‘Arcane: League of Legends’ Team Unpacks Epic Final Season and Teases More to Caitlyn and Vi’s Story
Image
The final episodes of “Arcane: League of Legends” may have hit Netflix six months ago, but fan fervor for the Emmy-winning series isn’t anywhere close to dying down.

In a sold-out May 10 conversation with Variety at Alhambra’s Gallery Nucleus (which currently houses a collection of “Arcane” concept work as well as tribute artwork from over 30 artists), the creatives behind “Arcane” unpacked the epic final season and teased what may be next for some fan-favorite characters.

The series’ emotional final moments between sisters Jinx (Ella Purnell) and Vi (Hailee Steinfeld) were conceived more than six years ago when “Arcane” was first workshopped, said screenwriter and co-executive producer Amanda Overton.

“Originally, it was supposed to be one season. It was nine episodes. The big battle that you saw during Season 2 was actually the end of Season 1. And after they finished the writers room, we made the decision to move that...

‘The Wild Robot’ Dominates Annie Awards for Animation
Mark Hamill, Pedro Pascal, Lupita Nyong'o, Piotr Michael, and Kit Connor in The Wild Robot (2024)
“The Wild Robot” was the big winner at the Annie Awards on Saturday evening, winning nine trophies at the annual ceremony that honors the best in animation as chosen by the Los Angeles branch of the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood.

The DreamWorks Animation and Universal release dominated a ceremony that was at one point interrupted by a fire alarm that caused Royce Hall to be evacuated. It won Best Feature and also took awards for direction, FX, character animation, character design, music, production design, voice acting and editorial. It went into the show with 10 nominations and won in every category in which it was nominated, with its only loss coming in the voice-acting category, where one “The Wild Robot” actor, Kit Connor, lost to another, Lupita Nyong’o.

While the Annies have a long history of sweeps, which critics have at times attributed to block voting, the nine wins for...

‘The Wild Robot’ Soars at Annie Awards With Nine Wins; Fire Alarm Interrupts Ceremony
Image
DreamWorks Animation’s heartwarming “The Wild Robot” ran away with the most trophies at the 52nd annual Annie Awards with nine, including best feature. Netflix’s video game adaptation “Arcane” led the TV/Media categories with seven. But Saturday’s ceremony didn’t go off without a hitch, as a pair of fire alarms went off at the venue, UCLA’s, Royce Hall, including one that interrupted the ceremony.

A fire alarm went off about halfway through the ceremony, causing attendees to evacuate the theater and exit the building before returning to their seats and resuming the show. A second fire alarm went off during the pre-show reception, keeping hundreds of guests waiting on the grounds and unable to enter the event for roughly 45 minutes. “There was a sensor that was tripped and then had to act and get everybody out. Once the fire marshal said it was clear, we could go back in.

'Arcane' Season Two Deep Dive on How It Was Made
Image
It takes a magical village to make Arcane — now streaming all Season One and Two episodes on Netflix — look so good on screen.

The Emmy-winning animated series comes from co-creators Christian Linke and Alex Yee, with the French animation studio Fortiche Production in partnership with Riot Games, the minds behind the multiplayer battle game League of Legends, on which Arcane is based.

Fortiche Production and Riot Games’ collaboration with Linke dates back to 2012, when they first collaborated for the League of Legends “Get Jinxed” character video.

“It’s a professional and friendly relationship spanning more than 10 years,” Fortiche Production co-director Barthelemy Maunoury tells Tudum. “We exchanged daily [communication] with Christian and Alex, and their trust in Fortiche enabled us to work hand in hand.”

While the artists working on Season One focused on building the visual narrative of Piltover and Zaun as two distinctly different cities, Season...

Arcane Showrunners Reveal Why They Saved 1 Major Moment for Season 2
Image
Arcane finally delivered on CaitVi, but only after bringing its characters to a point in time where the kiss felt right.

In a conversation with Techradar, showrunners Alex Yee and Christian Linke explained their rationale for holding off on Vi and Caitlyn Kiramman's long-awaited romance until season 2's story matched their respective emotional states. "In the wake of what Caitlyn's lost, Vi can sense there's a fragile trust in this relationship they have, and there's this moment coming up where they'll both have to decide how they're going to be when they're staring down the barrel when they find and fight Jinx," Linke said, referencing Caitlyn's mom being amongst the Piltover leaders killed by Jinx's attack which, in turn, finally turns Vi against her sister.

Final Emmy Predictions: Creative Arts Night One Will be Dominated by Barack Obama, Joanna Gaines and ‘Arcane’
Image
The first night of the 2022 Creative Arts Emmy Awards is taking place on Saturday, Sept. 3, and we’ll see where the Primetime ceremony could be heading based on the first wave of winners.

With an evening that features categories for animated program, reality host, documentaries and short form, we could get a strong sense of where some of the support lies for the main ceremony on Monday, Sept. 12.

There are significant history-making moments that can take place.

Barack Obama could become the second U.S. president to win an Emmy for outstanding narrator for Netflix’s “Our Great National Parks.” Dwight Eisenhower won in 1956, while still in office when he picked up the Governors Award “for his use and encouragement of television.”

If Obama wins, he’ll be halfway to Egot status after netting two Grammys for best spoken word album for “Dreams from My Father” (2006) and “The Audacity of...

‘Arcane’: How the Netflix Animated Series Transcended Its Video Game Origin as an Innovator
Image
Netflix’s “Arcane,” based on Riot’s popular “League of Legends” battle game, has become the most acclaimed animated series of the season after sweeping the Annie Awards. This bodes well for its Emmy chances, thanks to a compelling story and eye-catching illustrative style from Paris-based animation studio Fortiche.

“Taking this on was intimidating but we had a yearning to do something different,” showrunner Christian Linke told IndieWire. He created the series with fellow Riot vet and executive producer Alex Yee. “We figured out what made the game and characters so popular and then made the series for ourselves.”

The secret of their success was building the dystopian series around the rivalry between badass sisters Jinx (Ella Purnell) and Vi (Hailee Steinfeld), who are part of a war between the affluent city of Piltover and the oppressed underground city of Zaun. “So much of Jinx was her big personality and...
