ESPN Will Look Quite Different Next Week
Image
This week is probably not among the “Top 10” in ESPN history. On Monday, the final SportsCenter in Los Angeles signed off, and on Friday, long-running afternoon debate show Around the Horn will see host Tony Reali crumple his stat sheet, the last page in his daily research packet that lists the career win total of the day’s panelists (and is later either recycled or signed and sent to a fan), for one final paper toss. We’re rooting for Reali to hit the camera lens one last time.

With no more SportsCenter in L.A., anchor Stan Verrett’s ESPN contract has not been renewed and he is leaving the company after this summer following a 25-year tenure, a source with knowledge tells The Hollywood Reporter. Linda Cohn’s future work with ESPN is Tbd, though she remains under contract. Cohn joined both the company and the show’s anchor desk in 1992. Since then,...

ESPN Ending LA-Based ‘SportsCenter,’ Asks Employees to Relocate to Connecticut
Image
ESPN’s Los Angeles-based “SportsCenter” and soccer studio coverage out of the city are coming to an end, with plans to relocate the productions to Bristol, Connecticut.

The sports network’s decision will impact 35, or 13%, of the 229 employees in its West Coast production center, an individual familiar with the decision-making tells TheWrap.

“Based on our current business needs, we are relocating the L.A.-based ‘SportsCenter’ and soccer studio shows to ESPN’s Bristol headquarters, including the limited number of employee positions related to these shows,” an ESPN spokesperson said in a statement. “The Los Angeles Production Center will continue to host ESPN’s NBA studio productions and provide office space to additional L.A.-based employees.”

“SportsCenter” will remain in its 1 a.m. Et time slot and will begin production out of Bristol in late May. Conversations about the L.A.-based “SportsCenter” anchors Linda Cohn and Stan Verrett’s future remain ongoing,...

Neil Everett Recalls Denzel Washington Knew Him Like Family in Look Back After ESPN Exit: He Said, ‘I Watch You Every Night!’ (Video)
SportsCenter (1979)
Neil Everett, who along with co-anchor Stan Verrett spearheaded ESPN’s long-awaited and highly anticipated invasion of Los Angeles in 2009, says his time at the network is already “in the rearview mirror” after a 23-year stint that ended with Friday’s “SportsCenter.”

Everett spoke to Ktla’s “Frank Buckley Interviews” after his final show and reflected on the highlights from his days with the World Wide Leader.

“I did Coach John Wooden’s last TV interview,” Everett said. “I became friends with Bill Walton. I met my boyhood idol Jerry West. I introduced myself to Denzel Washington who then looked at me and said, ‘I know who you are, I watch you every night!’ I talked story with Michael Keaton for 49 minutes on set…that’s got to be a ‘Sc’ record!”

Everett added, in the interview you can watch in full above, “I feel like I’m living outside...

Front Office Sports has written that the 61-year-old Everett is leaving, the latest on-air talent to depart the network.

ESPN moves three to Los Angeles
New York -- Espn tapped three on-air personalities to move West to anchor shows from the network's soon-to-open Los Angeles production facility.

The facility will host the 1 a.m. Et edition of "SportsCenter," the network's signature show, five days a week starting April 6. The 1 a.m. Et edition will be anchored by Neil Everett and Stan Verrett, who work at Espn's Bristol, Conn., headquarters but will move to California.

A third anchor, Stuart Scott, will begin working from the Los Angeles bureau in April. Espn said that he would host "a select number of shows" from there.

The facility adjacent to the Staples Center is part of La Live, which also has a hotel, theater and restaurants. There, Espn will have two studios, three production control rooms, two master control rooms, eight edit suites, a voiceover room and other infrastructure for more than 12,300 feet.

The Los Angeles Espn Radio station will relocate nearby.
