Looking back at the Akshay Kumar starred Patiala House with director Nikhil Advani and Subhash K Jha.
It takes us just five minutes to get a hang of this film’s narrative structure. As nimbly- paced as a fast-bowler playing cricket in a wide-open field trying to avoid all the roar of and din of the cheering crowds in the pavilion. For a film that has a surprisingly large number of characters, the noise decibel is surprisingly low. The clamour of a crowded Sikh household in London never overpowers the emotional kernel of this film.
The delicate supple bonds that grow among people who are not just maladjusted in a foreign land but are also spiritual and emotional misfits in their own household are brought out in vignettes that show the hand of a confident storyteller. Nikhil Advani’s admirable episodic structure of Salaam-e-Ishq failed because of its inordinate length.

Disney+ Hotstar has been on a roll these last few months with their content releases across several languages. Kaala, the brand-new Disney+ Hotstar special, is created and directed by Bejoy Nambiar, who is known for presenting out-of-the-box stories from the crime drama and action thriller genres. The subject matter of the show, as shown in the trailer, is the underhand hawala dealings done by businessmen, corrupt politicians, and drug lords. Hawala, in layman terms, is the money that is transferred without actually physically moving it. The name Bejoy Nambiar is enough to create a sense of intrigue in the viewer.
Kaala, which essentially means black, in the trailer of the show takes us through the underbelly of black money, money laundering, and the nexus around it. There is always an honest officer who is trying to do right by breaking up rackets in shows like this. Kaala is all about...

Economists around the world infer that the presence of a ‘benevolent patriarch’ in a household provides for harmony and peace in a family. It surely is male-dominated frivolous thinking, but this insane precedent of women being unnoticed, unheard, unseen, and underrepresented leaves us alarmed and concerned. Millions of women go missing, and the biased economy, the social system and the government abandon them to be victims of socio-economic deprivation. In “Unseen,” when Maxwell Mwale is imprisoned and accused of the murder of Yazid Noordien, and later when he is released from jail but doesn’t return home, it unsettles his wife, Zenzile Mwale, making her vulnerable to bias, abuse, sexism, having her dignity violated, and the trauma of losing her beloved husband and Esulu, her son. She is a cleaner, and therefore, no one cares whether she exists or not. Her actions, though invisible, give her an upper hand, allowing...

When Bhavnani first wrote a horror story ‘Bearlike Man’ that was selected at Bifan (Korea), the largest genre festival in Asia, she found herself to be the first Indian woman director to be on the platform ever.
"We were practically non-existent in that space. Over the three decades I looked at, 9.9 per cent of directors were women. Horror comes with just 5.9 per cent of directors being women and Sci-fi – 2.8 per cent. I find this statistic offensive. Wench 2022 showcased 47 horror /sci-fi/fantasy films — 43 of them directed by women," she tells Ians.
Believing that India has not really explored horror in its truest potential or form, the filmmaker feels there is no better medium to highlight social change than this genre.
"And there are so many different ways to make them instead of the cliche knee-jerk horror that we all know of," she asserts.

Qala marks the second collaboration between Anvita Dutt, Tripti Dimri and Anushka Sharma’s Clean Slate Filmz after “Bulbbul”. Both a melancholic social tragedy, while “Bulbbul” explores the themes of the sexual violence that wreaks horror in the lives of women, “Qala” sheds light on the plight of women in the Hindi music industry- predominantly a man’s world. But there is more to this movie than what meets the eye. A visually striking film with moths, metaphors and music encapsulates the plummeting mental health of the titular woman
Set back and forth in Calcutta and exquisite snow-capped Himachal, “Qala” is the story of an aspiring singer who yearns for the affection and validation of her formidable mother Urmila (Swastika Mukherjee), a thumri singer past her prime. It starts with Qala receiving the “Golden Vinyl” for her exemplary voice and contribution to Hindi music. The rest of...

Qala is an Indian psychological-drama written and directed by Anvita Dutt Guptan, starring Tripti Dimri.
A slightly different feature film to what Netflix has previously brought to us recently. You can expect a slow-paced movie that tells a very sad story of a tormented celebrity, which is not based on real life events.
Premise
Qala is a talented and accomplished singer, who despite her success is tormented by her past in which her mother, especially, played a quite nefarious role.
Movie Review
A psychological-drama that borders the horror movie line. We follow the protagonist throughout the entire feature, in a story that is slow paced, and very dramatic.
Qala (2022)
With its good photography, and subdued tones the scene is set for the story of a tormented national superstar (played by Tripti Dimri). Following the character from her childhood, with an overbearing and demanding mother (played by Swastika Mukherjee) to her...

Late Irrfan Khan’s son and debutant Babil Khan has shared a unique anecdote on how his father helped him meet God at the age of 10. Babil said: “For 9 days straight my father put me on the water with my back on the water and let me go, and for the 9 days straight I hesitated, splashed around, tried to regain control, and every day we tried again. On the 10th day, I was bored, I had lost all interest in meeting God.”
“I just wanted to go back to my world, and on the 10th day, I didn’t hesitate, didn’t try to regain control and I allowed the river to take me. Baba watched me float away, as the rock was about to hit me, he lifted me off the water and he said ‘today you were brave, today you surrendered, today, you met God. OTTDespite its problems, 'Bubbul' achieves what it sets out to do - it is a fairy tale like no other. Geetika MantriThe witch, the dayan, the chudail… these were common characters in the ghost stories that many of us listened to when growing up. The trope was similar – an ugly, supernatural woman who was evil, sadistic and would inflict harm. Today, these words are used as derogatory terms to describe women who are different from the ‘ideal’, such as if they speak too loudly, don’t smile enough, don’t fit unrealistic beauty standards, work in their self-interest and so on. The trajectory has been similar elsewhere too – women who were targeted in the Salem witch trials in the Us in the 17th century were arguably those who did not conform to gendered social expectations at the time. In this context, Bulbbul offers a refreshing take on these sexist characterisations...

Gori Tere Pyaar Mein (Gtpm) undeniably has big shoes to fill. It marks the return of not one but two winning combos from the house of Dharma Productions, Imran Khan and Punit Malholtra (I Hate Luv Storys) and Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor (Ek Main Aur Ek Tu). Needless to say, expectations are running on overdrive.
Vishal Dadlani and Shekhar Ravjiani who previously scored for I Hate Luv Storys to great applause are at the helm of Gtpm, creating yet another set of expectations to triumph over. India’s first Facebook love story, Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge suddenly goes berserk with a thumping party track called ‘DheaonDheaon’. ‘DheaonDheaon’ is a tribute to the South Indian street music form of Dappan Koothu. Giving it a unique spin is the fusion with Hip-Hop and Rap. The track has some really mad lyrics penned by Anvita Dutt – so much so that a Karaoke singalong version has been released to punch that harder. Scored by Raghu Dixit, one of the country’s most talented indie musicians, Dheaon Dheaon has been sung by Vishal Dadlani and Aditi Singh Sharma featuring rap by Machas with Attitude.
This is the second track from the film’s album which is scheduled to release shortly and is apparently already a rage across several campuses due to an innovating sampling exercise done at key colleges. The music video features the entire cast in an outrageous party rocking away the night.
