Pretty Problems Review
Image
Can a couple stuck in a professional and marital rut survive a wine country weekend with über wealthy friends? That’s the premise of Michael Tennant’s surprise SXSW hit Pretty Problems. The imaginative yet surprisingly grounded romp won accolades at various film festivals, including Maui Film Festival’s Narrative Feature Comedy award, Best English Language Feature Film at the Sonoma International Film Festival, and ReFrame’s “ReFrame Stamp” Feature. The film managed to also take home the coveted SXSW Film Festival Audience Award in the Narrative Spotlight slot.

As the writer, producer, and co-star of the film, Tennant teamed with fellow screenwriters Britt Rentschler and Charlotte Ubben, and director Kestrin Pantera (Mother’s Little Helpers). The story tracks a slippery vulnerability spiral experienced by Lindsay (Rentschler) and Jack (Tennant) when they head to a plush Sonoma château with affluent strangers, only to wind up questioning nearly everything about their relationship and their economic status.

Exclusive: Michael Tennant on His SXSW Hit Comedy Pretty Problems
Image
Faced with uncertainty in his own marriage, screenwriter/producer/actor Michael Tennant wanted to make a comedy that two people who could have another go at it if they were willing to, as he puts it, “look at their own sh*t, do the work, and say ‘I love you. I’m sorry. Please forgive me.’”

The result is Pretty Problems, which feels like a creative cousin to Wedding Crashers by way of the Duplass Brothers with a touch of Schitt’s Creek tossed in there for some wonderful humor. But make no mistake, Pretty Problems is downright original. The film won the SXSW Film Festival Audience Award in 2022. It hits Hulu on July 13.

Written by Tennant, Britt Rentschler, and Charlotte Ubben, Pretty Problems was directed by Kestrin Pantera (Mother’s Little Helpers). The satirical smackdown of the uber wealthy is great fun with an on-the-mark cast featuring Tennant, Britt Rentschler (Uncle Frank...

SXSW Adds Even More Genre Titles to Their Packed Horror Lineup
Image
Holy hell this year’s SXSW Film Festival really isn’t messing around.

The previous announcement unveiled a stacked horror lineup that includes headiners Evil Dead Rise and opener Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

In addition, they revealed several prominent horror titles that will premiere as part of the Midnighters program, including the Sundance hit Talk to Me and the surprise sequel to Becky, The Wrath of Becky.

It turns out, the programming team isn’t finished!

SXSW announced another wave of film programming today, including an eighth Midnighter.

“Midnighters don’t need to be exclusively horror films, they just need to perk you up and get your blood pumping,” said Peter Hall, Film & TV Festival Programmer. “That’s why this year’s SXSW Midnighters class is a mix of horror, bone-crunching action, and mind-melting genre hybrids. Some of them introduce new, terrifying lore to the canon of suburban horror movies,...

‘Chicago Med’ Stars Find Fun In Social Media Fan Reactions
Oliver Platt, Steven Weber, Marlyne Barrett, S. Epatha Merkerson, and Jessy Schram in Chicago Med (2015)
Chicago Med –JJ Nolan as Jenny Mitchell, Jessy Schram as Hannah Asher, Nick Gehlfuss as Will Halstead — (Photo by: George Burns Jr/NBC) Plenty of people have had plenty to say about social media lately. But, at its best, it’s a great place for people to connect and talk about the things they love — like their favorite television shows. Sometimes, people even get to connect with the people who make or star on the shows. Jessy Schram and Nick Gehlfuss of Chicago Med admit to checking out what the fans have to say when they’ve got the time, and they told us they’ve had a lot of fun doing it.

Chicago Med airs Wednesdays at 8/7c on NBC, and episodes start streaming the following day on Peacock.

‘Pretty Problems’ Review: A Brief, Bruising Climb Up the Social Ladder
Image
Class divisions that assume macrocosmic significance in Ruben Östlund’s “Triangle of Sadness” remain microcosmically scaled in “Pretty Problems,” another cleverly discomfiting, festival-blessed comedy hitting theaters on Oct. 13. Kestrin Pantera’s third directorial feature, which won the Audience Award at SXSW, also places a less-advantaged young couple in an enclave of the very rich. Here, however, the upscale slumming is not free, but rather at their expense — a cruel-gamesmanship setup that (as our hero duly notes) suggests the usual horror-movie agenda of “They’re gonna kill us.”

That teased direction is not where the film eventually goes, and indeed the script (hatched by several lead performers here) manages to keep upending expectations to the end. The result is a fresh mix of social satire and relationship dissection with a saving dollop of heart. IFC is opening it on about 30 U.S. theater screens, simultaneous with on-demand platforms.

Opening with a...

‘Pretty Problems’ Review: Rich People Get Very, Very Wine Drunk in Fizzy Hangout Comedy
Image
Sometimes, the grass really is greener. That’s a lesson that Jack and Lindsay (Michael Tennant and Britt Rentschler) learn in “Pretty Problems,” though it’s not like their side of the fence was offering much competition. The young married couple is stuck in the kind of rut that nobody expects to hit at such an early age. She’s a wannabe fashion designer who had to put her dreams on whole and work a retail job, while he’s a lovable schlub selling solar panels door-to-door while making sure his probation officer (who’s tragically named Doug) doesn’t send him to jail. They have a nonexistent sex life despite their best efforts, and appear to be floating in a kind of domestic purgatory that isn’t easily escaped.

That all changes when Cat (JJ Nolan) wanders into the boutique where Lindsay works. The vape-loving, wine-guzzling trophy wife is...

Britt Rentschler in Sonoma Party Comedy 'Pretty Problems' Trailer
Image
"I thought she was joking when she said she invited you up here." IFC Films has revealed an official trailer for an indie comedy titled Pretty Problems, which originally premiered at this year's SXSW Film Festival in the spring. Jack and Lindsay are invited on a getaway trip with affluent strangers: down the rabbit hole, and into the most unhinged weekend of their lives. Can their relationship survive? This wacky, wild comedy takes a look at the difference between the "haves" and "have nots" on this party trip to a Sonoma Chateau. The film stars Britt Rentschler and Michael Tennant as Lindsay and Jack, with J.J. Nolan, Charlotte Ubben, Graham Outerbridge, Alex Klein, Clayton Froning, Katarina Hughes, Vanessa Chester, and Amy Maghera. This looks like it's trying to make fun of "pretty people" and all their crazy problems, but it also looks so ludicrous it may not even be fun?...

Fantastic Trailer for Teen Pregnancy Horror Comedy Film 'Snatchers'
"Did you... pull out?" Warner Bros Home Entertainment has unveiled the official trailer for a movie titled Snatchers, a horror comedy from the filmmaking duo Stephen Cedars & Benji Kleiman. Some folks may recognize this already, as it's based on the short film and TV series also both titled Snatchers, dealing with the same thing. After status-obsessed teen Sara, played by newcomer Mary Nepi, has sex for the first time, she wakes up the next day nine months pregnant-with an alien. It's a creepy, icky, amusing creature feature pregnancy comedy and it actually lives up to that conceptual potential. Also starring Gabrielle Elyse, J.J. Nolan, Austin Fryberger, Nick Gomez, Rich Fulcher, Amy Landecker, and Ashley Argota. This really, really does look like it might be the best possible version of this pregnancy-as-a-monster metaphor turned into a movie. All the jokes are solid, their friendship works well, might even be better than this looks.

Alicia Silverstone, Stacey Dash, and Brittany Murphy in Clueless (1995)
SXSW Film Review: ‘Snatchers’
Alicia Silverstone, Stacey Dash, and Brittany Murphy in Clueless (1995)
“Clueless” meets “It’s Alive,” among other things, in “Snatchers.” Stephen Cedars and Benji Kleiman’s first feature is a great argument for teenage chastity, in that its high school heroine’s first sexual experience leads overnight to an alien-monster pregnancy and, possibly, the end of the world. See, impulses have consequences!

Moralists may wish that message were delivered a tad more seriously, but there’s a great deal of fun to be had from this high-energy spinoff of an eponymous online series. In a SXSW Midnighters lineup overladen with variable horror comedies, this is at least one genuinely funny entry. It’s got a decent shot at theatrical exposure in addition to bright streaming prospects, all of which will no doubt be boosted by enthusiastic reception on the genre-fest circuit.

Sophomore Sara (Mary Nepi) has become a member of the Madre Vista High in-crowd led by snippy princess Kiana...

The first two episodes premiere Today, Thursday June 22, with additional episodes premiering weekly on Thursdays.

“Snatchers” follows Sara, a status-obsessed high school student, who, to preserve her social standing, has sex for the first time and unexpectedly wakes up pregnant...really pregnant. Things take an interesting turn the morning after she loses her virginity when she quickly discovers she’s pregnant with an alien baby screaming to get out. Now she’ll have to team up with her nerdy ex-best friend Hayley to fight against an extraterrestrial threat, and hopefully keep her mom and friends from finding out about her alien offspring.

“Our goal with ‘Snatchers’ was to bring a human element to the horror-comedy genre. We wanted to create a series that was funny and thrilling, a story with real stakes and honest emotions. We believe the power of the horror-comedy genre lies in playing with people's expectations, creating tension then releasing it through a laugh or a scream -- or hey, both at the same time! Adding a touch of sincerity to that mixture creates something surprisingly unique and visceral,” said The Olde Money Boyz.
