NBA Playoffs Kick Off to Ratings Growth Amid a Changing of the Guard
Image
The 2025 NBA playoffs kicked off to double-digit viewership growth amid a changing of the guard — both as younger stars have stepped forward and as the league heads into a lucrative TV rights deal, including a new home on NBC.

Through the conference semifinals, which included 22 games, the NBA playoffs’ audience is running 12% ahead of last year on ESPN platforms (including ESPN and ABC), according to Nielsen. ESPN is averaging 4.88 million viewers, ranking as the No. 2 most-watched NBA playoffs since 2011.

Sunday’s Game 7 matchup in which the Oklahoma City Thunder defeated the Denver Nuggets scored 6.34 million viewers, becoming the day’s most-watched TV program, and peaked with 7.63 million viewers.

Likewise, Friday’s Game 6 between the Boston Celtics and New York Knicks, which saw the Knicks upset the Celtics with a 119-81 win, brought in an average viewership of 5.73 million, and peaked with 6.6 million viewers. Viewership for the game was up 14% from...

Controversial New ‘Adolescence’ Dupe From ‘Euphoria’ Creator Is a Streaming Success Story
Image
It's probably no coincidence that Netflix chose to release the Israeli coming-of-age series Bad Boy at this stage. Not too long ago, the streamer witnessed the massive success of the British series Adolescence, which revolved around the murder of a teenage girl and the young boy accused of having committed the crime. Adolescence became a runaway hit, drawing some of the biggest viewership figures in Netflix's history. Coincidentally, Bad Boy tackles many of the same themes as that show, and has the potential to become the streamer's next big international hit, at least if its early viewership is any indication.

The eight-episode drama hails from Ron Leshem — who remains best known for having created the original Israeli Euphoria, which inspired Sam Levinson's HBO remake — and Hagar Ben-Asher (Dead Women Walking). Leshem himself describedBad Boy as "the next Euphoria" in the past. The show debuted this past week to positive reviews and encouraging audience buzz.

The series tells the story of Dean Scheinman (Guy Manster), a teenager imprisoned in a juvenile detention facility for most of his teen years. Scheinman is eventually able...

‘Long Bright River’ Review: Amanda Seyfried Stars in a Philly-Set Peacock Mystery That Treads Water for Too Long
Image
Everything is not sunny in Philadelphia on the small screen this week.

Both Apple TV+’s Dope Thief — review coming Thursday — and Peacock’s Long Bright River set stories of blue-collar murder and misery against the relative hopefulness of the complicated relationships between their two main characters.

One of the shows starts extremely well, with its focus on that central relationship, but struggles in its second half. The other struggles through its first half, but resolves reasonably well once it makes its way to what was always supposed to be the heart of the story.

The second series is Long Bright River, which closes with two emotionally effective episodes that mostly hit their target, despite some over-obvious plot twists; a climax that’s a lesser version of the ending of a better prestige drama from last year; and a laughable moment in which somebody finally gets around to saying the series’ title.

The MIPCOM Hot List: Buyers Brace for “Fewer, Better, Bigger Shows”
Image
Bye-bye, Peak TV. After more than a decade of unprecedented production growth, the international television industry is bracing for an era of tighter budgets and more bean counting.

“Instead of subscriber growth at all costs, now the focus is on production and investment and getting the balance sheet right,” says Cathy Payne, CEO of Banijay Rights, the sales arm of the production giant behind reality TV hits Big Brother and high-end dramas Peaky Blinders and Black Mirror. “I hate using the phrase because everyone says it, but the focus now is on ‘fewer, better, bigger shows.’ ”

The variety of shows on offer at this year’s global TV market in Cannes, MIPCOM, suggests every buyer, at every budget, should find something to fill their slots. And while THR’s annual hot list of the market’s best new drama series ranges from a by-the-book NBC procedural to an erotic comedy...

'Bad Boy' Review - Pain & Poetry in Prison
Image
There must be something established right out of the gate about the drama series Bad Boy. It hails from the creator of Euphoria Ron Lesham, but it's important to specify that this is referring to the original series. In other words, don’t hold all the disastrous places where Sam Levinson’s remake ended up against this new story from him and his co-writer/creator Hagar Ben-Asher. This is even more important, considering that Bad Boy is quite good. Though there is still much more to experience, as only the first two episodes of the eight-episode series were shared for review, it already brings a refreshing degree of nuance to its story of a young kid who is sent to a juvenile detention facility. At its core, Bad Boy is a story about the stories we tell ourselves about our systems of “justice” and the ones those caught up in...

‘Euphoria’ Creator Ron Leshem Details Intriguing Story Behind North Road/Sipur-Backed Juvenile Prison Series ‘Bad Boy’
Image
Exclusive: Euphoria creator Ron Leshem has shared the intriguing story behind buzzy Israeli drama Bad Boy, the first international co-production backed by Peter Chernin’s North Road.

Unveiled in March for Israeli network Hot, at which point it was described by Leshem as “the next Euphoria,” Bad Boy follows Dean, who is imprisoned in a cruel juvenile detention facility and bonds with Zoro, a grim and mysterious teenage prisoner serving time for murder. Dean learns to harness his unique intelligence and, 20 years later, these traits define him as a star comedian, while his time in jail is a secret threatening to resurface and tear his life apart.

Only six months passed between the show’s announcement and today’s TIFF premiere but Leshem said Bad Boy has been two decades in the making, harking back to his time as an investigative journalist when he was assigned to a story in a juvenile prison.
