Tracking Shot January 2011: Shame, Looper, Life of Pi and The Iron Lady
At the beginning of every month, Ioncinema.com's "Tracking Shot" features a handful of projects that are moments away from lensing and in the same token, we feel are worth signaling out. We ring in the new year with nine titles going into production this month that are worth pointing out. Among the projects that were originally slated for January but are slightly pushed back we have Valerie Faris & Jonathan Dayton's Will starring Paul Rudd Zach Galifianakis, the new Stephen Daldry film Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and Polanski's Carnage. This January can officially be called the "Abi Morgan" month as the scribe has not one but two projects that'll be lensed: Steve McQueen’s sex addiction drama Shame, and The Iron Lady, starring Meryl Streep as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. In U.S productions we have Joe Carnahan's The Grey - which we feel is oddly...

Tracking Shot November 2011: The Deep Blue Sea, Cool Water, Friends with Kids
At the beginning of every month, Ioncinema.com's "Tracking Shot" features a handful of projects that are moments away from lensing and in the same token, we feel are worth signaling out. This November there is a significant drop in mention worthy titles -- but we have three seasoned auteurs and a female director making her debut. Emir Kusturica is supposed to commence filming a comedy with Tahar Rahim toplining. Commencing a production this late might hinder a Cannes 2011 debut. Cool Water is about two Palestinian brothers who smuggle the dead body of their father from Jerusalem to Ramallah with the Israeli Police, a bunch of terrorists and the Russian Mafia breathing down their necks. Let's hope for the old Kusturica to show up. Terence Davies (another Cannes regular) is adapting Terence Rattigan' play with Rachel Weisz in the lead for The Deep Blue Sea. She plays the wife...

Cannes 2011: 20 Predictions for Next Year's Festival
If the Main Competition suffered because of the lack of film output from last year (Venice and Tiff have already seen the benefits), next year's edition of the Cannes film festival is already shaping up to be a fantastic year with names like Pedro, Von Trier, Dardennes, Cronenberg, PTA and Salles in the possible line-up. For those who made a case about there not being much female representation -- they'll be pleased to see that the latest works from Andrea Arnold and Lynne Ramsay should be in the line-up --- and although I didn't add him to the list below, we could also see Steve McQueen's latest project in the fest. Here are a list of 20 projects I think will be in the fest next year. - If the Main Competition suffered because of the lack of film output from last year (Venice and Tiff have already seen the...

The Dardenne bros. have grabbed Cecile de France for an untitled drama that narratively resembles some of their previous efforts, and before Emir Kusturica teams with Johnny Depp on Pancho Villa, he'll direct Cool Water - a comedy, road movie that will tap into some of the zany scenarios that Kusturica is best know for... - Wild Bunch will come to Cannes packing a half dozen competition films, but they've got a huge slate of films to sell and two noteworthy titles have been added to their crop. Wild Bunch Packing Kusturica's Cool Water and Dardenne Bros.' Drama Starring Cecile de France
Wild Bunch will come to Cannes packing a half dozen competition films, but they've got a huge slate of films to sell and two noteworthy titles have been added to their crop. The Dardenne bros. have grabbed Cecile de France for an untitled drama that narratively resembles some of their previous efforts, and before Emir Kusturica teams with Johnny Depp on Pancho Villa, he'll direct Cool Water - a comedy, road movie that will tap into some of the zany scenarios that Kusturica is best know for, but as chance might have it - will be the first time that the Serbian helmer works from someone else's script. Both projects count as early Cannes 2011 predictions - as they are both going to be lensed this summer. Cool Water is based on Gabriel Bornstein’s script, this is being billed as a road movie with a twist. Two Palestinian brothers must...

Johnny Depp Is Pancho Villa
We finally have confirmation thatJohnny Depp will take on the role of Pancho Villa in directorEmir Kusturica's upcoming project about the Mexican Revolutionary general.

The film, originally called Seven Friends Of Pancho Villa And The Woman With Six Fingers, will now be titled Wild Roses, Tender Roses, and will begin shooting in February 2011 now that Depp and Kusturica, who worked previously together on Arizona Dream, have found time in both of their schedules to fit in the project.

The film will be shot in Spain and in Kusturica's Serbian studio, while Kusturica's band, the No Smoking Orchestra, will do music for the film as well. As promised, the film will indeed be shot in Spanish, with Depp performing his dialogue in that language.

Before all that though, Kusturica will be working in Israel this summer on Cool Water, a film about a male stripper who returns to his native Middle East for his father's funeral.
