Netflix announced today a sixth and final season for the series based on the Walt Longmire series of books by Craig Johnson.

The final season will consist of 10 episodes and air sometime in 2017.

First airing on A&E, the series was off the air quite a while as long-time fans sent angry messages about pulling the show.

Longmire was getting decent ratings when it last aired on a traditional cable network, and fans voices went unheard.

Or so they thought.

That's where Netflix came in and saved that day. It was the success of Longmire on Netflix and being saved from destruction that has helped so many fans make the appeal to Netflix when their now-favorite shows are on the chopping block.

What they have to remember, however, is that Longmire came with the goods: cast, writing, viewers were all well above standard.

After airing its first three seasons on A&E, Longmire was canceled by the cable network, only to be resurrected by Netflix. With Season 4 set to debut September 10 on the streaming service, stars Robert Taylor (Sheriff Walt Longmire) and Lou Diamond Phillips (Henry Standing) revealed new details about this upcoming season, and the prospects of getting renewed for a fifth season on Netflix. Here's what Lou Diamond Phillips had to say in an interview with Collider, when asked how this season is different from the first three seasons.

"What our writers - specifically Hunt Baldwin, John Coveny and Greer Shephard - have done is they've taken a thread and stretched it out over multiple episodes. In some cases, especially with the death of Walt's wife, Martha, they have continued to twist it and turn it and keep it compelling and interesting. “Never before had I wept in a meeting.” Such was Longmire executive producer Greer Shephard’s emotional reaction when Netflix decided to move forward with Season 4 of the series.

The EPs discussed at TCA today their journey from A&e Network’s cancellation following their Season 3 cliffhanger in late August 2014 to its Netflix Season 4 resurrection scheduled to stream beginning on September 10. In addition, the Longmire panel teased some string from next season’s 10 episodes.

As previously reported, Season 4 promptly picks up with Walt Longmire (Robert Taylor), the sheriff of Absaroka County, Wy, learning who killed his wife and setting out to avenge her death. In addition, Branch Connally (Bailey Chase), the deputy who Walt fired for being a loose cannon, has his own theories.

Added Shephard, “Season 4 is about second chances. Who you are as a person is defined by how you handle the second chance. Netflix has incorporated that theme in their campaign.

The TV world is always wild, and some of the cable networks are still figuring out exactly what it is they’re trying to get out of shows, as they attempt to appeal to whatever demographic they have decided is “theirs,” but the cancellation of Longmire was a shock to a lot of people.

That’s especially true when you consider the ratings it was getting.

Of course, saner heads prevailed, and the show was picked up by Netflix. The last word I head on it was that production is meant to start in March.

At any rate, the show is a great one, and stood out during its three season run as one that was trying to set its own mark.

The third season release is headed your way, and you want to mark your calendar for this one. It isn’t exactly loaded with special features, but it hardly matters with this show.

There’s something satisfactory about a series that does well, even if it is on a smaller network like A&E. For a show like Longmire, a few million views per episode is considered a hit, whereas if it were airing on CBC it would be considered a failure. Thankfully that’s not the case. In fact, it’s the exact opposite for Longmire, which is A&E’s most-watched drama ever. It’s a low bar to hit, sure, but it’s still something that matters. You should never think a few million isn’t a lot. Can you honestly say you watch a ton of A&E programming? I know I don’t. So Longmire amassing its viewer count is an achievement worth noting.

In disappointing, albeit unsurprising news, the network announced yesterday that it has canceled The Glades after four seasons.

The light-hearted drama concluded Season 4 on Monday by racking up 3.4 million viewers and will now leave them with an unanswered cliffhanger, with Jim shot by and bloody when the credits rolled.

Fortunately for fans of another A&E series, however, there will be no such lack of closure: Longmire producer John Coveny Tweeted that his show has been renewed for another season, though we are still awaiting confirmation from the network itself.

A&E is getting out The Glades.

The low-buzz yet sturdy Florida-set crime drama has been axed by the cable network after four seasons. The most recent edition averaged 2.6 million viewers on Monday nights. Fun fact: The Glades was the first A&E scripted series to last more than one season.

According to Deadline, A&E and Warner Bros. have no comment and insiders cautioned that the two sides have yet to finalize a deal. There has been some speculation that a deal could include A&E taking some ownership in the show.

A&E is renewing Longmire. Following a season finale that posted highs, the cable network is planning to renew the scripted drama for a third season. Scripted drama Longmire starring Robert Taylor gets third season After a strong season finale, A&E are planning to renew the scripted drama series for another season, reports The Hollywood Reporter. The news came via co-creator and executive producer John Coveny on Twitter who posted "Thanks to the 5 million plus weekly fans (live+7). Young and older skewing alike! The call just came: Season 3 for #Longmire is a Go!" The sophomore season landed 3.7 million average viewers of which 942,000 were in the 18-49 year-old demographic and 1.2 million in the 25-54 demo.

Last Monday saw the season finale of Bates Motel on A&E Network. This week saw the return of The Glades and Longmire, both of which saw viewership growth over their previous season premieres. The Season 4 debut of Glades was watched by 3.3 million viewers Monday at 9 Pm. That’s up 6% for the scripted drama over its Season 3 debut on June 3 last year. However, Glades was down in adults 18-49 and adults 25-54, getting 904,000 viewers in the 18-49 compared to 1.1 million for Season 3′s debut. In 25-54, Glades Season 4 premiere slid from 1.4 million to 1 million. The second A&E season premiere of the night saw Longmire back for Season 2. The Wyoming-based crime drama bopped up 5% from its freshman-season debut with 4.3 million viewers, rising 12% in both 18-49 and 25-52 over its June 3 series premiere. The Glades is produced by Fox Television Studios with Innuendo Productions’ Clifton Campbell and Grand Productions’ Gary Randall as EPs.

A&E has shown it has a soft spot for pilots starring Katee Sackhoff and a former Agent from The Matrix. After the network decided not to pick up Big Mike last month, it looked a sure thing Longmire would be picked up instead. The show will air its pilot along with nine newly ordered episodes. Longmire is based on the Walt Longmire Mystery novels written by Craig Johnson. Robert Taylor (he was one of the few Matrix Agents not played by Hugo Weaving) plays the man the show and novels are named after, Walt Longmire. He’s the dedicated and unwavering sheriff of Absaroka County. Recently widowed, he hides his pain behind his charisma and dry wit.

Longmire is named after its central character, Walt Longmire (Taylor), the charismatic, dedicated and unflappable sheriff of Absaroka County, Wyo. Widowed only a year, he is a man in psychic repair but buries his pain behind his brave face, unassuming grin and dry wit. Sackhoff, repped by Gersh and Bleu, will play one of Walt's deputies, hired six months ago after working homicide in Philadelphia for five years. Her relationship with Walt is filled with a playful give-and-take, while a deeper connection and sexual tension simmers beneath. Sackhoff, who co-starred on the final season of 24, recently did an arc on CSI. Phillips, repped by Global Artists and Thruline, will play Walt's best friend.

Actress Katee Sackhoff ("Battlestar Galactica") will star as a police deputy for Wyoming Sheriff 'Walt Longmire' in the A&E TV pilot "Longmire", adapting the mystery novels by author Craig Johnson.

The Warner Horizon production teleplay is by John Coveny, for Golden Globe and Emmy award winning executive producers Greer Shephard and Michael M. Robin ("The Closer") of The Shephard/Robin Company. Hunt Baldwin and writer Coveny also executive produce.

Johnson's 'Sheriff Walt Longmire' novels include "The Cold Dish", "Death Without Company", "Kindness Goes Unpunished", "Another Man's Moccasins", "The Dark Horse" and "Junkyard Dogs".

Battlestar Galactica alum Katee Sackhoff has joined the A&E pilot Longmire, in which she'll play a deputy opposite Robert Taylor's Wyoming sheriff.

The drama will be directed by Greg Yaitanes and written by Hunt Baldwin, John Coveny and Craig Allen Johnson, who wrote the book series on which the pilot is based.
