TV Directors roundtable: ‘Adolescence,’ ‘Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,’ ‘The Pitt,’ ‘Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story’
Image
What’s the greatest joy in directing an Emmy-nominated project? How do directors get the best out of actors? And what’s similar between making a documentary, drama series, and late night variety show? These were some of the topics discussed by four top television directors when they recently joined Gold Derby’s special “Meet the Experts” roundtable. Our guests are Philip Barantini (Adolescence), Paul Pennolino (Last Week Tonight with John Oliver), Amanda Marsalis (The Pitt), and Ian Bonhôte (Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story).

Watch our full group panel above. Click on each name above to view that person's individual interview.

Bonhôte says that the most important thing when directing is that “the story needs to be extremely emotional. We need to have a narrative and emotional arc as strong as possible. That's the base of everything.” Pennolino agrees and says, “You've gotta be able to tap into something inside...

‘Last Week Tonight with John Oliver’ director Paul Pennolino has to ‘land the plane on the Hudson’ each week
Image
“I've been making my bones in late night comedy for a long, long time now,” reflects Last Week Tonight with John Oliver director Paul Pennolino, who started out as a page working for David Letterman. He adds, “That was before the internet and cell phones and cable news channels. We’re now in the squabble culture.” Watch our full interview above with Pennolino joining our Gold Derby "Meet the Experts" directors panel.

Pennolino has worked on the HBO variety series since 2016. In what seems like a precarious time for late night franchises, the director explains, “My job is to execute content and not opine on stuff like that. Although I will say, I think this broadcast is unlike any other. It is really smart and has evolved into a space where we can spend 40 minutes talking about an issue. I think it has a heck of a role. You know,...

‘SNL’s Liz Patrick Wins First Emmy For Directing
Image
Liz Patrick, who took over directing Saturday Night Live two years ago, won her first primetime Emmy on Sunday.

She won a Creative Arts Emmy for the episode co-hosted by Steve Martin and Martin Short. She beat Last Week Tonight’s Paul Pennolino, Jimmy Kimmel Live!’s Andy Fisher, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s Jim Hoskinson and The Problem with Jon Stewart’s Andre Allen.

Patrick was nominated last year for the Billie Eilish-hosted episode but lost out to A Black Lady Sketch Show’s Bridget Stokes.

She has also previously won a number of daytime Emmys for her work on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Patrick took over from Don Roy King in January 2022. King, who is thought to have directed more hours of live U.S. network television than anyone else, had been the director of the long-running NBC series since 2006 and won 11 Emmys with 16 nominations.

‘Last Week Tonight With John Oliver’ Renewed For 3 Seasons At HBO, Deal Runs Through 2026
Image
Exclusive: Fresh from helping the pūteketeke become the Bird of the Century, John Oliver has another reason to celebrate.

HBO has renewed Last Week Tonight for a further three seasons, taking the weekly show through 2026.

The new deal, which runs through Season 13, comes as the tenth season of the late-night show is coming to a close later this month. The show had a truncated season as a result of the writers strike – airing just over two-thirds of its normal episode count as a result of the labor action – but Oliver still managed to explore timeshares, psychedelic therapy, homeowner associations, abortion rights, the Israel-Hamas war, dollar stores and the Tennessee Adult Entertainment Act as well as most recently organ donation.

His crowning achievement this season, however, was his campaign for the pūteketeke. The New Zealand contest had to be delayed for a couple of weeks due to the overwhelming number of...

2023 Emmy Predictions: Best Variety Series Directing
Image
Following its surprise 2022 Emmy win for Best Variety Series Directing, “A Black Lady Sketch Show” is out of the running for the same prize this year, leaving an opportunity for “Saturday Night Live” to bounce back and achieve its 12th victory in the category. It does, however, face several formidable challengers, including “The Problem with Jon Stewart,” the host of which once starred on “The Daily Show,” which notably halted a “Saturday Night Live” success streak in 2015.

“Saturday Night Live” is the only former winner in this directing lineup, while “The Problem with Jon Stewart” stands as the only new nominee. The three other returning contenders are “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” and “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” which have now amassed a collective total of 18 mentions in this category.

In order to determine how reasonably “Saturday Night Live” can be expected to kick off a new winning streak,...

Giant Cabbage and Raining Raisins: Behind the Scenes at ‘Last Week Tonight With John Oliver’
Image
A version of this story about “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy/Variety/Reality/Nonfiction issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.

When the Television Academy shuffled the variety categories this year, it moved “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” from the variety talk category, where it had won seven years in a row, to the new scripted variety category where it would be facing off against another juggernaut in “Saturday Night Live,” the most nominated and winningest show in Emmy history.

But for “Last Week Tonight” director Paul Pennolino, the move was nothing new: In the Outstanding Directing for a Variety Series, he’d been going up against (and losing to) “SNL” director Don Roy King, an idol of his, for years.

“I knew I was racing against Usain Bolt,” he said with a laugh. “There was no way I was going to win,...

2023 DGA Awards: The Daniels Win The Top Prize For Everything Everywhere All At Once (Full List Of Winners)
Image
The Daniels (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) were the big winners at last night's Directors Guild of America's DGA Awards. The filmmaking duo took home the top prize, Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film, for "Everything Everywhere All At Once" — beating out directing legend Steven Spielberg ("The Fabelmans"), as well as Joseph Kosinski's massive aerial action film "Maverick," Todd Field's critical darling "Tár," and Martin McDonagh's black comedy "The Banshees of Inisherin."

These days, the Daniels seem to embody their hit film, being everything, everywhere, all at once. The Michelle Yeoh-led maximalist action-comedy has something for everyone, and is deeply, satisfyingly, weird. It topped many best-of lists (it was my #1 pick for Best Films of 2022) and is a favorite to take home the Academy Award for Best Picture. Now with a DGA Award under their belts, the odds of that happening are better than ever.

Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert Win Top Prize at DGA Awards (Complete Winners List)
Image
With less than a month to go before the Oscars, every award show counts. The next few weeks will see all of the major Hollywood guilds give out their annual awards, ensuring that each department gets its moment in the spotlight. Tonight, directors took center stage as Hollywood convened at the Beverly Hilton Hotel for the Directors Guild of America Awards.

The ceremony honored outstanding achievement in both film and television directing, and the former category is often seen as predicting the Best Director winner at the Academy Awards. Four of the five Best Director nominees competed in the Feature Film category tonight: Steven Spielberg (“The Fabelmans”), Martin McDonagh (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), Todd Field (“TÁR”), and Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”). “Triangle of Sadness” director Ruben Östlund is not nominated, with “Top Gun: Maverick” helmer Joseph Kosinski taking his place.

Judd Apatow Returns to Host the 2023 DGA Awards
Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd in This Is 40 (2012)
In his fourth time at the podium in the last six years, “This is 40” and “Knocked Up” director Judd Apatow will preside over the 75th Annual DGA Awards, often seen as the belwether for deciding who is favored to win the best director Oscar. The awards, which will take place on February 18, 2023, at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, will honor the best in film, TV, commercials and documentaries, however, there has already been some blowback about the lack of women represented among this year’s titles.

In a statement, DGA Chair Beth McCarthy-Miller said she’s “thrilled that we landed Judd for this special anniversary DGA Awards show 75 years in the making. Never underestimate the power of a Chipotle gift card,” said McCarthy-Miller. “Judd’s a comedy genius that can be counted upon to keep things moving -and as host, he doesn’t have to worry about getting played off the stage.

The Directors Guild of America announced the nominees for television, commercials and documentary for its 75th annual DGA Awards today, a list headed by previous winners Ben Stiller and Vince Gilligan, three-time nominee Jason Bateman and Tim Burton, who shockingly hadn’t previously been nominated by the DGA.

The Bear, Wednesday, Better Call Saul & More Land Directors Guild Of America Awards Nominations For TV
Image
2022, we aren't quite done with you yet. Award season has officially rolled into town, meaning it's time to reflect on the highest highs of last year as the industry awards (or snubs) some of the most beloved titles across film and TV. The latest awards lineup comes courtesy of the Directors Guild of America, which today announced the nominees across seven television categories.

Last year, the DGA television awards were largely dominated by "Succession" — as was every other TV-based awards show. But in its absence, both new and old titles have stepped up to vie for the spotlight. For drama series, the nominations went to Jason Bateman ("Ozark"), Vince Gilligan, ("Better Call Saul"), Sam Levinson, ("Euphoria"), Aoife McArdle ("Severance"), and Ben Stiller ("Severance").

Elsewhere, the DGAs are rightfully recognizing two of last year's best half-hours of television: the intense single-shot episode of "The Bear" and the impeccable sixth episode of "Barry" season 3. Hilariously,...

Adam Scott in Severance (2022)
The Directors Guild of America has announced its nominations in its television categories, with several new series, including “Wednesday,” “Severance,” and “The Bear” receiving nominations alongside returning series such as “Ozark,” “Better Call Saul” and “The White Lotus”

At last year’s DGA television awards, “Succession” dominated the drama series category with all five of the nominees. This year, with that HBO series on hiatus, the nominees went to Jason Bateman (“Ozark”), Vince Gilligan (“Better Call Saul”), Sam Levinson (“Euphoria”), and Aoiff McArdle and Ben Stiller for two separate episodes of “Severance.”

In the comedy series category, Tim Burton scored his first ever career DGA nomination, for “Wednesday.” Burton was joined by Bill Hader (“Barry”), Amy Sherman-Palladino (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Christopher Storer (“The Bear”), and Mike White (“The White Lotus”).

2022 DGA Awards: Jane Campion Takes Top Prize for ‘The Power of the Dog’ (Complete Winners List)
Image
This weekend is a big one for Oscar watchers, with two awards ceremonies that often predict key categories. Sunday marks the biggest night of the year in British film, with the BAFTAs, whose winners often mirror those of the Oscars, taking place. But first, the biggest names in directing came out for the Directors Guild of America Awards. Judd Apatow returned to host the DGAs, which honor outstanding achievement in directing film, television, and commercials.

The feature film nominees at the DGAs were almost identical to the Best Director nominees at the Oscars, with winner Jane Campion (“The Power of the Dog”) competing against Paul Thomas Anderson (“Licorice Pizza”), Steven Spielberg (“West Side Story”), and Kenneth Branagh (“Belfast”. The only difference is that the DGAs swapped in Denis Villeneuve (“Dune”) for Ryûsuke Hamaguchi (“Drive My Car”).

On the television side, “Succession” and “Ted Lasso” have absolutely dominated the nominations. “Ted Lasso...

2022 DGA Awards: Winners list includes Jane Campion, Maggie Gyllenhaal and …
Image
The 74th Directors Guild of America Awards took place on Saturday, March 12 at 7:30 p.m. Pt with Judd Apatow hosting the in-person, non-televised ceremony. (Read our minute-by-minute live blog.) These kudos honored the best helmers of the year in movies and television, as voted on by more than 18,000 members of the directing guild. Scroll down for the 2022 DGA Awards winners list in three film and eight TV categories.

The all-important feature film category is one of the most telling bellwethers for the Best Director Oscar. The guild and the academy have only disagreed eight times over the past seven decades, including in 2019 when Sam Mendes (“1917”) won the DGA but Bong Joon Ho (“Parasite”) claimed the Oscar. Will this year’s winner follow the path of so many prior champs? Reminder: four of the guild’s nominees also reaped Oscar bids: Jane Campion (“The Power of the Dog”), Steven Spielberg...

2022 Directors Guild Awards nominations for TV: ‘Succession’ (x5), ‘Ted Lasso’ (x3) and …
Image
On Wednesday, January 26, the Directors Guild of America (DGA) announced its 2022 nominations for television, commercials and documentaries. Winners of the 74th annual DGA Awards will be rewarded on March 12, 2022 in a ceremony that also honors motion pictures (those noms will be announced on Jan. 27). Read on for the complete list of 2022 Directors Guild Awards nominations for TV, which includes a nice mix of freshman series (like “Hacks” and “The White Lotus”) and established fare (like “Succession” and “Ted Lasso”).

SEEReminder: Here’s who won last year’s DGA Awards

This year’s drama series line-up is filled out by a single show: “Succession.” That’s right, the HBO family drama earned all five spots in the category, an historic first for the guild. ‘Succession’ Leads Directors Guild’s TV Noms With First Drama Sweep Since 1983
Robert Clohessy, Michael Warren, and Bruce Weitz in Hill Street Blues (1981)
The Directors Guild of America has announced its nominations in its television categories, with “Succession” sweeping the drama-series category by landing all five nominations for different episodes.

The last time a single series swept all the nominations in the category was 1983, when “Hill Street Blues” took every slot in a category that at the time only consisted of three nominations. No program, drama or comedy, has ever swept all five nominations in a DGA Awards series category.

In the comedy series category, “Ted Lasso” took three of the five slots, with “Hacks” and “The White Lotus” taking the remaining two.

In the category devoted for TV movies and limited series, the nominees were Barry Jenkins for “The Underground Railroad,” Barry Levinson and Danny Strong for separate episodes of “Dopesick,” Hiro Murai for “Station Eleven” and Craig Zobel for “Mare of Easttown.”

Other nominees include Bo Burnham for his special “Bo...

John Oliver Has the Octopus-Appreciation Segment You Won’t Want to Miss (Video)
John Oliver in Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (2014)
Octopuses — and definitely not octopi, we’ll let John Oliver explain why — are freaking majestic geniuses, according to this “Last Week Tonight” web-exclusive video. And yet, as the HBO host correctly called out, the sea creature does not get nearly enough credit. For what? Every. Single. Thing.

The clip, uploaded on Sunday, when Oliver was off again for his continuing summer hiatus, should probably terrify viewers as much as it wows and informs them. Why? Well, octopuses are Clearly just biding time to take over the Earth.

Watch the video above and you’ll pretty quickly see what we mean.

“Look, look, America — and to some extent, the world. All I’ve been trying to say with this piece — and in a way, my entire life — is that octopuses are cool,” Oliver wound down his 10-minute tribute. “Cats have dominated the internet for far too long and it is past...

John Oliver Crams as Much Asian-American History as He Can Into a 27-Minute Segment (Video)
John Oliver in Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (2014)
John Oliver dedicated the vast majority of Sunday’s “Last Week Tonight” to educate HBO viewers on Asian-American history. He treaded lightly on the way in.

“Before we start, I fully recognize the history of white people on TV generalizing confidently on this subject isn’t great,” Oliver acknowledged up front.

Much of the 27-minute segment was dedicated to the concept of the “model minority,” a phrase often attached to Asian Americans with generally good intentions, but one that also dismisses a member’s individuality and applies undo pressures upon those in the group.

Before Oliver got there though, he helped (white) viewers actually understand just how wide-ranging the term “Asian American” even is. Currently, Asian Americans make up about 7% of the overall U.S. population. It is the fastest-growing racial group.

And if you wanted statistics on income, well, he’s got those too.

Watch the video above.

HBO host calls Fox News personality “one of the most prominent super spreaders” of Covid-19

John Oliver used pretty much his entire “Last Week Tonight” episode Sunday to implore viewers to get the damn Covid-19 vaccine already. The HBO host ripped some other popular media personalities — Tucker Carlson, Alex Jones and Joe Rogan, who has been discouraging that message — in the process.

Oliver called it “generally dispiriting” that we’ve gone from a coronavirus-vaccine supply issue to a demand shortage. Why are people not getting the series of shots? Oliver has a theory.

Like, “this f—ing guy” Tucker Carlson, whom Oliver referred to as “one of the most prominent super spreaders” of the deadly virus.

“It is generally weird to see someone hosting a show on a supposed news network and ending every sentence with a question mark,” Oliver said. “Especially when answers to most of those questions are...

John Oliver Dunks ‘Shark Tank’ Star Kevin O’Leary for ‘Terrible Lesson’ on Bankruptcy (Video)
John Oliver in Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (2014)
John Oliver took on the bankruptcy process last night, when “Shark Tank” star Kevin O’Leary got credit for being a total jerk.

On an episode of the ABC series “Shark Tank,” Kevin O’Leary called an entrepreneur who had previously filed for bankruptcy “radioactive.” The HBO “Last Week Tonight” host then turned that TV clip right around.

“Well hold on, because that is a terrible lesson,” Oliver said. “And you, Kevin O’Leary, are hardly one to be calling someone’s decisions ‘radioactive,’ given that you invested in companies with business models like, ‘Put your face on a potato,’ ‘Look like an idiot on a unicycle’ and Toygaroo, the Netflix for toys, whose mascot always looked like it was searching for a place to take a s—. And, which interestingly, filed for f—ing bankruptcy. So I’m sorry Kevin, but to me, that makes you radioactive. I’m out.

John Oliver Zings Andrew Cuomo in ‘Last Week Tonight’ Episode About Nursing Homes (Video)
John Oliver in Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (2014)
John Oliver didn’t waste any time ribbing New York City mayor Andrew Cuomo on Sunday’s “Last Week Tonight” episode about nursing homes, calling the facilities “the absolute last thing you want Andrew Cuomo to be handling, tied comfortably with literally anything else.”

That zinger came from the very first line of the HBO host’s 20-plus-minute segment. Given the topic at hand, things got a bit more somber from there.

“The truth is, Covid just exposed what we’ve basically known for years,” Oliver said. “That the way the elderly and disabled are treated in far too many of these facilities is with, at best, indifference, and at worst, abuse and neglect.

Sadly, a nursing home resident’s level of care could very much be dependent upon who is footing the bill.

“If Medicare is paying, the risk is you could be billed for unnecessary treatments,” Oliver said last night.

HBO has renewed late night series, “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” for three more seasons, taking it through 2023.

‘Last Week Tonight With John Oliver’ Renewed At HBO For Three Seasons
Image
John Oliver is sticking with HBO for another three years after the premium cable network renewed Last Week Tonight through 2023.

It seems ‘Business Daddy’, Oliver’s pet-name for WarnerMedia parent company AT&T, is happy to stay in business with the Brit comedian.

The show, which is produced by Avalon and Oliver’s Sixteen String Jack Productions, is currently in its seventh season, having recently aired its 200th episode. The deal, announced by HBO and HBO Max Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys, will take the show through to its tenth season.

It comes as Last Week Tonight, which takes a satirical, if sometimes rather weird and wonderful, look at the week in news, politics and current events, is the favorite to take home another Emmy, having won the Outstanding Variety Talk Series category every year since 2016.

The series, which is currently on hiatus until September 27, airs on HBO on Sunday nights at 11pm.

John Oliver’s ‘Last Week Tonight’ Renewed by HBO Through 2023
Image
John Oliver will be bringing his biting satire to HBO for at least three more years.

The premium cabler has announced it has renewed “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” for three more seasons, taking the British comedian’s run through 10 seasons and through the year 2023.

News of the pickup comes around two weeks after Oliver aired his last episode on the Republican National Convention and the protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin over the police shooting of Jacob Blake. Season 7 also saw Oliver cover the coronavirus pandemic, which forced “Last Week Tonight” out of its CBS Broadcast Center studio back in March, police brutality, and the George Floyd protests.

Casey Bloys, chief content officer for HBO and HBO Max, unveiled Oliver’s new deal.

“For the past seven years, John and his incredibly talented team have taken on topics that are both in the public mind and off the beaten path,...

‘Watchmen’ Is the Watchword at DGA TV Awards, as HBO Wins Big
Judd Apatow
We’re two paltry weeks away from the Oscars and while the race for Best Picture continues to narrow, the Emmy race couldn’t be more wide open. That’s not to say that there aren’t a few conclusions to be drawn from TV’s winter awards cycle, but their significance remains to be seen.

Saturday night saw the Directors Guild of America step into the spotlight and celebrate the artists in their midst. Hosted by fellow director Judd Apatow, it was a ceremony even Jimmy Hoffa could love, with many winners touting the benefit of working within a strong union.

“I’m very moved by this,” “Chernobyl” director Johan Renck said of his award. “As a Swede I really believe in the power of unions and organized labor for justice and solidarity.”

HBO came out on top, winning Dramatic Series (Nicole Kassell for “Watchmen”), Comedy Series (Bill Hader...

Directors Guild Awards 2020: Sam Mendes Wins Top Prize for ‘1917’
Sam Mendes at an event for Revolutionary Road (2008)
Sam Mendes has been named the best feature-film director of 2019 by the Directors Guild of America, which handed out its annual awards on Saturday at the Ritz-Carlton in Los Angeles.

The win makes the “1917” director a commanding front-runner in the Oscar race for Best Directors — and coupled with his film’s victory at the Producers Guild Awards last week, makes the World War I drama the favorite to win Best Picture winner as well.

Mendes beat his fellow Oscar nominees Bong Joon Ho (“Parasite”), Quentin Tarantino (“Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood”) and Martin Scorsese (“The Irishman”), as well as “Jojo Rabbit” director Taika Waititi.

The DGA Award is one of the most reliable Oscar predictors, with the winner going on to win the Academy Award for Best Director for the last six years in a row, 15 times in the last 16 years and 62 times in 71 years.

In addition, the film...
