5 of Music History’s Weirdest Supergroups
Image
The best and brightest in a field always gravitate toward each other, whether that’s to smush genitals together or combine their powers to become something even greater. They also tend to be weird as hell, though, so sometimes, their collaborations only become something seriously strange.

5 SuperHeavy

Eurythmics keyboardist Dave Stewart got the idea for SuperHeavy “when he was in his house in the hills of Jamaica, above Saint Ann Parish, listening to three or four sound systems blasting at the same time, the music wafting into the air and blending together.” Not realizing this was unhinged behavior, he recruited Mick Jagger, R&b singer Joss Stone, reggae producer Damian Marley and Bollywood composer A.R. Rahman, and to his credit, the result does sound like someone is playing a bunch of different songs at once. Marley didn’t even seem to know how he got there, having been “pulled into...

Imogen Heap Launches AI Music Tools With AI Platform Jen
Image
Grammy-winning artist and producer Imogen Heap has officially released a set of AI song generation tools through the AI music platform Jen, Heap and the company announced on Thursday, months after originally announcing their partnership late last year.

Heap dropped five different “stylefilters” on Jen on Thursday, taking her songs “Headlock,” “Goodnight and Go,” “Just For Now,” Last Night of an Empire” and “What Have You Done to Me,” and making them available for users to serve as the basis for new AI song generations.

The stylefilters work by taking text-based prompts users feed into Jen’s system, describing the type of song they want to create. Jen then takes that description and fuses it with whichever Heap song the user picked, creating a new track with the vibe of the selected stylefilter song. Each of Heap’s stylefilters are available for purchase for $4.99 ($7.99 for a higher strength version), allowing...

Imogen Heap Just Went Viral With ‘Headlock’ — Now She’s Letting You Borrow Its Vibe Via AI
Image
Imogen Heap, whose 2005 track “Headlock” just became her biggest hit ever after a belated viral surge on TikTok, is now letting fans legally borrow its vibe for their own songs via generative AI. Heap is the first artist to sign on for a new feature from AI-music platform Jen that lets users “infuse the vibe, feel, rhythmic style, instrument textures” of licensed songs into new creations, according to co-founder and CEO Shara Senderoff. Heap also licensed four other tracks for use as what the company calls StyleFilters: “Goodnight and Go,...

New Harry Potter Trailer Highlights The Franchise’s Most Controversial Story
Image
Seven years after it first lit up the stage, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is celebrating its Broadway anniversary with a brand-new trailer — and it’s diving headfirst into the franchise’s boldest, most debated chapter. The video shows off what the producers call the “most astonishing theatrical magic ever seen on stage.” But more than just a showcase of live spectacle — and believe us, there is a lot of spectacle to this show, it's mindblowing — it puts a spotlight on The Cursed Child’s central story: a time-traveling, father-son drama that has divided the Potter fandom since day one. The official synopsis can be found below:

It’s time to believe in magic again. When Harry Potter’s head-strong son Albus befriends the son of his fiercest rival, Draco Malfoy, it sparks an unbelievable new journey for them all—with the power to change the past and future forever.

'Garden State' Stars Zach Braff & Natalie Portman Reunite at 20th Anniversary Concert, Where Soundtrack Artists United for an Incredible Show
Image
Nearly 6,000 people were treated to a once-in-a-lifetime experience this past weekend at the Garden State 20th Anniversary Concert, marking the first time that nearly all of the artists from the iconic soundtrack have united to perform the music together.

Zach Braff, who wrote, directed, and starred in the movie, hosted the concert on Saturday night (March 29) at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles.

Zach opened the show by pulling a tarp off a motorcycle and sidecar, just like the one featured in the film. He then brought out co-star Natalie Portman, who flew in from Paris to be at the one-night-only benefit concert. The event supported The Midnight Mission’s efforts to combat homelessness.

Damon Albarn, Annie Lennox, Kate Bush Release Silent Album to Protest Proposed U.K. AI Law
Image
Kate Bush, Damon Albarn, Annie Lennox, Cat Stevens, The Clash and Hans Zimmer are among 1,000 artists featured on a new collaborative album surprise released on Tuesday, but you won’t hear any of their music.

Instead, their new record is merely 47 minutes and 17 seconds of relative silence and white noise, a melancholy display of the sound of music if there’s no artists to actually create it. The album, called Is This What We Want?, is a protest record aimed at the UK government, which is considering changes to the...

Lady Gaga Joins Andy Samberg For ‘D— In A Box’ Duet During ‘SNL50’ Concert’s Lonely Island Mashup
Image
Years later, Lady Gaga is poking fun at those pesky rumors with an era-appropriate pop culture banger.

The 14-time Grammy winner joined Andy Samberg onstage Friday at Radio City Music Hall for SNL50: The Homecoming Concert, where they began performing her A Star Is Born track “Shallow” before deciding to do a selection more in Samberg’s “vocal range.”

“There is one song, but Justin [Timberlake’s] not here to do his parts,” he said, to which Gaga replied, “Andy, don’t be a b*tch. I’ll do it with you.”

The pair then launched into a performance of The Lonely Island’s “Dick in a Box” from the 2006 SNL Christmas episode.

Ariana Grande Open to Performing at the Oscars With Cynthia Erivo: “Say the Word and We’ll Be There”
Image
Ariana Grande’s awards season journey has begun, first with a Golden Globes nomination and now with eyes set on the Oscars.

Grande received her first-ever Globes nom (as best supporting actress) for her performance in Wicked, and is also a frontrunner for the category at the Academy Awards in March. And though Wicked‘s iconic numbers are not eligible for best original song — where all five nominees are generally performed during the Oscars telecast — would Grande and co-star Cynthia Erivo want to perform at the awards show, as leads of one of the biggest movies (and biggest-ever Broadway musical adaptation) of the year?

“Of course, we love singing with each other,” Grande told The Hollywood Reporter at the Golden Globes First-Time Nominee Celebration on Tuesday. “I’ll sing together absolutely anywhere anytime, especially in celebration of Wicked, and I love her, that’s my sister. Say the word and we’ll be there.

A New, Even Shorter Version of ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ Is Headed to Broadway
Image
A revised, shortened version of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will come to Broadway in November.

The new version of the play clocks in at under three hours, including intermission, compared to the current running time of three-and-a-half hours. The new version will premiere on Broadway when new cast members take over and begin performances at Lyric Theatre on Nov. 12, 2024.

This marks the second time the play has been shortened while on Broadway. The original production, which opened on Broadway in April 2018, was shown in two parts which ran five hours and 15 minutes in total.

When the play returned to Broadway, following the shutdown of all theaters due to the pandemic, it returned as a one-part play running at three-and-a-half hours. At the time, producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender cited the difficulty of bringing back such a large-scale show, as well as the commercial challenges and reduced tourism...

Rachel Chinouriri, Cat Burns Call Out Harmful Double Standards on New Song ‘Even’
Image
The double standards that Black women often face in the music industry receive a double examination on Rachel Chinouriri and Cat Burns’ new collaboration “Even.” The record calls into question the additional obstacles both artists have encountered while navigating their careers as indie and pop singer-songwriters coming out of the U.K. — and how those same barriers remain in place for non-white people across every industry.

“‘Even’ is about the injustice Black and Poc people feel with identity in a world that can treat them foreign. Sometimes it feels like...

Victoria Monét Reflects on Historic Win as First Black Woman to Earn Best Engineered Album Grammy
Image
While much of the focus of Victoria Monét’s triple-Grammy haul was on her best new artist win, another trophy represents a historic victory that could help break down more barriers for all women in the music industry — her win for best engineered album.

The white-hot singer-songwriter is the first Black woman to win the award in the show’s 66-year history, since she co-engineered her major-label debut album, Jaguar II.

She is the fourth woman to take home the coveted Grammy, following previous wins by Imogen Heap, Trina Shoemaker and Emily Lazar. When Monét — who writes and produces her music and has crafted hits for Ariana Grande, Blackpink, Chloe x Halle and Chris Brown — speaks to THR a few weeks after that magical night to reflect on the groundbreaking milestone, she says, “It’s a beautiful thing.”

But she also adds that “it says a lot” about the industry.

Jason Derulo Is an Audacious, Occasionally Ridiculous Pop-r&b Smoothie on ‘Nu King’
Image
You’d be forgiven for being surprised that Jason Derulo hadn’t released an album since 2015’s Everything Is 4. In the nine years since that full-length’s release, Derulo has kept himself in the public eye, whether through his Tiktoks or his steady stream of singles; his fizzy collaboration with the New Zealand producer Jawsh 685 “Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat” even reached No. 1 on the Hot 100 in 2020, thanks in part to a clutch assist from BTS.

That gap helps explain in part the length of Nu King, Derulo’s fifth album.

How ‘The O.C.’ (Almost) Saved Rock
Image
“We didn’t know what we were doing,” says Josh Schwartz, creator of The O.C. For the show’s first few episodes, the music choices were simply plucked from his own iPod. But once the now-legendary music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas came aboard, the show turned into a weekly showcase for some of the best music of the ’00s — and a key force behind the mainstream rise of a certain brand of indie-leaning rock in that decade, from Death Cab for Cutie to the Killers. It didn’t hurt that...

‘The O.C.’ at 20: The Chaotic Making of a Teen TV Classic
Image
“Welcome to The O.C., bitch!”

With those five immortal words, a cultural phenomenon was born.

The brainchild of a then-25-year-old Josh Schwartz, and guided by the steady hand of his producing partner Stephanie Savage, The O.C. ran for four chaotic seasons on Fox before sailing off into the sunset (or, in the case of poor Marissa Cooper, crashing in a fiery wreck).

A fish-out-of-water tale about Ryan Atwood (Benjamin McKenzie), a troubled kid from Chino who’s adopted by Sandy (Peter Gallagher), Kirsten (Kelly Rowan), and Seth Cohen (Adam Brody...

Swift announced 1989 (TV) in August during the last stop of her Los Angeles Eras Tour shows. The new version features five previously unreleased vault tracks, which includes one co-penned by Diane Warren. She worked on the other four with Jack Antonoff.

Caroline Polachek Debuts New Song “Dang” in Ted Talk-Style Colbert Performance: Watch
Image
Caroline Polachek was the musical guest on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Tuesday night (October 17th), and she took the opportunity to debut a brand-new single called “Dang.”

“Dang” feels a bit like if Imogen Heap ever had the opportunity to hop in the studio with the late Sophie. Produced by Polachek along with Cecile Believe and Danny L Harle, it sees the artist lean more into her hyper-pop side, juxtaposing her definitively natural vocals against a whimsical, industrial beat that almost sounds like it could’ve been made with household objects.

As for her Colbert performance, Polachek suited up in a modern shirtdress, necktie, and glasses, emulating the college professor you might’ve had a weird crush on but also terrified you a bit. In between hip swings and dramatic arm gestures, she presented a slideshow filled with infographics that seem to argue the trials and conundrums of being famous for your art.

The Most Shocking Teen TV Shows
Image
High school is always complicated, but the lives of high schoolers on TV are anything but dull. When it comes to teen shows, drama and shocking twists are to be expected. Many teen shows from the last 20 years managed to run for at least four seasons, but this meant they had to do what it took to keep their audiences invested and surprised.

Teen shows always delivered shocking twists and turns, whether it was break-ups, secret siblings, or reveals of mysterious killers. From Pretty Little Liars' big reveals to Riverdale's magic system, teen TV was always full of shocking events that kept audiences coming back for more. These shows never fail to deliver unexpected jaw-dropping moments, often to mixed reactions.

10 Harsh Realities Of Rewatching The O.C. 20 Years Later
Image
The O.C.'s self-awareness and meta-humor added to its appeal, but some harsh realities become apparent re-watching the show 20 years later. Marissa's death actually improved the show, as Ryan's relationship with Taylor felt more genuine and the comedy returned in season 4. The O.C.'s first season had a weak plot with the Oliver Trask storyline, and Seth and Summer's love story started off poorly.

While The O.C. might be a classic teen dramedy, re-watching the series twenty years later exposes a lot of hitherto-unseen cracks in its sunny veneer. The O.C. debuted in 2003. The teen soap soon won over viewers with the story of Ben McKenzie’s Ryan Atwood, a kid from the wrong side of the tracks who was adopted by the well-meaning, affluent Cohen family. Ryan gradually bonded with the family’s nerdy son Seth as the pair pursued relationships with the troubled girl-next-door Marissa Cooper and spoiled rich kid Summer.

10 Infamous "Jump The Shark" Moments That Ruined TV Shows
Image
"Jump the shark" refers to the moment when a show departs from its original premise and loses its appeal, even if the moment makes sense in-universe. Examples of shows jumping the shark include Fonzie's shark-jumping moment in Happy Days and Michael Scott leaving Dunder Mifflin in The Office. Shows like The O.C., Riverdale, and Prison Break also jumped the shark through outrageous or poorly-executed storylines, leading to a decline in quality.

While the term “jump the shark” has been overused in recent years, some shows truly earned the phrase in their worst moments. There are a lot of terms used by fandoms that can sometimes seem confusing or contradictory to casual viewers. For example, the term “Bottle episode” traditionally referred to cheaply produced outings that used a minimal number of cast members and pre-built sets to save on budgetary costs.

Just like TV’s many infamous bottle episodes, moments...

What a Needle Drop Means in Movies
Image
It's strange to think about now, but when the film industry started, movies did not have any sound. Filmmakers had to make do with live musical accompaniment and placards popping up on the screen at regular intervals to let the audience know about crucial plot points. Then came the "talkies" with music and dialogs included in the film, and suddenly moviemakers had a brand-new and highly effective means of telling their stories.

There are many audio elements to modern movies. There is the film score that plays over most of the movie, usually performed by an orchestra. Various dialogue and sound effects to give the visual storytelling a three-dimensional feel. And sometimes, a practice known as the Needle Drop, which we will be exploring in this article.

What Is a Needle Drop?

Say you're watching a movie, and it's chugging along at a steady pace. Suddenly the mood of the...

The Horne Section TV Show review: Alex Horne’s magpie-ish meta comedy delight
Image
One of Taskmaster’s most recurring jokes is that Alex Horne is the show’s lackey. The affable, awkward assistant is described as “little Alex Horne” by host Greg Davies, even though the hit comedy series was actually his idea. But now he’s breaking out. Horne has his own comedy series called The Horne Section TV Show (Channel 4), about his fictional quest to create his own comedy series called “The Horne Section TV Show”, with his real-life band, who are called… The Horne Section. Still with me? Buckle up; we’re getting meta.

And meta it is: the show opens during a recording of Taskmaster, with Davies – clearly hamming up his tyrannical on-screen persona – berating his co-host to the audience while Alex (Horne playing himself with extra humility) fidgets in the wings. Alex is a man with great ideas, worn down by years of TV bureaucracy and living in Davies’ shadow.

Much Ado Review
Image
Hilary and Anna Shakespeare’s first film, coming of age comedy Soundtrack to Sixteen, struck a chord with me. Of course it did; it was set right around the time I was a teenager, with characters who felt very much like myself and my friends at the time. Unfortunately, the cinema release coincided with the start of the first Covid lockdowns, and it still hasn’t been as widely seen as it should be. Two years later, the Shakespeare Sisters have returned to coming of age rom-com, this time with a modern set adaptation of a play by an illustrious namesake.

The story of Much Ado About Nothing usually sees soldiers returning from war. Here we have a group of Uni lads coming back from their rugby tour, staying at the country house of Leonato (Peter Saracen) when their bus breaks down. From there it’s the old tale of romantic rivalries,...

It comes after Blanchett, a long time environmentalist who launched the Who On Earth Cares campaign with the Australian Conservation Foundation in 2007, starred in Netflix climate change comedy Don’t Look Up.

She has created and co-hosts the show with Kennedy, who is CEO of New Energy Nexus and Managing Director of the California Clean Energy Fund.

The series is produced with her Dirty Films banner in association with StoryHunter.

It will see the two long-term friends explore despair, optimism and hope in the face of environmental change and will feature an exclusive soundtrack by Imogen Heap.

From women-led energy solutions in Uganda, to a Navajo solar farm in the Arizona desert,...

Orla Gartland Discusses Writing an Album About the "Unglamorous" Chaos of Her 20s
Image

At the age of 14, Orla Gartland could be found in her bedroom strumming away on her acoustic guitar daydreaming of crowds to serenade with her favorite songs. Now at 26, the London-based Irish singer-songwriter - who's been compared to St. Vincent, Stevie Nicks, and Haim - has just released her Woman on the Internet debut album in which she explores the ups, downs, and "unglamorous" chaos of her 20s.

Born and raised in Dublin, Gartland kickstarted her music career as a YouTuber in 2009 when she posted a cover of "Broken Strings" by Nelly Furtado and James Morrison under the name MusicMaaad. "I was obsessed with the song when I was learning to play guitar," she told Popsugar. "So I, very early on, made my guitar teacher teach it to me. That was my first YouTube video. That's how f*cking cocky I was."

"I was obsessed with...

‘Central Park’ Songwriters Talk Crafting Broadway-Style Showstoppers Via Zoom for Animated Hit Series
Image
“Central Park” creator Josh Gad actually called the election results early during a Zoom call with the show’s composers Kate Anderson and Elyssa Samsel. “I’ll never forget that because we all just cried, and then he was like, ‘No wait, never mind that was a fake news article,’” Samsel says. Gad, who also stars in the series as a busker named Birdie, turned out to be right.

Now in its second season, the Apple TV Plus show follows the Tillerman family as they continue to navigate living in and caring for the world’s most famous park. Molly (Emmy Raver-Lampman replaces Kristen Bell) experiences the trials and tribulations of adolescence, Cole (Tituss Burgess) is challenged by a truly embarrassing moment at school, Paige (Kathryn Hahn) continues to chase down the mayor’s corruption story, and Owen (Leslie Odom Jr.) juggles managing the park, his staff, and his family...

This Week In Music: Kings Of Leon Offer Album On Nft – But Past Formats Have Left Listeners Sol
Image
The band Kings of Leon were the big buzz in this week’s music business news, announcing that they would offer their latest album, When You See Yourself, on non-fungible tokens, widely known as NFTs.

The Nft is being offered starting yesterday in a package that will give you a vinyl and digital download for $50. It was released Friday on YellowHeart, an Nft platform. The collectible catch: after two weeks the deal is not available, and no more will be made.

Crypto collectibles are the rage of the moment, with NFTs offered in ownership on a blockchain, a digital ledger that is used to create cryptocurrencies and is immutable. Each Nft is unique and becomes a collector’s item that can’t be duplicated. Companies are springing up to take advantage, with Deadline recently profiling the television show American Gods trying the same approach.

The Nft plan is new, but...

The Cosmic Journey of Kacey Musgraves
Image
It’s exactly one week after the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, and her nerves having been frayed like a rodeo rope, Kacey Musgraves is today opting for some self-care. This is how she finds herself, raven tendrils piled carelessly atop her head, pale cheeks slightly flushed, in a floral and fetching Dolce & Gabbana swimsuit and up to her armpits in steaming hot water in a private session at Nashville’s Holiday Salon & Bathhouse (“Sweat Out Your Sins,” its bumper sticker beckons, with a cheekiness that could easily...

Normal People's Paul Mescal Deserves That Emmy, and I'll Fight Anyone Who Says Otherwise
Image
Oh, happy day! The 2020 Emmy nominations are out, and Normal People's breakout star Paul Mescal earned a nomination for best actor in a limited series or a television movie category. In my opinion, the 24-year-old Irish actor is totally deserving of the recognition, and no, it's not just because I keep dreaming about Connell Waldron's silver chain and still cry when I listen to Imogen Heap's "Hide and Seek." The BBC and Hulu adaptation of Sally Rooney's bestselling novel gave Mescal his first-ever onscreen role, but the actor performed so well that you would never know it. That's called star power, y'all.

Don't get me wrong - Mescal's fellow nominees also gave unforgettable performances. In I Know This Much Is True, Mark Ruffalo played not just one character, but two. In Hollywood, Jeremy Pope stole the show with his adorable smile and fiery chemistry with Jake Picking. But Jeremy Irons,...

Image
Ariana Grande made a surprise appearance during her brother Frankie Grande’s virtual fundraiser for the Los Angeles Lgbt Center on Thursday night.

“I want to send a hug and so much love to anybody who needs it and feels extra isolated,” the singer said during the two-hour Rainbowthon event.

The benefit also included appearances and performances by Kristin Chenoweth, Jewel, Deborah Cox, Shangela, Imogen Heap, “RuPaul’s Drag Race” judges Michelle Visage, Ross Mathews and Carson Kressley, Margaret Cho, Charles Jones, Alexandra Grey, Shoshana Bean and “Making the Cut” winner Jonny Cota.

“It was important to us from the very beginning that we kept our doors open for the clients who need to see us, people who really needed to know that we would be here for them,” the Lgbt Center’s chief of staff Darrel Cummings said.

Cummings said that the center has been able to maintain the...

Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal in Normal People (2020)
Sexual Hearing: How Hulu’s ‘Normal People’ Sound-Designed Intimacy
Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal in Normal People (2020)
“Normal People,” Hulu’s 12-part adaptation of Sally Rooney’s 2018 bestselling novel about two teenagers navigating complicated relationships in modern-day Ireland, isn’t covered in wall-to-wall music and there’s a reason for that. Director Lenny Abrahamson (of “Room” fame) “is much more interested in score working as a reaction to what just happened rather than score telling you what you need to know,” says Steve Fanagan, sound designer and supervising sound editor. With this in mind, when something audible does come into the picture — be it song, score or sound design — it’s not a crutch to rely on for emoting, but rather a part of the storytelling.

“Normal People,” which premieres tonight, was adapted for the small screen by Rooney with the help of Alice Birch and Mark O’Rowe. A classic love story told from the formative high school to college years, the plot is simple — the series...
