Fremantle kicked off its presence at the Venice Film Festival with a bang this year with the announcement of its new €150M ($162.7M) Scripted Fund forged in partnership with Israel-based Ibi Investment House.
The fund is reserved exclusively for select projects being developed by Fremantle’s stable of scripted drama companies, which include UK’s Dancing Ledge and Element Pictures, Italy’s The Apartment, Wildside and Lux Vide, as well as The Immigrant, specialized in Latin America and Spanish content.
First projects backed by the fund include previously announced feature Maria, the high-profile Maria Callas biopic, starring Angelina Jolie and directed by Pablo Larraín, who is at Venice this year with Augusto Pinochet dark comedy/horror El Conde.
Two newly unveiled series will also benefit: the four-part thriller Generation Loss, written by Bridgerton’s Sarah Dollard, and six-part revenge thriller Shelter, to which Jeremy Webb is attached to direct.

In a sign of a growing presence in the film world, the company is basing itself out of a vast beachfront villa just down the road from the festival’s main hub for the first time this year.
Deadline sat down with top Fremantle execs, Group COO and CEO Continental Europe Andrea Scrosati and CEO Global Drama Christian Vesper, in the peace of its lawned garden to discuss the genesis and implications of the new scripted fund.
Deadline: How did Fremantle connect with Ibi Investment House?
Scrosati: It came to us through our CEO in Israel Guy Hameiri, who is also going to be the CEO of the fund. He runs our company there [Abot Hameiri), which we initially invested in and then bought out two years ago.
He came to me around like nine months ago, saying that the leadership in Ibi was interested in finding a way to invest in scripted content. Together, we developed this model that I think is pretty new.
Deadline: What do you mean by new? There are other funds in existence investing in scripted content.
Andrea Scrosati: I think the interesting component here is that it’s a financial institution partnering with a content production company. The projects can only come from Fremantle. So that’s the intriguing component, for us. Then, this fund will fully finance those projects, which is also rare, especially for TV. To have a self-funded studio kind of model on drama is slightly rare. And then Fremantle will go out and sell.
Deadline: What encouraged you to go down this route?
Scrosati: It’s coherent with our strategic positioning. Talent has a lot of opportunity choices… but to super simplify, there are two key potential choices. One, talent signs a deal with a big direct-to-consumer operation. It’s an absolutely a fine choice. But obviously, what happens is that the talent then has to deliver results that are coherent with the platform that needs to sell the subscriptions.
Our approach to talent is different. We say, ‘We’re going to focus on your project, we’re going to support your project, we’re going to potentially finance or risk on your project, and then we’re going to find the right home for your project, because not every project is okay for every place.’ This new device helps us with this strategic positioning.
There is a tactical component because of where the market is today. Big traditional buyers didn’t stop buying but are for sure on a slower kind of pace. We strongly believe that good content has a future. I’m very positive about where the market is going to be in three or four years from today. In every market there’s growth, and then an adjustment.
The problem with where the market is today is that there are great opportunities, sometimes that involve great talent, but they have a time component and you risk not doing those projects if you’re waiting for the green light from Apple, Disney, Netflix, or Amazon.
Deadline: If the commissioning contraction hadn’t happened would you still have gone down this route?
Scrosati: Yes, for the strategic reason I mentioned.
Christian Vesper: Not Maria, because Maria is a film and starts very soon. And that was a different calculation. But for the two TV shows that we discuss in the [press] release, part of the consideration there was we believe in the projects. We know there’s a market for them but the talent attached has a discrete window, and so much of our business model has been based on how we bring in talent. How do we service our talent? Our job is to help them get their shows made and on the air. And this gives us one more powerful tool for doing that.
Deadline: Will the new fund change the way you deal with the broadcasters and streamers ?
Scrosati: The buyers are our partners. These shows will go to a client or a streamer. The fund is simply a way to accelerate the production time schedule. The buyer will be able to access a product when it is actually already in production or is already produced.
Vesper: One of our best clients in the UK is struggling now with some of their bigger shows. Even if they’ve greenlit them, they can’t find the financing for the rest of the budget. This is partly to step into that void. The networks, the linears and the public broadcasters, they’re struggling to fulfill all their programming needs with the resources they have and this provides yet one more avenue to do that.
Deadline: Can the fund be accessed by all the companies producing scripted content under the Fremantle umbrella?
Scrosati: Yes, as you can see with the first three projects. One of them is taking place in Israel, one in in UK, and one is a Chilean-Italian co-production, shot in Hungary. It’s going to be fantastically global.
Deadline: You have set yourselves the target of a €3B turnover by 2025. Do you think that’s realistic? And why have you set yourself this goal?
Scrosati: The goal was set by our shareholders… I’ve worked for a few different shareholders over the course of my career. The thing I’ve found incredibly strong is that Bertelsmann and Rtl have set a goal but have also given us all the support and instruments to reach that goal. It is a very ambitious goal because obviously the company was doing a very different number three years ago, but again they have given us all the support.
One thing, which is really important to say, is that the growth we have done in the last few years has been a been a mix of M&a and organic growth. This growth is not simply because we are acquiring companies, but rather because we are diversifying and creating a business portfolio. An example of this, is that five years ago, we were delivering two movies a year, and last year, we delivered 17, and with the exception of Element, which is an acquisition, all these movies come from companies that were already part of Fremantle.
Vesper: When I joined the company, Wildside was already a crucial part of the company, and I’ve been here six years now and the growth there is all organic and extraordinary.
Scrosati: The M&a we’ve done is all part of strategic plans. It’s been about acquiring companies that were best in class in a sector where we were not present. Element is a fantastic example of that. We did not have an English language, movie production company. Or, best in class in potentially growing regions where we were not present. We invested in Latin American company The Immigrant a few years ago when it was a start-up. It now has three productions on the go and its first movie Adolfo won the Generation 14 Plus prize in Berlin.
Vesper: One of our companies in England, Dancing Ledge, is hitting it out of the park in terms of the number of series they have on BBC and all the platforms. Like The Immigrant, we invested in them when they had done nothing. It’s not like we’re buying revenue. A lot of the M&a is investment in the future.
Deadline: Do you plan to keep up the pace of scripted company acquisitions of the last three years, or is that calming down?
Scrosati: In line with what we were just saying, If there is something that is coherent with our growth, in areas where we’re still not present, or there is a company or creative team that we really think has potential, we will still invest. The other component is the cultural element. We are a big company but we’re very lean. The scripted management team is basically in front of you. The only way it can work is if we see can see an element where it will work intellectually and culturally.
Deadline: Do you have further growth plans for scripted in the U.S.?
Scrosati: It’s our first territory. The company’s core business is still the entertainment and unscripted business and the U.S. is a massive territory for us for that. In addition, Dante di Loreto is leading the scripted team and has a lot going on.
Vesper: We have a show, Fellow Travellers, coming out on Paramount+ at the end of September. It’s a big mini-series with Matt Bomer, Jonathan Bailey and Allison Williams, that was developed with Showtime and that we produced for them. Six-part, gorgeous, about the gay panic in the CIA in the 50s. We also produced two seasons of Mosquito Coast for Apple.
We have a number of big shows that we’re about to announce. What’s interesting is that we have a couple of projects that the U.S. have set up to shoot here (Europe), and vice versa. We’re trying to make sure that our European producers have the resources in the U.S., and the other way round. We’re constantly strategizing about this, it’s important for us to continue to build that business in the U.S..

Global production and distribution powerhouse Fremantle has revealed a strategic alliance at the Venice Film Festival with Israeli-based Ibi Investment House, which involves the launch of a 150 million euro ($163 million) fund to bankroll a portfolio of premium scripted TV and film projects.
Under the deal, which will last four years, Fremantle will bring a diverse range of projects from its network of studio companies to the Ibi fund, fast-tracking the production of each title. The partners say the projects will also benefit from the creative oversight of Fremantle’s global drama team, led by its CEO Christian Vesper, who will work with the fund throughout the lifecycle of each production. All TV projects approved through the fund will be distributed by Fremantle International.

The British film and TV industry breathed a collective sigh of relief today after the government signalled its intention to scrap a planned 1.2B sale of Channel 4, one of the crown jewels of UK broadcasting.
Deadline understands that UK ministers could formally announce a U-turn over Channel 4 privatization as soon as tomorrow, with the decision all-but rubber-stamped by Rishi Sunak, the prime minister.

When big changes come to Doctor Who it’s the Doctor who grabs all the headlines. That, after all, is showbusiness: children don’t ask for bedsheets bedecked with the faces of the show’s writing or production team. It’s the showrunner – much more than anyone else, including the actor playing the lead role – upon whom the fate and fortunes of the show rest. They decide everything from the look, feel and tone of the seasons, to the thrust and arc of the narrative, to who writes, directs and stars – from the smallest bit-part to the Doctor themselves. The buck stops with them, in other words, and a showrunner can very much make or break an era.

Bridgerton, the first TV series from Netflix’s collaboration with Shonda Rhimes’ production company, debuted on Christmas Day to viewers hungry for a romantic distraction from the ongoing pandemic. The recent announcement of renewal for a Season 2 comes as no surprise as rumors were already swirling. Although showrunner Chris Van Dusen has received praise from critics and fans alike for diversified casting and a storyline filled with drama, some noticed a few glaring issues that detracted from the enjoyment of the story. Here’s some of the areas where improvement could result in more viewers and even may win back viewers who weren’t able to finish the series initially.

It is safe to say the series has set a new standard for other productions in the genre to follow. Some viewers may be concerned that the pre-release promotion and dialogue around Bridgerton may just be giving lip service to advancing diversity and representation. But, when it comes to racial inclusivity, Bridgerton lives up to and even surpasses expectations.

Netflix announced Sunday that it is starting development on seven new shows that will be filmed in the U.K., with Andy Serkis, Rowan Atkinson and “1917” director Sam Mendes among the attached talent.
The shows will be developed by the streamer’s vice president of U.K. Original Series, Anne Mensah and will be produced alongside upcoming seasons of shows like “The Crown” and “Sex Education.”
“Setting up a team entirely based in the U.K. was always about being able to better connect to the fantastic program makers we have here — to provide a space for writers, producers, directors and actors that feels local, friendly and familiar but also provides talent the opportunity to make shows that will impact on a global scale. Netflix has announced that it will produce seven new original scripted series in the UK, ranging from horror to science fiction, love stories to physical comedy.
All of the shows will be written and produced in the UK. The Original Series team is led by VP UK Anne Mensah.

There’s a lot of elements that make Doctor Who great – spectacular acting, set, costume and creature design, direction, etc. – but it’s hard to argue that a good script isn’t key for a show that’s known for its big imagination. And for those interested in the writing of the long-running sci-fi series, the BBC has now released a selection of scripts from the modern version of the show on its Script Library service for your reading pleasure.
There are currently 14 scripts available to read online, plucked from across the past 14 years of the revived series and from the pens of various writers. Kumail Nanjiani and a handful of film, television, and comic book writers are coming to Kelly Marie Tran’s defense following the news the actress wiped her Instagram account clean in the wake of extreme social media harassment from angry “Star Wars” fans. Despite traveling through time and space with the Doctor, Bill only now really saw into the heart, er, hearts, of the alien Time Lord who looks human.

Following his appearance as the serial mistake maker Nardole in the 2015 Christmas Day special, comedian Matt Lucas is set to become a regular in the cast of The BBC's "Doctor Who" from the opening episode of the tenth season.
Lucas joins newcomer Pearl Mackie, who takes up the role of the companion of The Doctor (Peter Capaldi). It marks Mackie's first major television role.
Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer, said in a statement: "Delighted and slightly amazed to be welcoming Matt Lucas back on to the Tardis - and this time it's not just for Christmas, he's sticking around. One of the greatest comedy talents on Planet Earth is being unleashed on all of time and space."
Moffat, Frank Cottrell-Boyce, Sarah Dollard and Mike Bartlett are penning episodes of the new season which starts filming on Monday in Cardiff, Wales and airs next year.
In related news, the show's upcoming spin-off series "Class" is set to have a openly gay lead character who is in a committed relationship. The BBC has announced a limited edition Blu-ray steelbook release for Doctor Who series 9. Alice X Zhang was personally selected by Peter Capaldi to design the artwork, which you can get a glimpse of above.
The steelbook set will be released on Monday the 7th of March, and is currently available for pre-order on Amazon. It will feature all the same extra features as the regular series 9 boxset (released the same day).
As well as commentaries for four episodes and all the relevant episodes of Doctor Who Extra, both sets will also include these behind-the-scenes featurettes…

The curtain closes on Doctor Who series nine with the show’s first three-parter since series three’s Master-centric finale, “Utopia”/“The Sound of Drums”/“Last of the Time Lords”, and while it’s not perfect, the extended finale is a fitting end to what has been one of NuWho’s most consistent seasons. The end of series three is not one of the better Who multi-part stories, starting strong before fizzling out spectacularly (let’s take a moment to remember The Tenth Doctor shriveling into GollumDoctor before becoming floating JesusDoctor. Now to piggy back off of The Twelfth Doctor’s memory wipe…), and perhaps that’s why showrunner Steven Moffat wisely avoids a traditional multi-part structure with these episodes.

We approach the finale of series nine with a whiff of judgment in the air. “Face the Raven” presents like the climactic scene in a courtroom drama. It is as if the Twelfth Doctor has stood trial throughout his run as we struggle to determine if he is a good man. How much responsibility does he bear for the chaos he leaves in his wake? 9.10 Face The Raven
If the ongoing grumble this series of Doctor Who has been about Clara not really convincingly finding a place within it, Face The Raven doesn’t half give her a fitting farewell. I found Donna Noble’s departure close to heartbreaking, but what was particularly of note here, appreciating how few companions have been killed in the line of time-travelling duty, was that Clara ultimately knew it was coming.
Is Clara dead for good? Who knows. Doctor Who certainly has form in bringing back deceased characters, and it's not as if there haven't been other versions of her dotting around. But right here, right now, Clara is dead. It’s no secret that Jenna Coleman has left the show.

Now that Sleep No More is, er, no more, it's time to move on to the next episode of Doctor Who series nine: Face The Raven.
Written by Merlin and Primeval's Sarah Dollard, Face The Raven sees the Doctor and Clara inside a magical world concealed in our nation's capital. For more on that, here's the official synopsis:

I watched Saturday's Doctor Who.
Good grief. In a series that's not been afraid to take twists, turns, to go off in precisely the opposite direction that people were expecting, Face The Raven has again demonstrated the confidence and talent that's fuelling modern day Doctor Who. It does feel like we take a lot of this for granted, but there are several flat-out exquisite moments in this episode - not least Peter Capaldi giving his work in The Zygon Inversion a run for its money - that surely deserve at the very least a lot more respect. Doctor Who fans mourning Clara's impending exit will have the chance to say goodbye to Jenna Coleman's companion in person.
Coleman has been confirmed to attend this month's Doctor Who Festival at the Excel Exhibition Centre in London.
The actress will appear on both the Saturday and Sunday (November 14-15) and will join Peter Capaldi, Michelle Gomez and Ingrid Oliver for a special Meet The Cast panel.
Photo opportunities with Coleman are now on sale - though if you haven't purchased a photo opp with her co-star Capaldi yet, the bad news is those are all sold out.

Maisie Williams will make a third appearance in Doctor Who series nine.
Writer Sarah Dollard has confirmed that the Game of Thrones star will appear in Dollard's episode 'Face The Raven'.
'Face The Raven' is the tenth episode of series nine. It will also feature the return of graffiti artist Rigsy and will be directed by Justin Molotnikov.
Dollard commented on her Twitter that Williams' return has been "really difficult not to tell everyone".
She was speaking at the McM London Comic Con earlier as part of a panel with Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss and Rachel Talalay, who will be directing the series nine double-bill finale.
Moffat has insisted, though, that Williams is not the new companion.
In the show, Williams plays Viking girl Ashildr and viewers saw her make her second appearance on last night's episode 'The Woman Who Lived'.
Her character was made immortal in 'The Girl Who Died'.

Back in March, BBC America announced that Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams will be guest starring in a Season 9 episode of Doctor Who. While we saw Maisie Williams pop up in a recent trailer, we still haven't heard much about who she's playing in the beloved series. The Official Doctor Who Festival has announced more details about the three-day event, with Mark Gatiss the latest name added to the lineup.
The writer has penned seven episodes of the revived series - and also played Professor Lazarus in 2007's 'The Lazarus Experiment'.
He will join the previously announced Peter Capaldi and showrunner Steven Moffat as well as Michelle Gomez and Ingrid Oliver, who will be available for pictures at the event.
There will be a full series nine writers' panel, with the likes of Moffat, Gatiss, Toby Whithouse and Sarah Dollard discussing the latest series.
Two sets from series nine will also be on open display, and the set of Clara's living room will be available to ticket holders for photo opportunities.

Last month at Comic-Con, BBC debuted the first trailer for Season 9 of Doctor Who, while announcing that the show will return September 19. If you've been chomping at the bit for new footage since then, you're in luck, as the network has revealed the second Doctor Who trailer today, which offers a few new glimpses at guest star Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones).
