In the Ott age, the bar for what’s “watchable” is lower than ever. Audiences are no longer chasing only quality—they’re chasing comfort, drama, escapism, and just enough plot to keep pressing “next episode.” That’s where Netflix’s The Royals slides in. With a mere 4.2-star IMDb rating and a 36% rotten tomatoes score, the show is “glitzy and painfully inert” and really far from critically praised. Yet, it’s trending. Not because it’s a standout rom-com or binge-worthy series on Netflix—but because it’s easy to consume.
Priyanka Ghose and Nupur Asthana’s The Royals follows the tired but crowd-pleasing formula of will-they-won’t-they, set against an opulent but debt-ridden palace backdrop. It’s predictable, dry in parts, and barely lifts off emotionally. But it’s shiny, occasionally funny, and performs just well enough to ride the Netflix algorithm. There’s a reason it’s...

“The Royals” opens with a sun‑drenched beach in Sri Lanka, where Sophia Kanmani Shekhar’s morning run collides with a polo‑playing prince. This playful romp signals the series’ core: a modern Indian royal family grappling with ancient titles and twenty‑first‑century pressures. Sophia, a self‑made CEO with an ambitious “Royal B&b” venture, embodies India’s booming start‑up culture, while Aviraaj Singh must reconcile his inherited crown with mounting debts.
Across exotic backdrops—from sleek Mumbai boardrooms to the timeworn halls of Motibagh Palace—the show fuses light romance and dynastic drama. The creators, Rangita and Ishita Pritish Nandy, enlist Neha Veena Sharma’s scripts to explore how lineage and enterprise can clash or converge. Directors Nupur Asthana and Priyanka Ghose frame each scene with a keen eye for symbolism: the palace’s crumbling walls mirror a monarchy’s fading influence, and Sophia’s crisp...

The Royals
Directed by Priyanka Ghose and Nupur Asthana
Starring Bhumi Pednekar and Ishaan Khatter
If you are really keen on benchmarks then The Royals, directed by Priyanka Ghose and Nupur Asthana, produced by the illustrious Pritish Nandy Communications, and streaming on Netflix, can be measured against the number of parties and events that the royal family spends its time hosting attending in inebriated bliss.
In fact, the crumbling haveli, which is supposed to represent their fading glory, is swamped away in a torrent of glamour. As far as I could see, the only real problem the Singh Parivaar has is that they have no problems, except for leaky ceilings and broken hearts, nothing that a bit of attending can’t take care of.
Sadly, the attention span of the main players is less than what we would expect from aristocrats (albeit the crumbling kind). There are many generations of royalty in The Royals,...

The Royals Review: Ishaan Khatter & Bhumi Pednekar’s ‘Raja Rani Ki Kahani’ Is Glittering Gold! ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
The Royals Review: Star Rating:
Cast: Ishaan Khatter, Bhumi Pednekar, Sakshi Tanwar, Zeenat Aman, Nora Fatehi, Vihaan Samat, Kavya Trehan, Milind Soman

Generally, what is the basic structure of a Royal story? Too many heirs, too many secrets, a kingdom that has no money and is bankrupt, and probably a murder that creates all the mystery. However, Ishan Khatter and Bhumi Pednekar’s drama The Royals is fresh, quirky, different, modern, and full of sass, thanks to Zeenat Aman and Dino Morea!

The Royals Trailer Review: Ishaan Khatter & Bhumi Pednekar In A Raja Rani Royal Rom Com? (Photo Credit –Instagram)
Netflix started this year with a bang when it came to delivering long-form content. Be it Black Warrant, Dabba Cartel, or Khakee – The Bengal Chapter, it has ticked the boxes this year for superlative content. Now, it brings another web series – The Royals.
Directed by Priyanka Ghose and Nupur Asthana, the web series, stars Ishaan Khatter and Bhumi Pednekar, along with Sakshi Tanwar, Zeenat Aman, Nora Fatehi, Vihaan Samat, Kavya Trehan, Milind Soman aur Dino Morea.
The trailer of The Royals promises a royal rom-com and even the credit boards of the web series seems to be heavily inspired from a Disney rom-com (and even reminds me of Khoobsurat’s title design – that film with Sonam Kapoor and Fawad Khan). The 2-minute 47-second trailer tries to explain the premise in detail!

Revisiting Bewakoofiyan starring Sonam Kapoor and Ayushmann Khurrana as Subhash K Jha reshines the light in the film that released in 2014 in a new installment of This Day That Year.
This is Delhi’s nouveau riche Gurugram, then known as Gurgaon, a world bathed in cosmetic conceit. Sonam Kapoor and Ayushmann Khurrana blend into this gleaming kingdom’s excesses effortlessly. The two of them are so good as a couple imagining them apart for even a portion of the bitterness that bites into the narrative during the second half becomes unbearable.
Debutant director Nupur Asthana’s is a bright, scrambled world of wealth and luxury and the yuppy club’s unstated desperation to move up the corporate ladder. It is also, by its very definition, a ridiculously self-important, delusional world.
Miraculously, this film, with its gleaming polished surfaces, neither gasps nor laughs at the ignobility of upward mobility.

Modern Love: Mumbai (Amazon Prime Video)
Six films directed by Alankrita Shrivastava, Hansal Mehta, Nupur Asthana, Vishal Bharadwaj, Dhruv Sehgal, Shonali Bose
Three of the six films—we can’t call them episodes as they are all self-contained independent narratives—are absolute winners. The stand-out films here are clearly Hansal Mehta’s BaaiVishal Bhardwaj’s Mumbai Dragon and Shonali Bose’s Raat RaniThe last being special for Fatima Sana Shaikh’s rousing performance, but more on that later.
Hansal Mehta’s Baai features Pratik Gandhi as the scion of a conservative Muslim family struggling in the closet. Rich in ambiance and brimming with romance music and elegance Baai is a classic representation of what can be done in the Ott space if a filmmaker has his heart set on it. While Pratik and debutant Ranveer Brar are splendidly paired as lovers, Baai brims over with wonderful actors in even the smallest part; for example,...

Capping off 2021 on a high note, Saqib Saleem bowled us over with his act as Mohinder Amarnath in 83 and it seems the streak of power-packed performances continues. The 83 actor garners flattering reviews for his act as a migrant and thief in Ruchir Arun’s Teen Tigada from Amazon Prime’s latest anthology Unpaused: Naya Safar. As the streaming boom gets stronger in India, Saqib marks his presence across the Ott scene, having already charmed the big screen with Kabir Khan’s sports drama.
What excited Saqib about the film is that it touches upon different lives and their overwhelming situations amid the pandemic with sensitivity. Unpaused: Naya Safar consists of five stories helmed by five prominent filmmakers – namely, Nupur Asthana (The Couple), Ayappa Km (War Room), Ruchir Arun (Teen Tigada), Shikha Makan (Gond Ke Laddu), and Nagraj Manjule (Vaikunth).

Unpaused Naya Safar(Amazon Prime Video, Anthology Of 5 Stories)
To paraphrase a beloved pop songs of the 1970s: “All You Get From Covid Is Covid Cinema”.
Luckily for us Unpaused Naya Safar is not only well worth our time and attention, this five-tiered omnibus is better more sensitively designed than the first season that came in 2020. Unpaused Naya Safar actually constitutes 4 stories of varying merit, and one outright masterpiece.
Quite like Neeraj Ghaywan’s Geeli Pucchi in the anthology Ajeeb Dastaans, Nagraj Manjule’s Vaikunth in Unpaused is so far ahead of the other four segments it deserved a full feature-length treatment. It’s like the Amitabh Bachchan of the anthology towering above the rest with its razorsharp brilliance and acute insight into human nature during stressful times. An aching darkness spreads over the story as the film’s protagonist , a cremator in a crematorium who suddenly has a full...

"After reading the script, I was skeptical about how will they position something that's palatable but at the same time make a bold statement? Another big concern for me was the fact that I had to play a mother. I wasn't ready for this and I had the fear of being typecast into that role, which has been quite prevalent in the industry," Kirti said.
"I kept questioning whether I should take the plunge and play a role, which could probably change my image and affect the type of work or opportunity that could come my way.

Even ones that somehow managed to cha-ching the money registers sky high. 2014 had its fair share of films that fit all these categories. BollySpice brings you the biggest disappointments of 2014.

Starring Rishi Kapoor, Ayushmann Khurrana, Sonam Kapoor.
Directed by Nupur Asthana
Rating: *** ½(three and a half stars)
Sometimes, love just ain’t enough. So there we have two people in love. The pampered but not spoilt bureaucrat’s daughter Mayera and her lover beau Mohit whose upward mobility is frozen by an employment meltdown in his airline organization(spicy allusion to the Kingfisher crisis, yes?).
It’s Delhi’s noveau riche Gurgaon world bathed in cosmetic conceit.Sonam Kapoor and Ayushmann Khurrana blend into this gleaming kingdom’s excesses effortlessly. The two of them are so good as a couple, imagining them apart for even a portion of the bitterness that bites into the narrative during the second-half becomes unbearable.
Debutant director Nupur Asthana’s is a bright scrambled world of wealth luxury and the yuppy club’s unstated desperation to move up the corporate ladder. It is also...

As expected and predicted in our box-office report, the prominent release of the week, Yash Raj Films' Sonam Kapoor and Ayushmann Khurrana starrer, Bewakoofiyaan, embarked on a dull note. There was a pick up at select city multiplexes during the latter shows, but not very significant. The start and not so great pick up (despite good weather) does not auger well for the Nupur Asthana directed film. Having said that, the film is expected to fare best at Delhi-ncr and East Punjab cir...

Mohit is a marketing whiz kid vying for a step up the career ladder…
Mayera – a financial brain with a penchant for shoes…
They’re a young middle-class corporate couple that’s ambitious and likes the good life too.
They work hard, they party hard.
They’re also passionately in love with each other.
Their belief: You can live on love and fresh air…
Their obstacle: Mayera’s willful bureaucratic father V.K Sehgal.
The obstinate old man believes that only a rich man can bring Mayera happiness and a mid level executive like Mohit simply isn’t good enough!

Mumbai, March 7: Veteran actor Rishi Kapoor, who plays Sonam Kapoor's father in debutant director Nupur Asthana's "Bewakoofiyaan" says he isn't likely to be seen in any "stereotypical" fatherly roles as he finds them "too unexciting".
"If you notice, I didn't play my own son's (Ranbir) father in 'Besharam'. It is not vanity, just sanity. I can't do the stereotypical father's role. They don't challenge me as an actor at all. So I avoid doing father's roles. It's just too unexciting," said the 61-year-old.
"To my good fortune I am getting roles that do not require me to be the so-called father," he added.
