Using music as a plot device, first-time director Choi Jung-han puts dreams and friendships under the scanner in his debut work “Galaxies”.
Eun-soo, Eun-ha and Dong-eun are three friends who form the band Eun-Ha-Soo, literally “Galaxies”. Eun-soo and Eun-ha are a couple who ran away from a music production company to showcase their individuality but, not least because of their age and said individuality, labels find them highly unmarketable and the three struggle to make ends meet. When Dong-eun, who is known to chronically invest in bad stock, takes and invests the band's savings, loses it all and runs away, the angry Eun-soo and Eun-ha, who had let him stay in their apartment when he fell behind on rent, take an old guitar of Dong-eun's and sell it on a marketplace. However, when Dong-eun returns with the money, they must trace back the guitar, which holds a lot of sentimental value to Dong-eun,...

Starting from his first acting gig, as a car salesman in the feature “Our Town”, which he also scripted, Mo Hong-jin has shown time and time again his affinity for the thriller genre. Even though it has been one of the most popular genre in his home country, it would take him nine years until the first day of shooting began for “Missing You”. Besides offering the kind of entertainment that goes along with this kind of movie, as a writer he was interested in what turns a person into a “monster”, as Mo explains in interviews about his feature. Especially with regards to the character of Hee-jo, played by actress Shim Eun-kyung, he wanted to know whether she decided to go the same path as the killer she had been following or if she would remain human and a “girl”.

In less than two weeks one of the most thrilling blockbusters of the summer, Bong Joon-ho‘s Okja, is arriving. While we recommend going into the globe-trotting adventure cold (and seeing it on the big screen, if possible), Netflix has now released a second trailer, which ups the emotion, as well as a huge gallery of new images.
One of our Cannes favorites, we said in our review, “A dystopian story about a genetically engineered beast with overt anti-capitalist connotations, Bong Joon-ho’s Okja represents a synthesis and an upgrade – in scale as well as quality – of the director’s previous outings The Host and Snowpiercer, confirming him as one of the finest contemporary craftsmen of intelligent, ambitious blockbusters.”

Netflix has been in the original films game since 2015, but they’ve yet to have the kind of movie that turns heads around the world. They’ve had their fair share of award contenders (“Beasts of No Nation,” “13th”) and high profile projects (“War Machine”), but nothing near the level of a global blockbuster. “Okja” could very well change that.

The latest from “Snowpiercer” and “Host” director Bong Joon Ho, “Okja” is the story of young girl who travels to New York City to save her pet super-pig from a global corporation intent on making her the face of their new brand and turning her into their next big product. The film’s global settings and international cast give it a worldwide appeal that many Netflix movies have lacked.

Bong Joon ho’s “Okja” was booed at its Cannes Film Festival press screening on Friday after a technical issue caused the film to be projected in the wrong aspect ratio for several minutes at the start of the movie. Boos were also heard when the Netflix logo appeared on the screen prior to the glitch. The screening at the Lumière Auditorium proceeded normally after the issue was resolved.

We've got a fun trailer for Netflix's upcoming original film Okja from director Bong Joon Ho (Snowpiercer) and I love it! This is a freakin' fun trailer and it looks like Okja is going to be a great movie! On top of that, the movie seems like it has a lot of heart. This first full trailer for the movie definitely got me excited about watching it.
I love the story it tells, I love the visuals being used to tell that story, and I especially love the energy and tone that I'm feeling from this trailer.
The film has a fantastic cast that includes Tilda Swinton, Paul Dano, An Seo Hyun, Byun Heebong, Steven Yeun, Lily Collins, Yoon Je Moon, Shirley Henderson, Daniel Henshall, Devon Bostick, Woo Shik Choi, Giancarlo Esposito and Jake Gyllenhaal.

In advance of its splashy bow at Cannes this week, Netflix has released the first full trailer for its much-anticipated Bong Joon Ho monster joint, “Okja.” And it’s adorable.
Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhaal, Lily Collins, Paul Dano, and Ahn Seo-hyun star in the monster film, which appears to marry the concerns of corporate greed (care of Swinton’s character) and charming inter-species friendship (the eponymous beast and Ahn) into one glorious mash-up of humor and terror as only Bong could create.

Based on a South Korean comic strip, director Kang Woo-Suk’s “Fist of Legend” looks to be a standout among the flicks released in the country during 2013. I’m a sucker for South Korean fight movies, which is why this particular endeavor has ensnared by brutally fickle attention. Although we already covered the trailer that dropped last month, the promotional team have unleashed a new poster for the world to gawk at. You can find it below. But first, a really short synopsis: A man takes part in a reality show based on “real fighting.” The prize for the program is 20 million wons. Contestants consists of regular people. Not much of a plot, really, but people usually don’t watch these things for the thrilling storylines. I could be wrong, though I seriously doubt it. “Fist of Legend,” which has no connection to the Jet Li flick, stars Hwang Jung-Min,...

Not to be confused with the awesome Jet Li movie of the same name, the South Korean “Fist of Legend” sends some regular Joes (albeit regular Joes with really cool high-flying kicking skills and the like) into a Ufc-like Octagon ring for cash prizes and fame and fortune. The movie hails from “Public Enemy” director Kang Woo-Suk, and is based on a Korean comic strip. It looks like a pretty simple tournament fighting movie, so I wouldn’t get too caught up in the plot, such as it is. Take a gander at the 30-second teaser trailer below. A man takes part in a reality show based on “real fighting”. The prize for the program is 20 million wons. Contestants consists of regular people. Following the baseball drama GLove, director Kang Woo-suk of the Public Enemy trilogy has set his sights on another sport, mixed-martial arts, in Fist of Legend (no relationship to the Jet Li film of the same name). Based on a webcomic series written by Lee Jong-kyoo and illustrated by Lee Yoon-gyun, it centers on a group of middle-aged men who were once hailed as legends during their teenage years, participating in a fight tournament to win the grand prize money. The cast include Hwang Jung-min (New World), Lee Yo-won (May 18), Yoo Jun-sang (R2B: Return To Base) and Yoon Je-moon (Doomsday Book).A moment of bad luck derailed Deok-kyu's Olympic dreams and led him and his friends to jail. I’m a little late on this one, but since I think this one has potential, I’m going to post it, anyway. Below you’ll find the latest trailer for Koo Ja-hong’s upcoming drama/comedy “Dangerously Excited”, a motion picture about a government worker who clashes with an indie rock band. And if you guessed that our hero would eventually come to appreciate the youngsters and their music, congratulations! You’ve obviously spent so much time watching movies that absolutely nothing comes as a surprise to you anymore. And that’s kind of sad. Enough about your problems. Here’s a lengthy synopsis: Dae-Hee (Yoon Je-Moon) is a low level city government employee in the Mapo district of Seoul. His department handles various issues like trash, noise, and public safety. Dae-Hee isn’t married, nor does he have a girlfriend at the moment. He also doesn’t have many hobbies.

Paradoxes abound in Battlefield Heroes, a South Korean film showing at the New York Asian Film Festival. Even the title itself, an English slap-on as American audiences would never understand what its literal translation, Pyongyang Castle, refers to, belies what the story is about. For, at its center, the best heroes are no where near a battlefield.
Silla, an upstart power in Korea, has decided to attack the kingdom of Goguryeo, one that has withstood many assaults during its 700 year reign in the region. This attack comes with the backing of the Chinese Tang dynasty who will play the two regional powers against each other only to swoop in later and pick up the pieces. In between this large battle there are a good number that occur on the ground and in leadership.

Mother (15)
(Bong Joon-ho, 2009, S Korea) Kim Hye-ja, Won Bin, Jin Ku, Yoon Jae-Moon. 130 mins
After his mutant tadpole movie The Host, Bong brings us another Korean monster: a middle-aged herbalist with a will of steel and some serious overprotection issues. Her simple-minded son has been fitted up for a schoolgirl's murder, and in a society of inept cops, exploitative lawyers and generally corrupt townsfolk, only mommie dearest believes he's innocent – and sets out to prove it. It's a mystery thriller to make Hitchcock proud, and a delectably warped parable of blood running thicker than water.
The Expendables (15)
(Sylvester Stallone, 2010, Us) Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li. 104 mins

Chicago – “Any guess what’s going on?” asks Zhang Qi, the befuddled leader of the Tri-Nation gang, as he observes a nearby train erupting into utter chaos. This line earns the first big laugh in Kim Ji-woon’s breathlessly entertaining “The Good, The Bad, The Weird,” precisely because it mirrors the thoughts of audience members during the film’s delirious opening sequence.
After inventively working within the genres of horror (“A Tale of Two Sisters”) and the noir thriller (“A Bittersweet Life”), director Kim now turns his attention to the “oriental western” with technically impressive though decidedly mixed results. Kim is a major talent, and his exuberance is intoxicating, but he often gets so focused so exploring a given style that he forgets to tell a coherent story. That curtain-raising scene aboard a train is so confusingly staged and frantically edited that it’s difficult to tell who’s good,...
