At a moment where the TV business is undergoing a dramatic transformation, and with the advertising business similarly in flux amid tariffs and technological changes, NBCUniversal’s Spanish-language media division Telemundo Enterprises is betting that live events and programming — a lot of them — will help it stand out in a marketplace that is as crowded as ever.

Executives at the company say that over 70 percent of Telemundo’s lineup will be live over the next season, including NFL and NBA games, live news and entertainment specials, and next year’s FIFA World Cup, where Telemundo has the Spanish-language rights.

Much of it will stream on Peacock of course, but for Telemundo it is also a game plan to shore up linear, giving its lineup as much can’t miss programming as possible.

Telemundo has found its new news chief.

The Spanish-language media company, owned by NBCUniversal, has named Gemma Garcia head of Noticias Telemundo.

Reporting to Telemundo chairman Luis Fernández, Garcia will work as executive VP of news, overseeing Telemundo’s news programming, editorial units, digital news properties, newsgathering and bureaus in the United States and Latin America, as well as coverage of the 2024 presidential election.

Garcia was most recently head of news at Rtve Play, the streaming service of Radio Televisión Española, Spain’s public broadcaster. But she is also a veteran of Telemundo as both a producer and executive, including a run as senior VP of digital news for the company.

Luis Fernández, an executive with experience in news, sports and entertainment media, has been named Chairman of NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises.

Beau Ferrari, who had held the Chairman title for the past three years, will segue to a senior advisory role working with NBCU News Group Chairman Cesar Conde to develop new opportunities for the news portfolio.

The new post marks a return to Telemundo for Fernández, who previously served as President of Noticias Telemundo, the Hispanic media company’s news division.

Fernández also served as CEO of Radio Television Española (Rtve), Spain’s state-owned public radio and television corporation, where he supervised television, radio and digital divisions. Telemundo Enterprises is getting a new chairman.

The Spanish-language content division of NBCUniversal has named Luis Fernández its new chairman. Fernández, the former president of its news division Noticias Telemundo, will report to Cesar Conde, who oversees the NBC News Group, the NBC local stations and Telemundo.

He succeeds Beau Ferrari, who was elevated to chairman of Telemundo three years ago. Ferrari will become a senior advisor to Conde.

Fernández, who had led Telemundo’s news division since 2015, had previously retired from the company at the end of 2021. Before joining Telemundo, he served as CEO of Radio Television Española (Rtve), Spain’s state-run TV and radio service; as president of Univision Entertainment and Univision Studios; and as international CEO of Real Madrid.

The cast of the Asacha Media-backed Spanish-Serbian thriller series Scar (Cicatriz) has taken shape.

Cameras are rolling today in Spain on the European co-production from Plano a Plano, Dopamine and Adrenalin. Milena Radulovic, Juanlu González, Luis Fernández will lead the scripted series, with Stefan Kapicic, Mladen Sovilj, Goran Susljik and Julen Serrano also attached.

Radulovic is known for Serbian-British drama series Besa and Russian thriller Superdeep, while González starred in Netflix’s Valeria and the popular Spanish TV crime series La Caza, La Otra Mirada and features including Operación Camarón.

Skydance Animation announced Tuesday that it has finalized a multi-year partnership with children’s entertainment company Spin Master to develop toys and merchandise based on their properties.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with a company like Spin Master that is as committed to quality and attention to detail as we are,” Luis Fernández, head of consumer products at Skydance, said in a statement. “As we ramp up production on our slate of animated features, we could not imagine a better partner to bring our visually stunning and epic animated worlds to life.”
