Angelo Defanti’s three-part Netflix docuseries “A Tragedy Foretold: Flight 3054” belongs firmly in the latter category, examining Latin America’s deadliest aviation disaster with the forensic precision of a coroner and the moral clarity of a prosecutor’s closing argument.

The bare facts read like a nightmare: July 17, 2007, São Paulo’s Congonhas Airport, a rain-soaked evening that claimed 199 lives when Tam Airlines Flight 3054 skidded off the runway and slammed into a Tam Express warehouse. ‘My Favourite Cake,’ Girls Will Be Girls’ Win Berlinale Co-Production Market Awards

Projects from France-Iran and India were the big winners at this year’s Berlinale Co-Production Market, which is part of the European Film Market.

The Eurimages Co-Production Development Award, endowed with €20,000, went to the producers of Caractères Productions from France, and Honare Khiyal from Iran for their project “My Favourite Cake” by directors Behtash Sanaeeha and Maryam Moghaddam.

The Vff Talent Highlight Award with prize money of €10,000 went to director Shuchi Talati’s “Girls Will Be Girls.” The film is to be produced by Pushing Buttons Studios, an outfit founded by Indian actors Ali Fazal (“Death on the Nile”) and Richa Chadha (“Gangs of Wasseypur”) and co-produced by Sanjay Gulati and Pooja Chauhan of Crawling Angel Films (2020 Berlinale selection “The Shepherdess and the Seven Songs”) and Claire Chassagne of Dolce Vita Films (2019 Venice and Cairo winner “A Son”).

Galway Film Fleadh unveils line-up of enticing new Irish titles

The hybrid festival will showcase 11 world premieres.

Seán Breathnach’s Irish-language drama Foscadh, Ross Killeen’s music documentary Love Yourself Today and Graham Cantwell’s coming-of-age drama Who We Love are among several new Irish films making their world premiere at the hybrid Galway Film Fleadh which is running from July 20th to 25th.

The Fleadh will showcase 45 features, 11 of which are world premieres. The main physical venue will be an outdoor cinema in the city’s historic centre this year and many of the titles will also screen online along with the programme of industry events and filmmaker discussions.

Annecy, France – Three projects created and produced by young Latin American talent, Nadia Ronquillo and Bernardita Ojeda’s ‘Tally Molly,’ Arturo and Roy Ambriz’ “La balada del Fénix” and “Distrito Yorudan” will be pitched on June 12 at Annecy’s Mifa, brought onto the market by Animation!, the Ventana Sur animation forum.

A 7-minute 26 episode show, “Tally Molly” follows a cheerful 7-year-old girl who’s able to change her size to be as little as bacteria or as big as a mountain. Series deals with ordinary situations which becomes extraordinary, via the discovery of new worlds and friends. Chile’s Pájaro Estudio produces, in collaboration with development studio Kaleidos.

‘The Good Intentions,’ ‘Two Little Birds,’ ‘Immaculate’ Win Big at Ventana Sur
Buenos Aires — “The Good Intentions,” the first feature of Argentina’s Argentina’s Ana García Blaya, won two industry prizes, including the top European Vision Prize, at the 2018 10th Ventana Sur, which wraps Dec. 14 in Buenos Aires. It shared a third.

The award sweep, for a title in pix-in-pose section Primer Corte, was always on the cards. The father-daughter drama – in which a young girl, shunted between her divorced parents, has to choose between gong to live abroad with her mother or staying with her feckless father – played to applause and even, reportedly, some tears at an industry screening Thursday.

“It’s a portrait of a 2.0 family,” said Bruno Deloye, at France’s Cine + Club, which adjudicated the prize with Le Film Français’ Francois-Pier Pelinard-Lambert and Louise Ronzet from Udi, the latter two representing TitraFilms and Gomedia.

Ventana Sur’s Animation! Marks Latin America’s Toon Surge
Madrid — TV shows “Yorudan District,” and “The Pleasefixers” and animated feature “The Ballad of the Phoenix” are potential standouts at Ventana Sur’s 3rd Animation! showcase, which looks set to underscore the burgeoning strength of Latin American animation, and its drive to put into place stronger infrastructures to bulwark a more organized and sustainable growth.

Also sparking good word, among feature projects, are “El Paraíso” and Brazil’s “Cachalote,” and works-in-progress titles “Ainbo, Spirit of the Amazon” and “A Costume for Nicolas.”

The 15 projects were chosen from 180 applications, an Animation! record. 11 of the 15 projects are market debuts. That’s just one sign of Latin America’s robust growth in animation over recent years. According to industry org statistics aired at April’s first Quirino Ibero-American Animation Awards in Tenerife, Mexico has 16 animated features in production or pre-production, Brazil 25 titles in production, and Argentina more than 20 projects in development, Animation! co-ordinator Silvina Cornillón pointed out.

Cannes: The Producers Network to showcase Brazilian, Palestinian projects
Exclusive: Palestinian hybrid work Ghost Hunting and Brazil’s The Trace [pictured] among works to be presented.

The Marché du Film’s Producers Network at the Cannes Film Festival (May 11-22) will put the spotlight on film projects from Brazil and Palestine this year in two separate sessions scheduled for one of its networking breakfasts.

The initiative adds a new dimension to the traditional breakfast “Spotlights” which have previously focused on producers from different territories.

“The idea is to do brief presentations of the projects at the beginning of the breakfasts so that those who are interested can then set up individual meetings,” said Marché chief Jerome Paillard.

“We’re not trying to branch into co-production in any big way, the Cannes Atélier already does that, we just want to set up a framework to support these projects.”

The five other “Spotlights” will present producers from South Africa (Kwazulu Natal Region), the Netherlands, Mexico, Canada...
