Aziz Ansari’s Master Of None is a heart-wrenching and hilarious series. Here’s why it needs a spot on your Netflix queue...

Netflix is fast making a name for itself as a home for inventive, thoughtful comedy. BoJack Horseman is an emotional reflection on stardom and ageing, told through the lens of an animal-stuffed animated series. Love reinvented the rom-com, showing us how ‘happily ever after’ is just a cliché. And today we’re going to talk about Master Of None, Aziz Ansari’s New York-set series, which may be the streaming service’s most impressive Lol-inducing output to date.

Netflix Originals are a strange beast because they're not always on Netflix and they're not always original. Take a glance at some of the properties currently touted as being a Netflix Original: Scream, Orphan Black, and Better Call Saul. Each originally aired on a separate channel and were made by a different production company.

While some of the shows that aren't real Netflix Originals are excellent, for the purpose of this article we'll be casting our eyes over the productions made by Netflix available solely on Netflix. We'll confine things to TV for now, although some of Netflix's cinematic output is well worth a watch (The Fundamentals Of Caring and Tallulah are excellent starting points).

On The Tonight Show last night, Aziz Ansari stopped by and revisited a bit from his book Modern Romance, wherein he examines the best and worst ways to text someone. In the Tonight Show segment, Ansari and Fallon dramatically recreate the worst of the worst over candlelight.  The very real texts range from confused misspellings to heartbreaking lengthy declarations of love that are met with a point blank "No" but at least, in the hands of Ansari and Fallon, they're all hilarious. ...

Aziz Ansari and Jimmy Fallon dusted off the candles and roses with a fresh batch of unfortunately real dating texts on The Tonight Show Wednesday.

The bit originated from Ansari's book, Modern Romance, which examines dating in the digital age. The book includes a section about the best and worst ways to text a potential partner. Netflix streaming has a wealth of great stand up specials for fans of comedy. Lately the service has been even releasing Netflix Original specials from famous comedians. It is almost overwhelming how much hilariously good stand up comedy Netflix has at the moment.

After the success of shows like Orange is the New Black and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and standup specials from talents like Aziz Ansari and Chelsea Peretti, it was clear that Netflix was on its way to becoming a major player in comedy. Master of None, the new series from Ansari and Alan Yang, will perhaps become the crown jewel of Netflix’s comedy empire. The perspective the creators have brought to the show feels more on the pulse of its generation than Hannah Horvath could have dreamed of ever being.

There are ten episodes in the first season, five of which were watched for this preview. Each episode plays like a half-hour short film, with predictably hilarious dialogue and more visual flourish than expected. Ansari plays Dev, a thirtysomething...

Despite bringing in lower-than-expected returns in the third quarter of 2015, Netflix still has plenty of intriguing projects on the horizon, including several new original series. The next series to make its debut will be Master of None, a comedy starring Aziz Ansari that will premiere on November 6th.

Master of None stars Ansari as Dev, a semi-autobiographical romantic who lives in New York City. In the show’s recently released trailer, we can get a feel for the sort of topics Dev and his friends will explore. The central theme is love, which is a favorite topic of Ansari’s; the stand-up comic and former Parks and Recreation cast member recently authored a book called Modern Romance, in which he opines on the nature of dating in the 21st century.

For a segment amusingly titled "First Textual Experience," The Tonight Show asked viewers to send in real-life first texts they received from awkward individuals attempting to secure a date and failing miserably.

Host Jimmy Fallon and guest Aziz Ansari then read the cringe-worthy missives in a segment that immediately went viral.

British director Jamie Adams is preparing to release the final part of his trilogy of improvised films later this year.

Black Mountain Poets stars Tom Cullen (Downton Abbey), Alice Lowe (Sightseers) and comedy actress Dolly Wells.

The relationship comedy was shot in five days last October in the Black Mountains of Wales and was entirely improvised.

It will mark Adams’ third feature in two years when it is released theatrically and on demand this autumn, self-distributed by Jolene Films.

Cardiff-based Jolene Films released Adams’ first feature Benny & Jolene, starring Craig Roberts (Submarine) and Charlotte Ritchie (Fresh Meat), via Verve Pictures in June 2014.

Aziz Ansari kicked off the Los Angeles leg of his Modern Romance tour Tuesday night at the Wiltern Theater. Despite his through line that contemporary life and romance live digitally instead of through actual human interaction, Ansari brings his audience into his performance. Quite a bit. Some other things that might surprise you. 1) He starts on time. Dude is a professional. The Wiltern said he'd go on 8:30 and Ansari took the stage at 8:30 p.m. sharp, clad in what had to be a custom-made suit. That alone is going to take a house full of Angelenos by surprise.

Bill Hader has come a long way since his stint on Saturday Night Live, creating many popular characters and impersonations such as Stefon, Vincent Price and CNN’s Jack Cafferty. He is one of the highlights in such films as Adventureland, Knocked Up, Superbad and Pineapple Express, and so it is easy to see why author Mike Sacks interviewed him for his new book Poking A Dead Frog. In it, Hader talks about his career and he also lists 200 essential movies every comedy writer should see. Xo Jane recently published the list for those of us who haven’t had a chance to read the book yet. There are a ton of great recommendations and plenty I haven’t yet seen, but sadly my favourite comedy of all time isn’t mentioned. That would be Some Like It Hot. Still, it really is a great list with a mix of old and new.

Ray Donovan is being sold as a new Showtime series, but right now it feels like it’s actually two shows. The first show — about a family of tough South Boston Irish-Americans who relocate to Los Angeles, and start a boxing gym and a combination private eye/protection service that caters to celebrities — is pretty good, if you’re not burned out on the “Tough White Dude Can’t Control His Inner Demons but Has a Good Heart” genre. The other show — a send-up of America’s one-percenters, and of the petty hustlers and lost souls that latch onto them like lampreys onto sharks — is much better. In fact, it’s close to great. Like The Larry Sanders Show, The Comeback, The Limey, Modern Romance, Get Shorty, David Mamet’s Wag the Dog and State and Main, and other great showbiz satires, this second program picks its targets and takes...

Chicago – With Mother’s Day around the corner, Warner Bros. has released another one of their stellar DVD box sets built around their 100th anniversary — “Best of Warner Bros. 20 Film Collection: Romance.” It may not be the best gift set for everyone but it does offer a strong package for those who like a little emotional manipulation with their popcorn. There are some undeniable classics in this set (along with some questionable choices) but it’s the sheer “something for everyone” quality of the release that makes it memorable.

Los Angeles film goers get a little more spoiled this week as the Cinefamily is hosting The 1st Annual Wayne Federman International Film Festival. Federman is one of those classic "that guy" actors everyone knows and he came up with the idea to get a bunch of famous stand-up comedians to pick films that inspire them, introduce, screen and talk about them.
