Vimeo Unveils 2024 Staff Picks ‘Best of the Year’ Awards and Breakout Creators List
Image
The coveted Vimeo “Best of the Year” awards have been announced.

In its 17th year, the annual awards celebrate the most outstanding shorts and video creators on the independent platform. Many “Best of the Year” alumni have later won Academy Awards, Sundance Awards, Cannes prizes, and more. The Vimeo Curation Team reviews thousands of films to select the winners based on originality, technical excellence, storytelling impact, and overall artistic merit.

“We’re proud to highlight the most iconic short films and branded content of 2024,” Ina Pira, Head of Curation at Vimeo, told IndieWire. “These films are the very best of those that received ‘Staff Picks,’ which in its 17th year is still curated by humans sifting through and handpicking the best work shared on Vimeo.”

Pira cited highlight films including Bill Morrison’s surveillance and body cam documentary “Incident” and Renee Zhan’s live action and animated film “SHÉ (Snake)” as standout originals.

Over 8,400 short films were submitted for the 2nd annual Sony Future Filmmaker Awards in Los Angeles, but only six filmmakers walked away with a win Thursday night.

148 countries were represented at the event held at the Cary Grant Theatre on the Sony Pictures Studios lot, with films competing in six categories: Fiction, Non-Fiction, Environment, Animation, Student and Future Format.

Created by Creo and sponsored by Sony, the black tie affair hosted by “Entertainment Tonight” correspondent Denny Directo was preceded by a week-long industry immersion program and workshops with established Hollywood executives.

Winners were selected by a group of industry experts — including Sony Pictures Classics cofounders/co-presidents Michael Barker and Tom Bernard, and cinematographers Rob Hardy and Kate Reid, with Unjoo Moon and Robert

Primes selecting the initial longlist. Director Justin Chadwick chaired both selection processes.

10 Essential Short Films from London Film Festival 2023
Image
It’s always hard to pinpoint what it is the short films of London Film Festival share because, as we’ve witnessed time and time again, the selection is always so eclectic. Short films of such varying budgets, genres and tones sit side by side with one another, a refreshing change to see at such a prestigious film festival. It puts precedence on an ideas-led cinema as opposed to one led by technical innovations and the flashiest kit. That’s not to say the shorts at Lff don’t look good or have great production value, because they do, but it’s more about what this says to up-and-coming filmmakers who don’t have massive resources behind them. It tells you that all you need is to be clever with what you have around you and you can have a film playing at the UK’s biggest film festival. With that in mind,...

A Starving Wolf Crawls Inside Human Skin in Solmund MacPherson’s Absurd Comedy ‘Wolf in Dude’s Clothing’
Image
Solmund MacPherson is a filmmaker who you can always rely on to deliver work that catches you off guard. Dn last spoke to him for his incredible film A Short Documentary About People Fighting which looked at a group study where violence between individuals was entirely consensual. The result was a short that was uncomfortable to watch yet deeply compelling in its deconstruction of violent habits. The same can be said for his latest film, a narrative short entitled Wolf in Dude’s Clothing. MacPherson casts his eye onto more comedic territory this time around but still maintains an explorative eye towards the absurdity of human interactions, a staple theme throughout MacPherson’s work. The film follows, as the title suggests, a wolf who finds the skin of a person in a forest that he decides to inhabit to get a taste of the human condition. Dn first caught Wolf...
