Exclusive: Apple is in early development on a limited series about Claus von Bülow, the socialite who was accused in 1981 of attempting to murder his wife Sunny. Adolescence creator Jack Thorne is attached to write and executive produce.
The project, which attracted multiple bidders, is produced by Story Syndicate through its deal with Tomorrow Studios (an ITV Studios partner). Tomorrow Studios will produce and serve as studio. Pressman Film will also produce.
A rep for Apple declined comment.
In 1990, the von Bülow story was told on the big screen in Reversal of Fortune, which starred Glenn Close and Jeremy Irons and was produced by Edward R. Pressman and Oliver Stone. It was based on the 1986 book Reversal of Fortune: Inside the von Bülow Case, written by then-law professor Alan Dershowitz. Irons earned an Oscar for his portrayal of the lawyer-turned-socialite.
The movie recounts how Sunny endured a diabetic shock and fell into a coma.

Exclusive: The BBC smashed its creative diversity targets by £60M ($80M) last year, as the person responsible for ensuring the corporation works with under-represented voices tells us her team is now completely embedded in the commissioning process.
Revealed in its BBC Commissioning Report for the year to March 31 2025, the broadcaster said it spent £140M on shows that qualify for its creative diversity commitment, when its target was to spend around £80M. This figure bested the previous year’s spend by £35M and means the BBC is on its way to comfortably beating its target of spending £240M on both TV and radio across the three years to 2027.
Jessica Schibli, the BBC’s Head of Creative Diversity, told us the “whopping increase” is the result of a shift in “mindset perspective” that has seen her team become “integrated and fully woven through every ounce” of the TV commissioning process.

The 2025 Primetime Emmy nominations have been announced, and many fan favorites, returning series, and brand-new efforts have been recognized by the Television Academy. As IndieWire’s Marcus Jones predicted, the 2025 Emmys are one of the tightest races in recent years with a slew of returning winners side by side in competition with new buzzy series.
The Television Academy’s 24,000 members certainly have their work cut out for them as past Emmy winners like “Severance,” “The White Lotus,” “The Last of Us,” “Squid Game,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Hacks,” “The Bear,” “Abbott Elementary,” “Only Murders in the Building,” and “What We Do in the Shadows” are all back in contention for more awards.
And that’s not even mentioning the slew of star-studded series that debuted this year: “The Pitt,” “Paradise,” “The Studio,” “Dying for Sex,” and IndieWire Honors-recognized “Adolescence” all have become critically acclaimed hits.

Who will have the write stuff at the Emmys? When it comes to Best Limited Series/Movie Writing, it becomes a bit of a numbers game.
With 71 submissions, this year's Best Limited Series/Movie Writing category will have just five finalists when the nominations are announced Tuesday. This is only the second time since the expansion to the popular vote that this category will result in five nominees; the first since 2020. Last year, for example, there were six nominees, with Baby Reindeer ultimately prevailing.
In the limited-series race, there are several shows with writers who scripted all their episodes and thus must enter their entire series: Adolescence by Jack Thorne and star Stephen Graham, Disclaimer by Alfonso Cuarón, and Dope Thief by Peter Craig. With Adolescence being the front-runner to win Best Limited since its premiere, the Netflix psychological crime drama is a lock for a writing bid. The other two,...

New images from Disney's Tron: Areshave entered The Grid… the Instagram grid, that is. The snaps caused quite a stir on social media as they turned the spotlight on two of the film's major villainous characters, who threaten to be even more evil than Jared Leto's titular antagonist in the highly anticipated third installment of the groundbreaking Tron franchise. Marvel favorite Evan Peters and The X-Files leading lady Gillian Anderson both feature in the photos, offering a better look at their roles as Julian and Elisabeth Dillinger, respectively.
Fans of the Tron saga will recognize the Dillinger name. Ed Dillinger (David Warner) was the ruthless head of Encom in Disney's 1982 film, while his son, Ed Jr. (Cillian Murphy), made a cameo appearance in the 2010 sequel Tron: Legacy. The Dillinger dynasty will live on in the third feature, Tron: Ares, as Peters steps out as Julian, a new addition to the family lineage,...

Exclusive: Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones, co-creators of hit anthology series Black Mirror, have left their Netflix-owned production company Broke & Bones.
The Emmy winners have stepped down as directors of Broke & Bones, five years after founding the company and securing investment from Netflix in a first-of-its-kind deal.
Deadline first revealed the $100M agreement in 2020, which we noted at the time was structured over five years. Brooker and Jones have reached the end of this term and are leaving.
Netflix declined to comment.
Black Mirror has not been formally renewed beyond Season 7 by Netflix, but the streamer is said to be committed to the series. Brooker and Jones’ exit from Broke & Bones is unlikely to change this.
Theoretically, they could now consider working on projects for other streamers or networks, given they were exclusive to Netflix at Broke & Bones.

Ben Taylor wanted to direct Joy from the first moment he learned of the script, which chronicles the uphill journey of three British innovators who made in vitro fertilization a reality in the 1970s. Not only had the Sex Education director and executive producer been a longtime fan of Jack Thorne, who worked with his wife, screenwriter Rachel Mason, on the story, but Taylor also shared an affinity with the project and its writers. “I needed to do the job because IVF has been a huge part of my life over the last 10 years. I was desperate to be a part of it if possible,” says Taylor, whose family — along with Thorne and Mason’s — benefited from the technology.

For years, there have been cries for a thorough, big-budget biopic centered on music's most famous quartet: The Beatles. Now, not only are we getting one, but we're getting four, with director Sam Mendes bringing the personal and professional lives of John, Paul, George, and Ringo to the big screen in a cinematic event truly like no other. As the director told a packed audience at the CinemaCon market event earlier this year, "We need big cinematic events to get people out of the house."
Currently, Harris Dickinson is set to appear as John Lennon, Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison, and, finally, Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, with the trio of Jez Butterworth, Peter Straughan, and Adolescence's Jack Thorne penning each script. However, it seems as if the trio have had help piecing together the story from one of the two remaining members of the Fab Four.

With theaters preparing for a British Invasion ahead of the upcoming Beatles cinematic event in 2028, Ringo Starr is making sure the movies get it right.
After flying to London in April to meet with director Sam Mendes, the Beatles drummer revealed he had issues with how his first marriage to Maureen Starkey Tigrett was depicted in the script for the upcoming four-part biopic about the legendary British rock band, which is penned by Jez Butterworth, Peter Straughan and Jack Thorne.
“He had a writer — very good writer, great reputation, and he wrote it great, but it had nothing to do with Maureen and I,” Starr explained to The New York Times. “That’s not how we were. I’d say, ‘We would never do that.'”
Starr is now pleased with his depiction in the script, but he remains skeptical of how Mendes will shoot four films at a time.

Don’t worry, Beatles fan: Ringo Starr is involved in that upcoming four-part Beatles biopic. The iconic drummer recently told The New York Times that he met with director Sam Mendes to go through one of the scripts line-by-line. The duo collaborated together for two days in April 2025.
While Starr did not cite which out of the assumed four scripts he reviewed, Jez Butterworth (“Ford v Ferrari”), Peter Straughan (“Conclave”) and Jack Thorne (“Adolescence”) are all announced as writing the screenplays.
Starr said he gave “extensive notes” to director Mendes while fact-checking the scripts. The scenes in particular that depicted Starr’s family and his first wife, Maureen Starkey Tigrett (whose casting has not yet been announced), were among the sequences that Starr urged to have reworked.

A Quadruple Feature On February 20, 2024, Sony Pictures released the news that they were undertaking what may very well be revolutionary in the world of cinema in this, the Information Age. Sir Sam Mendes Cbe made his name in the theatre originally, with a signature darker aesthetic on beloved classic musicals with his 1993 revival of 'Cabaret', 1994 revival of 'Oliver!', and 2003 revival of 'Gypsy'. It was the former two productions that first intrigued Steven Spielberg with Mendes, and why Spielberg- whose company DreamWorks had bought Alan Ball’s script for 'American Beauty'- hired Sam Mendes to direct the film, winning Mendes the Best Directing Oscar for this, his film debut, springboarding a career of consistently brilliant films. It’s this kind of record that has apparently imbued Sony with the confidence to back this historic project. The Sony press release reads as follows: “As conceived by Mendes,...

The Tron series is back with a new movie called Tron: Ares, set to release in theaters on October 10, 2025. This film promises to take visual effects to a new level, continuing the franchise’s tradition of being ahead in technology. Director Joachim Rønning told Empire magazine that working on this project feels like chasing “the Holy Grail of computer graphics.”
One unique idea in the movie is how the camera work is done. Rønning explained, “The concept was that a program is filming a program. So it’s shot by a robot.” This means the scenes are captured as if a machine is recording other digital programs, giving the movie a fresh visual style.

The Tron franchise is getting a fresh new chapter with the upcoming film, Tron: Ares, set to hit theaters on October 10, 2025. This new movie promises to push the boundaries of visual effects once again, continuing the series’ tradition of leading-edge technology. Director Joachim Rønning shared with Empire magazine that working on Tron: Ares feels like chasing “the Holy Grail of computer graphics.”
He explained that the film will use innovative camera work that mimics how a machine would film, saying, “The concept was that a program is filming a program. So it’s shot by a robot.”
Tron has always been about imagining a digital world ahead of its time. The original 1982 film was a pioneer in visual effects, and Tron: Legacy in 2010 raised the bar even higher with its neon-lit digital universe called The Grid.
Now, Tron: Ares aims to bring this vision into a new era by mixing the virtual and real worlds.

'We Can't Make This': Adolescence Creators Recall Surprising Reason Amazon Passed on the Netflix Hit
Adolescence became a huge phenomenon when it was released this year... but it was almost never made at all.
The crew who made the show talked about recently to Vulture. It all started withBoiling Point, a one-take kitchen drama movie starring Adolescence star Stephen Graham and directed by Philip Barantini. It caught the attention of Brad Pitt's production company Plan B - Pitt and Graham are actually friends - and they asked if the duo had anything else they were working on. Thus, the seed of what would eventually become Adolescence was born. But it wasn't all plain sailing from there.
Plan B had an exclusive first-look deal with Amazon, and so for a while it seemed like Amazon would be airing the show. Graham hired acclaimed writer Jack Thorne to write the show with him, and they got started on a pilot script. There was just one problem: after they delivered the script,...

One hit 2025 Netflix series that surpassed Stranger Things in viewership nearly didn't get made after it was passed on by another major streaming platform. Stranger Things season 4 became Netflix's most-viewed English-language TV season of all time when it was released back in May 2022, only to be surpassed by Wednesday season 1 in November of that year. According to Netflix, Stranger Things season 4 remains third on its list of most-viewed original English-language TV content on the global streaming charts with 140.7 million views worldwide. Wednesday season 1 still tops that list with an astounding 252.1 million views.
2022 was a historic year for Netflix, with three of its top four most-viewed English-language original franchise seasons of all time releasing within a span of six months. Only one show in 2025, or in the last three years for that matter, has entered the Top 5 most-viewed English-language TV seasons pool, and stands alone as the most-viewed limited series on Netflix of all time.

After more than a decade-long hiatus from the big screen, Shane Meadows is making a return to cinema with a new film, Chork.
Penned by Adolescence writer Jack Thorne and set along the east coast of England, Chork follows 15-year-old Kit and 11-year-old Ani as they leave their foster home and trek across the coastline in hopes of a brighter future. With the police in pursuit and a national search underway, Kit must use all her determination and wits to protect Ani and fulfil their mission.
Cast by Meadows’ frequent collaborator, Shaheen Baig (Adolescence, Hot Milk), the two have secured the film’s lead cast with open casting calls taking place earlier in the year throughout the U.K.
“To be returning to film after 17 years, writing alongside ‘megadude’ Jack Thorne again, and working with so many gifted collaborators, has been an absolute privilege,” said Meadows. “Our story follows two beyond bright,...
