Buddy: Cristin Milioti, Topher Grace horror film adds child actress Delaney Quinn to the cast
Cristin Milioti
A couple of months ago, we heard that Cristin Milioti (The Penguin) was in early talks to take a role in the horror film The Backrooms, which is based on a series of viral videos. We were cautioned that Milioti’s involvement with The Backrooms was only 50-50 at that point, so it wasn’t entirely surprising when it came out that Milioti wouldn’t be in that movie after all. A couple weeks ago, it was revealed that Milioti is currently working on a different horror project, an independent horror thriller titled Buddy, from director Casper Kelly. Kelly was behind another viral sensation, the 11 minute short Too Many Cooks, which blew a lot of minds when it was released in 2014. Last week, we learned that Topher Grace (The Waterfront) is also in the cast. Now, Deadline reports that Milioti and Grace are joined by child actress Delaney Quinn.

Details on the characters Milioti,...

‘Fur coat, gun in hand, no rules’: Cristin Milioti on her ‘thrilling’ first Emmy nomination for playing Sofia Falcone in ‘The Penguin’
Image
Cristin Milioti is officially an Emmy nominee — but she's just as happy to see the show's behind-the-scenes talent be honored. “I'm so honored to be personally nominated,” she tells Gold Derby, “but also to see the amount that we got and to see so many of our departments get recognized — that was truly the most thrilling part.”

HBO's The Penguin, in which Milioti plays the fierce and unpredictable Sofia Falcone, amassed a total of 24 Emmy nominations, cementing its place as one of the year’s most celebrated shows. Notably, the series also brought first-time Emmy recognition not only to Milioti, but also to her co-stars Colin Farrell and Deirdre O’Connell.

Milioti’s fiery portrayal of Sofia has been heralded as one of the season’s standout performances — a gripping, slow-burn study in power and unpredictability. The series, a gritty expansion of Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe, throws Milioti into the dark underworld of Gotham,...

Emmys 2025 Voters’ Guide: Breaking Down the Early Frontrunners
Image
With a big variety of series, dozens of first-time nominees and a few shows breaking back into the race, the 77th annual Emmy Awards are set to make history — possibly in more ways than one. Below, Variety breaks down the contenders in some of the main categories.

Drama series

Arguably, the most stacked race of all this year is the drama category. Although “Severance,” “The Last of Us,” “Slow Horses” and “Andor” have landed nominations in the category before, none of this year’s noms have taken home the trophy in the past. “Severance” is an early front-runner but it’s not without its huge competitors in the debuts this year. “Paradise” on Hulu racked up four nominations for its freshman year on Hulu, and “The Diplomat” caused quite a splash with its second season on Netflix, but HBO Max’s “The Pitt” (with 13 noms) remains the biggest competitor against the Apple TV+ leader.

Topher Grace
Topher Grace Joins Unique Horror Movie ‘Buddy’ from ‘Too Many Cooks’ Director
Topher Grace
Actor Topher Grace has officially joined Buddy, a unique horror movie from Too Many Cooks and Adult Swim Yule Log director Casper Kelly, per THR.

Grace joins previously announced star Emmy-nominated actor Cristin Milioti (“The Penguin”).

Naturally, plot details are being kept under wraps at this time, but it’s described as a “new experience in horror.” Kelly co-wrote the script with Jamie King, who previously worked on the Disney+ family movie World’s Best. Considering Kelly’s attachment, it feels safe to assume that Buddy will live up to its “unique” descriptor.

Topher Grace is best known as the squeaky clean lead in the sitcom “That ’70s Show” and as Eddie Brock in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3, but has recently appeared in episodes of “The Twilight Zone” and “Love, Death, & Robots.” Most recently, the actor appeared in a brief cameo capacity in A24’s Heretic.

What does it mean to you to be recognized by the Academy for your performance?

Jason Isaacs (The White Lotus) I never dream about it; I never think about it. I do it for the doing of it. I can’t pretend it doesn’t feel lovely, but I just don’t take it personally. I’m just a conduit for bringing these wonderful stories to life. … The one thing the 23 nominations [that The White Lotus received] have in common is three-dimensional, surprising characters. Watching the final show, I was blown away by everybody; the standards across the board are so extraordinary. That’s because of the writing ability and how it lifts everyone up and encourages them to go bigger and more truthful.

Sipur Boards Hagai Levi Series ‘Etty’ & James Vanderbilt’s ‘Nuremberg’ As Israeli Studio Enters “Phase Two” Of Growth Plan
Image
Exclusive: Winning an Emmy for October 7 doc We Will Dance Again was a moment to take stock for Emilio Schenker, the co-founder of MGM-backed Israeli studio Sipur.

While he was delighted to be recognized with a gong that all TV producers dream about winning, the moment was bittersweet as it came just 48 hours after the death of Sipur President Michael Peter Schmidt.

Schmidt was a legend of the international TV game, a hugely popular, larger-than-life personality who Schenker said was nicknamed “the oracle.”

“Michael was in this industry for 35 years and he never won an Emmy,” Schenker told Deadline, sitting down with us in a coffee shop in Soho earlier this month. “And he won his first Emmy 48 hours after he died. So it was bittersweet. We dedicated the Emmy to him. He dedicated so much time and energy to this project.”

How I Met Your Mother’s Creator’s Bold Move to Escape the ‘Aging’ Problem of Cast Members Could’ve Easily Backfired
Image
To escape the aging problem of its cast members, Lyndsy Fonseca and David Henrie, the creators of How I Met Your Mother, Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, shot all of their scenes in Season 2 itself. In an interview with TV Gal, Thomas commented on this decision, saying:

At the beginning of year two we realized these kids were aging. We knew what their piece of the puzzle at the very end game of the show would be and we knew we had to grab it and we did.

This may have been a long shot that was taken by the showrunners, as even one link left untethered would’ve brought all of it crashing down. Thankfully, the long-term storytelling paid off for them in the end.

Black Mirror Kickstarter Succeeds in Just 4 Hours. Is This a World Record?
Image
As Black Mirror's new Kickstarter officially launches, the project has been fully funded in just 4 hours. But is this a record for fan support on the site? Announced in June, Black Mirror's new project is a USS Callister adaptation, starting off with a $20,149 goal that was reached in just four hours.

To set a new record for highest funding, Black Mirror will have to top Transformers' jaw-dropping 2025 success.

Coming from writer Neil Gibson and artist Silvano Beltramo, the new comic will adapt season 4, episode 1's USS Callister, starring Jesse Plemons and Cristin Milioti. Running until August 21, the Kickstarter reportedly stands at $38,768, already reaching the first stretch goal of a bonus digital copy for all backers.

The comic will feature cover art from Butcher Billy, colors from Agnese Pozza and lettering Rob Jones. The adaptation promises retro art perfectly suited to the twin realities of the stories, with additional 'loot' including crew badges,...

V/H/S Halloween announced, directors revealed
Image
Peanut butter and jelly. Ice cream on a summer day. Milk and cookies. In the words of country star Luke Combs, some things just go better together, and probably always will. Not every example needs to be food-related, though horror movie fans may disagree after hearing how they'll be feasting this October.

Horror has always paired best with Halloween, and it makes sense. It's the only holiday we have that puts horror front and center, whether it be scary costumes, horrific lawn decorations, or one of the greatest horror movie franchises of all-time, Halloween.

Michael Myers isn't coming to the V/H/S franchise, the long-running horror anthology, but his spirit lingers over the recent announcement that the theme for the eighth installment is, you guessed it, Halloween. The news came out yesterday that V/H/S Halloween would be hitting Shudder on October 3, ending speculation over which direction the franchise would...

Inside Track: Lights up on Phase 2 of Emmy season
Image
Phase In

And just like that, we’re nearly two weeks into Phase 2. After the initial head-swirling buzz of Emmy nominations, the industry has been in that quiet in-between space where studios are working behind-the-scenes to wrangle their stars out of summer vacation plans to get them back on the campaign trail. Expect the plates to start spinning madly again next week with interviews, roundtables and FYC events quickly filling up the calendar.

The TV Academy itself is getting into the Phase 2 FYC space for the first time with the launch of Televerse, a three-day shindig scheduled for Aug. 14-16 and featuring officially sanctioned contender panels. The guidelines detail strict rules for these panels, though, including length of time (a hard out at 60 minutes), number of talent involved (eight plus a moderator), and location. Go anywhere else and you can’t bill yourself as such to Academy members, or invite them directly.

Dcu’s ‘Booster Gold’ TV Show Gets an Important Production Update
Image
HBO Max is finally moving ahead with its Booster Gold series, and they’ve found the person to lead it. David Jenkins, the creator of Our Flag Means Death, has signed on to write the pilot episode. If the show gets picked up, he’s expected to take over as showrunner too.

This news comes not long after a big Emmy nomination day for The Penguin, another DC-related project. That show scored 24 nominations, including ones for Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti.

With that kind of momentum, Booster Gold could be the next big DC TV project for Warner Bros. Discovery.

The character Booster Gold was created by Dan Jurgens. His real name is Michael Jon “Booster” Carter, and he’s from Gotham City. He was a college football star who lost his scholarship after getting caught gambling. Later, he used futuristic technology to become a superhero, though he’s mostly...

Kelly has been behind such viral hits as Too Many Cooks and the Goblin Chedder commercial in the horror flick, Mandy.    The film will be co-produced by BoulderLight Pictures, the banner behind Companion, Friendship and the anticipated, upcoming horror flick, Weapons. Cleveland, Ohio based production company Low Spark Films is also on board as a producer.    Plot details are being kept under wraps but with this star quality...

Buddy: Cristin Milioti stars in horror film from Too Many Cooks director
Cristin Milioti
A couple of months ago, we heard that Cristin Milioti (The Penguin) was in early talks to take a role in the horror film The Backrooms, which is based on a series of viral videos. We were cautioned that Milioti’s involvement with The Backrooms was only 50-50 at that point, so it wasn’t entirely surprising when it came out that Milioti wouldn’t be in that movie after all. Now, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Milioti is currently working on a different horror project, an independent horror thriller titled Buddy, from director Casper Kelly. Kelly was behind another viral sensation, the 11 minute short Too Many Cooks, which blew a lot of minds when it was released in 2014.

J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules of BoulderLight Pictures, the company behind such films as Barbarian, Companion, Friendship, and Weapons, are producing Buddy with Tyler Davidson and Drew Sykes of Low Spark Films,...

Production has begun this week on Buddy, a unique horror movie from Too Many Cooks and Adult Swim Yule Log director Casper Kelly.

Emmy-nominated actor Cristin Milioti (“The Penguin”) is attached to star, THR reports.

In addition to the mind-bending Adult Swim short “Too Many Cooks” and increasingly wild Yule Log and its sequel, Kelly also contributed the unforgettable “Cheddar Goblin” commercial inserted in Panos Cosmatos’ Mandy.

Milioti earned an Emmy nomination for playing Sofia Falcone in the DC series “The Penguin,” has appeared in “Black Mirror,” and is currently in talks to star...

Hot off her Emmy nomination for her work in HBO’s The Penguin, Cristin Milioti is jumping into her next screen project, an independent horror thriller titled Buddy.

Casper Kelly, who co-created Adult Swim shows such as Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell and the horror comedy viral sensation Too Many Cooks, is directing the feature, which began production this week in Ohio.

J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules are producing via their BoulderLight Pictures, the banner that is having a, um, banner year with Companion, Friendship and the upcoming horror movie Weapons on their slate.

Tyler Davidson and Drew Sykes are producing for Low Spark Films, the Cleveland, Ohio, based production company that counts Emily the Criminal and Take Shelter among its credits. The company is co-financing the project.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the project is being described as a “new experience in horror.” Kelly...

20 Successful Hollywood Actors With a Not So Successful Personal Life
Image
You’d think that once someone “makes it” in Hollywood, the hard part is over. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. If anything, for some stars, that’s when things start to unravel. Success doesn’t cancel out addiction, mental health struggles, bad decisions, or toxic relationships. And in a world where everything is watched, posted, and picked apart, falling apart is a lot more public.

This is not about dragging names through the mud or digging up old tabloid drama; it is about showing the other side of fame. Some of the biggest names in film were winning awards and breaking box office records while quietly battling addiction, mental health issues, legal trouble, or the overwhelming weight of fame. It is wild how someone can be the face of a billion-dollar franchise while their personal life is falling apart behind the scenes.

Some of them have turned things around.

The Batman Part II: 5 Potential DC Comics Villains For The Sequel
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

There's been reason to doubt "The Batman Part II" would be going forward in the past few years, but the believers are looking vindicated. Writer-director Matt Reeves and his partner Mattson Tomlin announced they'd completed the sequel's script on June 27, 2025. Warner Bros. has since received the script and is apparently quite happy with it. Hence, it's seeming more and more like "The Batman Part II" will make its 2027 release date.

"The Batman" was a nearly three hour-long epic that saw Batman (Robert Pattinson) meet many of his classic foes. The main villain of the movie was the Riddler (Paul Dano), a serial killer out to expose corruption in Gotham. The root of said corruption was mob boss Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), who' served by gangsters like Oz "The Penguin" Cobb (Colin Farrell). Batman also met Selina Kyle/Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz...

‘How I Met Your Mother’ Creator Used Steven Spielberg’s Million-Dollar ‘Jaws’ Logic for Not Giving Cristin Milioti More Screen Time
Image
The biggest gripe that fans of How I Met Your Mother had with the last season of the show was that they couldn’t witness more of Cristin Milioti’s elusive character. But in an interview with TV Gal, showrunner Craig Thomas revealed that it was by design.

The buildup to her reveal from the start to the end was aimed to feel even grander and meaningful than the previous seasons, which is why they used the tactics that director Steven Spielberg used with Jaws. This means showing just enough to gradually build the intrigue for a huge pay-off at the end. Thomas said in the interview:

We always wanted it to be special for year nine when you saw her. You tune in and you don’t see her in an episode and maybe you were a little disappointed but maybe that’s okay because that makes you want...

Peacock’s most underrated drama is twisty, weird, and so good
Image
‘The Resort’ is the emotional vacation mystery you didn’t know you needed.

Peacock might be the go-to for reality TV junkies — between its “Real Housewives” empire and endless competition series, it’s cornered that market. But when it comes to Peacock originals, there’s one drama I absolutely love that’s been flying way under the radar, and it deserves way more attention. “The Resort” is twisty, weird in all the best ways, and emotionally powerful. It’s part murder mystery, part relationship drama, and part mind-bending sci-fi… something totally different from Peacock’s usual lineup. If you missed it when it dropped, now’s the time to catch up, because for my money, it’s the best under-the-radar drama on the platform.

Not a glitch! Inside the massive ‘Black Mirror’ Emmys comeback
Image
If you correctly predicted that Season 7 of Black Mirror would receive 10 Emmy nominations, you might be living on another planet ... or in a computer simulation ... or maybe both.

Netflix's long-running science-fiction anthology series had fallen into an awards rut, with Season 6 only garnering three noms in 2024, and Season 5 earning just a single bid in 2020. That's a far cry from the halcyon days of 2017-19, when it won eight Emmy Awards. Black Mirror's impressive showing this week can rightly be called an Emmys comeback, considering that 10 nominations is more than any of its prior seasons or stand-alone movies.

Blame the name game

In recent years, it's likely that category confusion led to Television Academy members struggling to properly determine where Black Mirror was eligible, which seemed to change on a season-to-season basis. For the 2025 Emmys and 2024 Emmys, Black Mirror was eligible in Best Limited or Anthology Series, a category...

This ‘Penguin’ Star Wants the Show to Come Back as Much As You Do
Image
When The Penguin, the spin-off series to Matt Reeves's The Batman, was first announced, no one could've quite expected how brilliant it would be. Regarded as one of the best shows of the decade so far, Colin Farrell's performance as the titular Oz Cobb is utterly captivating, although he simply wouldn't have been so great were it not for the supporting cast led with pitch-perfect precision by Cristin Milioti.

So good was the series that it helped HBO and HBO Max set a new personal best in the recent Emmy nominations, accumulating a staggering 142 nods across a plethora of categories. The Penguin earned 24 of these nominations alone, which was the second-highest behind the all-conquering Apple TV+ series Severance, with third place going to both The Studio and The White Lotus with 23 noms each. Among these were nominations for both Farrell and Milioti, as well as nods in several...

'I Did Get Nervous': Colin Farrell Feared The Penguin Was Going To Be Shut Down By The Studio
Image
The Penguinstar Colin Farrell opens up about his early worries that the show would never happen.

Speaking to Variety, Farrell was asked if there was ever a time when he was worried that The Penguin wouldn't actually go through production. "Yeah, a couple, like the during the strike," Farrell replied. "And in a world where they can make a Batgirl film and then just can it. I don't understand it, the debits and credits and ledgers and, fucking, all that stuff, but they can decide that it's economically advantageous to just shelve a $90 million film that people have put so much effort into it. You better believe it."

"When we were in the middle of the strike, I remember saying to my sister, 'I don't know if we're gonna go back to this. I don’t know if we’re gonna finish it.' I did get nervous," Farrell continued.

‘The Penguin’ Emmy Nominee Colin Farrell On Whether He’s Read ‘Batman II’ Yet: “I’m Very Close To It”
Image
Colin Farrell, have you or have you not read Matt Reeves’ new screenplay for The Batman II?

“Not yet,” beamed the actor, who is celebrating his first Emmy nomination for HBO and DC Studios’ Batman spinoff series The Penguin.

“But I’m very close to it. I can’t wait. I’m going to have to block out a few hours when that happens and really put the kettle on and put a nice cup of tea on and pay attention,” said Farrell, who spoke with Deadline from the Santa Monica set of Apple TV+’s Season 2 of Sugar.

“Matt is an extraordinary writer and a highly intelligent artist. I will imagine that the script will be riveting and incredibly deep and he’s taken he’s time with it and that’s because he’s a perfectionist.”

“I’ll be excited to read it and I’m going to read it soon,...

Emmy Noms Breakdown: ‘The Studio’ Claims Frontrunner Status; ‘The Pitt’ and ‘Adolescence’ Gear Up for Drama and Limited Series Showdowns
Image
The excitement of Emmy nomination morning fades quickly for studios and networks, because the more daunting question is always the same: How do we actually win?

It’s tempting to judge frontrunners based on sheer nomination tallies. If we followed that logic, drama series “Severance” with 27 nods, satirical comedy “The Studio” with a record-breaking 23, and the villainous limited series “The Penguin” with 24 would seem like the ones to beat. But this is the Emmys — nothing is ever that simple.

Looking at the drama categories, the race looks to shape up with Apple TV+’s “Severance” versus HBO Max’s critically acclaimed freshman entry “The Pitt,” which earned a solid 13 nominations.

On Emmy night, winning is rarely about just one factor. It’s about crafting the “winning package,” and both “Severance” and “The Pitt” performed exceptionally well with the Television Academy’s four largest branches: Executives, Actors, Writers, and Editors.

Colin Farrell Says There Is No Season 2 of 'The Penguin'
Image
Colin Farrell is already one of the most awarded stars to ever appear in a comic book project, and The Penguin could well continue to increase his trophy cabinet following his nomination for playing Oz Cobb in The Batman spinoff series. But the question that still keeps coming up time and time again is whether there will be another season of The Penguin. Now, the query has been given a definitive answer by the man himself – not for the first time.

Since The Penguin delivered one of 2024’s most praised pieces of television, and arguably the best TV show based on DC Comics characters, everyone has constantly been asking Farrell and others involved in the series if we will be getting a new season following the arrival of The Batman Part II. Despite some rumblings about a new season still being possible, Farrell has categorically said that is not the case.

HBO boss shares optimistic The Penguin season 2 update
Image
On July 15, 2025, Emmy nominations were announced, highlighting the standout shows and performances of the year. HBO and Max led the pack with a record-breaking 142 nominations, including major nods for fan favorites like The Penguin (24 noms), The White Lotus (23 noms) and The Last of Us (16 noms). With those being such popular shows, it's no surprise that HBO/Max dominated the Emmy race.

Following the announcement, Variety got the opportunity to speak with HBO and Max content chief Casey Bloys, who shared his thoughts on the impressive achievement and the futures of some of the network’s most beloved series.

Cristin Milioti in The Penguin season 1 | Macall Polay/HBO

One particular series that he spoke on is The Penguin. When asked about the possibility of a second season, Bloys remained cautiously optimistic, explaining that while no official decision has been made, a new installment could definitely happen.

‘The Penguin’ Emmy Nominee Cristin Milioti Says ‘It’s Thrilling to Seek Revenge & Be Fabulous While Doing It’
Image
Cristin Milioti has graced our TV screens for a while now, but she’s just landed her first-ever Emmy nomination for her performance in The Penguin, HBO‘s hit spinoff of The Batman. Nominated for Best Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series, Milioti is being recognized for her seriously stellar work as Sofia Falcone, who memorably becomes Sofia Gigante, head of the newly-minted Gigante crime family after she murders the majority of her Falcone family members in retaliation for taking the fall as “The Hangman.” After being gaslit and imprisoned in Arkham, Sofia is done with being the fall guy, and she took viewers along for an exciting onscreen journey as she sought her own power in a world dominated by men. The series about The Batman adversary Oz Cobb (Colin Farrell), a.k.a. The Penguin, saw how Sofia and the mobster’s history shifted the criminal dynamics of Gotham City.

Could 'The Penguin' Get a Season 2 Despite Being Nominated as a Limited Series at the Emmys? HBO Max Boss Weighs In
Image
On Tuesday, HBO and HBO Max set a new personal best by scoring a staggering 142 Emmy nominations collectively. Much of that success was powered by The Penguin, the spin-off series to Matt Reeves's The Batman starring Colin Farrell as the titular Oz Cobb, which came away with the second-most nominations of any one show at 24. It's just the latest in a long line of honors for the crime drama after a critically acclaimed season following Oz's strategic maneuvering to take power within Gotham City. The question, since the finale aired back in November, has been whether the series would be back for another round despite its billing as a limited series. On that front, HBO and Max content chairman and CEO Casey Bloys was able to provide an update, though it doesn't sound like Season 2 could be coming anytime soon.
