gene, drama Land Of Leopold, historical drama Orphans (Huerfanos) and the psychological thriller Prism.

All films make their market debuts.

Eadweard James Muybridge was kind of a big deal in the world of early movies. A bookseller-turned-photographer, Muybridge became world famous for his photographs of Yosemite Valley, for his pioneering work in stop motion photography and for developing a device for projecting motion pictures. Essentially, he was a forefather of the motion picture.

Actor turned director Kyle Rideout makes his feature film debut with Eadweard, a biopic on Muybridge which stars Michael Eklund, sporting some crazy facial hair, as the titular photographer. Eklund is best known for playing eccentrics and that seems to carry through to Eadweard who, in this movie at least, is made out as a bit of a power hungry control freak.

The Vampire Diaries actress Sara Canning, Ian Tracey and Jodi Balfour have joined the cast of the untitled psychological drama centered on Eadweard Muybridge. Michael Eklund is starring in the Canadian indie, which is being directed by Kyle Rideout and produced by Josh Epstein. Rideout and Epstein were behind Wait for Rain, a short that won best science fiction/fantasy at last year’s Comic-Con International Film Festival. The Muybridge project is their first feature. Michael Eklund ("The Call," "Errors of the Human Body," "Watchmen") will star in an untitled indie psychological thriller centering on world-famous 19th century photographer Eadweard Muybridge.

Muybridge was a world-famous 19th century photographer who took pictures of nude and deformed subjects. He also killed his wife’s lover and received a justifiable homicide verdict.

Muybridge found fame though with his landscape shots and pioneering motion photography with his zoopraxiscope device - what is considered the first movie projector.

Kyle Rideout helms from a script he co-wrote with Josh Epstein and based on the 2006 play "Studies in Motion: The Hauntings of Eadweard Muybridge". Shooting will kick off this summer in Vancouver.

So, by now, everybody’s heard endlessly about all the big mainstream movie, tv show and comic book news that came out of this year’s Comic-Con International.

However, the unsung winners of the world’s largest media gathering were the winners of Comic-Con’s Independent Film Festival, which ran four straight days and nights of genre short films from all over the world. Films were screened in blocks according to type with one winning film picked from each block.

The big winner of the Cci-iff was Alex DeMille’s The Absence, a horror film about a middle manager investigating an odd mystery being covered up by the corporation he works for. The Absence took home two awards, one for Best Horror/Suspense Film and the other the Judge’s Choice Award.

(Judges for the fest included filmmakers Steven-Charles Jaffee and Kyle Newman, plus entertainment journalist Borys Kit.)

Other winners...

San Diego’s Comic-Con International is the biggest event in the world devoted to genre pop culture. While the big Hollywood movies get the most mainstream press, there’s also a large, lesser known and promoted Independent Film Festival devoted to genre short films tucked away within the overall convention.

The Cci-iff, as it’s acronymed, runs completely concurrently with the convention with programming running from morning to night that includes films devoted to comic book-inspired movies, horror movies, sci-fi flicks, comedies and documentaries. There are also several panels on filmmaking sandwiched in between the on-screen entertainment.

The fest also gives out awards. This year’s juror panel includes filmmakers Steven-Charles Jaffee and Kyle Newman, plus entertainment journalist Borys Kit.
