A wild story has come out of the new Netflix documentary Titan: The OceanGate Submersible Disaster, in which the company’s late CEO had apparently expressed a desire to have Pearl Jam on board the underwater craft that imploded on an expedition to view the Titanic wreckage.
The Titan submersible infamously imploded in June 2023, killing OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush and four other passengers, making headlines worldwide.
In the Netflix doc, which was released Wednesday (June 11), Joseph Assi, a videographer named who was hired by Rush, says that the CEO was looking to put the spotlight on his fledgling company, as reported by Loudwire.
“They needed more exposure, that’s why we came along,” explains Assi. “The sub they were making was very basic, so the idea was – ‘Make us videos so we can catch the attention of people.’”
He continues, “They had wild ideas, like they want to take Pearl Jam in the submarine,...

Donald Trump’s recent unhinged tirades against Bruce Springsteen have inadvertently started to shape the coolest supergroup imaginable. Bono is the latest musician to back Springsteen as the president continues to target the New Jersey legend in response to criticism about his administration. During a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the musician was asked who he’s siding with in this pseudo-war, to which he responded: “There’s only one Boss in America.”

Warning: The following piece contains spoilers about the latest episode of The Last of Us
The Last of Us cocreator Neil Druckmann wouldn’t always direct the penultimate episode of Season 2. However, after conversing with cocreator Craig Mazin, The Last of Us Part II video game cocreator Halley Gross, and star Pedro Pascal, Druckmann’s choice became obvious.
“Pedro really wanted to work with me again, so I was eyeing 206, and I was kind of really sitting with it, because it's a pretty big commitment once you pick one of these things. But I just liked the idea of doing one more deep dive, one last bite of the apple, with Joel and Ellie [Bella Ramsey], these characters I love so much.”

Music is an important element through both the "Last of Us" video games and the live-action HBO adaptation. Both have a strong style of primary background music, which relies on a lot of acoustic guitar to play into the story's neo-zombie-Western vibe. In addition to the scoring, "The Last of Us" also relies heavily on diegetic music. Joel (Pedro Pascal) plays guitar himself and tells Ellie (Bella Ramsey) in season 1 that he would have liked to have been a singer. In season 2, she's learned to play too after years of learning from him, though the schism in their relationship pushes her away from the instrument.
There are other notable examples, like the use of Linda Ronstadt's "Long Long Time" during the Bill (Nick Offerman) and Frank (Murray Bartlett) episode of season 1, in which the heartbreaker tune serves as both episode title and thematic throughline.

There’s more mushroom madness on the way from HBO, with season 2 of The Last of Us continuing the story of Ellie and Joel after the apocalyptic adventure’s freshman series. Whereas season 1 was based on Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us video game, it took some creative liberties with the source material. It’s much of the same as showrunner Craig Mazin and Game Director Neil Druckmann tackle The Last of Us Part II, but with it, there’s already some controversy.
While season 2 opens shortly after Joel (Pedro Pascal) butchered a whole hospital of Fireflies in the season 1 finale, we don’t quite pick up where things left off. Although the opening scene neatly sets Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby on a mission of vengeance against Joel, like in the games, things soon get a five-year time jump as we return to the safe haven community of Jackson.

Paramount+ is ready to rock — and they've released over 125 episodes of musical performances to its streaming service to prove it. Coming at you from the other Viacom-owned properties like MTV Unplugged, VH1 Storytellers, and CMT Crossroads, many of the episodes haven't been seen since they first aired. And with a list of performances that includes the likes of Elton John, Neil Young, Mariah Carey, Pearl Jam, Bob Dylan, and even Nirvana's now-iconic November 1993 performance — which aired a mere seven months before the singer Kurt Cobain died — the list is a treasure trove for any music fan.
According to a press release from the streamer, more than 70 of the episodes have not been available to the public for more than 20 years. And, considering how much purging of content Paramount Global has done over the years, it's a relief to see that some things still get saved in the digital age.

Quick Links What's the Difference Between Spores and Tendrils? Spores Can Still Appear Thanks to a New Type of Infected
HBO's The Last of Us undeniably has some terrifying creatures, ranging from sprinting runners to limb-tearing bloaters. In an effort to seamlessly translate the video game's infected lore to the HBO series, showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann made one change that didn't entirely sit well with viewers: getting rid of the spores. The replacement was a new feature of the infected called tendrils, which are equally gross but may cause a major plot hole in Season 2. The tendrils weren't the only big departure from the story that worried fans about potential issues in Season 2.
Rather than making Outbreak Day in 2013 like the video game, the beginning of the end is actually in 2003. This means that Pearl Jam's "Future Days" (which was released in 2013) was canonically never written in...

Pearl Jam transformed Ted Nugent’s “Stranglehold” into an anti-gun anthem while briefly covering the 1975 single during their concert in Baltimore on Thursday (September 12th).
Halfway through the latest show on Pearl Jam’s North American tour (get tickets here), guitarist Mike McCready launched into the instantly recognizable opening riff of “Stranglehold.” Eddie Vedder joined in shortly afterward to repeatedly sing, “I don’t own a gun, I don’t ever want to own a gun/ I don’t own a gun, never want to own a gun.”

Once they were done, Vedder didn’t comment any further on the song, and the band launched into their own classic “Even Flow.” Watch fan-shot footage below.
As an outspoken gun rights advocate, Nugent was unsurprisingly displeased with Pearl Jam’s take on the song. In a tweet responding to the cover, he invited Vedder to “join...

Buzz Cason, the Nashville singer, songwriter and producer best known for “Everlasting Love,” the buoyant Motown-style pop song covered numerous times and appearing in many films since Robert Knight recorded the original in 1967, died June 16 at his home in Franklin, Tennessee. He was 84.
His death was announced by the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. A cause of death was not specified.
“Everlasting Love,” with its impossibly catchy and immediately recognizable chorus that begins “Open up your eyes/Then you’ll realize/Here I stand with my everlasting love,” has made the charts in various versions, most notably Carl Carlton’s 1974 cover that hinted at the imminent arrival of disco. In the U.K., the song was a #1 hit in 1968 by London-based pop band Love Affair.
Other artists who have covered the song, written by Cason with writing partner Mac Gayden, include Gloria Estefan, Rex Smith and Rachel Sweet , U2,...

Pearl Jam was in a state of love and trust at a recent show, inviting Bradley Cooper on stage to sing a song from A Star Is Born with the band’s lead singer, Eddie Vedder.
Pearl Jam has kept a consistent format on the Dark Matter Tour, with the majority of their first encores kicking off with covers: Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down”, Warren Zevon’s “Keep Me In Your Heart”, Tom Waits’ “Picture In a Frame”…But with their recent gig at BottleRock Napa Valley, the band built off of “Last Kiss” with yet another cover: “Maybe It’s Time” from 2018’s A Star Is Born, bringing out Bradley Cooper to help nail the soundtrack song.
By and large, reception for Bradley Cooper joining Pearl Jam has been quite receptive, especially as he helped boost the festival. It should be noted here and now that...

Cooper returned to the stage at the end of Pearl Jam’s set to join in on a rendition of Neil Young’s Rockin’ in the Free World.

When describing a big star’s new release, two clichés are frequently used: it is highly anticipated and long-awaited. Well, the 11th studio album by pop sensation Taylor Swift can’t exactly be called ‘long awaited’—just 18 months have passed since the release of her previous album, Midnights. The Grammy winner made her ‘highly anticipated’ 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, available on Friday, April 19, 2024.
The 16-track album is peaceful and enjoyable to listen to, but if you read the lyrics carefully—as most Swift fans do—you will discover a convoluted and disorganized stream of thought where Swift swings between waves of introspection, rage, longing, and grief.

Also, it is interesting to note that this latest album credits the two-time Oscar winner Emma Stone for her work on the song Florida!!!.

Andrew Watt and Pearl Jam entered the world at practically the same exact moment. The 33-year-old producer was born Oct. 20, 1990, the same week that Eddie Vedder traveled to Seattle from San Diego to meet his future bandmates for the first time. “They’ve said to me they were probably writing ‘Release’ while my mom was giving birth to me,” Watt says. “And then they played their first concert two days after that at the Off Ramp cafe. Before Jack Black took the pop culture world by storm with a breakout role in 2000's "High Fidelity," the actor, musician, and comedian had his doubts about the movie. In the latest issue of Total Film magazine, Black reflects back on his decades-long career and admits that he initially passed on the role of music junkie Barry over fears that it might negatively impact his own real-life music career.
"My friend, John Cusack, was like, 'You would be perfect for this role, Barry, in 'High Fidelity,'" Black recalled (Cusack starred in and co-wrote the movie). "I was hesitant because I was like, I don't know if I want to make a movie about rock and roll, and someone who is a critic of rock and roll." Though "High Fidelity" is a music-lovers' classic now, the film based on a Nick Hornby book features some painfully authentic music snobbery,...

Post Malone appeared on The Howard Stern Show on Tuesday, and while he was there, he delivered a stirring acoustic rendition of Alice in Chains’ signature hit, “Them Bones.” Watch the performance below.
Introducing it by saying “Hey, Howard, hopefully I don’t fuck these lyrics up,” Post began his take on the song, playing guitarist Jerry Cantrell’s signature chromatic riff on a beefy acoustic guitar, as he was backed by a choir. Building tension through the opening verse, the arrangement blossomed on the first chorus when the drum line dropped and Post belted the iconic “Ah’s” originally delivered by Alice’s Layne Staley.
By the end of the song, Post was able to build enough energy with his gravelly croon that it’s easy to forget that you’re listening to an acoustic version of the grunge anthem. He finished it off with a final a cappella “Ah,...

The Last of Us season 2 may not be able to use the song Joel plays for Ellie in the game, but the show can replace it with another perfect track. The shift in The Last of Us television timeline doesn't directly affect the narrative, but it prevents the show from staying true to the music choices in the game. The show can use other songs from Pearl Jam, like "Alive," to replace "Future Days" and evoke a sense of familiarity and nostalgia in viewers.

Where to Watch Powered by Adapting The Last of Us Part II for television will require major changes and reconfigurations, given its expansive world and nonlinear narrative. The TV series will need to make Abby more sympathetic from the beginning, as the audience won't have the benefit of playing as her like in the game. Joel's death will be even more heartbreaking on screen, with the vulnerability of the actors amplifying the emotions of the scene.

Barack Obama has once again let people in on his version of the sounds of summer with his annual playlist for the season, with songs including “Fast Car” by Luke Combs, “Snooze” by Sza and the classic “(Sittin’ on) the Dock of the Bay” by Otis Redding.
The former commander-in-chief curated 41 songs for the list, which he posted on his Twitter account Thursday, representing genres ranging from folk to rap to pop. Among those chosen that drew attention on social media: Ice Spice and Nicki Minaj’s “Princess Diana,” and Boygenius’ “Not Strong Enough.”
Janelle Monáe’s “I Only Have Eyes for 42,” seemingly an ode to threesomes, also made the cut, which the entertainer noted on her Instagram stories: “Barack know what’s up!”
But Obama also featured more traditional songs on the list, like Aretha Franklin’s “Doctor Feelgood” and a live version of Leonard Cohen’s “Dance Me to the End of Love.

The time has come again for Barack Obama to share his summer playlist; as usual, it’s a mix of classics and modern hits. Catch the former president with headphones on, and you may hear him listening to modern cool kids like boygenius or Ice Spice and Nicki Minaj, or revered legends like Leonard Cohen. You may also hear him listening to “Walk Like an Egyptian.”
You could clown on Obama for including the latter track, but you can’t say The Bangles don’t deliver some summery fun! Those good vibes continue with cuts like 2Pac’s “California Love” and Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay.” Elsewhere, the 2023 playlist slows down for Pearl Jam’s “Just Breathe” and Luke Combs’ take on “Fast Car,” Tracy Chapman’s 1988 song that recently charted even higher than before thanks to the unlikely country cover.

In "The Summer I Turned Pretty" season two, the whole cast are reeling in the aftermath of the death of Susannah (Rachel Blanchard). As viewers watch what this first Susannah-less summer has in store for the characters, we also see flashbacks to the past year, including Susannah's funeral. In episode three, released alongside the first two episodes on July 14, Conrad (Christopher Briney) takes out a guitar and performs Pearl Jam's "Last Kiss" in honor of his late mom. Before giving his brief and heart-wrenching performance, he notes that Susannah always asked him to play it for her.
In the Jenny Han books the series is based on, Conrad does play guitar (though there's no mention of him singing). Although he doesn't play guitar or sing in the rest of season two, fans might wonder if that's really Briney singing the emotional song during the episode.

“Hey Now What’s the Problem?” follows the album’s debut single, “In The Moment That You’re Born,” which was released earlier this year. That song was unveiled on the 30-year anniversary of Brad’s debut album, Shame, which arrived on April 27th, 1993 via Epic Records.

Despite how faithful the show has been to the games, there is one major change on the way in The Last of Us season 2. After Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) completed their journey to the Fireflies, they returned to the Jackson settlement to forge a new life on their own. With season 2 on the way, Joel and Ellie will need to be ready to face a bigger crisis than ever before, and the show promises to keep its focus close to The Last of Us Part II.
Yet, there will likely still be changes between the HBO show and the original game, similar to the differences between the game and The Last of Us season 1. One likely change to come in The Last of Us season 2 involves a song Joel sings to Ellie. In the original game, Joel sings "Future Days" by Pearl Jam to bond with Ellie...

Former Pearl Jam drummer Dave Abbruzzese has joined forces with the Pearl Jam France Facebook community to rerecord the band’s 1993 classic “Rearviewmirror.” The seven-minute video cuts between several fans taking turns on vocals, guitars, and bass, while Abbruzzese handles the drums, just as he did on the original recording.
Abbruzzese was Pearl Jam’s third drummer, but the first two (Dave Krusen and Matt Chamberlain) had very brief stints, and his time with the group between 1991 and 1994 coincided with their commercial peak. He plays on Vs. and Vitalogy and...

As Covid-19 wanes in the United States, symptoms like loss of taste and smell are on the outs too. Imminently returning to the “in” list, though: hearing loss.
“This is a fucking rock concert!” yelled Dave Grohl, repeatedly, as a Foo Fighters performance that seemed a third louder than any other act’s capped the Global Citizen-produced Vax Live: The Concert to Reunite the World May 2. A TV taping for a special to air across networks on May 8, it doubled as the first concert at L.A.’s new SoFi Stadium, and America’s first real stadium show since the pandemic began. Even with the Foos bringing tinnitus back, you could hear the wider reverberations.
“I don’t know how it’ll be looked at three or five years from now,” said Ken Ehrlich, one of the broadcast’s executive producers, the day after filming. “But I can tell you...
