‘Bunny’ Review: Manic NYC East Village Tenement Comedy Goes Off The Wall In Search Of Laughs And Gets Them – SXSW
Image
One of the unexpected pleasures of this year’s vast SXSW slate of movies is Bunny, a kind of zany comic throwback to extreme indie New York City-centric movies that find a manic energy and rhythm that lets them exist on their own breathless cloud, with a cast of wacky characters moving in and out of frame in action that takes place almost entirely in an East Village tenement, or outside just in front of it.

In some ways Bunny is an oddball cross of Weekend at Bernie’s, Abbott & Costello, Cheech & Chong and a new-age Marx Brothers movie, plus films of the Safdie brothers (particularly Uncut Gems) all the way back to Hal Ashby’s wonderful directorial debut with 1970’s The Landlord, another NYC tenement movie I kept thinking about watching this stew. Throw them all into a blender and you might have something resembling what first-time director...

‘Bunny’ Review: An Off-the-Wall Indie Comedy That Celebrates the Enduring Rowdiness of Downtown Manhattan
Image
Once upon a time, mostly in the 1980s and 90s, the downtown Manhattan indie movie was a thing. Films like Jim Jarmusch’s Permanent Vacation, Edo Bertoglio’s Downtown 81, Larry Clark’s Kids and, later on, early Safdie brothers efforts like The Pleasure of Being Robbed were gritty off-the-cuff street features made on tiny budgets, shouldered by directors looking to capture the weird and wild world below 14th Street.

But living in that part of the city soon became expensive, and more expensive, and even more expensive — to the point that many writers, artists and filmmakers were priced out of their neighborhoods. Shooting in Manhattan also became exorbitantly costly, leaving room for only well-funded TV shows like Law & Order, Billions or Succession. Even the latest NYC-set Safdie joint (directed by Josh Safdie in his first solo effort) is an epic period piece, starring Timothée Chalamet, with a budget estimated between $50-$70 million.

Image
As Sundance Film Festival kicks off, the next major American film festival has unveiled its lineup. SXSW 2025’s slate includes the premieres of the latest films from Michael Bay, Chad Hartigan, Flying Lotus, Mimi Cave, Jay Duplass, Babak Anvari, Rodney Ascher, and more. But first, last year’s SXSW winner of the Grand Jury Award and Audience Award in the Narrative Feature categories, Tracie Laymon’s Bob Trevino Likes It, will arrive on March 21 and Roadside Attractions has unveiled the first trailer.

John Fink said in his review, “A crowd-pleasing film inspired by director Tracie Laymon’s experience talking with a stranger online at a low point in her life, Bob Trevino Likes It is a moving story that proves good people do exist in this world. With two wonderful performances by Barbie Ferreira and John Leguizamo––playing two strangers who share the same last name but are otherwise unrelated...

A Wife Alone Finds Revenge
Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Don't get me wrong... guys can be hellish too, but anyone who has ever had a run-in with a vengeful loony with a vagina can attest to this fact. Case in point: the latest "devilish noir" flick to head our way, A Wife Alone.

The film will be available through major cable/satellite and On Demand enabled platforms across the United States on June 10th.

From the Press Release

A feature film by Justin Reichman, A Wife Alone is a dark psychological thriller about an ill-fated marriage in the suburbs of upstate New York. The plot centers around Jane, an attractive young bride who marries a naive investment banker named Park, desperate to marry before his 30th birthday.

The young, ostensibly happy couple buys a quaint house in a nice neighborhood and settles into the suburban dream before a visit to Park's godparents,...

Hannah Has a Ho-Phase Manages Boring and Offensive at the Same Time
Meredith Forlenza
It ought to be harder to be so simultaneously boring and offensive, but somehow the new sex comedy Hannah Has a Ho-Phase manages both. This is not the movie's only groundbreaking aspect; it is also the first feature-length film made in the U.S. with an entirely female crew—which only proves how many women also seem to be misogynists. The premise is tight in the way of romantic comedies: Mismatched female best friends share an apartment and many glasses of wine and late-night confessions, but their sexual ethics are way out of whack. Hannah (Meredith Forlenza) hasn't had sex in months because she's taking things slow with a new guy, while her roommate, Leslie (Genevieve Hudson-Price), a former ballerina who runs a pole-dance fitness studio, takes home someone new almost eve...

Loveless (2011)
"Loveless," Reviewed
Loveless (2011)
Whereas most men would refrain from approaching a woman he just saw pulling the hair of another in a bar, Andrew (Andrew von Urtz) walks towards her. It isn't the first clue in Ramin Serry's comedy "Loveless" that something is amiss about Andrew, though it is the clearest indication of what's kept him without obligations of any kind other than a desk job he hates as he nears middle age. He's also an aspiring filmmaker who uses the promise of his script to bait women into putting up with his advances and projects a certain urbaneness even if he's utterly unhip.

Like the two women who do find themselves attracted to Andrew during the course of "Loveless," one's appreciation of the film may hinge on your tolerance of its central character's dry wit and lack of ambition, not only since you're spending 96 minutes in his company, but from storytelling perspective,...
