History Talks: Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Kevin Costner, Eva Longoria, Kate Winslet and John Legend Look Back to Move Forward
Image
Two former U.S. presidents, one former first lady and noted historians, authors, academics and journalists gathered Saturday at the Academy Museum for a History Talks event that looked at moments of conflict in the nation’s past to bring perspective to the polarization of the present.

The 2010s were “a decade of indignation,” said David Brooks, New York Times political and cultural columnist. “That decade is now giving way – people want something more joyful.”

The event hosted by A+E Networks’ History Channel featured Q&As with President Barack Obama, who engaged playfully with Malcolm Gladwell, and President George W. Bush and first lady Laura Bush. That pair opened the half-day event with a wide-ranging conversation conducted by their daughter, “Today” co-host Jenna Bush Hager.

Other speakers at included Kevin Costner, Eva Longoria, Kerry Washington, Kate Winslet, Nicole Avant and John Legend. The event drew a large industry crowd,...

A Media Moment: News Organizations Challenged To Win Public Trust In An Assault Of Mixed Messages
Image
Editors note: This is one of those moments when the flow of news seems like an assault on the senses. The Donald trump trial, the student protests, Gaza, the election campaigning — will our trust in the media survive these traumas? Can our pop culture assimilate them? Peter Bart, based on the West Coast, and Ted Johnson, Deadline’s political and media editor in Washington DC, lend their perspectives to these questions.

Ted Johnson: The Trump trial augurs badly for the public paying attention to balanced, in-depth coverage. This is, after all, the first time that a former President has faced a criminal trial and I fear the takeaway will be — well, exhaustion.

With cameras barred, the TV networks are trying to achieve a sort of blanket coverage, with scrolls delivering legal analyses occasionally interrupted by Trump’s bursts of hallway rhetoric. Saturday’s White House Correspondents Dinner will be...

Bill Maher Says ‘Quiet on Set’ Made Nickelodeon Look Like “Neverland Ranch With Craft Services”
Image
Bill Maher took some time during his “New Rules” segment on Real Time Friday to offer his takeaways from the Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV docuseries.

“As one of the few people in the public eye who’s gone through life and never had kids, someone’s got to tell me why I’m always having to defend them,” the host said. “I don’t even like them, but I do think it’s every adult’s job to protect them.”

His initial reaction to Investigation Discovery’s five-part docuseries, which details allegations of abuse, sexism, racism and inappropriate behavior involving underage actors on Nickelodeon TV show sets, was, “Omg!”

“Nickelodeon? It wasn’t a studio, it was Neverland Ranch with craft services,” he shared of his portrayal of the Network after watching the series. “It is just scene after scene, clip and clip, of the...

Bill Maher Says ‘Quiet On Set’ Made Nickelodeon Seem Like Neverland Ranch
Image
An exasperated Bill Maher, notorious for not having his own children, asked on Friday’s ‘Real Time’ why he is the one who is always left trying to defend them.

In his “New Rules” editorial, Maher trained his guns on the shocking Max documentary Quiet on Set, which detailed what the past young stars went through on the Nick sets. “Omg,” was Maher’s opening salvo.

Maher said that the Nickelodeon depicted “wasn’t a studio – it was Neverland Ranch with craft services.” He said the documentary was “scene after scene of the child stars of their day being exposed to…degradation.” He added, “I was grossed out and I’ve gone camping with John Waters.”

The documentary is the talk of the town in Los Angeles, Maher said, but pointed out that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was derided when he was saying the same things about Disney’s actions.

‘Morning Joe’ Hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski Hope NBC “Will Reconsider” Ronna McDaniel Hire
Image
The fallout continues at NBC News over the hiring of former Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel.

On Monday morning, MSNBC Morning Joe hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski weighed in on her hiring as a political analyst, saying that they had been “inundated with calls” about the controversial move.

“We learned about the hiring when we read about it in the press on Friday,” Scarborough said to viewers.

“We weren’t asked our opinion of the hiring but if we were, we would have strongly objected to it for several reasons,” he continued, discussing her role in the aftermath of the 2020 Election to pressure election officials.

“To be clear, we believe NBC News should seek out conservative Republican voices to provide balance in their election coverage,” Brzeznski continued. “But it should be conservative Republicans, not a person who used her position of power to be an anti-democracy election denier,...

NBA Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade is considered one of the greatest to ever play the game of basketball, winner of three NBA championships and a gold medal at the Olympic Games. For those accomplishments, he and the rare sports figures on his level earn widespread public adulation.

“As athletes, we get tags on us — called heroes. We’re looked at as heroes, by a lot of people in the world,” Wade notes. “And I’m not saying that that’s not right for what we do, but when you talk about real heroes, we’re talking about the Arlos of the world.”

Arlo Washington in ‘The Barber of Little Rock’

Jon Meacham Gets Blunt About Trump’s 4th Indictment: ‘This Was a Coup D’Etat’ (Video)
Jon Meacham
Presidential historian Jon Meacham chose his words very purposefully on “Morning Joe” the morning after Donald Trump’s fourth indictment, saying what Trump attempted – and is being indicted for – was plainly a coup d’etat.

“You have this whole cast of characters who’ve been indicted now in Fulton County who were attempting – and I use this word very, very advisably, I’m not just popping off here – this was a coup d’etat. This was an attempt to seize power that was not legitimately granted by the electoral processes of the Constitution of the United States. Full stop. That’s what it was.”

On Monday night, Trump and 18 others were indicted in Georgia for a number of charges ranging from racketeering to forgery to soliciting public law officers to violate their oaths. The defendants “knowingly and willfully joined a conspiracy to unlawfully change the outcome of the election in favor of Trump,...

King Charles Coronation: U.S. Networks Play Up Royal Pomp With A Dose Of Reality Show Drama
Image
A common theme in U.S. network coverage of King Charles’ coronation was, why are Americans so fasciated by this?

Starting around 5 a.m. Et, the better question might as well have been, why are they up watching this?

As the king started their procession down the streets of London, commentator after commentator weighed in. On MSNBC, historian Jon Meacham quoted Shakespeare’s Henry V and said of the pageantry unfolding, “It is this marvelous cocktail, if you will, of the human, the divine, the democratic, the monarchial, the English and to some extent American.”

Others mentioned the colonial history of the U.S. and the special relationship between the two countries.

Perhaps the most succinct explanation came from Fox News’ Benjamin Hall, recently returned after recovering from severe injuries while covering the war in Ukraine, who said, “You’ve got pomp and circumstance, you’ve got a bit of...

MSNBC’s ‘Morning Joe’ Will Greet Jewel, Live Studio Audience For Post-Midterms Broadcast
Image
Mika Brzezinski had been about as close to Jewel, the folk singer known for her hit “Who Will Save Your Soul” as Coca-Cola is to mayonnaise. But the two recently struck a connection that will have the musician appearing on one of the most distinctive broadcasts of Brzezinski’s long-running MSNBC program, “Morning Joe.”

On Wednesday, November 9, the day after the 2022 midterm elections, Kilcher will appear with Brzezinski, Joe Scarborough and Willie Geist while they spend their program’s four hours analyzing the results and what they could mean for both Republicans and Democrats. Mike Barnicle and Jen Psaki will also appear, along with analysts ranging from Katty Kay to Jon Meacham. But Kilcher represents something a little different. Yes. she has expressed political views in the past, but she’s not the sort of politics aficionado who regularly visits the program.

Bill Maher Gives A ‘Real Time’ Take On Joe Biden, Post-Midterms, History As Fan Fiction
Image
Bill Maher thinks Joe Biden is currently doing a good job. But he also warned against fan fiction as history, perhaps offering a contradiction that only he understands.

Maher started off the Real Time night strong with a one-on-one featuring country singer Trace Adkins, who is also starring in the new Fox TV series Monarch with Susan Sarandon. Adkins sat down and said that Maher occasionally told a funny joke. Maher pounced. “We’re indoors, you can take the hat off,” he said, following up with “Oh, is that shit on your shoes?”

But it was all in good fun. Adkins is well-known as a conservative, allowing that he stays away from political discussions with the ultra-liberal Sarandon to keep the peace. “We did our work and stayed away from everything else,” Adkins said, which Maher saw as a formula the rest of America should adopt.

Maher couldn’t resist...

David McCullough Dies: Pulitzer Prize Winning Historian Was 89
Image
David McCullough, the two-time Pulitzer Prize winning historian whose biographies gave character and compelling narratives to figures and moments that make up the fabric of the American experience, has died. He was 89.

His publisher, Simon & Schuster, said that McCullough died on Sunday at his home in Hingman, Ma, surrounded by his five children.

Two of McCullough’s most famous works, presidential biographies of Harry Truman in 1992 and John Adams in 2001, not only won Pulitzer Prizes but were turned into TV miniseries. His gift for storytelling translated into that of a narrator of documentaries like Ken Burns’ Civil War.

McCullough received the National Book Award for The Path Between the Seas, about the building of the Panama Canal, and Mornings on Horseback, a biography of Theodore Roosevelt. Other best sellers included The Johnstown Flood, The Great Bridge, Brave Companions, 1776, The Greater Journey, The Wright Brothers, and The American Spirit. He also...

Why White House Officials Are Descending on TV News
Image
The nation’s biggest TV-news outlets have made it increasingly easy for top officials in the White House to have a presence in your house.

If White House press secretary Jen Psaki joins MSNBC as expected, she will be the second Biden official to land at the NBCUniversal-owned network in the space of less than a year. She will join Symone Sanders, a former campaign adviser to President Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders, at MSNBC, where she is taking on a weekend show that will also have a streaming presence.

Psaki declined to discuss her negotiations with MSNBC Friday during a White House press briefing, but two people familiar with the matter say she has been weighing potential roles with both CNN and MSNBC and should surface at the latter by autumn.

She isn’t alone in her interest in TV news. Mick Mulvaney, the former Trump administration aide,...

January 6th Anniversary Gets Wildly Different Treatment On Cable News Primetime: “Trump’s Failed Coup” Vs. “Barely Rates As A Footnote”
Image
All of the news networks carried events marking the anniversary of January 6th, albeit with differences in tone and tenor, but by the time of the opinion-heavy primetime hours, there were wildly different characterizations of the significance of attack on the Capitol.

MSNBC’s Chris Hayes opened his how at 8 Pm Et saying that “today we saw on full display the battle over the meaning of this date,” talking of Donald Trump’s “failed coup” as the probably the most infamous event since 9/11.

Fox News’s Tucker Carlson said it was “really just only a riot — maybe just barely,” while he again gave a platform to a theory that the events were a “false flag” operation. He even had on as a guest Sen. Ted Cruz (R-tx), who rather sheepishly said it was “sloppy and it was frankly dumb” to refer to the January 6th riot as a “violent terrorist attack” earlier this week.

Lin-Manuel Miranda Marks January 6th Anniversary With ‘Hamilton” Cast Performance For Capitol Event
Image
Lin-Manuel Miranda introduced a Hamilton cast performance of Dear Theodosia as part of the congressional events marking the first anniversary of the January 6th attack on the Capitol.

“We should never take our rights and liberties for granted, but we must remain committed to finding a way forward together,” said Miranda, appearing virtually, along with members of the cast.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi cited lyrics from the song: We’ll make it right for you. If we lay a strong enough foundation, we will pass it on to you, and we will give the world to you.

The performance was followed by a discussion with Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden and historians Doris Kearns Goodwin and Jon Meacham, both of whom put the January 6th attack and the current political divisions in context with other moments of American history.

Their words were a bit of a warning. Goodwin said that “in my lifetime,...

How To Watch Coverage Of The Anniversary Of January 6th Attack On The Capitol
Image
Updated, with additional coverage details: The first anniversary of the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol will be marked by continuous coverage across the broadcast and cable news networks, as reporters and anchors recount the events of that day while sharing plenty of consternation over what has happened since.

The political polarization that has gripped Washington, and much of the country, will be evident by who is expected to participate in commemoration events. Few Republicans are expected, with President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and Senate and House Democratic leaders slated to speak at a ceremony Thursday morning.

Former President Donald Trump, whose false claims that the election was stolen from him led his supporters to storm the Capitol, nixed plans to hold a press conference at Mar-a-Lago that would have been a kind of counterprogramming to the D.C. events. While there were reports that Trump’s...

In a noticeable break from the journalistic demeanor he has projected for nearly three decades at NBC News and MSNBC, the veteran anchor used the final minutes of his tenure on MSNBC’s “11th Hour” to warn viewers of the frailty of American democracy and urged them to keep it safe — if they could.

“My biggest worry is for my country. I’m not a liberal or a conservative. I’m an institutionalist,” he told viewers as the clock neared midnight on the east coast and his five-year term on the show came to a close. “I believe in this place and in my love of country. I yield to no one, but the darkness at the edge of town has spread to the main roads and highways and neighborhoods. It’s now at the local bar and the bowling alley,...

Year in Review: So, How Was Your 2020, Dierks Bentley?
Image
So, How Was Your 2020? is a series in which our favorite entertainers answer our questionnaire about the music, culture and memorable moments that shaped their year. We’ll be rolling these pieces out throughout December.

Dierks Bentley and his family were vacationing in Colorado when the pandemic began and Tennessee schools went remote, so they spent several weeks after that getting outdoors on mountain trails and riding their bikes. In the midst of it, Bentley was helping promote the debut album by Hot Country Knights, a faux Nineties country group...

Image
President-elect Joe Biden, in his first remarks since declared the victor in the 2020 election, pledged to bring unity to the country after a polarizing and brutally fought campaign.

“I am humbled by the trust and confidence you placed in me,” Biden said to a crowd of supporters in Wilmington, De. “I pledge to be a president who does not seek to to divide, but unify, who doesn’t see red states or blue states, who only sees the United States.”

Election Day 2020: Deadline’s Complete Coverage

As he spoke, supporters in a parking lot of the Chase Center cheered and honked their horns from their cars, spaced apart in the name of social distancing.

“It’s time to put away the harsh rhetoric, lower the temperature, see each other again, listen to each other again,” Biden said.

He addressed supporters of his opponent Donald Trump.

Get Ready for a Flood of Political Movies Leading Up to the Election
Image
With only three weeks before a particularly consequential Election Day, political movies — both documentaries and docudramas — are flooding the market in an effort to keep voters engaged and enraged.

Most prominent are Aaron Sorkin’s star-studded “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” Alex Gibney’s pandemic response expose “Totally Under Control” and Liz Garbus-Lisa Cortés’ “All In: The Fight for Democracy.”

But that’s just the tip of the political iceberg of movies taking advantage of the heightened political climate this month. There’s also “The Soul of America,” directed by Kd Davison and based on Jon Meacham’s 2018 book “The Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angels.” The film explores historical challenges such as the women’s suffrage movement, the incarceration of Japanese Americans during WWII, and the struggle to pass Civil Rights legislation. HBO is airing on Oct. 27.

The footage includes an interview with the...

Jon Meacham’s ‘The Soul of America’ Trailer Shows Why Joseph McCarthy Would’ve Loved Twitter (Video)
Jon Meacham
Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Jon Meacham explains in his documentary “The Soul of America” that the Trump era we’re living through does have parallels in American history, from Japanese internment camps, politicians who proposed building metal walls to keep out immigrants and even a claim that Joseph McCarthy would’ve loved Twitter.

Meacham’s book from 2018 “The Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angels” was adapted into a documentary film directed by Kd Davison to give a visual history to Meacham’s words. And HBO will debut the documentary on Tuesday, October 27 at 9:00 Et/Pt, ahead of election night 2020.

“The Soul of America” goes back to moments in history including World War II and Pearl Harbor, McCarthyism, the women’s rights and civil rights movements in the 1960s and much more to understand how Americans have continually battled against forces of hatred, oppression and division to improve the way of American life.

Image
Updated with Thursday details: The 2020 Democratic National Convention wraps four days of virtual party meetings, events and speeches Thursday night, when Joe Biden will formally accept the party’s presidential nomination in primetime.

In its place on the Dems’ side were a week of morning and afternoon meetings followed by a primetime block from 9-11 p.m. Et each night that features marquee speeches and musical performances including from Billie Eilish, John Legend and Jennifer Hudson.

Harris and former President Barack Obama fueled Wednesday night’s program, with Harris accepting the VP nomination to make history as the first woman of color to do so.

What To Expect On The Final Night Of The Democratic Convention: Joe Biden’s Big Moment, And Donald Trump’s Counterprogramming
Image
Joe Biden delivers the most important speech of his political career tonight on the finale of the Democratic Convention, but he’ll also have a bit of counter-programming by President Donald Trump.

In the hour before Biden delivers his acceptance speech, Trump is scheduled to be interviewed by Sean Hannity on Fox News’ Hannity, several hours after the president trekked to Biden’s childhood hometown of Scranton, Pa to give a speech.

The highlight of the Democratic Convention, to start at 9 Pm Et, will be Biden’s acceptance speech, and the campaign has given a hint of its tone with the theme of the evening, America’s Promise.

Also scheduled to give remarks are Biden’s children, Ashley and Hunter. The latter has been a low-key presence during the campaign, but was a target of Republicans during the Democrats’ impeachment hearings.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, the star of Veep, will serve as moderator of the evening,...

Mark & Jay Duplass Auto Scam Docuseries Leads Latest HBO Doc Slate
Image
Room 104 and Togetherness creators Mark and Jay Duplass have set their latest HBO project – a documentary series about a 1970s auto scam centered around a mysterious entrepreneur.

The Lady and the Dale is one of a number of new documentaries unveiled by WarnerMedia’s premium cable network.

The film, which is directed by Nick Cammilleri (Slide) and Zackary Drucker (Transparent), tells the story of Elizabeth Carmichael, who rose to prominence when she released a fuel-efficient three-wheeled vehicle during the 1970s gas crisis.

However, the problem was that there were questions marks whether Carmichael and the car were real. Liz Carmichael was born Jerry Dean Michael, a criminal wanted for grand theft, fraud and involvement in the Colombian drug ring. The story involves investigative journalists and hit men with employees insisting that Carmichael, one of the first public figures to be outed as transgender, worked non-stop on the revolutionary car,...

Impeachment TV: Key Senator Says He’ll Vote Against Trial Witnesses
Lamar Alexander
The long day of impeachment trial coverage ended with a brief moment of suspense — just how will Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-tn) vote on whether to call witnesses and extend the proceedings. At just after 11 p.m. Et, he answered: No.

That raises the likelihood that Democrats will come up short in their efforts to convince enough Republicans to compel witnesses in a vote on Friday, and that the trial will come to a close with a final decision on President Donald Trump’s acquittal or removal later in the day.

On cable news channels, commentators treated Alexander’s announcement as the beginning of the end of proceedings.

“It’s a cover up,” reporter Carl Bernstein said on CNN. “That is what the Senate has now done. They have covered up what the President of the United States has done in his grievous actions when they had the ability to find out more.
