Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop Live-Action Star Says The Series Deserved A Second Season To Prove Itself; Slams Studio For Not Valuing Anime IPs
Daniella Pineda
Daniella Pineda, who portrayed Faye Valentine in Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop, believes the show was cancelled too soon and says the series deserved a second season to prove itself.

Speaking to The Direct on the red carpet of her new film The Accountant 2, Pineda opened up about the abrupt end of the 2021 series and called out studios for failing to recognize the value of anime IPs like Cowboy Bebop.

“I feel like those animations, they mean so much to people, and they’re so personal, and I think people really connect to when they watched it and the point of their lives. And so, I just feel like, and I’ll say this, having been in one, I think that those studios, they need to do a better job at valuing that IP. It’s really special. And people on ‘Bebop,’ they worked very, very hard,...

10 Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Characters Every MCU Fan Should Know
Image
Long before Disney+ was created, ABC's superhero drama Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was the Marvel Cinematic Universe's foothold in the world of television. Picking up after The Avengers, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. see a mysteriously resurrected Phil Coulson lead a ragtag group of operatives. The early seasons feature occasional cameos from MCU characters like Nick Fury, Maria Hill, Jasper Sitwell, and Peggy Carter.

As the show continues, the familiar faces dwindle and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. focus on building its own array of impressive heroes and villains. With the MCU beginning to integrate characters from its other forgotten gems, there are plenty of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. characters primed to make the leap to the big time.

There are many magic-users now in the MCU, with new witches taking center-stage in Marvel Television's Agatha All Along, but even more could soon appear.

After WandaVision introduced Kathryn Hahn's original Salem witch, Agatha Harkness, the door was opened for more witches and sorcerers to follow suit. Agatha All Along's remarkable cast portray the likes of Lilia Calderu, Jennifer Kale, Alice Wu-Gulliver and Vertigo, some of the most powerful witches in Marvel Comics, but there are still many witches missing from live-action. How Kylie McNeill, a Teen Without Internet Fame, Wound Up as the Voice Star of ‘Belle’ (Exclusive)
Image
In an era of TikTok favorites getting record deals and lead acting roles, follower counts and blue checkmarks seem to be a requirement for getting a big break in Hollywood. It is therefore refreshing and rare when a 19-year-old from Manhattan with no internet fame whatsoever is plucked from relative obscurity and given the chance of a lifetime: voicing the protagonist of one of the highest-grossing anime movies in Japan of this past year as her industry debut. And, boy, does she have the pipes to prove she belongs in the big leagues.

Much like her character Suzu in Mamoru Hosoda’s highly-acclaimed and visually stunning “Belle,” Kylie McNeill is just a soft-spoken teenager that likes to record herself belting her heart out from the comfort of her bedroom. Though she majored in theater at New York’s prestigious Professional Performing Arts School — which has churned out singers and musicians like Alicia Keys,...

Cowboy Bebop is riding off into the sunset… but one of its writers isn’t ready to say goodbye yet.

Netflix cancelled the sci-fi anime adaptation on Thursday, less than a month after the freshman season debuted on the streamer. Expectations for the series were high — John Cho starred as an intergalactic bounty hunter in a new live-action take on the animated cult hit — but mixed reviews and a lack of buzz led to Netflix pulling the plug, despite spending years developing the show.

The Live-Action ‘Cowboy Bebop’ Is Just the Latest Victim of ‘Netflix Bloat’
Image
(This post contains no spoilers for the first season of “Cowboy Bebop,” now streaming on Netflix.)

Netflix’s live-action remake of “Cowboy Bebop” tries to be so much all at once, and appeal to so many different potential audiences, that it ends up struggling to forge an identity of its own.

For fans of the iconic, relatively solemn Japanese anime that inspired it, the show’s reliance on borderline whacky hijinks (think an R-rated “Scooby Doo”) will be nothing short of confounding. For newcomers, the show might also confuse as it hops across crisscrossing planets and timelines, weaving between vastly differing tones as it goes. Both parties might at least find some common ground in appreciating the core cast, since John Cho (as moody bounty hunter Spike), Mustafa Shakir (as his no nonsense partner Jet Black), and Daniella Pineda (as firecracker rival Faye Valentine) are at least sharp enough to...

The Live-Action ‘Cowboy Bebop’ Takes an Anime Classic Into the Stratosphere
Image
Like catching a roadrunner without getting an anvil dropped on your head, adapting animated stories into live action is a high-risk endeavor. There are so many things you can do with relative ease in the former medium that create enormous difficulties in the latter. It’s not just about spectacle and style, but tone. There’s a distancing effect to animation that allows weirder concepts to feel perfectly logical, and for mismatched elements to blend together seamlessly. Sometimes, the live-action adaptation works, and it turns out that Brendan Fraser is...

‘Cowboy Bebop’ Teaser: John Cho’s Spike Spiegel Chooses Noodles Over Bounty in Special Footage
Image
Netflix has released a new teaser trailer for the upcoming series “Cowboy Bebop” in anticipation of its premiere in exactly one month. The teaser, titled “The Lost Session,” is a standalone adventure comprised of specially created footage that won’t be seen in the series.

The teaser features bounty hunters Spike Spiegel (John Cho), Jet Black (Mustafa Shakir) and Faye Valentine (Daniella Pineda) as they embark on a quick adventure for “a new bounty on the line.” Through shifting colored lenses and moving panels used to differentiate between scenes, the footage exhibits the cowboys battling various foes. Upbeat, horn-heavy music plays throughout the teaser, until Valentine cuts off the final shootout by saying, “Hey nut buckets, there’s no payout if you shoot him in the face.” The trailer ends with Spiegel and Black comedically arguing about who was responsible for losing the payout as the scene pans out to show their spaceship.

Netflix’s ‘Cowboy Bebop’ Shows Off Jazzy Opening Credits
Image
Of the many beloved elements of “Cowboy Bebop” — the seminal late-1990s anime series that became a cult sensation in the U.S. after it premiered on Adult Swim in 2001 — arguably the best known is its killer opening credits sequence, set to the singular jazz theme “Tank!” by Yoko Kanno.

The opening credits are so iconic that, rather than release a trailer to promote its upcoming live-action adaptation of “Cowboy Bebop,” Netflix elected to debut the full opening credits for the show during its Tudum global fan event on Saturday.

The series follows a team of bounty hunters, or Cowboys, who patrol the solar system for criminals in their spaceship, Bebop. The crew consists of Spike Spiegel (John Cho), known for his sharp dressing and floppy hair; Jet Black (Mustafa Shakir), an ex-cop with a robotic arm; and Faye Valentine (Daniella Pineda), who spent over 50 years in cryogenic sleep before joining the Bebop.

Image
Netflix’s live-action take on the anime classic Cowboy Bebop finally has wrapped production on its first season after a long injury layoff and the coronavirus shutdown.

The streamer confirmed the news to Deadline tonight after series regular Daniella Pineda posted about it on social media.

It’s been a twisty road to the film can for Cowboy Bebop. The series was announced as being in development in June 2017, and Netflix gave it a 10-episode order in November 2018. Pineda, John Cho, Mustafa Shakir and Alex Hassell were tapped to star about six months later, and production began several months after that in New Zealand.

With a couple of episodes finished, filming ended abruptly in early October 2019 after Cho sustained a knee injury on-set that required surgery. Then came the global production halt amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

In July,...

Joseph Mensch at the Sundance premiere of Bushwick
"Michael - this is the beginning for you." It's time to get revenge! Vertical Entertainment has released an official trailer for Payback, a mob vengeance thriller marking the feature directorial debut of NY producer / filmmaker Joseph Mensch. A young stockbroker at a Mob-controlled Wall Street firm gets betrayed and sent to prison for six years. When he gets out, he seeks revenge. Matt Levett stars as Mike Markovich in the film. And the full cast also includes Anna Baryshnikov, Toby Leonard Moore, Lev Gorn, Rade Serbedzija, Elena Satine, Boris Lee Krutonog, and David Vadim. This actually looks way better than it should, even though it is entirely derivative, the footage in here is damn good. I'm intrigued! Have a look. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Joseph Mensch's Payback, direct from YouTube: Mike Markovich (Matt Levett), a young stockbroker at a Mob-controlled Wall Street firm, is betrayed and imprisoned for six years.

Netflix’s ‘Cowboy Bebop’ Live-Action Series Reimagining Gren as Non-Binary Character
Image
Netflix has revealed the latest round of casting for the upcoming “Cowboy Bebop” live-action revamp, and among them is non-binary actor Mason Alexander Park. Park, who toured nationally with the Broadway version of “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” will play fan-favorite character Gren, who will also identify with they/them pronouns. Gren is the right hand to Ana (Tamara Tunie), owner of the hottest underground jazz club on Mars.

In the original Japanese anime series that ran 1997 through 1998, the arc Grencia Mars Elijah Guo Eckener, as they’re known fully, was explored in the two-part episode “Jupiter Jazz.” An aspiring saxophone player at the club known as the Rooster House and a veteran of the Titan War, Gren was subjected to experimental drugs that increased their estrogen and caused them to grow breasts. Gen’s fluid sexual identity ascended the character to a rare LGBTQ representation in anime.

“Revolutionary as the original anime was,...

Revenge Sequel: Who Needs to Return?
Emily Thorne/Amanda Clarke's twisted tale of revenge is over, but ABC is poised to kick off a new iteration of Revenge.

We reported earlier this month that a brand new series set in the same universe of 2011-15 TV original is officially in the works.

The new iteration follows a young Latinx immigrant who arrives in Malibu seeks revenge on a "Sackler-Esque pharmaceutical dynasty, whose insatiable greed lead to the murder of her biochemist mother, the destruction of her family, and a global epidemic."

The most intriguing aspect of a potential sequel is that a character from the original would be on board to guide this young woman on her mission.

No details have been revealed about who will be back, but that doesn't mean we can't chat about who should return in some capacity for the sequel.

The series was filled with colorful characters, and that's why...

The series is still early in production and Netflix could replace Cho if they wanted to, but they are not going to do that. They’re fully committed to Cho and will not make this series without him. A rep from Netflix offered the following statement:

“Our thoughts are with John and he has our complete support as he recuperates from this injury.”

Cowboy Bebop is the “jazz-inspired,...

Elena Satine Will Star Alongside Jon Cho in Netflix's Cowboy Bebop Series as Julia
Elena Satine (Strange Angel, Revenge, The Gifted) is the latest actor to join Netflix’s live action Cowboy Bebop series. She will star alongside Jon Cho, who plays Spike Spiegel, and take on the role of Julia. Here’s a description that was shared for the character:

Satine also joins the previously cast Mustafa Shakir (Luke Cage), Daniella Pineda (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), and Alex Hassell (Suburbicon) , who will all play key roles in the upcoming series. I think Satine seems like a solid choice for the role, but what do you all think?
