Jeff Bridges Shares Positive Health Update After Cancer Battle
Image
There's nothing better than hearing a positive update from someone who opened up about their private health battles. Nearly five years ago, Jeff Bridges announced that he had been diagnosed with lymphoma, a blood cancer. The Academy Award winner also shared, about four years ago, that he was in remission. Now, Bridges has another update for supporters who were rooting for him along the way of his journey. They'll be happy to know that the Iron Man actor said he is doing "very well" in an interview with People on May 9.

"I'm feeling good," he said. However, he revealed that he is facing some health challenges following a battle with Covid-19 during his chemo treatment. "Some things, it's hard to tell if it's the cancer and the Covid or if it's just old age." The 75-year-old also said that sometimes his memory is an issue, but he believes it's a long-term Covid effect.

Nicholas Brown, Matt Day, Tim Draxl, and Jada Alberts in In Our Blood (2023)
In Our Blood Review – Glasgow FrightFest 2025
Nicholas Brown, Matt Day, Tim Draxl, and Jada Alberts in In Our Blood (2023)
The thrill of the unexpected gives In Our Blood its edge and one that’s sharp in this well executed thriller.

Showing as part of the FrightFest strand of the Glasgow Film Festival it marks the movies UK premiere and feature debut for director Pedro Kos. By no means new to the game, this Oscar-nominated documentary-filmmaker puts those skills to good use and incredibly so with the style adopted in this movie.

The story starts in-medias-res where we are introduced to Emily (Brittany O’Grady), a documentary-filmmaker who along with her cinematographer Danny (E.J Bonilla) returns to her hometown to reconnect with her estranged mother, Sam (Alanna Ubach), who is a recovering addict.

Opting for in-medias-res can often give way to a muddled timeline that is confusing and clunky but Kos avoids these pitfalls entirely to produce a story that is structurally sound and clear to follow.

From the very offset...

FX Reveals the Fate of Jeff Bridges' The Old Man
Image
Two months after the Season 2 finale, the future of The Old Man on FX has been revealed. Unfortunately, it's not good news for fans of the series.

Per Deadline, FX has officially canceled The Old Man after two seasons, so there will not be a third season of the Jeff Bridges-led series. The show meeting its fate comes after wading through some troubled waters with its production for its two seasons. Season 1 began development in 2019 and was forced to shut down with just three episodes left to film because of the pandemic in 2020. Filming was further postponed as Bridges underwent cancer treatment; he announced in 2021 that his cancer was in remission, and production on The Old Man resumed in 2022.

‘The Old Man’ Canceled By FX After 2 Seasons
Image
Exclusive: Jeff Bridges’ Dan Chase is going permanently off the grid. FX has opted not to renew drama The Old Man for a third season.

The series, which also stars John Lithgow, Amy Brenneman and Alia Shawkat, became largely a victim of circumstance. Over its two seasons, The Old Man’s production was halted several times.

Its seven-episode first season started filming in 2019 and had three episodes left when it shut down at the start of the pandemic and later that year for star Bridges’ cancer treatment.

The Old Man launched on FX in June 2022, scoring the most-watched cable series premiere since January 2021, beating 60 other premium and basic cable dramas, comedies and limited series, while also becoming the most-watched FX series debut on Hulu in its opening weekend.

The strong showing earned The Old Man a Season 2 renewal. It was another unplanned production shutdown during the filming of the second season,...

While some action TV shows are canceled too soon, the appearance of an A-lister often helps keep a series on the air. This is proved in other genres, too, and there are many great crime TV shows with A-List actors. From action-packed sequences with brilliant explosions and tense situations to subtler scenes with unexpected deaths and violence, these A-List actors are fantastic additions to these TV shows.

The Old Man Season 2: Jeff Bridges Drama Dealt a Huge Blow with Divided Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Jeff Bridges return to FX in Season 2 of The Old Man was always going to have a tough time matching the near perfect critical response to Season 1. And so it has proven as the first episode of the new season has landed a split opinion from Rotten Tomatoes critics, debuting with a 50% Tomatometer score. While there have been only six reviews so far, that is a huge drop from the 97% rating held by Season 1.

The Old Man originally debuted in 2022 with strong viewership and an exceptional set of reviews to boot. Enlisting the star power of Bridges and Jon Lithgow, the first season may have delivered a slow-burn drama, but the sheer force of its leading stars was enough for many to go along for the ride. However, even though the two old men spend more time on screen together this time around, it seems that they have not managed...

The Old Man Season 2's Rotten Tomatoes Score Takes A Huge Dip From Season 1's Near Perfection
Image
The Old Man season 2 sees a significant drop in its Rotten Tomatoes score, especially compared to the near-perfection of the show's debut. Based on Tom Perry's 2017 novel, with the Oscar-winning actor Jeff Bridges in the lead role, the action thriller debuted on FX in June 2022. The story centers around a seemingly average older man with a dangerous past that comes back to haunt him. The Old Man season 2 is about to debut after a delay, premiering on FX on September 12 with two episodes, and streaming on Hulu the next day, but the reception has not been too positive.

Only six reviews have been added so far, which means the score is bound to fluctuate, but The Old Man season 2 started with just 50% on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics are evenly split, with three reviews that lean positive and three that lean negative. But it's a far cry from the reception...

Fantasia 2024 Review: In Our Blood is a Faux-Doc with Teeth
Image
Oscar-nominated documentarian Pedro Kos dips his toes into the horror genre with In Our Blood, but it's hardly a departure. Kos' choice to stylize In Our Blood as an in-progress faux-doc keys into his intimate perspective on storytelling. The real-world location of Las Cruces, New Mexico and its impoverished inhabitants is shown unaltered, since Kos strives to give a voice to the voiceless. Terror is second-fiddle to depicting marginalized American communities, which heavily favors unfolding drama over traditional ghoulish excitement. Kos's humanitarian instincts drive In Our Blood as he examines Las Cruces under a microscope, but not everyone will appreciate the film's "substance over scares" imbalance.

Brittany O'Grady stars as Emily Wyland, an estranged daughter shooting a reunion documentary with her recovering addict mother Sam (Alanna Ubach). Emily is flanked by cinematographer Danny Martinez (E.J. Bonilla), her only partner on the project. Everything starts awkwardly enough as Sam and Emily...

In Our Blood Review: Documentary Filmmaker Pedro Kos Enters The World of Found Footage with A Slow Burn Mystery #FantasiaFest
Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker Pedro Kos (Rebel Hearts) makes the jump into narrative features with his new Found Footage slow burn In Our Blood – a methodical mockumentary that follows a daughter documenting her attempt to reconnect with her mother after years of scare tissue and drug abuse. Set in the forgotten underbelly of Las Cruces, New Mexico In Our Blood travels lonely city streets populated with lost souls, deadly street gangs, and unsympathetic cops. It’s stunningly photographed and delivers one hell of a punch for patient viewers ready for a slow-release mystery.

Black Christmas (2019)‘s Brittany O’Grady stars as Emily, returning to her childhood home for the first time in years after receiving an apology letter from her mother Sam (Alanna Ubach, Legally Blonde). With her sound guy/cameraman/voice of reason Danny (E.J Bonilla, The Exorcist: Believer) along for the ride, she makes her way back home for an...

‘In Our Blood’ Review – Found Footage-Style Format Limits Fresh Take on Well-Worn Subgenre
Image
Oscar-nominated documentarian Pedro Kos approaches his narrative feature debut, In Our Blood, like a documentary. It’s even woven into the core fabric of the narrative, using the framework of filmmakers setting out to make a documentary to explore vulnerable communities through horror. While that ultimately means falling into the trappings of found footage-styled horror, Kos effectively gives a fresh update on a well-worn corner of the genre.

Filmmaker Emily Wyland (Brittany O’Grady) decides to make a documentary about her estranged mother, Sam (Alanna Ubach), when reuniting after ten years apart due to addiction. Emily enlists cinematographer Danny (E. J. Bonilla) to capture her intimate story, but the documentary’s purpose changes when Sam suddenly goes missing. In their search to find Sam and determine whether a relapse is to blame, Emily and Danny – with the help of local social worker Ana (Krisha Fairchild) – uncover sinister clues tied to her...

'In Our Blood' Review: An Audacious Horror Debut That'll Rip Your Throat Out
Image
There is no way to write about In Our Blood, the audacious narrative feature debut from documentary filmmaker Pedro Kos, without withholding as much as the film does. What can be said is that its a sly little horror movie starring Brittany O'Grady of the upcoming Its Whats Inside and E.J. Bonilla of last years The Exorcist: Believer. However, while both are no strangers to films that play around in as well as adjacent to the genre, their latest is something special all its own that defies any and all expectations. Written by Mallory Westfall, who previously worked on the stellar series Chucky, it wraps itself in the visual language of documentary filmmaking that it then proceeds to cannibalize in intriguing and incisive ways. Namely, this is a story with a mystery at its center that, by the time it reveals itself, had me levitating out of my chair in...

‘In Our Blood’ Review: A Murky Mystery of Disappearances In a Southwestern Community
Image
Once every year or two a movie comes along that brings fresh energy to the found-footage horror movie, a terrain that’s been mercilessly, repetitiously over-tilled since “The Blair Witch Project” broke out a quarter-century ago. Unfortunately, “In Our Blood” does not capture that prize for 2024. Though a notch above the subgenre’s norm in terms of acting and production polish, documentarian Pedro Kos’ first narrative feature — in which two filmmakers investigate mysterious disappearances around Las Cruces, New Mexico — ultimately teases expectations too long en route to an underwhelming resolution.

With overt horror elements delayed until the last 20 minutes or so, the film ends up feeling like an attenuated prologue for a series in the general conceptual (if not budgetary) wheelhouse of “Blade” or “Underworld.” But it’s anyone’s guess whether this Fantasia premiere will spark the kind of enthusiasm that merits a single follow-up, let alone several.

‘Chicago P.D.’: Marina Squerciati On How Art Imitates Life; That Surprise Proposal & Saying Goodbye To Tracy Spiridakos
Image
Spoiler Alert: The following story reveals major plot points from tonight’s episode of Chicago P.D. titled, “Safe Harbour.”

Officer Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) had her work cut out for her in tonight’s episode of NBC’s Chicago P.D. As the only Spanish speaker available to take on a case involving a murdered Venezuelan refugee, Burgess is all in but soon discovers a potential suspect is closer than she realizes.

Although the episode could’ve done a much better job in handling the controversial conversation around immigration—take a drink every time they use the word “illegal”—Burgess captivates in those moments where, instead of judging her fellow humanss, she goes into action while being sensitive to the plight of the refugees using humanity as her preferred weapon.

“Safe Harbour” opens with the slaying of a Venezuelan refugee who was shot to death in a drive-by shooting by an unknown assassin.

The Exorcist: What Happened To Chris & Regan Revealed
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for The Exorcist: Believer!

The Exorcist: Believer brings back Ellen Burstyn as Chris MacNeil, who spent the last 10 years studying exorcisms after her daughter's possession. Chris MacNeil became a world-famous exorcist specialist, leaving behind her previous life as an actress. Chris wrote a successful book about Regan's possession, but it caused a deterioration in their relationship, leading Regan to hate her mother. Regan went into hiding after the events of The Exorcist.

The Exorcist: Believer includes several reveals about what happened to Chris and Regan MacNeil after The Exorcist. Ellen Burstyn and Linda Blair's characters are no longer at the forefront of the franchise 50 years later, as the sequel shifts the narrative focus to Victor (Leslie Odom Jr.) and another family as their daughters are possessed by a demon. That leaves a lot of room in the franchise's timeline for their lives to advance and change.

The Exorcist: Believer's Major Cameo Explained By Director
Image
Warning: Contains spoilers for The Exorcist: Believer

Director David Gordon Green and producer Jason Blum discuss how they kept Linda Blair's surprise cameo in The Exorcist: Believer a secret. Blair's return had fans wondering if she would reprise her iconic role as Regan, but her lack of appearance is explained in the film. The short reunion scene between Blair and Ellen Burstyn was filmed in one take, with the crew unaware of Blair's presence, resulting in an emotional experience for everyone on set.

In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, director David Gordon Green and producer Jason Blum discussed actress Linda Blair's surprise cameo in The Exorcist: Believer and revealed how they kept her appearance in the film under wraps.

The supernatural horror film was directed by Green and written by Green and Peter Sattler. Exorcist: Believer stars Ellen Burstyn, Lidya Jewett, Olivia Marcum, Jennifer Nettles, Norbert Leo Butz,...

‘The Exorcist: Believer’ Review
Image
Lidya Jewett and Olivia O’Neill in ‘The Exorcist: Believer’ (Photo Credit: Universal Pictures)

Everything that sprouts from the soil of The Exorcist pales in comparison, with only Jeremy Slater’s The Exorcist series (canceled far too soon after just two seasons) living up to the standards of William Peter Blatty’s book and William Friedkin’s film adaptation. With the bar set incredibly high, the odds were against The Exorcist: Believer from the start. And, unfortunately, not even the much-ballyhooed return of Ellen Burstyn as Chris MacNeil can cast out the dreaded sequel demons.

The film kicks off with a flashback that only fills in minor story elements (since this is only part one of a planned trilogy). 13 years ago, married photographers Victor and Sorenne were visiting Haiti when a devastating earthquake struck the city. Victor escaped unharmed, but Sorenne was gravely injured. She survived just long enough to give birth to their daughter,...

The Exorcist: Believer Review
Image
Plot: After going missing for three days, two thirteen-year-old girls (Lidya Jewett & Olivia Marcum) return with no memory of their absence but exhibiting strange, violent behaviour that the father (Leslie Odom Jr) of one girl deduces is demonic possession.

Review: Pity poor David Gordon Green. While obviously a hardcore horror fan, the former indie darling took a critical mauling with Halloween Ends and seems doomed to repeat the experience with The Exorcist: Believer. It’s supposed to be the first entry in a new trilogy of Exorcist films, but the movie is so abysmal one shouldn’t hold out too much hope for a follow-up. While it may have a strong box-office opening, word of mouth seems sure to be dire. The only thing that saves Exorcist: Believer from being called the worst Exorcist movie ever is the fact that this particular series has some very bad entries.

‘The Exorcist: Believer’ Review: Leslie Odom Jr. Stars And Ellen Burstyn Returns In Head-Spinning Reboot With A Double Twist On 1973 Classic
Image
In the long history of horror films since the dawn of cinema, it would be hard to imagine any of them quite having the particular impact of 1973’s The Exorcist, which became the first horror film to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar along with nine other nominations including Best Actress for Ellen Burstyn. It eventually won two Academy Awards: for William Peter Blatty’s screenplay based on his 1971 novel, and for the bone-chilling sound work. When I saw it as a young kid in its original incarnation at the National Theatre in Westwood (now no longer existing), there were lines like you have never seen wrapping completely around the block. Warner Bros even put a nurse on duty in the lobby for those who passed out — no mere gimmick because it actually happened.

Nothing I have seen since in the genre has matched that one for me, but...

The Exorcist: Believer May Be Changing a Big Part of the Franchise
Image
Whether you saw The Exorcist: Believer trailer over the weekend in the previews before Oppenheimer, or you’re seeing it for the first time today as it’s released online, an impressive amount of callbacks, big and small, to the original 1973 masterpiece is there to greet you like the scarred lettering on Regan MacNeil’s tummy. There’s Ellen Burstyn, of course, finally returning for one of these demonic flicks for the first time in 50 years (and after she passed on John Boorman’s Exorcist II: The Heretic). But there’s also the way she’s greeted by one of the demonic girls in the movie, screaming in the exact same cadence as Linda Blair: “Mother, It hurts!” There are also dogs fighting in the sun; preternaturally green eyes peeking through scarred tissue; and more doctors who have absolutely no idea how to treat this type of illness.

Hell,...

‘The Old Man’ FX Series Shuts Down Season 2 Production Amid Writers Strike
Image
Exclusive: Filming on Season 2 of the FX drama series The Old Man, starring Jeff Bridges, is being suspended. We hear the crew of the series, produced by 20th Television, were alerted this morning of the decision to stop after today’s shoot, completing Episode 204.

According to sources, the plan had been to film through Episode 205 as five Season 2 scripts had been completed before the writers strike started on June 2. However, the last remaining script needed rewrites, so production will wrap now for the foreseeable future. It will resume sometime after the WGA work stoppage is over.

The set of the show in Santa Clarita has been picketed, causing some delays in production last Thursday. Accompanied by a producer, Bridges crossed the picket line in a van that day.

The Old Man, which is based on Thomas Perry’s bestselling book, also stars John Lithgow, Amy Brenneman, Alia Shawkat, E.J. Bonilla,...
