Daniel Dae Kim Talks James Hong Walk Of Fame Campaign And Importance Of Advocating For Asian Hollywood
Image
Daniel Dae Kim is probably best known for his role in the iconic sci-fi series Lost as well as his role in Hawaii Five-0. He has since become a gamechanger and disrupter when it comes to advocacy for Asians, Asian Americans and other underrepresented voices in Hollywood.

In 2017, he and Grace Park, who is also Asian, exited the CBS reboot of the classic ahead of the eighth season due to contractual agreements surrounding salary. This shined a light on salary parity in film and TV and how it impacts people of color and other marginalized voices — something that the industry has been grappling with for decades.

He forged his own path with his production banner 3Ad, which produced The Good Doctor and has many irons in the fire via his first-look deal with Amazon. He is producing a comedy with deaf actor and model Nyle Dimarco as well as the...

Relive the Transformation Scene in An American Werewolf in London in The Funniest Way Possible
The transformation scene in John Landis' classic An American Werewolf in London is to this day one of the horror genre's finest moments and a true benchmark in practical effects work. Time to take a truly loving look at it!

Director Travis Betz (Joshua) got together with John's son, Max Landis (who stars in the short below), and Cinefex to do a homemade reenactment of the iconic and infamous transformation. The results are pretty friggin' hilarious. Check it out!

In case you've been living under a rock or are too young to know any better, the iconic film follows two American college students, Jack and David, as they backpack across the moors of England. On a misty, full-moon night, the men are attacked by a supernatural creature that kills Jack and taints David with its horrific curse.

Before You See 'Carrie,' Check Out 'Paper Carrie'

Filmmaker Travis Betz is annoyed that the Hollywood movie machine is remaking every movie that "touched his heart." In an act of passive protest, Betz decided to "remake their remake out of paper." Ladies and gentlemen... "Paper Carrie."

Betz, a horror movie fanatic, has lots of other paper horror on his website: Jurassic Park, Machete Kills, Prometheus, and my favorite: The Conjuring.

Dust Up (2012)
Exclusive: Interview With “Dust Up” Director Ward Roberts
Dust Up (2012)
Earlier, we posted a review of the action comedy Dust Up, a neo-western with shades of Quentin Tarantino, Sergio Leone, and Grindhouse films. The film was written and directed by Ward Roberts (Little Big Top), and can be found on VOD and PPV, and has been out since October and November. What follows is FM’s interview with Ward: our discussion about his influences, his hilarious cast, the case of the missing miniature pony, and the tenacity it takes to be an independent filmmaker.

Read our rave review here and be sure to check it out on VOD.

FM: I always ask this because I’m always curious. What kinds of films, or TV, or books did you grow up on? What inspired you to become a filmmaker?

Ward Roberts: You know, I would say, watching Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Superman, those are my very earliest cinematic influences.

Review: 'Dust Up' Is A Hipster Apocalypse Western, Like Alex Cox Doing 'Mad Max'
No budget, no problem. The seams show often in “Dust Up,” an unapologetically silly action comedy that feels as if it was produced entirely from the loose change found on all of Brooklyn’s collective bar tops. Complimenting the jaunty original score and songs from Spindrift and Gram Rabbit are stock soundtrack cues like a soaring eagle, crashing glass, and what sounds like the loudest punches ever recorded for a film, even when delivered by hundred-pound weaklings. Eternally lost in the desert is ex-vet Jack (Aaron Gaffey), who survived war trauma to become a “high desert handyman” with a granite pokerface and an eyepatch that others can’t help but acknowledge is “badass.” A phone call takes him to the doorstep of Ellen (a frankly adorable Amber Benson), who he hopes to assist with her plumbing issues, but also maybe a bit more? The point is moot as Jack soon encounters her husband,...

Dust Up (2012)
Written and Directed by Ward Roberts

Featuring Amber Benson, Aaron Gaffey, Devin Barry, Travis Betz, Jeremiah Birkett

As a dumb kid, I spent considerable time camped out in front of cable TV. The programming I begrudgingly missed for school or basic hygiene, I captured with my Vcr set to record the maximum hours allotted on a standard VHS tape.

Poorer quality, sure, but it was suitable for the six hours worth of garbage movies and random junk I recorded on a daily basis. I was, however, able to discover some pretty nifty shit during that wondrous time; films like The Zero Boys, Hunter's Blood, Neon Maniacs, Alligator, Quiet Cool, Waxwork, and Dudes remain staples of my diet to this day. Today, I'm a dumb grown-up, and at the risk of this sounding like an Abe Simpson rant, I feel sorry for kids growing up today. I really do. My growth...

The Dead Inside and Requiring Expansion: A Movie Review
*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Monarch Home Entertainment. Director/writer: Travis Betz. Cast: Sarah Lassez and Dustin Fasching. This reviewer knows Indiana born Travis Betz from his earlier production Lo. This title featured a demon and a circle of protection. This title was a small film. Betz's latest, The Dead Inside, is also a small film. There are only two characters and all of the action takes place in one setting, much like Betz's earlier film. Thus, there are only a few places this film can go. The Dead Inside is a little too mundane in this tight space to be enjoyable and it is a little too long to be recommended for most film fans. The story seems simple enough. Fi (Sarah Lassez) and West (Dustin Fasching) are a couple living together in a smallish apartment. West is a photographer by day, while...

Adult Swim Parodies Paper "Prometheus" Trailer Parody (Video)
This week, filmmaker Travis Betz posted the "Prometheus" trailer he animated using only construction paper and his girlfriend's camera skills. By Thursday night, it had more than 200,000 views -- and at least one imitator. Adult Swim, the Atlanta-based late night television network, aired a shorter, less elaborate version of its own. "There was no reference to me anywhere, I don't know if it was a crazy old coincidence," Betz told TheWrap. "But imitation is always the mark of flattery." Adult Swim did not return an email from TheWrap requesting comment. Betz, 35, said he...

Watch the Paper-Animated 'Prometheus' Trailer
Travis Betz
If you're thinking that Prometheus has no new trailers to offer you, think again... Los Angeles filmmaker/animator Travis Betz debuted his own version of one of the film's promos -- made entirely out of paper. Watch it after the jump. The Hollywood Reporter states that this trailer for Prometheus (which opens Friday, June 8th), "posted on YouTube on Monday, replicates one of Fox's promos for the film entirely with paper and was the brainchild of Los Angeles filmmaker Travis Betz." "'This is further proof that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and that talent is everywhere,' Fox executive vice president of corporate communications Chris Petrikin said. "Betz said he has...

Fan-Created 'Prometheus' Paper Trailer Impresses 20th Century Fox (Video)
Travis Betz
A trailer for 20th Century Fox's Prometheus is making waves on the Internet -- and it wasn't even created by the studio. The trailer, posted on YouTube on Monday, replicates one of Fox's promos for the film entirely with paper and was the brainchild of Los Angeles filmmaker Travis Betz. "This is further proof that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and that talent is everywhere," Fox executive vice president of corporate communications Chris Petrikin said. Cool Videos: Paper Prometheus Trailer
I figured that someone would post this already, but again I am here to the rescue. Since we are all about all things Prometheus this week, I find it appropriate to post this trailer made entirely of paper. Fans can truly create some amazing things dedicated to their favorite film. This is a good example. It's also a little creepy in paper form. Travis Betz posted this only as a fan of the Alien series and Ridley Scott. Next thing he knows, he's getting love from Damon Lindelof and 20th Century Fox. Check this wonderful thing out below.

Prometheus (2012)
Watch: 'Prometheus' Trailer Done In Paper And Other Spoof Videos
Prometheus (2012)
Because you haven't seen enough teasers, clips and viral videos for "Prometheus," here comes a new trailer for the film -- done entirely in paper.

Keeping with a recent trend of recasting blockbuster trailers in odd forms -- LEGOs, sausages -- the "Prometheus" paper clip is exactly what you'd expect: the Ridley Scott film's most teaser-y moments redone with paper. (The design work was done by The Receptionist, a.k.a Travis Betz, who has a series of short films done in paper online.)

Watch paper "Prometheus" in the slideshow below, and stick around for clips of "The Dark Knight," "Battleship," "Lord of the Rings" and more.

Dust Up (2012)
Exclusive premiere: Spindrift "Round Up"
Dust Up (2012)
We bring a long running series of heavy videos from Spindrift's "Classic Soundtracks Vol. 1" to a close with a light hearted "Round Up." It's the directorial debut of the band's own Sasha Vallely who had such a riot working with the wild roster of directors on previous videos for the album that she decided to shoot one of her own. Vallely, who was also an extra in Ward Robert's "Dust Up," chose him to be the main character in this slapstick bar fight filmed at Pappy & Harriet's in Pioneertown, originally created in the 40's as a living movie set.

"Ward was perfect for the role, he made everyone laugh so much it was a really fun shoot," Vallely beamed. "Using some of the cast and crew from 'Dust Up,' Shannon Hourigan as cinematographer, stuntman Al Burke and director Travis Betz made everything run really smoothly and I am very happy with the results.

MoreHorror Reports from 11th Annual Shriekfest 2011 Film Festival
by Michael Pickle, MoreHorror.com

Founder of Shriekfest Denise Gossett was voted one of the top women in Horror for a reason. She puts together one of the biggest and longest running genre festivals out there. She's such a sweet and down to earth lady that it's hard to believe that she's responsible for bringing so much horror into the world. This year was no different.

2011's line-up of films was stellar. Some were more well received than others, but overall it was a pretty impressive batch of feature and short films alike as well as fascinating and enlightening Q&A's after some of the better films. Feature films like The Dead Inside, Absentia, Pig and short films like Certified and Negative Image simply wowed the audience and left people talking long after the screenings were over.

These weren't your run-of-the-mill studio films like some other genre festivals. These were genuinely groundbreaking,...
